filitorial ROUND 3

After two rounds we still have three undefeated sides in the RFL • Griffith, Leeton/ Whitton and Coolamon. Last week the GGGM Lions opened their account against Turvey Park at Maher Oval in convincing fashion. Coolamon continued their good form with a 108 point thumping of MCU·E. Leeton / Whitton continued their impressive start to season 2004 with an emphatic 92 point win over the Eastern Hawks. Griffith maintained their good form with a gutsy 33 point win over the improving Narrandera Eagles.

This weeks match of the round is definitely at The Exies Oval Griffith where the clash of two undefeated sides, the Swans and the Crows, takes place. Because Sunday being Anzac Day this will be a delayed starl and the seniors will be played under lights. The Swans were not supposed to be the strength they were last year but so far this year they have defied that and have been very convinong. Ben Wade, Jamie Bennett and Shane Pound have been in fine touch recently and they will be relied upon to do the same today. The Crows have emerged as a real threat to all sides this year and they have won both games very impressively. David Harrison, Matt Flagg and Daniel Sullivan were stars last week and there is plenty more talent that Kerry Vaughan-Niven has at his disposal. It is tremendous for the competition that the Crows are competing the way they are. This will go down to the wire but I'll lean towards the Swans in what will be a beauty.

Logan Oval, Gan main, is the venue for the match between the Lions and the Eastern Hawks. Ganmain-GGM opened their account last week and Shane Lenon will be wanting to build on that. They faded slightly in the second half and he will be looking for a full four quarter effort against the Hawks. Scott Hamblin, Marc 81aybon and Mitch

Steele were better players last week. The Hawks are in for another long season but the performance of their U 18's must give them some encouragement. Geoff Smith will be looking at blooding some of these youngsters during the year. Ben Perkins, Phil Evans and Aaron Washington played well last week. With past players from the t 984 premiership teams in attendance to urge Ganmain-GGM on I can't see the Hawks worrying the Lions to the extent of defeat. The Lions comfortably.

Kindra Park, Coolamon, is the venue for the clash between traditional rivals Coolamon and Turvey Park. The Grasshoppers will looking to maintain their unblemished record at the expense of the Bulldogs. Man Hard has Coolamon playing very good footy and he has a lot of potential at his disposal. Luke Maloney, Brendon McKelvie and Nigel Scott are class players and they put enormous pressure on the opposition. Bulldogs Coach, Bl.air Campbell, would have been reasonably happy with the second half last week and that will give him some confidence for this encounter. They will rely on Chris Cerato, Andrew Loughman and Dane Campbell to show leadership to the younger players. The Bulldogs will be there for parl of the game but Coolamon will be too strong at the finish.

The last game for decision is at Mangoplah Sportsground where the Goannas host the Narrandera Eagles. Mango have had far from an ideal start to 2004 but they have played two of the top sides and both games have been played at the opposition's home ground.Rodney Simms knows that their is obvious improvement in the Goannas and he will be hoping that it starts today. Travis Richards, Neil Lawson and Geoff Spriggs have been better players for them. The Eagles had a torrid match last week which should put them in good stead for the match today. They are definitely a better side this year and will win their fair share of games. Stuart Hutchins, Ashley Thomson and Kaine Malone will be solid players for the Eagles again today. The Goannas will improve but not enough to defeat the Eagles.

I trust that those involved in Anzac Day celebrations enjoy a game of RFL footy first and the two up second. All the very best to all players and supporters for an enjoyable weekend.

EASTERN Iii.\ l\7l{S The highlight of the week was the 18"s pushing

the Reigning Premiers Leeton to 3 points. Top effort fellas, keep training and sticking together like you have and success will come. The guys had the opportunity to kick away but poor accuracy in front cost us in the end. Everybody put in, but the awards went to Kenny ' Hutch"Vanderfeen, Mitch "Spooky Toes· Leaver and Levi ' Blue Jeans "Pollett. Dave"Starsky' Vanderfeen was awarded the Clubs "Play of the day"with his duck and weave out of the centre, a bounce or three to kick a very nice sausage.

