Now that all successful and enjoyable celebrations are over we once again return to “Our Snippets of History”. Don’t forget if you can recall events in our history after 1974 please contact the MMPAD office. Records need to be kept for our future generations.

1920: Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith (the first England to Australia flight in October 1919) flew into town and landed opposite Newman Park, now a residential area. They were on a mission to sell Peace Bonds and if you donated a certain amount of money you were treated to a joy flight. Naturally the visit caused a great deal of interest for locals.

1922: A big fire in Morgan Street (just up from the Leichhardt Hotel) burnt the businesses of Kelly and Sons, Groceries, Duffy Bros., Drapers and Hempenstall Bros. Commission Agents and Auctioneers. In that era we had no fire brigade or town water supply.

1923: Anzac Night saw the School of Arts building; the Imperial Hotel and a number of shops go up in flames. This was the second school of Arts building to be burnt down. The Imperial Hotel was considered one of the leading hotels in Mount Morgan at that time.

1924: Miss Beryl Mills (the first Miss Australia) paid a one night visit to Mount Morgan and was a guest of the management of Birch Carroll & Coyle the owners of the Olympia Movie Theatre (opposite the Presbyterian Church). It was a joyous occasion with both the hall and area outside packed to capacity.

The present School of Arts was built at a cost of $6000 but due to the down turn of the town it was never lined or ceiled.

On June 24th the Mount Morgan High School Past Pupils was established with Mr Harry Tomkys (Principal of the School) as the first President. This organization proved to be one of the most active, enjoyable, creative and sporting organizations in Mount Morgan for the next 40 years. Over those years hundreds of ex-students participated in and enjoyed their youth years due to that organisation.

1928: Heavy rain (56 inches recorded) filled and overflowed the Big Dam resulting in loss of human life in the area where the Fletcher’s water scheme is situated. A centre section of the No 7 Dam wall also got washed away.

Mount Morgan lost its famous “Carlton House” (former Directors, residence built in 1885- 1890). It was situated on the site of the present Manual Training building of the High School. It was relocated to Yeppoon and became part of the St. Faiths Girls School.

4 Restoration work on Mt Morgan’s Hunslet picks up steam

It may still be a little time before we hear its whistle or see billowing clouds from its chimney, but Mount Morgan’s steam train is now one step closer to full restoration.

Last Friday saw a boiler inspection carried out on the former Mount Morgan Mine locomotive; a major milestone for the team who have been working towards the train’s return to operation.

The inspection was conducted by members of the Australian Sugar Cane Railway (ASCR), who have been working with the Rockhampton Regional Council and Mount Morgan Rail Museum over the past months.

“The inspection saw ASCR conduct a Hydrostatic test of the boiler,” member of the ASCR, Ross Driver said on the day’s assessment.

“During this period the boiler passed its cold water test - which is a very uncompromising examination.

“Mount Morgan Rail volunteers and Council staff had conducted ultra sonic thickness testing of the vessel in the lead up and this was checked by ASCR. Their efforts were excellent.”

“The readings indicated that even though the boiler was built around 1903, it was in a sound condition.”

Mr Driver said a commissioning report is now being prepared by the ASCR team for the best ways to bring the Hunslet back into service in the upcoming months.

“When all the recommendations have been carried out there should be no reason why this locomotive cannot continue running for many years in the future,” Mr Driver said.

“It’s a tribute to the builders from Leeds who built such a strong engine.”

Manager of Arts and Heritage for the Rockhampton Regional Council, Peter Owens says the recent inspection work is an exciting step in seeing it operating again.

“With any boiler, tests are conducted to ensure they are fit for use.

“The boiler test is one of the final stages of the restoration of the Hunslet locomotive.”

Mr Owens said the project’s current progress is a credit to all involved.

“It has been a lot of work to get to this stage, and the assistance provided by the volunteers of the Rail Museum to Council staff has been invaluable.”

“Although there is still a bit of work ahead, things are definitely moving in the right direction.”

Last week marked National Volunteers Week – Australia’s largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism.

The annual event celebrates the efforts of the 6 million+ Australians who volunteer in their communities each year.

Dozens of Mount Morgan residents make up this valued group; dedicating time and effort to the local community and supporting one or more of the area’s services, clubs and committees.

For long term local Col Turner, volunteering within the Mount Morgan community has been something that has brought great joy, and up until just a couple of months ago, was something he did each week for more than two decades.

