SEPTEMBER 25, 2013 \ The weekly review 3
Opponents of a massive redevelopment of Moonee Valley Racecourse have been given a tremendous boost with
VicRoads emerging from left field to criticise the racing clubs proposal to effectively build a new suburb and create huge traffic and pedestrian safety issues.
There have been 200 submissions to the government-appointed advisory committee that is scheduled to make recommendations about the development to the Planning Minister before years end. But the quality and quantity of submissions may force the committee into 2014 before completing its assessment. No committee could do justice to the submissions in just eight to 10 weeks.
As the states roads authority, the VicRoads submission confirms what residents and the council have argued for two years the extra pressure on existing roads will create chaos and VicRoads has major concerns for the safety of pedestrians.
The racing club has done little work about the potential impact on roads if the master
plan is implemented, says VicRoads. The peak roads body reminds the planning committee that additional areas rely on the same roads and public transport, and only so much spare capacity can be granted for the racecourse redevelopment.
VicRoads is adamant the development in its present form will adversely affect the local street network and place unnecessary pressure on the existing arterial road and public transport networks.
Its support of the councils and residents arguments will be appreciated, especially as none of the traffic impact assessment and modelling prepared by the racing club acknowledges the future growth of the Moonee Ponds Activity Centre.

Meanwhile, historian Dr Andrew Lemon has accused the racing club of ignoring
The historian, a racing club member since 1970, is critical of what he says is the clubs continuing policy of making major decisions without reference to the membership as they attempt to sell the farm. All its capital is to be squandered or repudiated, he says, because the club believes the economic capital is contained in the land and its value, and the buildings, if given heritage protection, would be seen as liabilities.
The Essendon Historical Society is vigorously opposing the development because of the racing clubs planned destruction of heritage areas.
President Judy Maddigan has nominated the Burston Stand, Manikatos burial site, the club secretarys house and Edna Walling Garden, Alister Clark Rose Garden and the horse stalls as important heritage sites.

Moonee Valleys history and heritage. Dr Lemon is immediate past president of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and author of many books and publications about thoroughbred racing. He has told the advisory committee that if the development
is approved, at least it should be done honestly.
He fears the racing club is consciously destroying a significant Australian heritage place. Any consideration of heritage and history has been
merely an afterthought, he has submitted. Dr Lemon says the
development will not give Moonee Valley racing a long-term future, predicting cost and time overruns. The realigned racecourse will at best be a nine-day wonder, sacrificing all the virtues of the existing racecourse and its distinctive place in Australian history.
There will be no positives for the community and Moonee Valley will become a nightmare environment for a period of years.

Kathy Lette has forged a glittering career by being candid. As a bestselling author of 13 books including the iconic 70s novel Puberty Blues she has covered everything from fidelity to hormones, toy boys to motherhood, divorce to
silicone. Yet there has always been one off-limits topic: her eldest child, Julius Robertson.
When Julius was three years old, he was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, otherwise known as Aspergers syndrome, a lifelong neurological condition that affects how the brain processes information particularly reading social situations and non-verbal cues. Characteristics of Aspergers can also include an exceptionally good memory, above-average intelligence, a very blunt and factual communication style, and an ability to focus deeply and obsessively on one subject.
Lette says from the moment she heard the paediatricians diagnosis, she made a conscious decision not to talk publicly about Julius condition.
I didnt want to invade his privacy, says Lette on the phone from her home in Londons West Hampstead.
I wanted his permission before I did talk about it, and I was incredibly nervous because, up until a couple of years ago, it was something people werent talking about. It was something you hid away if you had a child who was different.
Now Lette has not only written a bestselling book on the subject, Aspergers syndrome will also be the focus of her keynote address when she visits Melbourne next week for the University of Melbournes Festival of Ideas.
Lette, now 54, grew up in 1970s southern Sydney and achieved fame and notoriety as a teenager with her groundbreaking tell-all book about teen surf culture, Puberty Blues, which she co-wrote at 17 with Gabrielle Carey. The books cult status and Lettes irrepressible chutzpah catapulted her into work as a columnist, TV presenter and writer on an American sitcom.
A chance meeting with human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson on his ABC TV show Hypothetical in 1989 swept her out of her marriage to future News Ltd boss Kim Williams and over to London, where she married Robertson and had two children (Julius, now 21, and Georgina, 19). She quickly immersed herself in Londons intellectual set, socialising with the likes of Salman Rushdie, John Mortimer and Douglas Adams.