"Mark of the Day" (and mug and Country Motel Dinner for two and ..... no that's it ) again went to big bold busting himself, Ben "Spring heel" Perkins.rm not sure which one of his speckies it was for but to see such a big man defy gravity like he does ,with such poise, elegance, balance and regularity is well worth the drive out to Gumly (and becoming a member ) to see.

The " Attitude" award of the week goes to big Adam "DJ" Le Lievre who along with Nathan "Scotty" Scott played with the 16' s as well as the 18" s. Adam dislocated his left pinkie to roughly 58 degrees, not flinching a whisker had it "put" back in and st rapped and chose to play on. When asked why he chose to play on when many would have quit, he replied "BECAUSE I LOVE THIS GAME" needless to say more, that's the stuff we need to rebuild this club. Onya big fella.

Coming up in May is the Finars of the tastern Idol Competi tion, come as your favourite movie star or entertainer. Entries taken on the night for curry yoke. Fantastic Prizes are assured. This a Senior/ Junior Combined night so table bookings will be essential. Training has been spot on this week. so lets show Ganmain that the Eastern Hawks are on the Rise!! The awards will be done back at the Koorin9al Hotel at approx. 8pm

He returned and played a great game on Sunday taking out the "Commercial Club Bistro 77 Award'. Also make welcome Mat Kerley who played his first game for us last week as well. I th_ink we can expect big things fro m rh1'> side this year with their dedication and t ireless effort on the track they are certainly an example to be followed by all. Congratulations to Craig Websdale who won the Don Tuckwell Award.

Our Netballers had a tough day on Sunday in what I believe were very physical games. Our C Grade had a thriller of a game to start off the day unfortunately they went down 17-18. Nicole Langley and her hidden talent at shooting stole the show with her winning the Mug. B Grade had a tough game with Sarah Logan putting in a big effort In the circle to take home the mug. In what was a very competitive game, our A grade netballers had a very tiring game. Dr. Jane put in a great effort to take home the mug.

Just a short note from Denise"Netball Nazi"Short could all girls please hand in their rego forms and SS TODAY AT THE LATEST.

It would be great to see more numbers at both football & netball training. We all really need to make a big effort ""d get our team together a nd move forwa rd as a club.

Look forward to seeing everyone up at the pub this evening for our players auction for the Netballers & Ul B's.Their will be a Pasta Night as well so your support will be much appreciated.

Also the club is in the process of ordering Polar Fleece Jumpers. These will be $40 each. They are available in all sizes for Guys & Chicks! If you are interested in ordering please see John Wilson.

Thi::, week we rake on Narrandera for our first Home Game. Let's hope this is the start of many good things to come from the club. Go The Mango Army!

GRIFFITH Sll11.\NS Round 2 over and we sit secord on 1he ladder wilh 1wo good

win~ over 1wo sides which were 1ou1ed by 1he"expen• at the D.A. 10 finish above us at the end of the season. It was certainly a · battte•in the true sense of lhe word In the seniors and it was only good luck that ~w us come out of the game wrth virtually no injuries, although Mrchael Duncan doesn't have much recollection of what happened 10 him all hough plenty of the SJpporters saw 1he incident and !here was li1tle prolection given :o 1he player going for the ball by the men in orange. Something has 10 be done aboul this or someone is going to be badly hurt Ben Wade 10okevery1hing 1ha1 was literally 1h1own at him and stood 1all. He was voted BOG and took home theExies Dinner fo,,Twoand !he Mug. Jamie Bennell was awarded lhe Snuggle In Voucher for his performance and 5 goals, and again Shane Pound and Ben Ford were 1he olher award winners with Ben gelling lhe McDonalds and Shane the Casella Wine pack. All in all it was a great 1eam performance and whilsi !he winning margin looks comfortable on paper, wilh only abou1 9 minutes 10 go, !hey were only up by 7 points after a great figh1 back by 1he Eagles. But 1he boys didn't panic and managed to put on 4 imponant goals in 1he dying minu1es to come away wilh a good w,n.

The nelballers were also winners on the day having a clean sweep of all four grades.A Grade won by a soli1arygoal ( 27-261 and 1he Mug wen I to Sam Clarke and 1he McDonalds 10 Minella Walker. B Grade won 28-17 wi1h Belh Campbell winning 1he Mug and Bee Wade the McDonalds. C Grade Katrina Harland won 1he Mug and Erin Pat1erson (one of 1he Juniors who had 10 play up) won the McDonalds for !heir performances in !heir 24·9 win. The Juniors began where 1hey lefl off las1 yea, and had a very solid win 29-19. Megan Bran6eld won the Mc:Donalds and Erin Patterson finished off a grea1 day by winning the Players'Player award.

Now on to 1he Reserves and 1he Under IB'sard here Sa1u1day football 1ook it's 1011. As was expec1ed we were struggling to field a Reserve grade side because of work commi1men1s and were only able to do that with the use of three U18's who backed up. This gave us 18 - no1 even lhe allowed 20. Therefore ii was no surprise that 1hey were comprehensively bea1en, all hough !here were some posilives to come out of the game and it will be a different story I his week. The Au10 Pro Award and 1he Mug went to elder statesmen Bruno Ceccato who was solid in defPnrP. Kris Duncan 100k ou1 !he McDonalds award after have played his heart oul in 1he Ul S's for a full game. The Casella Wine pack wen! to Simon Spears and the Enbee For Hair Award went 10 Man Crack who was playing his fi1s1 gall'e for 2 years and showed 1ha1 he had lost none of his skills in I his time. Thanks also 10 Dean Ca1anzarl1i and Terry Wade for also backing up and welcome back 10 Luke Ca1anzariti.

Like 1he same game laS1 year which 1hey ac1ually forfeiled, 1he Under IB's went as close as you can go 10 forfei1ing without actually having to do so aga n due to Sa1urday foo1ball. Weas a Club,a,e extremely grateful 10 1he 1h1ee U 16's who at great personal cos! were prepared to offer 1heir services 10 make up a side of 14 and 10 play up, I hey were Reece Best, Kris Hicken and Jarrod Duncan. The boys were always going 10 be on a hiding 10 nothi~g bu1 al lea_s1 Narrandera were able 10 get more 1han jus11he po·n1s_ and 1he11 players didn'I miss out on gelling votes from 1he_ ump11es for 1h_e B & F and 1he Club fulfilled 11s commi1men1s bu111 "very worrying and we still have 3 more Sa1u1day games 1his season. The Synergee voucher went to Kris Duncan, the McDonalds 10 To11 Campbell, Video Ezy to Dean Catanzariti, Lucas Kidd can use ~is canteen voucher !Oday and Rhys Newman the Nufam Cap.

LEETON-WHITTON (~ ll() 1\T S An extremely blustery day welcom_ed us to Gumly Ovil las1

weekend, and after negating some spmted oppo~1t1on ~ram _the Hawks, we again came aw"'! wilh a clean shee1 w11h 5 vrctorres from 1he malches played.

Our U 18s wen I in10 !heir malch undermanned, bu! I hanks to some help from some fi1s1 timers 10 the code, as well as some brilliant individual contribulions from our 1alented core of regular players, !he boys withs1ood a spiriled efforl from 1he young Eastern Hawks outfit 10 win by 3 points in_ an en1ertaining game of football. Bes1 was easily Steve lanelh (Gu1s,n Gravy Award) who racked up 40 poss~ssions in jus1 his second game of foo1ball! Others to stand ou1 included Tom Douglas (SI O Cash). Anthony Roddy (Leeton Lunch Box Award), 1he converted Frank Piccolo (Leeton Fish Shop Award) who kicked 1hree brilliant, if unorthodox goals, and Mitch Heaslip (Tonjays Piua).

2nds again recorded a big victory, however coach Neil McCallum expressed some concern at the odd loss of concentration throughout the match (he was still happy to win by 14 goals however). Best was 1he young combinatio~ of Adrian Howe (S 15 Cash) and Dale Symes (S 10 Cash), while 01hers 10 shine included Dave Hopwood (Coachs 6 Pack), Mall Lang (Liquor Barrel Award), Gram Dowling (Mens land Award) and Mall Meladonis (Players Mug).