Mr Turner (pictured right) began volunteer work with the Mount Morgan Meals on Wheels close on twenty five years ago and has only just recently hung up his hat.

On his retirement, Mr Turner was presented with gifts and a certificate of appreciation by the Mount Morgan Meals on Wheels Committee, in recognition of his invaluable and long term support to the local service.

Discussing his involvement with the local organisation, Mr Turner said he commenced volunteer work when he stopped working at the Mount Morgan Mine.

“I was looking for something to do,” Mr Turner said. “I had just finished work at the mine and thought I would help out in the community where I could.”

Mr Turner began delivering meals on the town run and quickly developed a passion for assisting the community.

“I loved every minute of it.” Mr Turner said.

“Getting older now I thought it was time to settle back a bit, but if I could, I would still be doing deliveries.”

“It’s a wonderful experience - you are able to meet different people and also help others when they need it.”

More on Mount Morgan Meals on Wheels: Mount Morgan’s Meals on Wheels works together with the Mount Morgan Hospital to see meals delivered to members of the community three times a week; with cooking carried out by staff of the Hospital and deliveries and visits made by Meals on Wheels volunteers.

Last Thursday’s Mother’s Day morning tea was yet another great morning for the Golden Mount Social Group.

Members were kept amused throughout the morning with local entertainers, and special guest entertainer Jim Lynch singing and telling some of his many jokes.

A few of the members travelled from Wowan for the event and some lucky members even went home with prizes from raffles and the lucky door.

Amongst the many goodies for the crowd to enjoy was a Mother’s Day cake – which Freda McDougall (pictured) had the honour of cutting.

Last Saturday saw around 80 Mount Morgan residents enjoy the annual Mother’s Day Cent Sale for the Saint Mary’s Anglican Church.

Over 200 prizes, raffles and lucky door prizes were won and taken home as part of the event.

The day’s major raffle - a large basket of groceries was won by Don and Lavina Hale, with the second prize, (a basket of groceries), going to N. and A. Todd.

Four lucky ladies were presented with potted chrysanthemums for Mother’s Day. These were presented by Noel Kearney, in memory of his wife Margaret – who was the founding organiser of this event.

The Parish of Saint Mary’s sincerely thank all who donated prizes for the event, and who helped in any way.

A sincere thank you also goes to the Mount Morgan residents for their generous support in making the event a social and financial success.

As temps begin to drop, many are getting ready for the return of winter.

For a number of people across the region, preparations this year will not only include pulling out that extra bed blanket, but also stitching one or two.

The work comes in aid of the 2013 Homeless Connect – an annual initiative assisting people experiencing homelessness.

The event provides an opportunity for those who are without safe and secure housing to attend a day offering support and basic essential services, provided by a number of local services and agencies.

The lead up to this year’s event is seeing a number of people around the region heed the call for assistance by organisers; stitching blankets and clothing items – to be distributed as part of the day.

Jennifer Betheras, Mary Greany and Marion Lloyd (pictured above) are among those clicking their needles in support.

The local ladies make up part of the ‘Lively Knitting & Crochet Club’ – a local group that meets at the Library weekly; working to see a huge stockpile of wool (donated by the community) stitched into blanket squares, beanies and scarves for the 2013 event.

With the event just over one month away, the Rockhampton Regional Council is welcoming all knitting enthusiasts to join in on the weekly meets, held at the Mount Morgan Library each Friday from 10am – 11:30am.

Those interested in knitting from home and dropping in woollen items to the Library are also welcome.

More on the 2013 Homeless Connect: The 2013 Homeless Connect will be held in Rockhampton on the 20th of June.

Mount Morgan’s old school charm comes to the fore in many areas of its structure and in events held within the town boundaries. This is made even more prominent when people born here have witnessed decades of its growth and change. Much of the town has changed over the years but the feeling of pride and respect has stayed in the hearts of those having the good fortune of living through the changes over a long period of time.

Chris O`Leary, born Christina Cole, was born at the original Mount Morgan Hospital on the 4th of December, 1940. An only child, Christina remembers her childhood as being filled with love, respect, music and laughter.

“My dad was born here in 1906 at the Range Road, Poison Creek and his father was a timber cutter for the mine. Dad was born in a tent near poison creek bridge and it was always a laugh when people would ask if he was born in a tent after leaving a door open. They found it hard to believe he actually was.” Her dad was an honorary member for Rotary. “Back then only business people could be actual members but dad always played music for them.”