Today, the writer known as Ms Quiplash for her razor-sharp wit, is neighbours with Stephen Fry and Barry Humphries, plays Scrabble with Kylie Minogue, attends red-carpet premieres with Billy Connolly, and calls Ruby Wax, Ronni Ancona, Maureen Lipman and Sandi Toksvig her human Wonderbras.
Yet despite the high-profile friends and public life, Lette didnt start talking about Julius condition until last year, when he turned 21. The catalyst was her 12th fictional book, The Boy Who Fell to Earth. Originally penned as another novel about the sex wars, the book quickly manifested itself into a story about Lucy, a single mother trying to raise her autistic son, Merlin.
It started pouring out at the end of my pen and I couldnt stop writing it, Lette says. I thought, Well, Ill publish the book and not mention my son was on the autistic spectrum, and let the book stand on its own two literary legs. But then a journalist in Sydney from The Australian Womens Weekly said, Isnt it true you have a son with autism? And I thought, well Im not going to lie because if I lie it will look like Im embarrassed by Jules, and of course the opposite is true. Im incredibly proud of him, so I asked him what to do.

tHe HIStory oF ASPerGerS SyNDroMe
1944 Hans Asperger, a Viennese child psychologist, publishes a paper about what he calls autistic psychopathy based on the behaviour of four boys who appear to have a lack of empathy, intense absorption in a special interest, and clumsy movements.
1981 British psychiatrist Lorna Wing publishes case studies of children showing similar symptoms. She calls it Aspergers syndrome (AS).
1992 AS is included in the 10th published edition of the World Health Organisation diagnostic manual, International Classification of Diseases.
1994 AS is added to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association.
2013 Since May 22, with the release of the DSM-5, Aspergers syndrome officially no longer exists. The manual contains a new disorder that replaces the old autistic disorder and Aspergers syndrome. Its called autism spectrum disorder. \
Jules loves the book and thinks its such a celebration of people like him. So with his love and support I very tentatively started talking about it. But I was a complete nervous wreck, because if you write comedy or satire for a living, that is your shield.
Lette believes her speech next week on Asparagus Syndrome at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre will offer an opportunity to celebrate individuality. There is no such thing as being normal and abnormal, theres just ordinary and extraordinary, she says. For people who have a child on the autistic spectrum, its a bumpy ride. You need to fasten your psychological seatbelt, but it can also be a great joy and offer a different perspective on life, which can only be enriching.
As well as being open about the harrowing and heartbreaking side of raising somebody different in a judgmental world, I also want to make it a celebration of their idiosyncrasies and eccentricities. Because, as my son always says, how boring would it be if we were all the same.
He calls it a case of the bland leading the bland. As you can see hes inherited my pun gene.
Lette is not the first author to use autism as a central theme in her fiction. Her exploration joins a long line of novels, including Mark Haddons bestselling The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,
Jodi Picoults House Rules, Kathryn Erskines Mockingbird, Lisa Genovas Love Anthony and, most recently, Melbourne writer Graeme Simsions runaway success, The Rosie Project, whose protagonist, Don Tillman, shows many traits most commonly associated with Aspergers syndrome.
Don Tillman is a man who is better with ideas and projects and things than he is with emotions and people, says Simsion, who recently returned from Los Angeles, where work has started on The Rosie Project film script for Sony Pictures.
I think most of us have known somebody like Don, and many of us have a little bit of Don in us So many people have come up to me and said, Oh hes just like my brother, or my father-in-law. They make that instant connection.
The prevalence of children on the autistic spectrum has risen dramatically in the past five years. Before 1980, one in 2000 children was thought to be autistic. By 2007, the Centres for Disease Control in Atlanta, US, was reporting that one in 152 American children had an autism spectrum disorder, such as Aspergers syndrome. It now believes the figure is one in 88 children or one in 54 if you count only boys, who are more susceptible than girls.
Professor Tony Attwood, at Brisbanes Griffith University, is one of the worlds leading authorities on Aspergers syndrome. He believes the increasing prevalence is mostly due to growing awareness, rather than a rise in incidence.
I think the number has been there all the time; its just that now were able to identify the characteristics better of someone who is autistic, he says.
Although Attwood says there are major differences on either end of the autistic spectrum, he firmly believes that every case needs support and guidance.
