Founders Day and Annan Values Last Friday at Gathering we celebrated Annan’s birthday or “Founders Day”. As part of our celebration we sang a new school song and spent some time thinking about our core values. We shared some of the wonderful work going on around the school. Then children were shown large cards with the core values on them and asked what each one meant to them. We also talked about the principles behind Froebel’s forms of learning - Knowledge, Life, Beauty. The key values explored were: Creativity, Well-being, Relationships and Respect, Risk and Challenge and Community. The children were thoughtful and confident in sharing their thoughts and it developed into quite a moving experience. It is so heartening to know that even the very young children understand what makes Annan such a special place to go to school. We thought it would be helpful for parents to explore these over the next few weeks starting with ‘Creativity’. A recent episode of ‘Front Row’ on Radio 4 hosted a debate about Creativity in Schools called ‘Arts Education’. If you would like to listen to it you can find it as a podcast on the BBC Sounds app (broadcast on 14.11.18). There was also an article in the TES news this week entitled “What is Creativity and why does it matter?” Creativity for us at Annan is not about being good at art or making something, it is a skill which is central to children’s success in life. Art, drama, music, design are important but are really tools through which children can access creativity. At Annan we think of creativity as more to do with your thinking skills, ‘thinking outside the box’ is one of our favourite expressions. It is the ability to investigate, problem solve, and use your imagination. Through creative experiences children take an interest in the world around them and develop critical-thinking skills. The skills to innovate or inspire others is becoming vital in the workplace. It is suggested that with the growth of artificial intelligence up to 65% of children entering primary school today will end up working in completely new jobs that don’t yet exist. We need to be equipping our children to be creative, flexible and resilient risk takers. Now creative subjects are being squeezed out of mainstream school curriculums, music is disappearing from the KS3 secondary school timetables completely in some schools. Testing in primary schools is taking over as the purpose for learning and expressive arts and problem-solving skills are more difficult to test so can become less valued. We believe Annan is leading the way through its cutting-edge approach. Critical-thinking skills are developed through project-based learning such as we do at Annan. Children need to learn by making mistakes and trying again in occupations such as DT and woodwork as well as in Forest School or Science. These higher-level skills will allow them to grow in confidence to take risks in other subjects such as maths and literacy. Kate Latham, author of the TES article, (Head of learning and community engagement at the Jupiter Artland Foundation in Scotland) sums up the need for creativity with these words: “We need to make time for creativity because it is here that we build not only the curators, designers and filmmakers of the future, but also the most imaginative scientists, successful entrepreneurs and dynamic politicians.” Friday notes and reminders
