The school is full of the sights and sounds of spring. The eggs were in the incubator for 21 days and the students were thrilled to see 11 baby chicks hatch.

The plants in the greenhouse are also up. Students will have the opportunity to take their plants home to plant in their own gardens or plant them in the community garden with Carol from the library.

I hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful Spring Concert presented by the students. Our students have a great deal of talent. We also thank all our grandparents for coming and spending part of the afternoon with us during Grandparents’ Day. I would like to thank everyone for saving the Box Tops for Education (over $500 collected) and the SunnyD labels (3 classrooms received 20 books each). Also thank you for saving the pop tops for the Ronald McDonald Charities.

As of June 30, 2016, the Campbell Soup Labels for Education program will be discontinued. We thank you for saving the labels for our school. Much needed equipment for the Physical Education department was purchased with the labels. It’s been a great spring and school year and I look forward to seeing everyone next fall.

    Have a safe and relaxing

Thank you to Larry Titus, our

Spring is in the air! We are thankful for the abundant moisture we received these past few weeks. We love looking at the green grass and new buds coming on the trees. The Kindergarten students are anxiously awaiting their special day…KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 18th, at 2:00 in the high school gym with a reception following in the school cafeteria. The Kindergarten students have been reviewing many of their Kindergarten skills this last month. We tested our skills in April with our first NWEA Map Testing. These results will be shared in your child’s report card. They also are showing all the skills they learned in Kindergarten on their Final Kindergarten Assessment this week and on the AIMSweb Test that will be taken May 10-12. This test reviews fast letters, letter sounds, nonsense words, phoneme segmenting, fast numbers, counting to 100, larger quantity, and missing number. In reading we have two books left to read. We have read 37 decodable readers this year. Great reading, Kindergarten! We will celebrate our last five books with a Summer Olympics Celebration on May 17th. A water balloon toss, tug of war contest, treasure hunt, and football toss will be some of the fun. In April we walked to the Good Samaritan Center to play Bingo and sing a song for them.

We want to say THANK YOU to the first graders for reading to us the last few months. You are awesome readers! The Kindergarteners are also reading some of their decodable books to the

Head Start students. We will also have the opportunity to visit the first grade classroom on May 10th. We will read one of our stories to them and they will read one to us. We will get to see what the first grade room looks like and what it is like to sit at a first grade desk. Thanks to our third grade Kinder-Buddies for all their help this year. They helped us at recess time and dismissal time to get to our destinations. Thank you third graders and Mrs. Jen Greff! Congratulations to the 17 out of 20 students who made their goal each month of the Wildfire Reading Program. The students that completed their reading each month will travel to the movie theater on May 16th for a movie! Please help your child stay fresh with their academic skills over the summer. The last week of school the students will be given a Summer Fun Packet to complete over the summer. Please work with your child using this booklet and return on August 22nd for 10 prizes. It has been a fun and exciting year teaching your children. I appreciate all the parents’ help throughout the school year for class parties, reading to your child, helping them with homework, and being guest readers. Happy summer birthdays to Maddison Messer (May 30), Nickolai Erickson (May 30), Nathan Rafferty (May 31), Rebecca Miller (June 8) Charlotte Solley (June 14), and Eli Nasset (July 27).

FIRST GRADE Teacher: Mrs. Sherryl Friedt

    ([email protected])

NWEA testing went well. Our scores went up. We have finished our math, reading, science, and social studies books at this writing. The students have grown so much. I am so proud of all their accomplishments. THANK YOU students, parents, administration, fellow teachers, paras, cooks, custodians, bus drivers, and anyone else involved in our school year. It takes a village to raise and educate children they say.

  • Recently the first graders acted out short plays for their classmates. They had to make their masks and a few props. I've always said we had drama!

June birthdays are Iaunica Jordan, Ashlynn Swindler, Sampson Swindler, and Madeline Gonzalez. July birthdays are Michael Greff and Sophi Gonder. Zack Messmer and Chase LaJoie have August birthdays. Hope all of you have a very special birthday. It is critical that first graders read and write every day. Let the public library be your summer source of fun activities too. Students can also go to www.ixl.com to practice all that they learned in math this year. We hope everyone has a relaxing, fun, and safe summer.