The Seniors malch was nol a great advertisement for the game, wi1h 1he wind and some poor skills conspiring 10 tum much of the ma1ch in10 a scramble. We ran out winners by 92 points. however the coaching staff will be having nigh1mares abou11he goal kicking al the moment, 1heCrows booting I 5.30 and numerous out or bounds, indicating a large pos~ssion advan1age, bu! a1rocious conversion. Best was Matthew Robertson, Jamie Broadbent, David Harrison (Players Incentive), Dallas Stoll (Players Incentive), Mau Flagg :Players lncen1ive), Brad Waters ($25 Cash),Adam Cameron (SlS Cash), Kane Bullock (Tonjays Piual and Kun Bullock (Coach,s Mug).

Our netballers completed another successful day al lhe office, and seem 10 be s1ealing 1hemselves 10 progress further 1han in 2003. A Grade notched a pleasing 77-B victory, with Michaela Robinson (Chery Whymark and Kathy Dunn Award) and Kellie Harrison (Coachs Mug) dominating through the mid cour1.B Grade scored a resounding 51-3 vinory, Angela Broadbent (Sports Alliance) and Narelle Brown (Coachs Mug) proving an uns1oppable combinalion in 1he goal circle.

Norm and Donna Broadbent,s training award wen! 10 the ever enthusias1ic B Grade skipper Rebecca McCallum.

Last Sunday's Survivor Lee1on-Whi11on Crows, was a tremendous success with over 100 members of the senior and junior clubs ba11ling it ou1 through seven rigorous disciplines before Kikawyldswan 1ribe was controver~ally crowned Sole Survivor. '' RIVERINA UMPIRES

ASSOCIATION

" Interesting round of footy last weekend. There

is no doubt that both competitions will prove very competitive· the top few teams at least.

This weekend sees a 'full on' round of RFL, FFL and ACT AFL.

This weeks Showcase Matches are:

RFL; MCU·E v. Narrandera Griffith vs. Leeton-W

FFL: Temora vs. Northern Jets Collingullie vs. TRYC

With Wagga Tigers playing at home to Western Creek Lions. We will be providing Goal Umpires for all three grades.

2004 V/Line Under 1 S's Championships

This year for the first time there was an opportunity for a young NSW umpire to umpire at the V/Line Under 1 S's Championships, the annual carnival for Under 15 Country Victorian teams. The RUA was the association selected to send down an umpire and I was selected to go. The carnival was held over three days, 5.7,h of April, with 13 teams from Country Victoria and 3 teams from NSW playing in the four divisions. In total there were 16 field umpires to umpire the 24 matches of the carnival. The umpires were coordinated and observed by Davis Drane, Rod Threfall, Greg Sidebottom and Neville Nash.

Carnival started on S"' April with matches being played Optus Oval and Elsterwick Park. I umpired at Elsterwick Park in the match between North Central and Wimmera. Although both sides played

well, Wimmera came out on top. On Tuesday I officiated in the match between

Hampden and NSW 1 at Port Melbourne with Hampden winning the match. On the final day I umpired the match between Sunraysia and Central Murray at Junction Oval with Central Murray winning the match.

There were some very good players, teams and matches and I would like to congratulate the Riverina side on the way they played and their final standing in their division. Along with this the Victorian Umpires did an excellent job and umpired at a high standard, they all have plenty of potential and will hopefully go far.

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the carnival and who helped in getting me there, it was a great experience and I hope that the RUA can continue to send umpires to the carnival.

Tom McDonald

Rick 1 /. Would like to see some more boundary umpires on the training track. Wayne Tilyard is the contact for these members 2/. Thanks to clubs for support ing our Development members again this year. 3/ . Don't forget to get to the Kooringal Hotel Saturday night after the game 4/. Special thanks to Paul and Helen Guthrie for uniforms distribution 5/. Special thanks to Paul Guthrie for the work in the Club rooms over Easter 6/. Remember to encourage each other throughout the season, to praise is much easier!

