Game Rules
An overview of the rules
A team can play the ball up to 3 times on their side of the net before playing it over.
Teams are encouraged to use 3 contacts - firstly playing the ball toward the net, then along the net,
and finally over the net.
A player cannot have consecutive hits of the ball.
A block does not count as a contact, so a player can block the ball and then play it again.
The ball may contact any part of the body above the waist.
Kicking the ball is permitted during play ONLY if both teams agree to the rule before the game. It can
be unsafe therefore both teams MUST agree.
To win the set
A set is won by the team which first scores 25 points with a minimum lead of two points. In the case of
a 24-24 tie, play is continued until a two-point lead is achieved (26-24; 27-25;).
To win the match
The match is won by the team that wins two (2) sets out of three (3) or the team leading when the
time runs out (45 minutes).
Play Faults
When learning, players should be encouraged to use good technique to reduce the chances of faults.
Players cannot lift, hold or throw the ball.
When the ball is ‘Set’ with an overhead pass to a third player, it should be one smooth and even action,
otherwise it is called a Double Hit.
The served ball must not be hit directly off the hand
Serve Rules
Upon regaining the serve, players rotate one position clockwise, and the new server is the one in the right-back
position.
The server must serve the ball from behind the court baseline.
The ball must generally be served underarm (overarm serves may be used is BOTH teams agree).
The ball must be off the support-hand when it is hit (unless a local rule permits a serve off the hand).
The server has 8 seconds from the whistle to serve.
The serve can hit the net on the way over

If a server wins 3 points straight, the team rotates for the next server to continue.
Net Rules
The net divides the court, and it should be taut and securely fixed, with protective padding over hard
surfaces of the supporting poles.
The support poles are considered out-of-bounds.
The serve is allowed to hit the net on the way over.
Players are not allowed to hit the net when playing the ball.
A player may brush against the net after playing the ball.
The ball can be played off of the net.
Line Rules
The area of play is defined the blue lines on the court.
When the ball is being served all players except the server must stand inside the court boundary.
A player may go outside the court boundary to play the ball, but they can't interrupt an adjacent game
to do so.
A ball, which hits the line, is called 'In'.
Substitution Rules
Teams are allowed a maximum of four (4) substitutions per game, total of ten (10) players per game.
Substitution order should be decided by the team prior to the first set. Substitutions are then rotated
in and out with each rotation. Substitutes rotate into the serving position.
Mixed Rules
Teams may have a maximum of 4 people of the same gender on the court at any given time. This
means that there may be at most 4 males on the court and similarly at most 4 females on the court.
Teams must plan there substitutes appropriately to ensure that the mixed rule is enforced at any given
time during the game.

Player/Coach/Spectator conduct
The YMCA bases our player, coach, manager and spectator conduct on our five core values, these are honesty,
caring, respect, and responsibility.
Honesty
All borrowed equipment must be returned to centre staff
All players must be registered prior to taking the court
Caring
Should your team encounter a problem with the opposition, an umpire or a spectator please approach
the Court Supervisor immediately. This approach should be made in a polite manner by the team
manager or coach. Addressing the situation during the game will provide the best opportunity to
rectify any problems. Should you feel that your complaint is not dealt with in a satisfactory manner by
game night staff, please contact the Centre Manager.
Management has the right to abandon games for safety of players, officials & spectators.
Teams can request management or front desk staff to watch their game as an independent witness.
Respect
At no time will aggressive, insulting or dangerous behaviour be tolerated.
No fighting or aggressive behaviour within the Complex whatsoever
No swearing, disrespecting behaviour or comments indirectly on court, or directly towards
players/officials/spectators/complex staff
Use of derogatory language based on gender, race or impairment will result in dismissal from the
competition
No spitting within the Complex whatsoever

All players/coaches will respect the direction of YMCA staff at all times
Responsibility

ALL Player/Coach/Manager/Spectators who fail to abide by Competition Rules will receive a team fine
of a minimum value of x1 game fee being deducted from the team’s deposit, and may face suspension
from participating in any competition and / or attending the Complex.
It is the responsibility of the captain/coach/manager to ensure players are signed in on the team sheet
prior to every game.

Player Insurance
Individual Registration fee (Insurance) – per player
ALL players must fill out the Individual Volleyball Player – Insurance Information Form by Week 1. Payments for
the registration fee must be made for competing in our competitions, and for insurance coverage. Players
playing netball twice a week will only be required to pay this once per season.
Senior Volleyball Player Registration = $25
Junior Volleyball Player Registration (14 years or younger ) = $17
** Registration Forms will be distributed to team captains around 1-2 weeks prior to the season starting so it can
be completed before coming to the centre on the first week.
Individual volleyball player insurance
All volleyball players registering in our competition will need to complete an Individual Volleyball Player
Insurance Information Form before taking the court for their first game.
The insurance fee is valid for the length of one season only. Each player needs to complete an
individual registration form at the start of each season before participating.
Please report all injuries and incidents to Centre staff so that an Incident Form can be completed.
Insurance is brokered by Arthur J Gallagher for Indoor Sports NSW.
Indoor Sports NSW has arranged this insurance program to provide benefits to those registered
participants of Indoor Sports NSW participating Centres who, through injury or accident, incur financial
loss and who would otherwise not have received assistance. The program seeks to provide benefits to
those most exposed and to maintain protection at the lowest possible cost. It therefore cannot provide
100% cover or a benefit for every loss that occurs. Federal Government Legislation prevents insurance
companies from paying any insurance benefit for a medical service that is covered by Medicare. This
legislation also applies to the Medicare gap. In addition to these policies all participants are encouraged
to take out Private Health Insurance.
The insurer for the Personal Accident Program is Arthur J Gallagher. Indoor Sports New South Wales –