Her dad also had his own music band. Chris’s mum and dad were married in 1936. Her dad played championship tennis for many years and his last finals were played when he was seventy four years old. Bette Broom was one of her dad’s doubles partners.

Chris says she always liked school and English was definitely her favourite subject. “My essays were grammatically correct but I had no imagination,” she laughs.

Being an animal lover Chris always had dogs when she was growing up and got her first cat when she was thirteen years of age. Cats have been in her family ever since.

Chris’s grandparents moved to Moonmera then to a house in Baree. They then moved opposite the old railway station in Baree until they both died quite young (in the 1940’s). Her dad was either the fourth or fifth born of twelve children.“My great grandfather was a teamster for the mine so we were here basically when the town first opened,” she states with pride.

The family came out from England in 1888 on the last voyage of a vessel called The Quetta (an emigrant ship). As it was going through Torres Straight on the way back to England it hit an unmarked reef and was wrecked, drowning approximately one hundred and twenty people. Chris has an old cabin trunk at her home that actually came from the Quetta.

Chris is proud of her name Christina as it has now passed down through five generations that she is aware of. Her grandmother was called Tina for short, her mum was called Eena and her daughter and grand daughter both have Christina in their names. The name has carried through since 1884 when they came out to Australia. “My mum’s side of the family came out from Uig, from the Isle of Skye up in that area of Scotland in the mid 1840’s”.

Both Chris’s children (twins) were born in Mount Morgan and were educated in the town she loves so much. Her son Shaun, an officer for the Salvation Army, is married with two daughters. He loves music and is into computers. Her daughter Kerry, a marathon runner, used to be a hair dresser until carpel tunnel cut her career shorter than she would have liked. She is married with a son and a daughter. “She loves her marathons but isn’t into music except for listening to it” Chris chuckles.

Chris and her dad both went to Calliungal North in their primary school years and attended the high school in Mount Morgan as well. “Three generations of my family attended the high school here. All were born in the Central Queensland area. Grandma and grand dad Cole lived in Mount Morgan all their lives. Grandma Cole had her first child in 1893 and her last was born in 1923. She had twelve children. A lot of years to be having children,” Chris says with a grin.

Chris and her partner John both love Mount Morgan and couldn’t think of anywhere else they’d prefer to be. Their home is one hundred and seven years old and was built for the original owners named Reid, when they were married in 1906. Chris and John actually met when John was trying to find out about the history of the house and have been together ever since. “Frank Malloy was the postie back then and was helpful in finding the people who could assist with the information John was looking for.” Chris and John acquired many of the photos of the house from the time it was built and they are some of their most prized possessions. Before then Chris owned the old Tea House on the corner of the Razor Back turn off.

Being a music lover from a very young age Chris has enjoyed learning piano and singing. She is still involved with the Rockhampton Musical Union and the Bouldercombe Singers.

In future issues of People in Profile we hope to bring you more extracts from Christina’s interesting life. There is also talk of a poetry DVD being produced to capture more of her experiences through her life’s journey.

It’s often said that “to every action there is a reaction”...

Well, thanks to a local goodwill initiative, a number of actions are having some very exciting ripple effects in the Mount Morgan community of late.

It’s known as “Anonymous Friends - Random Acts of Kindness” and in a nutshell, the name and tagline says it all.

Established by Mount Morgan resident Mark Ricks last November, the program has been adopted by a number of local businesses, offering customers the opportunity to carry out a random act of kindness.

The program is founded on the concept of paying it forward for others, and allows patrons to carry out a good deed by purchasing a particular item for an unknowing, future shopper.

The item is tallied by the assistant behind the counter, and this is later given as a gift to someone else.

Since its establishment, the program has been well received in the community and has seen kind-hearted acts carried out in various participating stores daily.

Mount Morgan News member, Georgia Page has had the opportunity to witness the movement first hand.

“It really brightens people’s day,” Georgia said.

“People often pay forward a paper or coffee, and lately even magazines.”

“The people receiving the gift are always really happy and surprised when they go to pay for the item and are told that it’s already been paid for.”

Georgia said the action often doesn’t just stop there, with many who receive a gift also paying something forward for another.

“It’s constantly continuing through the community.“Almost every person who receives an item then pays something forward.”

The 2013 Golden Mount Festival:Wow what a fantastic event the 2013 Golden Mount Festival was!

The Kindy Care team certainly had a great time attending and taking part in the event.