Best wishes to all for a great weekend of Australian Football.

And remember; "It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect it's successful outcome:

AROUNfl rHE rRAPS • After four rounds in the AFL w ho

would have thought that St Kilda would remain the only undefeated side in the competition. The Saints are playing very good footy at present and all their victories have been impressive. Even despite their tremendous pre season form I think that most people thought that form would be only temporary and they would fade out after a few weeks. But they have proved all and sundry incorrect and they will play a very big part in the competition come September. Two of the stronger Clubs over the last few years, Collingwood and Adelaide, linger at the bottom of the ladder with the Crows yet to register a victory. If these two sides don't run into some form p retty soon they can commence organising their end of season trip for September.

• It was good to see one Club, TRYC, publicly acknowledge and support the MVAFA Cod e of Conduct as they did in last week's notes. It is very important that all Clubs have this policy fully operational within their Club. Everyone from the Board down through Club Administrato rs, players and supporters have a duty to ensure that all behaviour be of a responsible nature at all times. I know that all Clubs fully support this.

• The Board is currently in the process of finalising all details pertaining to the representative fixtures this year. There will be a double header again with the FFL playing Hume League and RFL taking on the Sydney Football League. These matches will be staged at Holbrook on the June

long weekend, Saturday 12th• Coaches,

selectors, managers and support staff will be announced shortly after an upcoming Board Meeting. It is hoped that players do the right thing by the association and fully commit themselves for this one off game for the season. State selectors will be in attendance so all players will be on show and select ion in the state side for the Country Championships in Bunbury, WA, w ill be up for grabs.

• Club scribes are reminded that it is imperative that Club notes are at the Oxford Printery by 3pm on Tuesday's. For those emailing the address is: [email protected] Those faxing the no is: 6921 8161 . If notes are not in by this dead line it cannot be guaranteed that they will go in for that week. All Clubs should be aware that failure to submit notes will result in a fine. Please do the right thing as your players and supporters have the right to know w hat 's going on within the Club each week. I have been asked to request that all scribes limit their notes to 250 words. Any more and it makes it extremely difficult to fit into the allowed space. We don't want to have to read it w ith a magnifying glass do we. With a public holiday this Monday all notes and other information will still be required by 3pm Tuesday. By now all Clubs should be starting to settle down after the season start and players jumper numbers should be permanent. Could all Clubs please revise their lists and ensure that t hey are correct. It is important that the playing public can correctly identify players from the club player lists.

~ Yale) AUii FoollJIIAaoc Inc. G "FOOTY RECORD" - 2004

This week we feature a goal-kicking machine from the seventies that had extensive experience playing and coaching and I refer to

Greg "Scatters" Sheather.

Details of Playing / Coaching Career: Played: 120 games with Grong Grong Matong (started at age 14). Captain/Coach Lockhart for one season 1972. Played 220 games for Wagga Tigers. Coached Wagga Tigers First and Reserve Grades. Coached RFL. Coached Trinity High School. Represented NSW, Farrer League, South West League.

Awards I Medals Received: 2 Best and Fairest w ith GG-M and 1 with Wagga Tigers. Leading goal kicker with Riverina Football League and Farrer Football League.

Favourite Playing Position: Centre half forward and Full forward

Most Respected Opponents: Sid Robbins from Griffith, Jeff Hem pill from Narrandera.

AFL Club: Carlton!!!

Current Occupation: Self employed

Where is Football Heading: More Club~ will be forced to amalgamate or even fold because of lack of player numbers.

---

Greg Sheather commenced his footy as a youngster playing in the black and white guernsey with Grong Grong Matong. It was obvious from an early age that he was going to have a very successful playing career in Australian footba ll. He found a liking for the forward line and his high marking and accurate kicking made him a focal point every time the ball went forward. He was normally a very accurate kick for goal but his nickname (Scatters) suggests that on the odd occasion he must have strayed from the big sticks. Greg was, and still is, highly respected w ithin the Australian football circles and he is still involved with Wagga Tigers. When Greg finished his playing career he became heavily involved with his good mate, Greg Leech, in the selection and st rategic planning of the NSW State Team. His knowledge and expertise of the game where greatly appreciated by NSW/ AFL and I know that he enjoyed this period of his football career. Greg Sheather was one of the dominant forwards of his era and deserved all the accolades that he received during his career. So if you see Scatters down at Workout, or up the street give him a yell and tell him that you enjoyed his Blast from the Past.

