Acadian Museum authors Warren and Mary Perrin will discuss their new book tled
Seeking an Acadian Na on: The 1930 Diary of an Evangeline Girl.
This real‐life story, in words and vintage photographs, tells of the epic 1930 journey of 25 "Evangeline Girls" led by Sen. Dudley J. LeBlanc, which he called the “First Official Pilgrimage of Louisiana Acadians to Grand‐Pré, Nova Sco a.” The trip, which celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Acadian Deporta on, marked the first me Cajuns returned to their ancestral homeland and began the process of a grand reunifica on between the
Acadian families of Canada and their cousins in the United States.

N V W V D honors the men and women who served and sacrificed during the longest conflict in U.S. history. The commemora on’s primary objec ve, as penned by Congress, is to thank and honor our Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the na on.
The commemora on recognizes all who served on ac ve duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any me during the period of November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of duty loca on, and their families. No dis nc on is
made between veterans who served in‐country, in‐theater, or who were sta oned elsewhere during the Vietnam War period. All were called to serve and none could self‐determine where they were sta oned. In addi on to commemora ve pins presented to the veterans, the commemora on also created a Cer ficate of Honor Program to recognize four dis nct subcategories of Vietnam veterans and their families:
1) Former, living American military POWs from the Vietnam War as listed by the Department of Defense
2) Immediate family members of American military personnel listed as missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War by the Department of Defense
3) Immediate family members of a veteran who is listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
4) Surviving spouses (at the me of death) of veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces at any me during the period from November, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of loca on.

The Ascension Parish Master Gardeners Associa on under the direc on of the LSU AgCenter is holding its spring library series of educa onal workshops with gardening and landscaping ps geared to both novice and advanced gardeners. The March workshops to be hosted by the Ascension Parish Library are: Louisiana Iris: From the Wild to the Garden— March 3, 6:30 PM, Gonzales Patrick O’Connor, Iris Hybridizer and Board Member of the Society of Louisiana Irises, will discuss the five na ve species of Louisiana Iris and their history, the early discovery of these plants and their progress to modern cul vars through hybridiza on, current efforts to preserve the wild form, and the growing culture of the irises in water and regular garden soil. Crea vebug, one of our newest databases, has a variety of cra and art projects accompanied by in‐depth video tutorials. On March 17, we will work our way through an easy‐to‐follow video lesson on how to make custom fabric baskets. Par cipants will learn how to sew a dimensional project with straight s tches, apply iron‐on interfacing, and finish off a project with decora ve trim. These cute li le baskets are made from just two pieces of decora ve fabric and trim and have many organiza onal uses. This is a great project for beginners.

Join the Ascension Parish Library during the Count on Libraries: 2020 Census movement for census informa on sessions scheduled to bring awareness of what to expect for 2020 and how crucial this process is to our community. The census is a count of all persons living in the United States, and it is conducted every ten years by the federal government.
Mr. Jeffery Duhe, Partnership Specialist with U. S. Census, will discuss how the census will greatly impact the future of Ascension Parish and the status of our community. As Ascension Parish con nues to grow, ensuring a complete and accurate count is extremely important. It will alleviate the stress on our roads, schools, and emergency services, and it will have far‐reaching impacts on poli cal representa on and government funding for our community.

CENSUS CORNERS … You can count on the Ascension Parish Library during the Count on Libraries: 2020 Census movement for online access. For the first me, the U. S. Census Bureau will promote online response as the preferred method.
Beginning mid‐March, the U. S. Census Bureau will mail census materials to households. Many households will receive a le er invi ng them to respond to the census online using a unique code. Responding by paper ques onnaire and telephone will also become op ons later for those who prefer not to respond online.
Remember, library computers with online access are available at all library loca ons during normal library hours to make sure all households have an opportunity to complete the Census ques onnaire online. To help prepare for more computer usage, “Census Corners” will be set up at the Gonzales and Donaldsonville loca ons. Also, if you normally visit the library’s outreach vehicle at the many stops across the parish, online access will also be available to respond to the census.
The future of Ascension Parish depends on all of us standing up and being counted. Count on Libraries: 2020 Census events are being funded by a Library Census Equity Fund Grant from the American Library Associa on.
Come to the library in Galvez and make a great piece of art! We’ll show you how to use acrylics to paint a simple pre‐designed masterpiece. The library will provide paint, brushes, and canvas.

