COMMUNITY BANKINGThere IS a Positive Future for Community Banking

"What you do counts!; We have been here before; Some chick-en, some neck!; and

Sanity will awake!" These and many other words of wisdom and encour-agement were offered by J. Michael (Mike) Woody Sr. to a crowded room of bankers at the ICBA/NM 21st Annual Meeting in Taos, NM. Woody offered his remarks during his hour-long edu-cation session on July 29. Woody is a well-known and well-traveled, community banker, bank con-sultant, teacher/trainer, and expert wit-ness. His career spans nearly 40 years, including bank leadership positions in TN, OK, and CO; banking school fac-ulty positions in CO, TN, LA, and MS; and as a consultant to more than 150 banking clients in 44 states. He knows his stuff and is PASSIONATE about the future of community banking. Below are highlights from Woody’s comments on the four strategies he says community bankers should em-brace for a positive future.• Markets Focus on your own markets but look for new markets. Don’t be afraid to look at slow growth markets that the big banks are leaving.• Shareholders Love on your shareholders. Remem-ber your bank cannot get enough capi-tal. Look for innovative ways to raise capital; do you have an ESOP?• Employees You should care about your employ-ees and embrace the people that cre-ate value for your franchise.• Regulators Regulators are not your enemy, but they should not be confused with bankers. In the current environment, there is no room for being a jerk with your regulators Q