Farrer League Editorial A quick whip around the grounds from last

week and at present there are two sides that remain undefeated - CAK and North Wagga. At Victoria Park, The Rock the Saints managed to maintain there lead all day and pulled away from the Magpies in the last quarter. CAK went to Ariah Park expecting a tough one against the Jets and that's exactly what t hey got before coming home with a 16 point victory. The Temora Kangaroos had their first hit out of the year against Rivcoll and after an even struggle in the first half they ran over the Bush pigs to register a 13 goal win.

Match of the round this week will be at the Crossroads Oval, Collingullie, w here we will have a replay of last years Grand Final between the Demons and the Magpies. The Gullie would have been satisfied with last weeks victory but they will realise that the task ahead of them today is just as big as last week. Doug Bruckner, Brad Aiken and Adam Carey are key players for the Gullie and they always put in 100%.The Magpies were right in the match last week but faded in the last quarter and Matt Carroll will no doubt be asking for a full four quarter effort today. Aaron DeJong, Tim Pankhurst and Shannon Doh I were solid performers last week but plenty of assistance will be required from team mates if they are to topple the reigning premiers. The Demons will be unfurling their 2003 Premiership Flag prior to the game so this will give them p lenty of incentive against their old foes and close rivals, TRYC. At home I will lean towards the Demons to maintain their unbeaten record.

Temora have their first home game of the year and they welcome the Northern Jets to Nixon Park. The Kangaroos were apparently a little bit sluggish in the first half last week but

picked up the tempo in the last two quarters. Scott Blackwell would have p leased t o start with a win and he will be hoping for a repeat today. Ross Dever aux and Kane Johnstone got amongst the goals last week and they are quite capable of doing the same against the Jets. The new formation, The Jets, have gone close w ithout greeting the judge and they will think they are in with a big chance against the Kangaroos. Damien Papworth, Ken Fairman and Jamie Wild were solid last week and with the assistance of their team mates they will make it extremely difficult for Temora. The Jets are getting better each week and I think that they will improve even more this week and record their fi rst win of 2004.

The actual first game of the round takes place at Maher Oval on Friday night w hen the North Wagga Saints are playing their home game against Marrar. The Saints have taken all before them so far having disposed of two of the competitions stronger teams. They have a well balanced outfit w ith height in the required areas and pace where they need it. Luke Sutton, Jason Dorazio and David Pieper were very effective last week and, if allowed, will create havoc for the Bombers. The Bombers will have to start well because they cannot g ive a side like the Saints start ann Pxpect to peg them back. They will rely on Dan Edwards, Tom Gorham and Tim Hilton to show the way. Should be an interesting tussle but I think the Saints will be too strong and will win by a comfortable margin.

With the weather cooling down a little don't forget to take a jumper when you go to a ground near you to cheer your side on. The Rivcoll Bush pigs will no doubt enjoy the week off. All the very best to all players and supporters in round 3 of the Farrer Football League.

A near perfect start to the season with t he seniors recording a solid v ictory over the Pigs and the twos having a nail-biting draw.

Returned veteran David Goesch too k out the $20 and 4 votes Bobby McCormack got the 3 votes while the man-mountain, Mark "Whopper" Crawford put on a Barry Hal l esque performance in the forward line to get the 2 votes.

The Ones did the o pposite to the twos and came out sleeping but gradual ly assumed cont rol. The Players Player & Red Steer Din ner for 2 w ent to that tenacious little hard nose terr ier, Ian Oliver. Ross Devereux put h is 38th birthday behind him to bag 7 majo rs, wh ich got him 4 votes. Debutante Josh McKenzie put o n an impressive show t o get the 3 votes respectively.Congratulat ions to Adam & also Dale Harrop w ho came out of the 16 to make the first grade debuts last w eek. Tod ay should be a massive day as we face our newly merged neighbours, t he Northern Jets in j uniors and senio rs. Today could also be a p review of foot y in the future so lets m ake sure we support it.