I often use visual impairment as a metaphor, he says. There are those kids who are blind, and then there are those kids who need glasses. The ones who are blind, are blinded to the social world, and those who need glasses are the ones who can see it, they just need to read really big print. In other words, some kids need a bit of help making friends and understanding body language and socialising, whereas there are others where thats impossible.
Attwood first met Lettes son when Julius was about 10. He says he is delighted at how well Julius has turned out, and describes Lette as being lovely and wonderful.
I give all the credit to Kathy as she has brought Aspergers through a medium she knows best and has been able to reach people in ways a professional cant, he says.
Aspergers brings out the best and worst. The best is people like Kathy, who are committed and supportive. And the worst are the school predators, who bully and tease people who are gullible, naive and vulnerable.
Lette says those raising a child with high-functioning autism face similar challenges. There can be large periods of a day in which their behaviour is perfectly conventional, and then moments when it is not.
It can be incredibly traumatising and distressing and difficult, she says.
What I worry about in this scramble for funding, is that [just because] people with autism dont have a white stick and they dont have a wheelchair, it doesnt mean they dont need our help and theyre not worthy of it.
If you ask most mothers if you could cure it, they would, because as a mother its so painful to watch them suffering, and not understanding emotion, and misreading social situations. They torture themselves so much and their anxiety levels are often so high, its hard to try to cope.
But, despite the challenges, Lette says there are many moments of joy. She talks about Julius amazing and insightful comments, and the importance of always having a sense of humour even if it is so black you need night-vision goggles just to see your way through it.
One of Lettes favourite stories is the time Hugh Jackman came over for dinner. While flirting outrageously with the Australian actor, Lette says she was soon interrupted by the arrival of Julius, who was 13.
I said, Look darling, youre growing a moustache, she says. He just scrutinised me, and said, So are you, Mum, look at those hairs on your top lip and there are quite a few on your chin as well. I thought, is it too late to put him back in the condom-vending machine for a refund? It was like my contraception arriving on a plate You just never know when the grenades are going to go off.
She also recalls the time she met former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe Lette is an avid Labour
supporter at a charity event in the British House of Commons. As she introduced Julius to Widdecombe, he said, Oh youre the one my mother says is two-faced, and if so why are you wearing that one that is all wrinkly and crinkly and old?
Lette continues to champion the cause for autism. She is an ambassador for Britains National Autistic Society and a patron of British autism charity Anna Kennedy. She has also connected with other mothers of autistic children and receives dozens of letters and emails.
When youre a parent of a child with special needs, you do feel isolated a lot of the time, she says. I really wanted to let other parents know that youre not alone and we all go through the stages.
Even as we speak on the phone, Lette is interrupted by a friend seeking advice about schools for autistic children. She talks passionately about finding the right education, and how more than half of autistic teenagers are bullied at school.
It was hard when Julius was a teenager, because all my friends children were going on gap years and down the Amazon and up the Himalayas and getting work experience at Vogue and top barrister chambers. And your heart just pours out because you think, your son will never leave home, or have a girlfriend, or do anything like that But look at my son now: hes got his own flat, he has a beautiful, gorgeous girlfriend and is starting college. You just have to put trainer wheels on them. \

14 The weekly review \ SEPTEMBER 25, 2013
we welcome your feedback @ www.theweeklyreviewmooneevalley.com.au
This week Ive been privileged to view some very special real estate.
It is not every day a child will open their cubbyhouse for inspection, but my new young friend is justifiably proud of hers. The eponymous Rosies Place is a bijou masterwork
of love, handcrafted by her dad Vic and colourfully hand-painted by the seven-year-old occupant herself.
It was his first major construction. Like most men I own a hammer and a saw for odd jobs, but I had never ever actually built anything, Vic says. It was pretty much designed to her plans. She was definitely the project manager. I imagined something on a much smaller scale. I was like cant it just have one storey, be like this big? he says with his hand at waist height.
No, insisted Rosie, it had to be two storeys. There had to be stairs on the inside instead of the outside.
It had to be tall enough for a grown-up on the top level because she wanted to share it with me from time to time. There had to be a balcony, plus a cat flap for Rosies feline friend Cranberry full name Cranberry Marmalade to come and go as she pleased.
We had never owned a place before and I promised her when we get our own place I will build you a cubby. And she kept me to my promise, Vic says.