1946—France reoccupies French Indochina following the end of World War II. 1946—The Viet Minh launched a rebellion against the French authority governing the colonies of French Indochina. 1949—France officially recognized the "independence" of the State of Vietnam as an associated state within the French Union. 1949—The Vietnamese Communists obtain outside support from Chairman Mao Zedong of China just across the border. 1950—The United States began to give military aid to France in the form of weaponry and military observers.
1950—North Vietnam gains military aid including arms and troops from China and the Soviet Union
1950 to 1954—North Vietnamese Soldiers under the leadership of Vo Nguyen Giap gain military supremacy over South Vietnam and French Troops.
1954—The Geneva Conference creates territorial integrity and sovereignty of Indochina and separated Vietnam into two zones: a northern zone to be governed by the Viet Minh, and a southern zone to be governed by the State of Vietnam.
1954—France pulls out of Vietnam following it's losses at the Ba le of Dien Bien Phu and the Geneva Conference.
1954—Vietnam was temporarily par oned at the 17th parallel crea ng a North and South Vietnam.
1958 to 1960—North Vietnamese guerilla incidents against South Vietnam increased gradually.
1959—North Vietnamese buildup military personal prior to a full scale military conquest of South Vietnam.
1960—North Vietnam escalates military opera ons against South Vietnam.
1960—The United States announces that 3,500 American soldiers are going to be sent to Vietnam.
Over the next few years, the war escalated on both sides eventually
ending in 1973 when the U. S. pulled out of Vietnam following a North
Vietnam victory.

Popular manga magazines that run mul ple comics, like Shonen Jump, o en rely on popularity polls to see if an ar st’s comic will con nue to be published. This month, we’ll have the first annual Library Jump Manga Crea on Contest. Teens will be able to fill in comic panels with their own artwork and/or words and vote on who made the best mini comic. The comics will be scanned, printed, and bound into a special issue of Library Jump, and the winner will get a prize!
Kokusaika is Japanese for “interna onaliza on,” and that’s what this club is all about. If you’re interested in cosplay, anime, manga, gaming, etc., then this club for teens is for you! Open to all teens ages 12‐18. Cosplay is welcome. For more informa on, call (225) 647‐3955.

Are you super excited about your upcoming spring break and summer vaca on? Your stuffed animal deserves a break too! That’s why the library is hos ng a super special stuffed animal stayca on. Drop your animal off on Tuesday night, and we’ll read them a bed me story and tuck them in before you leave. Then, we’ll provide them with a few nights of fun, games, and relaxa on. Pick them up on Saturday morning and make a cute cra for yourself. When you get home, check Facebook to see photos from their stay with us.
Stuffed animal drop‐off will be at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 17 in Gonzales and Galvez, and March 24 in Dutchtown and Donaldsonville. Please only bring one stuffed animal friend and make sure it’s one that you can spend the night without. Did you know that Story me begins at birth? Ascension Parish Library offers a variety of story mes for children from birth through age five. All of our story mes are fun, interac ve, and engaging, and promote early literacy skills. We’ll make learning fun, and your child’s face will light up with excitement as they sing along with their favorite songs and par cipate in interac ve picture books. Story me is also great for boos ng your child’s social confidence, and you’ll be amazed at how much they come out of their shells in just a few short weeks as they interact with other children and our staff. Children are not the only ones who benefit from the social aspects of story me. As a parent, you’ll get to know other parents who have children of a similar age and stage.

Discovering E‐Mail March 17 – 10:00 AM ‐ Gonzales Write le ers and instantly send them anywhere in the world with the touch of a key? It is possible! Welcome to the world of e‐mail! The workshop will cover a brief history of e‐mail, discuss its uses, cover the various types of e‐mail (such as online service, web‐based e‐mail, pop‐mail, etc.), discuss the features found in e‐mail, and feature hands‐on e‐mail prac ce. Already having some internet and computer experience will be helpful to par cipants.