COLLINGULLIE-ASHMONT-KAPOOKA I) l~)I () NS Sorry to everyone about week's notes, there

was an email damn stuff-up - damn technology. You couldn't ask for a better start to the

season for first grade, the 200 point win over Rivcoll followed up w ith a tuugh win against the Northern Jet s.

The Jets showed they had all the fighting spirit of the amalgamated Ardlethan and Ari ah Park and did not give up until the final siren.

A good win by the boys. The awards went to Bacon, who made the

small Ariah Park ground look even smaller with his booming left boot, the Bruckners, Roy and Doug took home some of the cash, Kenny got the $20 and Macca fi lled in beautifully for Gowie w hen he went of injured to take the $40.

We all wish Gowie a speedy recovery from his injury.

The story wasn't so good in the Magoos with the Jets getting a jump on the boys early and our guys not turning up to play footy until after halft ime.

You can't win games of footy playing 20 minutes of football and four quarter efforts are needed if we are to match it with the top sides.

Awards went to Puzzlehead, Crampy, Nairns and Gadget.

This week is the one everybody has been waiting for, the grand final rematch against The Rock.

I'm sure it will be a tough battle all day and we w elcome the Magpies to Gullie for what should be another enthralling encounter.

I noticed a few of the new g uys at the club this year mumbling through the team song after the games so here it is for those who don't know the words.

Cheer, cheer the red and the white Honour the club by day and by night Lift that royal banner high Shake down the thunder from t he sky Whether the odds be great or be small The Gullie will w in and win overall Cheer all champions red and white Onward to victory

THE ROCK-YERONG CREEK

Luckily we had the netballers to fly the flag for the club last week against Nth Wagga as the netballers won both grades while the footballers lost both. Well done to the Nth Wagg a netballers for fielding 2 sides, we wish you well for the season.

The B grade started the day off with a convincing win 56-10, the Mug went to Emma Mcl achlan and the Coke award to Rachel Newton. The A grade also won well.66-17.The Mug going to Tracey Schul tz, Coke award to Kate Hawkins. Well done to all the netballers who are playing great netball.

To the Football and a costly 2nd quarter fade out cost TRYC reserves a chance of a w in, to finally get beaten by only 11 points against a good Nth Wagga side. With a bit more commitment and work on the track this side is capable of beating good sides. The Porky & Verdo Mug for a huge game went to Tim "Snags"Driscoll,Josh Veliscek picked up the Coach's award for another great game. The Ladies S 10 award went to Just in Marsh and Doug Molkentin in his fi rst game.

The Seniors game had a massive build up and after an entertaining 1" half the speedy Nth Wagga side started to take control and in the last quarter kicked away to record a comfortable 46-point win while Coach Matt Ca rroll expressed its disappointment at the loss. There were some positives to come from the loss and we can see we have some work to do.

The Rock Butchery Mug went to Ash Dikkenberg who battled h is heart out down back. Mark Adams keeps improving each week another big game got him the Home Dinner. The Ag n'Vet Stubby Holder to Jason Brown.

While Nth Wagg a did us no favours on the footy ground, they did do us one off the ground by cleaning up the visitor's shed, which was very appreciated.

Last Saturday night Football & Netball Players Calcutta was a great night apart from those feral "Blues" syndicate getting everything. The Best or

On a near perfect day for footy and netball the Saints made the trek out to Victoria Park at The Rock where the contests are always keen and the premiership points are highly valued. Both our netball teams were pitted against better drilled opponents and the Magpies enjoyed a couple of percentage boosting wins. Our girls will go much better if they can add some depth to their squad so, if you know of anyone looking for a game put them in touch with Webby, Nat o r Alicen. The A grade mug was won by Tanya Duncan while Kate Stenhouse took out top honours in B grade. We will be organising runner-up awards for each grade from this weeks matches against Marrar.

