BANDON -- Have you ever wanted to learn country line dances? Or maybe you know a few and have been looking for a place to dance? The floor at Lloyd’s is “amazing,” according to teacher Pat Mitchell.

Lessons are free, easy and fun. They are held at

“Put on your dancing shoes and meet us at Lloyd’s, 219 Second St. in Old Town, Bandon,” said Mitchell.

COQUILLE — The third annual Bear Cupboard coat, tarp, sheet, towel and sock drive for the needy and homeless is underway.

Donations can be picked up by Sally McSherry by calling 541-347-9130 or can be delivered to Jefferson School in Coquille on Mondays and Tuesdays.

In 2018 Bear Cupboard served 2,117 families rep-resenting 6,328 individuals in the Coquille and Bandon areas. This amounted to 115,796 pounds of food and countless items of clothing, according to organizers.

"We are the only food bank in the Coquille area that provides grocery style boxes full of dry, refrigerat-ed and frozen food on a monthly basis as well as fresh produce, bread and pastries on a weekly basis," McSherry said. "Clothing is also available for the whole family every week. Please help us keep our citizens warm and dry this winter."

Those who need a special pick-up in Coquille can contact Gina at 541-297-0941.

BANDON — The next Bandon Showcase offers some-thing never before seen on a local stage, featuring an adven-ture tale told through heart-stopping aerial routines and amazing acrobatics.

“Aureum” From Halcyon Shows will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW in Bandon.

Aureum combines the elements of theatrical storytell-ing and characters with world-class acrobatics and aerial movement. These elements, with an incredible original soundtrack and high flying technical elements, are usually only possible in stadiums. A time traveler meets the beautiful and benevolent White Queen of Aureum — a defender of nature's power. Through the sorcery of the Red Empress, a gathering of dark

powers threatens the tranquil world of Aureum, and its inhabitants must find a way to protect it at all costs.

"This is sure to be an unforgettable experience for the whole family," said Bandon Showcase president MaryAnn Soukup.

The show will also feature an outreach for local youth. In addition, the Bandon Rotary Club is holding a food drive for Bandon Feeds the Hungry. Everyone attending who brings non-perishable items will receive a raffle ticket for prizes to be given away.

BANDON — "The Death of Socrates and the Birth of Political Philosophy" is the topic of a free discussion at 3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Bandon Public Library's Sprague Room.

This introductory class explores basic themes of politi-cal philosophy through the writings of Plato. Audience members will be introduced to a conflicted Socrates, Plato's teacher. Through a close reading of the short dialogue "Crito" participants will explore fundamental political ques-tions about the nature of law, loyalty, civil disobedience and the conflict that arises when ideals of justice clash with the authority of the state.

What is the merit of governance? Are there times you've thought the law is so bad maybe it should be broken,

as has been the case with luminary figures, such as Thoreau, Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. How might that look? What would be lost?

Socrates, the wisest ancient philosopher, asks us to consider these tough questions as those present embark on a civil discussion of politics stripped of the headlines from cable news. Participants should feel encouraged to bring to bat their own contemporary experiences.

This discussion is led by Dr. Jason Kropsky who holds a Ph.D. in political science and has resided in Oregon for the past four years. Prior to moving west, he taught courses in political theory, American government and international criminal justice.

Organizers ask community members to donate a new, unwrapped toy or non-perishable food items at any of the collection sites prior to or during the event. On Dec. 7, a First Student bus will be located at the Coos Bay and North Bend Bi-Mart stores and at the Coquille McKay's Market, and a Bandon School District bus in Bandon will be parked in front of US Cellular in the Bandon Shopping Center.

The 18th annual Bus Jam Toy and Food Drive serves families in need during the holidays. Food col-lected is distributed through South Coast Food Share to all food cupboards in the county, and a special distribu-tion is also included in the city of Lakeside. Since Bus Jam began, almost 320,000 pounds of food have been distributed to families in need through Coos County food pantries.

Monetary donations are also welcome. The dollars donated are leveraged by allowing the food assistance programs to purchase food in bulk.

And, more than 7,400 children have received a gift through Bus Jam. Toys will be distributed at the Bus Jam Distribution on Saturday, Dec. 14. Families that meet income levels and need will be able to register soon for the distribution.

Early donation drop sites are in Lakeside, North Bend, Coos Bay, Bandon, Coquille and Myrtle Point. The drop location sites are listed at https://kdcq.com/rotary-bus-jam/. Several stores are offering Bus Jam specials, also listed on the website. Bykes For Tykes joined forces with Bus Jam this year.

Those who don't want to shop can make out a check to the Rotary Coos Foundation.

Bus Jam is made possible through a partnership of local Rotary clubs, the Oregon Department of Human Services, South Coast Food Share, SWOCC, Bi-Mart, Bandon U.S. Cellular, First Student Bus Company, the Bandon School District, Bykes For Tykes, and K-DOCK Radio. For more information, visit www.loadthebus.com.

Registration for the Rotary Toy Distribution is also underway at this time. Qualifying families need not be receiving state assistance, they only need to meet fed-eral poverty levels based on family size. Bus Jam is designed to reach families who are making it, but strug-gling to pay all their bills and still have some left for Christmas. Income verification and proof that children reside in the home is required at the event.
