When was that happening? The second week of learning at school has dimmed the timeline as to when we were teaching and learning in a very different way. Students have done well in adjusting to the changes in their routines at school eg lining up in different places after meal breaks, varying where and how they can play, handwashing times and locations, entering/exiting the school grounds. Parents/caregivers, it has been difficult for those of you who enjoy being able to escort your children to their classrooms and to support them in their daily getting organised for class routines. Not being able to help out with reading groups has also been difficult for you as has not being able to chat informally with your childrens teachers. Be assured that your children are doing very well in organising their own gear for the day. Also be assured that teachers are missing their reading group helpers and informal chats! Keep being strong about not coming into the school grounds. Remember that you can touch base with your childrens teachers by email or via phone call through the office before/after school. Dear Students, Parents/Caregivers and Friends,

Learning at home? When was that happening? The second week of learning at school has dimmed the timeline as to when we were teaching and learning in a very different way. Students have done well in adjusting to the changes in their routines at school – eg lining up in different places after meal breaks, varying where and how they can play, handwashing times and locations, entering/exiting the school grounds. Parents/caregivers, it has been difficult for those of you who enjoy being able to escort your children to their classrooms and to support them in their daily getting organised for class routines. Not being able to help out with reading groups has also been difficult for you as has not being able to chat informally with your children’s teachers. Be assured that your children are doing very well in organising their own gear for the day. Also be assured that teachers are missing their reading group helpers and informal chats! Keep being strong about not coming into the school grounds. Remember that you can touch base with your children’s teachers by email or via phone call through the office before/after school.

Reducing the core teaching and learning to English, Maths, Science and HPE for the last five weeks of the term has allowed for increased time in the day/week to focus on these subjects. Some classes have already completed Maths assessment tasks. Many have started on sections of their English tasks. Students are definitely demonstrating A/B achievement standards as well as C for most.

Teachers will be undertaking an after moderation process in Week 9 to ensure that what students have produced is demonstrating the achievement standards. This process also helps cross check that a ‘C’ in one class is the same as ‘C’ in another class of the same year level. Moderation processes help develop teacher quality and supports curriculum implementation – our two improvement areas for 2020.

THANK YOU Our friends from Anglo-American Dawson Mine are to be thanked for their generous donation of anti-bacterial wipes for use across the school. The donated laptops are being put to good use in classrooms. Staff and students learnt so many IT skills during learning at home so the momentum around IT skill building needs to be ongoing.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

be listed. Report cards will be distributed by email at

the end of Week 1 in Term 3. No formal parent-teacher interview period

will be offered, but parents are certainly welcome to make a time to touch base with teachers.

BOOKWORK EXPECTATIONS Further in the newsletter is information about our school’s bookwork expectations. There are set ways for ruling up books – margins, date, ruling off after a lesson. It is important to note that our books are not for drawing and scribbling in.

LUNCH BOXES Please ensure your child has at least a sandwich (or similar – rice cakes) and a piece of fruit in their lunch boxes every day. These are much healthier options than roll ups, chocolate coated muesli bars, little packets of chips. Such items are a treat after eating the healthier things. Students are also discouraged from having cordial type drinks. Water, juices and milks are recommended. Chocolates, lollies, soft drinks are NOT allowed to be consumed at school.

JEWELLERY, MAKE UP, TATTOOS AND FINGERNAIL POLISH No items of jewellery, other than a signet ring, gold or silver sleepers or gold or silver small ball type stud style ear rings or ‘medic alert’ bracelets are permitted due to Workplace Health and Safety Guidelines. If additional jewellery items are required, the wearing of such items must be negotiated with the Principal.

The wearing of temporary tattoos and makeup, including fingernail polish is not permitted. Students will be required to remove these as requested.

PARKING AROUND THE SCHOOL Please be reminded that there are set parking spots around the school and that road rules apply. Staff park on the rail line side of Gillespie Street to allow space for parents to park on the school side of the street for drop offs and pick ups. There should be plenty of space on this side of the

street for parents to angle park and thus limiting the need for students to cross the street.

In addition, note that the front of the school is angle parking (rear in). Please ensure this is what you do when you are dropping off and picking up.