The high-l.>dr fo, tht.> ddy wd:, set d~ 12:00 o'clock with "Scratcher" leading from the bench in what eventually turned out to be one of the best standard 2"" Eighteen matches played in the Farrer League in recent years. There was nothing in it at quarter time and, even though we kick~d out toa seven goal lead early in the third quarter the Magpies kept to the task and narrowed the margin to less than three goals at the three quarter time break. The margin was further eroded in the final quarter and the Saints held on to eventually win by less than two yoals so, Scratcher ended the game unable to "scratch" himself because he had chewed of all his fingernail>! Award winners for the day were Shannon Moore (the Mug) while the other awards were shared evenly between the youngsters (Jay McDonald and Brenton Darcy) and the veterans (Pickers and "Old"Barnesy).

The l " 's burst out of the blocks with a quick three goals but the Maggies came back to keep the margin less than a goal at the first break. The second stanza was also pretty even and we went to the sheds just 10 points up •t h•lf time. We then stampec our authority on the game in the 3'' quarter outscoring TRYC by 16 points while kick,ng into a strong (and gusting) wind and we went on to kick 5 goals B behinds to 2 goals 2 behinds in the wind assisted final quarter. We won every quarter with an even team effort where some of the youngsters (Tony Aubrey, Andrew Craig, Steven Barnes, David Peiper, Jason Dorazio and Luke Sutton) had their efforts matched by some of the veterans (Paul Piercy and Gavin Hofer!) - you just can't beat a good blend of youth and experience! Luke Sutton won the mug in h,s first outing for the Club and he was closely followed by Ondi (Andrew Craig) and Poomba (Paul Piercy) with Tony Aubrey and Scott Brown not too much further behind.A big thank-you to the award donors: D&J Carey Roofing, A Grade Carpet Cleaning, Murrumbidgee Agencies, The Farmers Home Hotel and The Duncans (Palm and Pawn and Black Swan Hotels). We have been given good coverage so far by The Daily Advertiser and also The Border Mail. Make sure you get both these papers Monday and also the tlorder Mall on Thursdays when they preview the next round. We also need to get the 1994 Premiership Re-union organised ASAP so, if you can help in any way please let Dick Carey, Kevin Cross, Peter Keating or Col Shipard know so a

break. The first round of the home and away season saw us up against old rivals The Rock at Maher Oval under lights. Langtry Oval is still a work in progress; hopefully we'll be back on our "hallowed home ground' soon. Harrow's Magoos had a big task, with a lot of new and young faces taking the paddock. Given some time to bond both on & off the footy field they'l l be a force to be reckoned with. Darren O'Donnell went hard all day and for his efforts won the Mug. Nails won the Dinner for two and Harrow's chip of the old block Dylan and Craig Farrell shared the 6 pack.

Paddy's 1" XVIII tried hard all game with some promising signs showing through in the second half. Gav Graetz led by example throughout the game deservedly winning the Mug. $50 went to Shane Boucher, $30 to Brad "Freddy" Langtry and $20 to the newly blonde Fla no. Bourkey and Tim "quick as lightning" Hilton also had good games. Conditions weren't all that great as the game progressed under lights as the dust-hampered visibility. Fitness is very very important in telling how we'll match it with the better sides so lets all get behind our coaches and each other and try and get to every session.

In the netball we will field four teams this year, which should all be quite competitive. A big thanks to Karen & Donna for helping prepare our training court out at Marrar, it is really appreciated. Also don't forget, for your chance to win the "supporters six pack" come along and support our Netball teams. C grade saw a familiar face take the court in the red & black and she hardly missed a shot at goal - Leanne Mathews -won the socks, however they went down 49-23. B grade was an excellent game with nearly all-new faces we showed we'll match it with the better teams, however we ran out of legs in the last quarter and were beaten 43-41. New face Tracey O'Reilly won the Dinner for Two. A grade saw The Rock win 65-32, however there were positives to be taken from the game. Another new face Rachel Bennett won the Hair Unique voucher.