It’s May and excitement is definitely in the air as we wrap up the last few weeks of the 2015-16 school year. Our caterpillars arrived last month and we enjoyed watching their life cycle. They spent the first week of their life in a plastic container in

our classroom eating and growing which is what caterpillars do best. Then, they attached themselves to the lid of the jar and hardened into

chrysalides where their transformation into butterflies began. We moved them into their butterfly habitat and last weekend they emerged as Painted Lady Butterflies. We enjoyed having them in our classroom for a few days and then set them free to enjoy their life in the great North Dakota outdoors.

We also had the opportunity to learn about the life cycle of plants this past month. Mott city librarian, Carol Kunnerup, visited our classroom and shared a book about seeds with us. After her visit, we planted watermelon seeds, most of which have sprouted. Thanks, Carol, for sharing your story and knowledge about seeds with us. A letter was sent home last month reminding students and parents how many book reports they needed to complete before the May 16th

movie. Please remember that all completed book reports for the year need to be turned in on or before Friday, May 13th. If you have any questions about the status of your child’s book reports, please contact me. We’d like to congratulate Ruby Nasset on becoming the Second Grade State Champion in the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Contest. We’d like to wish you the best of luck at the national competition.

I can’t believe we are already in May! Hoping the spring showers have been beneficial to everyone. Although our year is winding down, our schedule is as busy as ever! We had our last spelling test on April 22nd. We are reading the book Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World for reading class and completing a reading journal for language arts. All of the assignments that go along with the book are due May 12th. Math has us busy learning about different types of lines and quadrilaterals. We have also been learning about angles and how to use a protractor to measure them. I am very proud of how our Math Meet team did on April 29th! Team members were Kendra Auch, Matt Huether (alternate), Anna Nasset, Jazlyn Ottmar, and Kierra Wiesinger. Anna came in 5th overall out of the 44 fourth graders present! We have been discussing the values of respect and kindness in class. Please practice using these at home and remind your son/daughter to use them everywhere, not just in school. We are done with NDSA testing and will finish up NWEA testing on May 5th. We also have three quick tests to take for AIMSweb this month.

Congratulations to Jazlyn Ottmar for receiving an honorable mention in the North Dakota Farm Bureau’s “Jobs in Agriculture” Poster Contest!

Coming Up: Concert at Good Samaritan Center at 2 pm on May 9th; Field trip to Heritage Center and Eagles Park on May 12th; Café Concert Matinee on May 13th; Wildfire Bookworm Day on May 16th; Track and Field Day on May 19th; and Last Day of School is May 20th. Feel free to e-mail me at any time: [email protected] Have a great summer!

The calendar says May, and it leaves me wondering where this school year has gone. During April in reading, we worked on a non-fiction picture book about time and how the calendar came about. Currently, we are in the middle of a novel study on the book Frindle by Andrew Clements. Frindle is a realistic fiction book about a fifth grade boy who invents a new word for the word “pen”, and how he and a teacher go head-to-head over it. In both units, we have been working on summary skills, vocabulary skills, and comprehension skills. We have been digging deeper into the math concepts of: mean, median, mode, range, rotations, translations, reflections, and additional geometry. We will finish up the year with review worksheet packets that review concepts learned throughout the school year. We are learning about the settlement of the Wild West, big businesses, like Rockefeller Oil and Carnegie Steel, and the Industrial Revolution in social studies. In science we wrapped up a unit on electricity and have been working on Vocabulary Magic science vocabulary review. Vocabulary Magic helps bring science vocabulary words to life by having students match vocabulary words with pictures and definitions. They then watch a short video called a trailer to see if they got the right cards matched together. The students have really learned a lot and have enjoyed this collaboration activity. In April, Holly Praus of Sunrise Youth Bureau finished up her five year drug and alcohol unit called Protecting You, Protecting Me with the students. Holly started the unit with this class when they were in first grade and has met with them throughout the years. This year marked their final year of learning with Holly. On April 19th and 21st, we had area nurses come to the school to discuss puberty and the adolescent’s changing body in a program called “The Changing Program.” April wrapped up the volleyball season for the girls. They played several games and have seemed to enjoy learning all about volleyball. Fifth grade girls that were involved were: Sophie Johnson, Rylee Riedlinger, and Jenessa

    Zentner. Great job, girls!