I thought it might take a week or two weeks and I am out here in 40 degrees with sweat coming out of my eyeballs ... bang, bang, bang. It took me all summer. It was a big labour of love. We had a rough year last year. Her mum and I split up, her grandpa died. I just wanted to do something nice. At a time of considerable
heartache and upheaval, the cubby project became a form of therapy for father and daughter as she worked out the new family dynamics between her parents.
Taking me on a tour, Rosies eyes shine with pride. I have a kitchen clock that plays music and there is even a chair on the balcony. Last week I spent four hours in here just reading, she says.
It is just as important for children as it is for adults to have spaces they can call their own, where personal belongings and special treasures can be stored.
From very young ages, kids will seek out small child-sized places where they can hide away. And as they grow older, they like forts of imagination they can share with other kids.
The very word cubby makes me feel snug with memories. Sadly in the increasingly space-constrained indoor world of kids governed by helicopter parents and endless by-laws, the improvised cubby in the bush or shack in a tree is not an option. But must that mean even a childs own backyard becomes foreign land?
Not so long ago I asked a year 10 student on work experience in the newsroom if he had a Hills Hoist in the backyard of the home as we needed one for a photo shoot, and was horrified to discover he genuinely did not know had no idea although he had lived in the same house for most of his life.
I dont know, I never go out there, the would-be journalist replied.
Sometimes, dont you just want to pull a sheet over and curl up into a small hole? \

CAf With a sustainable mindset and their hearts in hospitality, Jason Currie, Rob Cecchinelli and Sebastian Fichera designed and planned a sophisticated-yet-homely caf in Essendon. The view across the road to the park was a location linchpin for Pascoe Vale South resident Currie, who says he spent 7 years looking at an industrial wasteland while at Rays Caf. in Brunswick.
Form, named by Currie as both an arrangement of parts and for-mum, dad Martin and his wife Maree Kim, opened in early June.
Currie says the sleek, minimalistic look he hoped to achieve was created with the help of an architect friend who spends time in Melbourne and Switzerland.
We wanted to achieve an inviting space that complemented the north-easterly aspect of the building, he says.
Compostable plates and takeaway coffee cups are used in the caf, which does not sell bottled drinks but rather its own house-made lemonade and blueberry-ade. The goal is to create a minimal impact on landfill waste is composted and offered to local community gardens, says Currie.
The home-style food, created by Currie and chef Nathan Coffey, includes the Breakfast Club sandwich with poached eggs, tomato and farmhouse bacon; a cheese and onion square with leeks and onions braised in white
wine under a blanket of cheddar, and the Tutti Frutti smashed avocado, grapefruit, tomato and feta. There might be a pork belly brioche roll with coleslaw or perhaps a braised lamb roll on the lunch menu.
Perrin McKirdy, a former staff member at Rays, helps out a couple of days a week too.
bAristA Theres always a time and a place that marks the turning point in a coffee fanatics working life. For Robert Cecchinelli, that was the juncture in his 20-year hospitality career when he joined Jason Currie
and his team at Rays Caf. Cecchinelli spent 2 years at Rays
and another 18 months at Bean Counter Caf in Fairfield honing his specialty coffee skills. For the past year or so, hes worked as a start-up man at friends cafs in the northern suburbs. He and the barista team at Form work with Sydney-based Campos Coffees Superior blend.
We chose it as we found it was a good all-round coffee. Its a fantastic blend that goes with either black or with milk and has a great chocolatey finish, he says.
A long black will hold mid-palate notes of maple syrup and pecans with a rich stone-fruit finish. The prize-winning blend is complex and fruity, and a standout on the Melbourne coffee scene. \

ention the word Heathcote and the first word that springs to mind is shiraz. Its the regions most widely planted grape and its shining light,
but the region thats built on ancient red Cambrian soils north of Melbourne is far from being a one-trick pony.
Heathcote has been referred to as the Australian Rhne Valley, with a continental climate that starts off cool in Tooborac and warms up as it heads north towards Colbinabbin. Just like the Rhne, a wide variety of grapes flourish, but its only more recently that grapes other than shiraz have started to grab some attention.
Five years ago, around 80 per cent of the Heathcote wine region would have been planted to red grapes and, of that, 80 per cent would have been shiraz, says Stephen Shelmerdine, proprietor of Shelmerdine Wines and a former director at Wine Australia.
