Dear Students, Parents/Caregivers and Friends

Thank you, Parents/Caregivers, for ensuring students were dressed in their blue and black school uniforms for school photo day! Only one shirt needed to be changed and half a dozen pairs of socks to be pushed down. There were no ‘milk moustaches nor peanut butter beards’ either. Congratulations Team Moura SS!

Another proud principal moment came on Parade on Monday while watching the choir singing in front of a very respectful and considerate audience. I look forward to this super audience behaviour at next week’s Community Concert. Watching the Choir sing, and Band perform, in front of Kianga Hall full of people is also going to be another proud principal moment.

The ‘Olympics’ theme of our Festival float is timely considering we have just welcomed home our Olympians and are about to cheer on our Paralympic sportspeople. Paralympic athletes, and the effect is applying this spirit to one's personal life.

ATTENDANCE – EVERY DAY COUNTS

As you can see from the table there continues to be some shifts in attendance – some up and some down. A huge congratulations to Year 3H for achieving the highest attendance rate for Weeks 1-5 in Term 3!

We now only have 7 of our students with 100% attendance. Congratulations to you for being so healthy and for having a strong commitment to learning.

Students with less than 85% attendance will receive closer attention about the reasons for absences. With 51 students or 19% (52 students for the end of Term 2) at less than 85% attendance, many questions need to be asked – What are the explanations for absences? How can these students improve their attendance? How can we as a school community help these students? Good attendance is a team effort!

DRILL PRACTICES

A lockdown drill was held late last week. We were very impressed with how everyone on site responded – thank you. Just a couple of classes needed to be reminded about the importance of remaining quiet for the whole period of the drill.

COAL AND COUNTRY FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES

Community Concert: See the information further in the newsletter. A letter has also gone home to all families. If you have any

questions about your child’s class dance, please contact the relevant class teacher.

Festival Parade: The theme for the Moura SS float is ‘Olympics’ so students who wish to participate are welcome to come as their favourite Olympic sportsperson or come dressed in their sports uniform. An Activity Consent Form will be sent home outlining details of what to bring, where to meet before and after the Parade etc. Once again, a huge thank you to our P&C representative Mrs Krista Becker for coordinating this activity for our school.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Focused Teaching

Approximately 15% of all students in any school

or classroom may require additional support to

meet behaviour expectations, even after being

provided with differentiated and explicit teaching.

These students may have difficulty meeting

behavioural expectations in a particular period of

the day or as part of a learning area/subject, and

focused teaching is provided to help them achieve

success.

Focused teaching involves revisiting key

behavioural concepts and/or skills and using

explicit and structured teaching strategies in

particular aspects of a behaviour skill. Focused

teaching provides students with more

opportunities to practise skills and multiple

opportunities to achieve the intended learning and

expected behaviour.

Support staff, including teachers with specialist

expertise in learning, language or development,

work collaboratively with class teachers at Moura

State School to provide focused teaching.

Focused teaching is aligned to the Expectations

Matrix, and student progress is monitored by the

classroom teacher/s to identify those who:

• no longer require the additional support

• require ongoing focussed teaching

• require intensive teaching.

Moura State School has a range of Student

Support Network staff in place to help arrange

and deliver focused teaching to students who

need more support to meet expectations. In

addition, the school invests in the following

evidence-informed programs to address specific

skill development for some students:

• You Can Do It!

• Functional Based Assessment

• Zones of Regulation

Intensive Teaching

Research evidence shows that even in an

effective, well-functioning school there will always

be approximately 5% of the student population

who require intensive teaching to achieve

behavioural expectations. Intensive teaching

involves frequent and explicit instruction, with

individuals or in small groups, to develop mastery

of basic behavioural concepts, skills and

knowledge.

Some students may require intensive teaching for

a short period, for particular behaviour skills.

Other students may require intensive teaching for

a more prolonged period. Decisions about the

approach will be made based on data collected

from their teacher or teachers, and following

consultation with the student's family.

For a small number of students who continue to

display behaviours that are deemed complex and

challenging, then individualised, function-based

behaviour assessment and support plans and

multi-agency collaboration may be provided to

support the student. This approach will seek to

address the acute impact of barriers to learning

and participation faced by students who are

negotiating a number of complex personal issues.

WELLBEING—Week 6

This week the topic was ‘The Power to Cope

– Resilience’. After sharing the book entitled

A Big Guy Took my Ball by Mo Williams,

students focused on making a plan to cope

with bullying. The message was about

everyone of us can be powerful. We might

not control those around us, but we can have

power over our thoughts, our feelings and our

reactions. When we use our resilience, we

can learn to cope with situations that might

sometimes feel terrible, horrible or awful and

see that we CAN stand it. We CAN get

through it. Just because it is bad, it doesn't

make it the end of the world.

Thank you, Mrs Townsend, for helping our

students to develop strategies to look after

their wellbeing.

Prep F News This term in Science the

Preppies are using their senses to explore and observe the weather in their environment. Prep F know that the weather can change, affecting the activities they do and what clothing they wear. They are also learning about the impact of daily and seasonal changes on plants and animals. What better way to investigate than dressing up and exploring?

Dawson Valley AFL Tournament Last Friday, Moura hosted round three of the Dawson Valley AFL tournament. The first game saw the mighty Moura Mustangs take on the undefeated Theodore team. With Rylan giving great service from the ruck to Samuel, Jack and Max, the Mustangs took control of the first half. Thanks to Billie with 2 goals and a goal each to Nick and Samuel, Moura went into the half 4.2.26 to Theodore’s 2.2.14. With a lead at half time, we moved players around the field to give everyone a go and the team did exceptionally well in the second half with Ebby kicking 2 goals and a goal each to Archie and Max. The Mustangs were victorious

over the previously undefeated team to win 8.3.51 to 3.3.21 resulting with Moura having a 5 goal win.

The second game saw us take on Woorabinda and they had some big bodies! Woorabinda were too fast and strong for our Moura team. Woorabinda led at half time 5.4.34 to our 4.3.27 with goals to Ebby, Jack, Kaleb and Billie. The Mustangs got within 2 points early in the second half with goals to Spencer and Kaleb, but Moura never troubled the scorers again in the game and

Woorabinda ran out to win the match by 31. Final score Woorabinda 10.10.70 to 6.3.39.

Tomorrow we will play against Theodore at Theodore SS. Any support and encouragement from the sidelines would be most

appreciated. Hopefully next week our report will detail how the team won the grand final!