In the lead up to this year’s event, parents, children and staff of Kindy Care worked together to prepare for our float entry in this year’s Street Procession. We had a great time taking part and were also lucky enough to receive a trophy for the ‘Best Use of Recycled Material’ as part of our entry.

We would like to thank everyone for contributing time and effort to the costumes and float - the expressions on the children’s faces made the day a success. A sincere thank you also to all who assisted and supported our raffle and stall on the day.

The Friday evening’s event as part of the Festival also proved a very exciting time for our team, when we were presented with an award for ‘Service with a Smile’, as part of the Pride in your Town Community Awards presentation.

Surprise gift from an Anonymous Friend:Last Tuesday saw Kindy Care treated to a lovely surprise – when we received a cake from Anonymous Friends - a great local initiative that is promoting ‘Random acts of kindnesses’ in the area. Thank you, the children all enjoyed the cake.

Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Awards:Our first Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Community Awards was wrapped up earlier this month – with a presentation held as part of the Golden Mount Festival’s festivities.

A sincere thank you to those who submitted nominations as part of these awards, and congratulations to the award’s nominees and winners!

As we hope to see this become an annual event, don’t forget to start thinking of who you would like to see recognised in the 2014 Awards. Our town is certainly made up of some very hard working and passionate residents, and these awards provide a great opportunity to thank them for all that they do.

Village Festival Road Trip – coming in July:In the lead up to the 2013 Village Festival at the Capricorn Coast this August, an exciting music event will be touring the regional area.

Talented musician Kate Leahy, with the help of the Keppel Coast Arts Council and Creative Capricorn is taking The Village Festival on the road, on a tour of regional and remote towns in CQ.

We are very pleased to announce that we have been lucky enough to see Mount Morgan added to their tour schedule! This event is set for an afternoon mid-July and will be held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts.

This event will welcome all local musicians and music lovers to a professional music workshop in the afternoon, followed by an event for the whole community in the evening, featuring live music.

The Mirani Electorate community can now have its say on shaping the long term future of the state through The Queensland Plan website.

Six questions, collaboratively developed at the summit in Mackay on Friday, are now online for all Queenslanders to answer and the answers will determine where the community wants the state to be in 30 years’ time, detailing our priorities for the future.

I was extremely proud to bring along three representatives from the Mirani electorate, and would like to thank Kerrilyn Page for her participation and contribution.

Community Forum

Assistant Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Lisa France MP addressed a community forum along with Mount Morgan Mine Rehabilitation Manager Samantha Pegg, to update the community on site rehabilitation works, water quality management and monitoring.

The forum also provided an opportunity for open discussion on a number of issues that were of interest to the community, and also gave residents an opportunity to ask questions of departmental representatives.

It is great to see our Government taking an interest in our local issues and look forward to achieving some positive results for the Mount Morgan Community.

As the mornings get chillier and our days shorter and the early evening air is scented with wood smoke coming from the numerous houses in the sleepy hollow, my mind wanders to younger days and to cold winter nights warmed by beautiful thick and hearty pea soup. I make a few different types of pea soup. This is one where I use both bacon bones and bacon and I also use kabana (a spicy pork sausage). I use the 2 different coloured split peas not just for flavour but for the fact that it gives me a rich warm earthy orange ochre coloured thick meaty soup which warms up even the coldest night. It does take a bit of time to prepare but it is certainly well worth the effort and I can guarantee you that the rest of the family will love your winter warmer. So please enjoy.

Ingredients:•1kg bacon bones•4 bacon rashers•2 med onions diced•2 med carrots diced•1 stick of celery diced•2 whole kabana sliced 2cm•250g green split peas•250g yellow split peas•2lt stock•½ teaspoon black pepper•2 tbspoon sweet paprika•3 cloves garlic crushed•extra 2 rashers of bacon for garnish (slice in strips and browned)

Method:First, soak the green & yellow split peas in cold water for 4 hours. Now fry the onions until clear. Add to 15 to 20lt pot or a slow-cooker. Add everything except the extra bacon. Bring to the boil and reduce to low and simmer for 2 hours, stir every 10 to 15 minutes to stop the peas from sticking to the bottom of the pot & burning. Once the meat is falling off the bacon bone, turn off heat and sit with lid on for 20 minutes. Stir before serving in a large bowl with some crispy bacon strips and a few toasted sour dough slices. Again I say a hot Milo or Hot Chocolate would finish the meal nicely plus I think a Sticky Date Pudding or a nice hot Baked Custard as dessert.
