Providing you with peace of mind

Admittedly the inclement weather of late has been “hot pie days” but please place your empty brown paper bag in the BIN not in the gutter. Think Clean Be tidy.

In conversation with some “Older Folks” recently, the subject of the loss of “Noises of the Past” came up and it revealed how many noises have gone, possibly forever. Of course the first that arose was our Mine Hooter which advised the workers to either finish their shift, or perhaps start a lunch break, and of course the happy times to bring in New Year. Sadly it had occasions when the news was not good. Then there was the noise of the Haulpak trucks, the two mills crushing away, and other mining operations that went on for the 24 hours.

Popular noises of the past were the whistles when the post man dropped your mail into the letter box or when the paper boy delivered the Sunday Mail. How about the chug chug of the trains passing through, their clanging noise, the mooing of the cattle being transported and the engine whistle blowing to warn of their approach.

Can you remember the policeman doing his rounds on his push bike and giving his bell a tingle to greet a friend with a happy wave or give a nod? Even the bells of push bikes are not heard much nowadays – skate boards have no bells.

One noise so popular in gone by years was the loud call by Mr Brown (farmer from Yeppoon) calling from his utility “Pineapples for sale”. Then it was a mad dash to catch him with your sixpence for a rough leaf pine. Another treat that was heralded by the noise of a bell ringing was Mr Lutz as he travelled along in his very attractive horse drawn cart advising that ice cream was only a dash away. It is a pity that these wonderful childhood sounds have gone for ever.

Lost also are many school bells and church bells and the housewives singing along with the radio as they did their housework. How many women sing in the house today? Where has the pleasant fun and noise from sing songs around the piano gone?

Then on a sad note, where are the sounds of the birds? Of course we have the crows and the cockatoos but where are the lovely sounds of doves, willie wagtails, kingfishers etc. These sounds are not heard so much today in our environment.

Have you a favourite noise that is missing today?

The Leichhardt Hotel family are pleased to announce that upgrades to the iconic building are continuing onward and upward, with renovations to the upper floor living spaces near completion.

Following eight weeks of recent works, the upgrade has left an impressive transformation to the accommodation and public spaces located upstairs of the Hotel; including new looks for the accommodation rooms, upgrade to the visitor kitchen and bathrooms, as well as the introduction of a book and video library for guests.

Leichhardt Hotel Licensee, Shelly Marty is delighted with the new look and feel of the hotel’s living space, with visitors and guests also approving of its changes.

“We have been looking to make changes upstairs for some time. We wanted to modernise the Old Girl, but also preserve her historic feel.” Shelly said. “We are really happy with how everything is coming together and have had really great feedback so far.”

The upgrade also includes the introduction of a new laundry facility, and the waterproofing and painting of the verandas.

“The larger jobs are near complete, but we still have ideas for the future.” Shelly said on further plans. “For a bit of fun we are looking forward to introducing our Patrons’ Wall upstairs. The idea is a corridor wall of black and white photographs of past and present patrons of the Hotel.”

The official celebrations for the renovations are set to take place this Spring, with a cocktail party. More details to be announced closer to the date.

Today as we arrived with our crazy and wacky hair styles consisting of ribbons, plaits, pegs and ponytails we were treated to a wonderful surprise.

To help us celebrate Cecilia had brought in some different coloured hair spray. After asking for permission we went outside and one by one Nicky sprayed our hair with all the colours. Some of us wanted stripes and some of us wanted dots. Sarah was then waiting to take a photo of us with our new crazy hair.

“Cheese” said Sarah as she aimed the camera. “Cheese” we all replied as the camera went *****flash*****

This week (July 2nd – July 8th) marks National Diabetes Awareness Week. It is an important time to keep in mind the symptoms of diabetes and if you may be at risk.

Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 Diabetes can occur at any age, but most generally is diagnosed from early childhood to late 30s. Type 1 Diabetes is often the result when the pancreas (a large gland behind the stomach) stops producing insulin. Without this, the body’s cells cannot turn glucose (sugar) into energy and resultantly burns its own fats as a substitute. Unless treated with daily injections of insulin, people with type 1 diabetes accumulate dangerous chemical substances in their blood from the burning of fat.

While there is currently no known complete cure for type 1 diabetes, management can be achieved through sustaining a healthy lifestyle, regular blood glucose testing and insulin.

Symptoms can include: • Continuously feeling hungry• Extreme thirst• Feeling tired and lethargic • Sudden and unexplained weight loss• Blurred vision• Frequent urination• Nausea • Dizziness• Vomiting• Infections• Leg cramps

Type 2 Diabetes:

Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic (long-term) disease marked by high levels of high levels of sugar in the blood. It occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or respond well enough to insulin in the body. Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of Diabetes, affecting 85-90% of all people with diabetes.

Symptoms can include:The symptoms of type 2 diabetes are similar to the symptoms of type 1 diabetes and include:• Fatigue • Urinating frequently, especially at night• Dehydration and drinking fluids excessively (staying continually thirsty, no matter how much you have drunk)• Weight loss• Blurred vision

Where can you seek advice?

Mount Morgan residents interested in seeking information regarding diabetes are encouraged to come along to the Diabetes Group, every third Thursday of the month at the Mount Morgan Hospital. No appointments necessary.

The Mount Morgan Hospital’s Diabetes Educator, Del Rowley is available to give you information on both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and the kinds of management and support available if you are diagnosed.

6In loving memory of Maryann Lamb

On the 11th of July, 1948, a well-respected and much-loved local Mount Morgan identity, Maryann Lamb passed away.

Her death left a deep void in the hearts and lives of her five children and the Mount Morgan Community. Her children, Margaret (Tilly) Tull/Bray; Janet (Nanna) Ware; Polly (Ettie) McArthur; Rose Toby and Samuel (Sam) Lamb survived her and remained in the area, and many of her descendants still do so today.

63 years later, on the 10th of July 2011, many of her descendants from the Wuragroup Aboriginal Corporation gathered at the Mount Morgan Cemetery to unveil a plaque and monument erected with assistance from Anne Black from the Rockhmapton Regional Council. The Rock, holding the plaque in her memory, depicts her Totem, the Emu, and five chicks in artwork designed and painted by Donna Anderson; her great, great-granddaughter. Guests on the day included; the then incumbent Councillor, Sandra O’Brien; Cherith Weis, Heather Quarry – local photographer/entertainer, and Mr Damien Morrissey – from Origin Energy (APLNG). An apology was received from Anne Black who was on leave at the time.

The “Welcome to Country” was performed by her eldest grandson, Frank Ware, and the “Smoking Ceremony” performed by another grandson, Noel Lamb, assisted by her great grandson Shayne Ware. Representatives from her five children’s families helped unveil the monument. All in attendance agreed it was a relaxing and moving ceremony, with afternoon tea following at the home of another grandson, Trevor Lamb and his wife Rhonda.

Wuragroup Aboriginal Corporation sincerely thank all those who assisted in making this such a memorable day!Rest In Peace Maryann Lamb (nee Crooke).

Obituary:Below reads Maryann Lamb’s Obituary, which appeared in the Morning Bulletin on Saturday, 17 July 1948:

Mrs M. A. Lamb Mrs Mary Ann Lamb passed away in the Mt Morgan Hospital on July 11. Aboriginal born, her birthplace is supposed to be in the vicinity of Moonmera, Mt Morgan line. Although the age at her death was given as 88, old residents say it was well on to the century mark. Her late husband, Mr Samuel Lamb, who was a native of Malaya, predeceased her many years ago.

Throughout her long life she was the guiding star of her family of five - one son, Mr Samuel Lamb, and four daughters, all of Mt Morgan, 29 grandchildren and 19 great-grand children residing in Mt Morgan. Mrs R. Toby, mother of the Toby boys, well known boxers and footballers, is a daughter.

She was a great friend of the Gordon brothers, who held as a grazing selection all the land now comprising a portion of the land on which Sandy Gordon, in company with the Morgan brothers, discovered gold on the hill that made the Mt Morgan mine the richest single gold mine in the world.

She often spoke of the injustice done to the Gordon brothers, who were induced to sell the whole of their selection, which now comprises the mine, for a nominal sum per acre. Gordon Lane, in the vicinity of Walterhall, was called after Sandy Gordon. After the death of Sandy, his widow was left penniless and had to accept charity from her friends in Mt Morgan. At that period there were no pensions.

Throughout her long residence she was always a familiar figure at every race, football or sports meeting.

Her funeral, which took place from her son’s residence, Horse Creek was well attended. The Rev. Father Bourke read the last sad rites at the graveside.Source: OBITUARY. (1948, July 17). WILDLIFE MATTERSby Trish Mathers (Wildlife Carer)

Ph. 0400 591 504

It never ceases to amaze me how people who find injured birds or animals attempt to feed it a.s.a.p. Seriously, if you had just been hit by a car or attacked by a predator, would you like another predator to try and feed you, often with something obnoxious (usually bread)? I have yet to figure out the reasoning behind it, but it must be absolutely terrifying for an already injured and vulnerable animal to be put in that position. It is not any wonder that so many of them die from shock. It is also a bad idea to try to give them water. If an animal has internal injuries, it quite likely needs vet attention and possibly an x-ray. It cannot be put under anesthetic if it has recently had food or water. The handling of an injured bird or animal could also make the condition much worse.

Birds have their airways under their tongue, so if you attempt to force it to drink water it will quite likely go straight into its lungs and will kill it within seconds. The best thing to do for any injured bird or animal is to keep it warm, dark, and quiet. Keep it away from dogs barking, kids running around or trying to handle it, doors banging, TV’s, etc. If you have a hot water bottle then fill it with hot (not boiling) water, wrap it in a towel, and place it next to the bird or animal and give it enough space to get away from it if it needs to. If you don't have a hot water bottle, then a heat pack or even a wine cask bladder will suffice. An old towel or piece of rag under the animal is always a good idea too. Then you can either take it to the vet's (you will not be charged) or take it to a wildlife carer who will then take it to the vet if needs be.

All native animals are protected under the Nature Conservation Act. They cannot be trapped, caught, kept as pets (there are permits available to keep some natives such as lizards – they must be captive bred however), sold, traded nor interfered with.

Flowers suitable for your spring garden display

Green Thumb by Murray Hare

The Annual garden competition for Mount Morgan is mere months away and if you’re one of those people who wanted to enter but deemed you’re too late… Think again!

You can still get your garden all pretty and ready for the judging. All you need to do is plant the little seedlings that don’t take much time to flower. These plants are Calendulas, Pansy, Poppy, Ranunculi (Bulbs), Anemone (Bulbs), Daffodils (if you plant them now), Snapdragons, Petunias, Marigolds and Cleomes.

All these plants require the same planting arrangements. Place them in full sun to part shade. Give them well drained soil and mulch the garden bed.

Now I know what you are thinking: “What are Cleomes?”

Well up until last year I would have given the same response. Cleomes are also known as the Spider Flower. Beautiful little flowers in bunches at the tops of large stems. They need well drained soil and a full sun position. They come in Pink, Purple, Violet, Maroon and White. Cleomes are designed to grow in the cooler climates but I successfully managed to grow some last year from a punnet of seedlings I bought. Trust me, they are a plant that is well and truly worth seeing. I currently have seedling Cleomes planted out in rows down in the garden bed near the first crossing in Struck Oil.

They don’t look like much now but in about 6 weeks they should be starting to show signs of colour. Come and check them out then if you’re still a little unsure about trying something a little different.

Ranunculi, Anemone and Daffodils.

Now you’re going to say that it’s definitely too late to plant these bulbs. That isn’t completely true. All you need to do is be able to obtain and plant these bulbs within the next few weeks. If you do this they should be flowering in time for judging.

All ranunculi, daffodils and tulips must be fed very well when in their leaf form.

Animal proofing your garden.

Now you may be like myself and have a massive problem with certain native animals.

My main problem is Bandicoots. They enjoy digging up the gardens around home and eating all my bulbs. Trust me, if you don’t get this sorted out it gets extremely costly in bulb replacements.

I have found that most native animals don’t like the smell of blood and bone, moth balls, naphthalene or anything that has a strong ammonia smell.

Be wary in your choice though. If you have a dog, blood and bone may not be your best choice as dogs love to eat it. It’s not necessarily good for them but hey, can’t stop everyone from eating stuff that’s not good for them can we?

I’ve found the dog does not like the smell of garlic paste or citrus. Mix up a strong batch of garlic paste and water in a container and place it around the garden. It will need to be topped up though.

Not all methods will work with all dogs though. You are going to have to experiment with different ingredients but make sure that you’re not using ingredients that are toxic to animals.

Free Appraisals! Local Agent Dedicated to you! Reliable & Dependable!

Mount Morgan’s Local Harcourt’s Agent!

The Mount Morgan Safe & Confident Living Social Group took 55 seniors out for the day to Baralaba Historical Village where we were served a lovely homely morning tea.

The buildings were all open for us to explore and exclaim ‘Oh I remember that. We had one of those. Mum had one of them etc.’ The buildings are so well preserved in their original form and well stocked with treasures from their era. It was very impressive. Col Major then came on the bus and took us all over town explaining the buildings and changes that have taken place in Baralaba over the years.

From Baralaba we then went on to Myella Farm-Stay where we were greeted by Peter, Olive and Lyn who produced a sumptuous lunch followed by desert. Peter gave us a rendition of his poetry which was entertaining.

After a walk around, the Mother’s Day raffle was drawn. Keith Watts had donated his own timber work by way of a Mantle clock as 1st prize which was won by Barry the Baker and 2nd prize was a large wooden biscuit barrel which was won by Margaret Hoehne. Thank you very much Keith.

We held a street stall last week and Joey James has made a tray to hold ice to present our meat tray raffles. Thank you so much Joey. The meat tray was won by Joey James. Ticket picked out by the Newsagent in front of a JP.