Marlene Kouba came in in April on behalf of North Dakota Women Involved in Farm Economics (NDWIFE) to present the fifth grade students with their awards for writing essays about North Dakota commodities. Jack Manolovits won third place in the state, and we had two honorable mentions: Sophie Johnson and Gavin Musk. Congratulations to them on their writing. On April 29th, four 5th graders competed in the Math Meet which was held in the Mott/Regent High School gym. This year’s team was made up of Alex Doe, Drew Eikamp, Jesse Reich, and Jenessa Zentner. Our alternate was TJ Gaab. This year we had 3 of our 4 individuals place: Alex Doe 1st, Jesse Reich 2nd, and Drew Eikamp 5th. We also won Team Championship. They did an outstanding job. CONGRATULATIONS 5th Grade Math Meet Team!! Mrs. Olson is very proud of you and all your hard work and dedication. Important Date to Remember: All homework and Wildfire Bookworm reports are due by Friday, May 13th. May is a busy month full of activities both inside and outside the classroom as we close out the school year. The afternoon of May 9th, we will be taking the elementary spring concert to the Good Samaritan Center. On May 10th, we will be traveling to New England with the sixth grade for Farm Safety Day. The afternoon of May 13th, we will be attending the Café Concert put on by the high school music students. The Wildfire Bookworm movie reward is at the Playhouse Theatre the afternoon of May 16th. May 17th is our class field trip to the West River Community Center in Dickinson for a day of physical education. We will be heading home down the

  • Enchanted Highway and wrapping up our trip with a stop at the ice cream shop in Regent and a talk with Gary Greff about his sculptures. The afternoon of May 19th, a track and field day is being planned for grades 1 through 6. To wrap it all up, we will present awards for the school year the morning of May 20th. Celebrating birthdays in our classroom in May are Sophie Johnson on the 8th, Mrs. Olson on the 9th, Adam Kautzman on the 11th, James Augare on the 23rd. July birthdays are Gavin Musk on the 1st, Jesse Reich on the 2nd, Layne Kovar on the 4th, and Brayden Smith on the 14th. Cole Manolovits celebrates August 10th. Remember the last day of school is May 20th. Have a safe and fun summer! If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at any time: [email protected].

SIXTH GRADE Teacher: Mrs. Becky Qualls

    ([email protected])

April was a very busy month for our students. In language arts we continued working on vocabulary, comprehension, text analysis, and writing. We are also learning the Step Up to Writing program. Dr. Karyn Chiapella visited our elementary classrooms and was very impressed with the students' performance and enthusiasm. The students completed the North Dakota State Assessments then moved on to the NWEA testing. Their confidence and skills have grown by leaps and bounds. The sixth graders attended the Changing Program to learn how their bodies change as they become young adults. We were invited to attend the Speech Showcase to hear the junior high/high school students perform their state-qualifying speeches. Several sixth graders plan to join speech next year so this experience was inspiring for them.

Our class enjoyed a day in Regent for Eco Ed. New England joined us for a day of fun while learning about soils, wetlands, forests, conservation, and water quality. Thanks to Rachael Mayer and Stephanie Solley for chaperoning the trip. Many of the students have also been involved in track, volleyball, and Math Meet. We attended the TREES program and heard about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The students had the opportunity to see and touch various animal hides. Delanie Wiedrich, Miss North Dakota, visited our school and shared her experiences with bullying. She overcame that obstacle and has gone on to perform in the Medora musical, visit schools, and perform the other duties of Miss North Dakota. We really enjoyed Delanie's visit and having photos taken with her. A special thank you goes to Jill Anderson for making smoothies for our class. She started this annual tradition when her son Tanner was in Kindergarten. The students look forward to this treat every year. We have some fun things coming up in May. Our class is looking forward to Fitness Day at the Dickinson Rec Center on May 9th. The fifth and sixth graders will head to New England on May 10th to enjoy a day of Farm Safety activities. We will attend the Cafe Concert on May 13th. On May 16th, the students who have completed the Bookworm requirements will head to the theater for a movie and snacks. Our track and field day will be held on May 19th. The students look forward to the games and the cookout. On May 20th, our last day of school, we will have the awards ceremony to recognize the students for all their hard work. Madison Rafferty, Jearney Weyrauch, and MacKenzie Galloway celebrate May birthdays. Summer birthdays include Jaylyn Hauck, Alison Keator, Alaina Frey, Joe Geerts, Sydney Steiner, Ibrahim Watson-Buffalo, and Levi Wegh.