Also note that in Masters Street (the street that runs along the prep side through to the Rec Grounds) parking is limited to certain areas. Parking on the bike racks side of the street and into the Rec Grounds, especially on the school side, is NOT a safe option.

Please ensure you park correctly and obey the speed limits. Children’s safety, and yours, are our top priority!

SKATE PARK Students are to come from home straight to school every morning. NO stopping at the skate park for a play. The same is to happen in the afternoon. Students are to go directly home to check in and then go where they are allowed to.

RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN Schoolwide Expectations Matrix: Attached to the newsletter today is the matrix of expected behaviours in various locations around the school. The behaviours are clustered under the 4B headings of Be Courteous, Be Learning, Be Responsible, Be Safe.

ON THIS DAY June 04: 1789 The first theatrical performance of the new colony, The Recruiting Officer, is acted out by convicts.

1924 Audio is successfully transmitted for the first time between Australia and England using Guglielmo Marconi’s experimental station. Marconi announces, “There will be no distance in future over which we cannot telephone”. Yours in Education

Persistence means trying hard to do your best and not giving up when something feels like it’s too difficult or boring. Examples of persistent behaviour are continuing to try even when school work is hard, not being distracted by others and checking work when it’s finished to make sure it’s correct. Positive Habits of the Mind that help develop a young person’s Persistence include: I Can Do It - thinking that I’m more

likely to be successful than I am to fail. Giving Effort - thinking that the harder I

try, the more successful I will be, and knowing that success is not caused by external factors (luck, ease of task), but by internal factors (effort).

Working Tough - thinking that in order to be successful in the future, I sometimes have to do things that are not easy or fun in the present.

Call to arms: help protect

our kids from the flu this

year

Flu (influenza) is dangerous. In Australia, severe flu infections are the leading cause of hospitalisation for kids under the age of five. Annual vaccination is the best protection from the flu because the virus can change yearly. Vaccination is safe and free for Queensland children from six months to the age of five. Book an appointment with your GP or visit the Vaccination Matters website.

Queensland Virtual STEM

Academy

The Queensland Virtual STEM Academy at Central Queensland is a unique partnership between the Department of Education (DoE) and CQUniversity (CQUni), with the vision and drive to achieve improvements in education outcomes and workforce participation in Central Queensland. Rockhampton State High School leads the collaboration with CQUniversity and aims to boost engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for Years 5 to 9 students across the Central Queensland region. The project enables like-minded students to connect, collaborate and explore their STEM interest and passion through a range of enriching and challenging learning opportunities.

Students engaged with the QVSA project are collectively known as the QVSA Young Scholars. With the goal of developing 21st century skills (problem solving, inquiry, critical thinking, creativity and collaboration), the Young Scholars build their STEM portfolio through a blended model of delivery via virtual and face to face learning that incorporates emerging sciences and current global STEM problems.

During Term One and Two Cash, Spencer, Sophie, Jacinta, Rosabella and Giselle developed their ability and fluency in using the iSee virtual platform. The students collaboratively accessed and gained experience in using a number of other software platforms (Tinkercad, OneNote and Padlet). This skill builder course is designed to equip students with the necessary scientific inquiry skills to progress into a Grand Challenge in Round 2. During Term Two and Three the students will be participating in a ‘Grand Challenge’ of either Bushfire Reduction or Missing the Night (the effects of light pollution). The students will use their skills developed in the Skill Builder program to research, gather evidence, speak with specialists in the field and then develop a solution to their issue.

VISIT BY REGISTERED NURSE FOR FREE PREP VISION SCREENING

Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development. A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school on the 27

th July 2020 to conduct

vision screening for children in their prep year. If you wish to have your prep child participate in this free vision screening program, please complete and sign the consent form that has been sent home with your child and return this to your child’s class teacher by the 8

th June 2020. Parents

do not need to be present for screening, however if you would like to be, please contact the school to arrange this. If your child’s vision is screened, you will be advised of the results in writing. If a vision concern is found, you will receive a phone call from the nurse to discuss referral to an eye health professional for further assessment. If a vision concern is identified and your child requires glasses, eligible health care card holders may be assisted with free basic glasses through the Spectacle Supply Scheme. Participation in vision screening is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening. If you have any questions, please contact the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program on 1800 687 372.
