WEEKLY WISDOM

The Old and the NewSession Two

The Bible is a treasure, a gift from God. Though there are many human authors, the Holy Spirit is the One who inspires the Scriptures, guarantees their truth and guides the Church to a correct understanding. Through the Bible, Divine meaning is revealed. The New Testament is concealed in the Old Testament and the Old Testament is revealed in the New Testament. Historical moments are used to foreshadow the fulfillment of God’s promises. In the

Exodus, Moses leads the Israelites, freeing them from slavery. In the New Testament, Christ delivers us from our own slavery of sin. This is just one example of the fulfillment. Typology is the study of God’s works in the Old Testament that prefigures what He accomplishes through Christ in the New Testament. The Bible study Genesis to Jesus will help will help us understand how God speaks to us through the Bible.

Join us on Sunday mornings or Monday evenings for this exciting journey through the Bible! ALL ARE WELCOME! Registration forms are available in the Commons or register online on the parish website.

It is Not Too Late to Join Us!

CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

ST. FRANCIS FEAST DAY CELEBRATIONS: Controlling the destruction of our important documents helps

to organize the redistribution of the residue in an ecologically responsible manner. Although this is small on the grand scale of ecological issues in our society, it is in keeping with the concerns of St. Francis for God’s creation as addressed by Pope Francis in Laudato Si. Every little bit we can do will help.

“St. Francis helps us to see that an integral ecology calls for openness to categories which transcend the language of mathematics and biology, and take us to the heart of what it is to be human. Just as happens when we fall in love with someone, whenever he would gaze at the sun, the moon or the smallest of animals, he burst into song, drawing all other creatures into his praise. He communed with all creation, even preaching to the flowers, inviting them “to praise the Lord, just as if they were endowed with reason.” His response to the world around him was so much more than intellectual appreciation or economic calculus, for to him each and every creature was someone united to him by bonds of affection. That is why he felt called to care for all that exists.”

• On Friday, October 4, there will be a Blessing of Animals at 6:30 p.m., here at Holy Family.

• There will be a Document Shredding Event here at church. Eggleston Services will provide secure bins for parishioners’ deposit of paper documents as in the past. We ask that deposits be limited to two bank boxes, and suggest they be accompanied by two cans of food for the Food Pantry. The bins will be available between October 4 and October 10.

• After the Masses on the weekend of October 5/6 there will be brochures about caring for our Earth.

FAREWELL PARTY FOR ALFIE: Come Celebrate Alfie Martinez-Coyle on Saturday, October 19, after the 5:30 p.m. Mass. Please sign up after Mass and let us know what dish-to-share that you would like to bring.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”

FEAST OF SAINT FRANCIS The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi is celebrated on October

4 each year. It commemorates the life of St. Francis, who was born in

the 12th century and is the Catholic Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment.

He is remembered for his love for animals and nature and his generosity to the poor and his willingness to minister to the lepers.

The Blessing of the Animals at Holy Family will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4.

One way we can try to emulate his teachings is to be aware of our impact on the earth. The best practice is to first reduce, then reuse and finally recycle.

The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for our school!

Over the summer, participating brands have begun to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label.

Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. The Box Tops for Education team has worked hard to build a NEW-and-improved, user-friendly Box Tops mobile app, available now.

The new app features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to our school's earnings online.

If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. Better yet, you can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning your store receipt containing participating products.

Thanks for helping our school get what it needs!

BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW APP OR UPDATE YOUR EXISTING APP:
