BANDON - Library lover and local artist Lois Olds has donated one of her original oil paintings, which will be raffled off at the Dec. 7 Holiday Book Sale at the Bandon Public Library, 1204 11th St. SW. The painting is currently on display at Bandon Library. Raffle tickets, $1 each or six for $5, are available at the library's checkout counter.

Olds' work has been on display at local galler-ies and other venues, and is privately collected. She recently was awarded her own show at the Art by the Sea Gallery. This will take place in January 2020.

Olds paints largely from photographs. Over the years, she has also taught oil painting classes

in many parts of the country and in varied set-tings, including schools, galleries and stores. Her classes are primarily landscape and seascape painting. She has owned an art supply store in Mendocino County, Calif.

Olds has been a lifelong advocate for the many benefits of creative expression and has seen many lives transformed through the process of self-discovery. She says that works of art outlive the artist.

Be sure to visit the library to view her paint-ing. Buying raffle tickets gives an opportunity to own a beautiful, original piece of art and support the library.

BANDON - The Ni-les’tun Unit parking area of Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge on North Bank Road will be closed through Oct. 2 to enable the removal of the existing observation deck and the construction of a new concrete over-look. The main access point to the marsh trail from the parking lot will also be closed. To gain information about alternatives to access the marsh contact the refuge manager Kate Iaquinto at 541-347-1470.

Once construction is complete, visitors will again be able to access the parking area and Marsh trail, according to a press release from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Newport. In the coming year, the refuge also plans to improve the

native plantings along the trail. Parking and access to this site will remain free.

The Ni-les’tun Unit of Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge is the largest tidal marsh restora-tion in Oregon. This project restored more than 400 acres of habitat in the estuary and created important habitat for young salmon and shore-birds. The construction of a new concrete over-look will improve the quality of public access to this unit of the refuge, including access to hunting and fishing opportunities.

For more information on the work and the people who make it happen, visit https://www.fws.gov/refuge/bandon_marsh/.

BANDON - Everyone is invited to the Bandon Public Library at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, for a look into Oregon history.

Mel Magers, an award winning docent of the Oregon State Parks' Kam Wah Chung Heritage Site, will share photos and historical knowledge of this site that preserves the early Chinese culture in John Day.

The Kam Wah Chung & Co. Museum con-tains a well-stocked apothecary and one of the most extensive collections of materials from the century-long influx of Chinese immigrants in the American West. It was listed on the National

Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior in 2005.

In the last half of the 19th century, lured by the need for labor in the mining and railroad industries, thousands of young men came to the United States to escape the poverty of their home-land caused by war and famine.

Ing "Doc" Hay and Lung On, two young Cantonese men, both in their mid-20s, bought a one-story trading post and the following year opened Kam Wah Chung and Company as a gen-eral store and medical clinic.

BANDON - Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, after skin cancer, with one in nine men being diagnosed at some point in their lives.

According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that this year alone there will be 174,650 new cases and about 31,620 deaths caused by prostate cancer.

While prostate cancer is a very serious dis-ease, it has also become very survivable. The key is early detection. If you are over the age of 50

(earlier if you have a family history) it is time to start discussing routine prostate cancer screenings with your primary care provider.

During the month of September, Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center wants to help people take charge of their health and is offering free PSA testing with an order from your primary care provider.

For more information call Southern Coos Hospital at 541-347-2426.