The next activity: The next activity will be our Bush Christmas lunch at the Welfare Bowls Club on Wednesday 25th July commencing at 12:30. $30 includes Corned Beef, white sauce, veggies and a plum pudding, lucky door ticket and a glass of Christmas cheer.

There will be a raffle and if you would like to bring something towards the multi-draw that would be appreciated.

Bookings can be made by phoning Margaret: 4938 1705 or Andrea: 4930 7324. If you need to be picked up, please mention this when you make your booking.

All rugged up and ready for fun to make a bus load mateIn anticipation of lunch at one past the Myella gateTo Baralaba renowned for coal to a place with many seatsWhere we meet with locals for coffee and tea with delicious sweets

No need to travel to the Outback to enjoy country hospitality When we can roll out of town 80 ks or two hours drive from Rocky PrincipalityTo the welcome smell of hay, the laugh of a kookaburra and the call of a calfThe antics of animals might light the spark to make us all laugh

The welfare and enjoyment of others is our concernChatter was uplifting and right as we rolled through Wowan

We drove straight through without turning left or rightHeading for Rannes seat belts tight and no hotel in sight

A few kilometres down the track we turn right at Cooper’s PlainWe are all of a one track mind hopeful it does not rainTravelling beside the rail line where the trains once runThe clouds have set sail as we enjoy the bright sunRolling along as the bus wheels spin on the Kokotunga trackLets hope our face shows a grin at this place on the way backOn the bus speakers the music comes loud and clearWe arrive in Baralaba in one piece have no fear

The Myella spelling is right we arrive in bright sunlightTo sit under the rosewood shelter to satisfy our appetiteA sight to see as each made their own coffee and tea just right

The Myella Team I must say must get top marksFor their country hospitality because the stay made us all laugh

Mount Morgan Vs. Cap Coast:

On a very wet 23rd of June, Mount Morgan Rugby Club played a home game against Cap Coast.

The boys played well, defending their place on the top of the leader board. The final score was 24-17 to Mount Morgan.

For the last six minutes of play Cap Coast tried hard to get over with a try, but were unsuccessful due to the strong defending by Mount Morgan. Troy La Master, Todd Toby, and Jerry Barney each scored tries. Scott Toby kicked 3 conversions and 1 penalty goal. Wade McEffer was chosen as Man of the Match.

We would like to thank everyone who came down to support the boys, particularly in the wet and cold weather.

Mount Morgan Vs. Frenchville:

28th June saw the club travelling through to Rockhampton to play, against Frenchville at Rugby Park. The boys played a great game, ending with a score of 43-0 to Mount Morgan.

Brad Fay, Nathan O’Brien, Troy La Master, Jerry Barney, Todd Toby, Kyle Toby and Che Anderson all scored 1 try each. Scott Toby and Todd Toby kicked two conversions each.

With eight straight wins, the boys are doing great working as a team to get the job done.

Man of the Match went to Scott Toby.

We would like to thank everyone who travelled to Rocky to cheer on the boys.

We have two byes coming up this season, with the 28th of July seeing the club playing at Rugby Park with a 3:00pm kick off.

As the winter chill is now here and the night air bites at your ears and Jack Frost is knocking at your door, this one will warm you from the inside out. So I thought I would share this lovely pork chop recipe which I got from a friend in the USA. Of course I’ve added my own twist to it and have increased the cooking time. And I now call it...

Mountain Micks Broiled Creamy Mushroom Pork Chops.

Ingredients:

1kg loin pork chops (center cut pork chops) 2 cans mushroom soup (I use Heinz ™ )1 can milk 440ml (use empty soup can)1/4 cup Soy Sauce (I would cut this back to 2 table spoons)8 large button mushrooms cut in quarters1 teaspoon ground black pepper350ml thick cream or 420ml of Light & Creamy. 2 tablespoon of corn flour mixed in a little water to make a runny paste to thicken the gravy.

Method:

Place pork chops in a baking tray. Now mix the milk and canned mushroom soup together with soy sauce and black pepper. Pour soup mix over them, cover with tin foil and bake at 210C º for one hour.

Now at this point, add the quartered fresh mushrooms, recover and cook in oven for 35 more minutes. After this, pour the gravy/soup cooking liquid in to a pot and add the cream or Light & Creamy. Bring to the boil, remove for heat. Add corn flour mixed in a little water now (I use a stab blender) into a lovely cream mushroom gravy. And as a bonus there is enough gravy to act as Creamy Mushroom soup as well.

Serve with mashed potatoes, steamed peas and carrots and some crusty bread. The sauce makes a great gravy on potatoes! Enjoy a nice hot cup of Mocha with your heart warming feast.

Winning streak continues for Mount Morgan Rugby boys