Certainly in the past three to five years new [vineyard] plantings have started to emerge and we now have a Josephs coat of different varieties and blends. Its a much more interesting region than perhaps people thought it was going to be. People were perhaps a little conservative in their approach in the early days and planted shiraz, but didnt chase other varieties.
The arrival of Brown Brothers, which plants a wide variety of grapes and tests the wines success at its Milawa cellar door, and the Chalmers family, who are pioneers of Italian varieties, has made a big difference to the diversity of grape varieties planted in Heathcote.
These days youre just as likely to see fiano or viognier filed on wine lists under white wines, while tempranillo, grenache, and mourvdre will appear in the red wine sections. Despite many grape varieties and wine styles
thriving, Shelmerdine firmly believes that Heathcotes future and indeed Australias lies with wines
made from a blend of different grapes rather than single varietal wines. He sees Heathcote
being similar, in a way, to Bordeaux and southern France, where the wines of
Chteauneuf-du- Pape can include up to 18 grape varieties.
In my heart of hearts, I thought that interesting blends would be the way that Heathcote would eventually evolve. It will, but were not there yet, he says. Because of the
interesting experimentation in recent years, Heathcote could really carve out a
new niche for itself with really interesting blends.
While blends and a wide array of grape varieties may be Heathcotes long-term future, shiraz is the grape that put the region on the map. And as the new varieties find their feet, shiraz is also the regions best performer. Its potential is still to be realised after all, the region was only classified in 1998.
We started really noticing the characters of northern, central and southern Heathcote shiraz in 2005 after a terroirs tasting and by 2010 it was obvious, Shelmerdine says.
Broadly speaking, in the northern sites you get rich, ripe dark-berry, dark-fruit characters and by the central area you get a more subdued version of that. In Heathcote, on the granite soils, we are seeing lots of raspberry, violets, white-pepper characters cooler-climate characters. We see a savouriness wherever the fruit is from, provided its picked in 13-14.5per cent [alcohol] spectrum. \

Pho Viet33 Puckle Street, Moonee PondS, Phone 9326 0420
Melburnians have embraced pho (pronounced fah) as one of the healthiest soups, brimming with flavour.
Now the owner of Pho Viet, Hong Huynh, is introducing the people of Moonee Ponds to the wonders of this traditional Vietnamese
rice noodle soup. Our unique pho is the hero of our menu, says Hong Huynh.
Its made from beef, simmered for about 12 hours to develop its intense, warm flavour.
The pho comes with sliced beef or chicken breast, served with a squeeze of lemon, some basil leaves, a small handful of bean shoots, hoi-sin and chilli sauces, and a hint (or more) of fresh chilli.
Another menu star is the vermicelli salad
dish with grilled pork or chicken, topped with mixed lettuce, cucumber, carrots, a little chilli, peanuts and mint, served with a dressing sauce.
With traditional paintings on the walls serving as a reminder of the owners Vietnamese origins, the fully licensed restaurant is well equipped to deliver a memorable experience whether as a sit-down meal with family and friends or as a quick takeaway. \

In this age of meticulously managed publicity campaigns and social media blitzkriegs, I cant tell you how refreshing it is to stumble across a place that
just opened quietly of its own accord. Especially when it turns out that place is really quite good.
There are at least two dishes I had at Cucinetta that Ive been reminiscing about since the just-made curd that came wobbly and lukewarm from the kitchen, and a hot-poached cotechino sausage, heady with spice, on a knoll of barley smeared in salsa verde. Texture-wise, it was like burying your face in a hand-knitted jumper, and just as comforting.
Cucinetta has been winning local fans for just over a month. The tiny corner shopfront on Murphy Street in South Yarra, previously home to the cult Jamon Sushi bar with its $195-a-head omakase (chefs selection) dinners, is now a snug 26-seater of petite, recycled oak tables so tightly spaced youre likely to make friends with your neighbours as you both enthuse about the food.
Theres a bar area, which Im assured will eventually have a zinc top but is, at the time of writing, still draped in a stripey tablecloth. Above it, the blackboard menu lists the days dishes a handful of antipasti, four larger plates and one or two desserts.
The drinks list is similarly minimalist just five whites, five reds, all of them Italian grapes made here or there. Perfectly adequate, as is the offering of aperitifs, digestives and grappas.