  • Parents, thank you for sharing your children with me this school year. This class is an amazing group and our time together has passed much too quickly. Have a blessed summer!!

TITLE 1 Teacher: Mrs. Brenda Meier

    ([email protected])

In Title 1 reading small groups, the students made a lot of progress using the Pathways to Reading program. The students are able to spot vowels sounds, which enables them to decode words more effectively. Have your child read over the summer months to retain the skills learned throughout the year. The Title 1 math small groups in grades three and four have focused on multiplication and division facts all year long. The students have made great progress throughout the year. Have your child practice these facts during the summer months. Looking ahead to summer, it is important for your child to continue reading during the summer months. Remember to check out our local library this summer and see what they have to offer. The following website provides a list of children’s books, by grade level, that can be found at most public libraries: http://www.neh.gov/projects/summertime-kto3.html For the younger grades, a great website to encourage your child to read is www.starfall.com/ Listed below are some websites that will help with practicing math facts. http://www.aplusmath.com/ http://www.allmath.com/ http://www.multiplication.com http://www.softschools.com http://xtramath.org Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Teacher: Ms. Michelle Koepplin ([email protected])

Wow! Where did the school year go? Day to day it may appear to pass slowly, but in reality the school year zooms by quickly. On April 29th, Mott/Regent had the privilege of hosting the 2016 Math Meet. Students in grades 4-8 did an excellent job representing our school. I had the opportunity to coach the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams. Team members worked very hard at practices to prepare. Sixth grade placed 4th as a team and Mia Gonzalez placed 6th as an individual. Seventh grade placed 1st as a team, and individually, Ryan Doe placed 1st. Eighth grade placed 2nd as a team and Emma Honeyman placed 3rd as an individual. All participants can be proud of the time and effort they put into preparing and competing at this year’s Math Meet. In addition to the Math Meet, many great gains and accomplishments have been made throughout the year. Watching students meet their goals or their faces light up when a new concept is grasped is priceless. These are the reasons we are in the wonderful profession called education. Thank you, parents, for sharing your child(ren) with us.

    MUSIC Teacher: Mrs. Annette Roth

    ([email protected])

Band: Does the end of a school year mean the learning is over for summer? I certainly hope not! Students with instruments should be practicing no less than 3 days a week for at least 20 minutes each session. This probably will not happen without the encouragement of a parent or grandparent. Help your child set goals: “I want to hit a high C on the trumpet.”; “I want to play the basic rudiments correctly on the snare.”; “I want to play this song I found on the Internet.” On my school website I will have links to sites with helpful information with demonstrations of proper playing. If anyone says, “I'm bored.”, help them find musical games and inspiration by looking there first. You can always email me with

  • any questions. To practice a steady beat this summer, jump rope and dribble basketballs! Do the activity to your favorite music or sing songs and chants we learned in school. Playing music with friends is also great motivation. Hey, students, start a summer band of your own! This month fourth graders will be receiving information on the band program for next fall. (Call or email any questions.) In music we are practicing counting rhythms in Grades 3-6 to prepare for our eighth note- sixteenth combinations (ti ti-ka). Grades K-2 have been moving to classical music of Strauss' Pizzicato Polka, reviewing material like dynamics, instrument technique, and expectations of respect and behavior. On May 9th the students will be at the Good Samaritan Center for a mini Spring Concert.

    ART Teacher: Mrs. Ruth Southerland

    ([email protected])

Several pieces of student artwork have been placed on display at the Good Samaritan Center to help celebrate National Nursing Home Week. The residents and staff have already expressed their excitement over having student artwork to brighten up their walls. The artwork will stay up over the summer and will be returned to the students at the beginning of school in August. Please be on the lookout for art portfolios that will be coming home in the next couple of weeks. Students will be creating these large folders to carry all of their artwork home. Thanks for a great year and enjoy the summer!