Theres a slight problem with reviewing Cucinetta because the chef changed between my visits. Originally it was John Paul Fiechtner, who, it turns out, spent last year working in Paris at the exalted bistro Le Chateaubriand, No.18 in the Worlds 50 Best Restaurants list. Its safe to say he can cook.
On the second visit it was Jack Gould, about whom I know little, except that he can cook, too. Perhaps his dishes werent quite as thrilling as Fiechtners, who was there only to help out with the opening, but theyre good enough to have you coming back for more.
Cucinettas cluey young owner Ben Dinning is keeping prices keen while he finds his market. Two courses at dinner cost only $26; dessert is an extra $10-$12, depending whats on.
The first bit of food comes in a paper bag. Warm bread from the kitchen, usually ciabatta or a focaccia seasoned with rosemary and roasted garlic.
First course might be a single antipasto dish, like the house-made curd with red peppers. Made from fresh milk that afternoon, the curd is so fragile it looks like it might revert to its original state at any minute. Draped with roasted red capsicum strips and some piquillo peppers for bite, it dissolves on the tongue.
On my second visit, Gould crumbled ricotta cheese over a dish of halved cherry tomatoes seasoned with virgin olive oil, salt and pepper and pungent basil leaves. Simple and delicious.
Dinning might also offer a tasting plate of antipasti so diners can alternate between firm olives and silky pancetta cruda (pork belly bacon) with plump caperberries, and perhaps some pickled beetroot with
walnuts. Second course will likely be a pasta or light main. That terrific cotechino has been on the menu both visits, the second time served peasant style with white beans and tomato.
One of Goulds specialties is gnocchi so light and luscious tossed in the simplest sauce of burnt butter and marjoram, using the herb so sparingly it is an aromatic undertone rather than overwhelming the delicate nuttiness of the darkened butter sauce.
We try the orzotto too not a form of miniature pasta as its name suggests but barley, riddled with firm bits of broccolini and softened leeks. Comfort food without the heaviness. Dinning says he doesnt want diners rolling out the door.
Desserts are also considerate. Theyre usually fruit-based, as in the roasted peaches with vanilla cream and little shards of hazelnut praline, and a banana poached in a coriander seed- and bay-infused syrup, from which Fiechtner had made a remarkable caramel to drench the fruit. A dollop of creamy, organic yoghurt is the only defence against the double sugar hit of the caramel and crystallised chocolate crumbled on top. Its not the prettiest dish but it pings around the brains pleasure centres like a pinball machine.
Regardless of whos behind the stoves, Dinnings little kitchen has won me over. Im also sure therell be line-ups out the front within weeks. \

Aberfeldie resident Bev Shannon, an 11-year member of Niddrie Country Womens Association and current president, finds joy in
community work.
What is your favourite eatery and place to get a coffee?I sometimes have a bite of lunch with CWA branch members or other friends at Calmer Cafe in Fawkner Street, Aberfeldie. My favourite thing to eat there is the bacon and egg toastie or, if they have them on the menu, a country-style pie. They also make the best coffee a cappuccino is my brew.
Where is your neighbourhood retreat spot and how do you spend your downtime?Maribyrnong Park, on The Boulevard, near The Boathouse restaurant. My husband and I take two-year-old Ash, a gorgeous Indian girl whose mum had occasion for our help after the birth, to play in the playground or have a barbecue there. We havent any grandchildren so Ash is like an adopted one; we love her to bits. I dont have much time to myself but, when I do, I tinker with different crafts. I also love being part of the Cafe on Queens, a space at Queens Park nursing home that, each Tuesday morning, we set up as a cafe/meeting place for residents who cant get out much.
What change would you like to see in your patch?Eliminating graffiti would be a good start. And deterring hoons who, last year, threw eggs at my outdoor Christmas decorations. On a more serious note, Id like to see somewhere established for single parents to meet for support. They often do it tough.
Where do you go to snag a clothes bargain?I head to Millers at Westfield shopping centre in Airport West. But I also enjoy finding clothing items at Helping Hands, a church-run op shop in Fullarton Road. \

Ken Fletchers bounty of premierships is pinned to his heart.
In the memorabilia-filled Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School clubrooms, the renowned junior football coach snakes his finger across past triumphs as though they had happened yesterday.
Have a look at this. Theres a few good names in there, he says, pointing to the schools 2007 Sun Shield victory. A quick scan of the glistening plaque uncovers names like Trent Cotchin, among the followers.
Id never seen him play, Fletcher says of the now-Richmond wunderkind who transferred from Parade College to play footy with Fletcher.
The first time I saw him kick it I said this bloke is better than Luke Ball.
Fletcher, a 264-game star of the Essendon Football Club in his heyday, is well credentialled to make such judgements.
The 65-year-old was born in Nhill in country Victoria and the family moved around more often than a kid with worms, even calling Flinders Island in the Bass Strait home for a time. I never really played football because the places we lived in didnt have an oval.
Fletcher found his way to East Keilor by virtue of his fathers job as an air traffic controller at Essendon Airport.
Tragedy struck the family when his father died of cancer when Fletcher was just 11. They say my dad was a pretty good country player when he was young, says the son, trying to account for his own prodigious talent.
Fletcher flunked year 12 at his first attempt at Niddrie High but knuckled down the following year and eventually made it to Melbourne University.
Football seemed to snowball from there, and
Profile \ a footy legend is about to hang up his boots, writes robert fedeleEssendon became his world. The dashing wingman captained the side for three years and, at his peak, won a best-and-fairest.
Fletcher points out players werent earning the bundles of cash they do today and his foray into teaching wasnt simply a fallback.
It was hard times. I remember one year we had our first child in a one-bedroom flat. I was captain, teaching full-time, and going to university twice a week.
He began teaching physical education at PEGS in 1989, and the first Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria premiership was secured two years later. This years crop of footballers handed Fletcher his 10th such flag, with a three-point victory against Trinity.
Another personal benchmark was geared towards beating Kilmores powerhouse Assumption College. At last count, Fletcher has it 17-15 in his favour from his time as coach. That was a secret little goal for me, to try and get ahead of Assumption.
Fletcher has seen many of his players go on to AFL ranks. They include his famous son Dustin, who captained the school to a flag and played in one with Essendon during the same marvellous season of 1993.
Fletcher recalls: I just said to him youre the captain and were not gonna win if you dont play because Assumption will probably beat us so Ill leave it up to you and he decided to play for the school.
Fletcher will retire from PEGS this month after 25 years at the helm and the school is marking the occasion with a gala dinner at Etihad Stadium to honour his contribution. Its been a good run. We werent recognised at all [as a football school], but now we are around Australia. It gives me a sense of pride. \

Motoring \ rod easdown finds a new way of getting a car, one piece at a time
Theres a new way to buy cars. Dodge in America has stolen an idea from the wedding industry. You know about
wedding registries, where the happy couple nominates a wish list at a department store and their fortunate guests get to buy them something from it? Would you believe the Dodge Dart Registry?
If you want a new Dodge Dart (its about the size of a Mazda 3) but dont have the wherewithal, you simply establish an on-line registry and invite anyone you can think of to buy a part of it on your behalf. Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter.
Cheapskates will go for a tier-one gift such as a handbrake lever or a warning lamp, but your true friends will be right up there with a tier-four gift and get you an airbag or two, or maybe the entire engine.
Smart would-be car owners set up their registry when several gift-receiving opportunities are imminent, such as birthdays, Christmas, graduation or whatever. And they can thank their benefactors with just a click or two.
Eileen Wunderlich from Dodge in the US says this is the first time a car company has created a crowd-funding platform to encourage people to buy a new car. Since the idea was launched in January, nearly 7000 people have set up registries, many of them students moving out of home for the first time.
However, the number of cars that have been fully funded in the first six months of the plan
Things you didnT know abouT moToring Statistically, anyone spending $20,000 on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle will spend an additional $4000 on Harleys own custom accessories, clothing and merchandise.
is rather more modest. That would be two.But the longer Wunderlich speaks to me, the
more I get the impression that the whole exercise is about creating awareness of the car through social media rather than scoring sales. The number one objective of the registry is to build awareness of the Dart, she admits. It has been created so people can engage with the brand and view it as digitally innovative. Those who sign up for a registry, and those who sponsor parts, are learning about the cars features. The
registry thus becomes a secretly educational tool. And weve learnt that social media can be
used to make the process of buying a car more approachable to more people. A
fund-raising goal can be anything from a down payment to the full price of the car.
The nice thing about it for Dodge is that, once registries are established
and people start contributing, registry owners feel a growing moral
commitment to the purchase. While theres no contractual obligation on them to buy, and
contributors are warned that recipients can use donations any way they please, at the end of the day theyd have to live with a whole lot of questions from curious donors. \
