Modern American Conflicts

MODERN AMERICAN CONFLICTS

THE KOREAN WARMODERN AMERICAN CONFLICTS

THE KOREAN WARWithout warning, ferocious combat erupted in the summer of 1950. A hostile North Korea was invading South Korea. Some people feared that it signaled the start of World War III.

President Harry S. Truman quickly sent American soldiers to assist the beleaguered South Koreans. His fateful decision embroiled America in a vicious and controversial war. Other countries offered to help too, and troops from nearly two dozen nations banded together to stop the invasion.

A brilliant but risky maneuver by US General Douglas MacArthur surprised the invaders and sent them scurrying for home. Yet the fighting was far from over. Chinese forces unexpectedly entered the battle in support of North Korea. As the world watched with concern, the conflict in Korea escalated. Clearly, this war was different from those that came before it. Its repercussions can be still felt today.

Jim Corrigan has authored numerous history books for students and adults. His previous works include The Civil War in the West (2003), Causes of World War II (2005), and The 48th Pennsylvania in the Battle of the Crater: A Regiment of Coal Miners Who Tunneled Under the Enemy (2006). In addi-tion to historical events, Corrigan has also written about life in foreign countries and profiled key figures from the past, such as British mathema-tician and codebreaker Alan Turing. A full-time author and journalist, Jim Corrigan resides near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Connie.

The Biography of Numbers

0The Sumerians and Mayans flirted with zero, but failed to find it. The Greeks feared it as representing a great nothingness, a void, while the Roman Catholic Church condemned it as the work of the devil. The History of Numbers: Zero traces how zero grew from a harmless placeholder to an idea that shook the intellectual and religious life of the European and Islamic worlds—and changed not only how humanity worked with numbers, but how we came to view the universe.

Kevin Cunningham is the author of more than thirty books, including biographies of Joseph Stalin and J. Edgar Hoover and a four-part series on diseases in history.

The Military Experience:

In the Air

Always a trendsetter, the United States military has steadily changed the face of warfare in recent years through its use of drones. These unmanned flying craft have been around for close to a century. But only for a bit more than a decade have they been able to carry missiles capable of obliterating a large building. These small but lethal planes can now fly at altitudes of several miles and often approach their targets without being seen or heard. Moreover, “pilots” stationed in secret bases thousands of miles away, guide them with almost pinpoint accuracy. So far, the targets have mostly been terrorists who have vowed to do America harm. But a great deal of controversy surrounds the use of military drones. Many people do not want them to be used against U.S. citizens, for example. This volume touches on this and the other hot buttons related to these new weapons for a new world.

Award-winning historian and writer Don Nardo has published hundreds of books for young people. Among them are numerous studies of military history, including examinations of the events, leaders, fighters, and weapons of most of America’s wars. Mr. Nardo lives with his wife, Christine, in Massachusetts.

Playwright Arthur Miller tackled mighty themes: human beings’ duty to one another, a father’s dreams for his sons, the meaning of success. Miller spent a long career exploring “the heart and spirit of the average man.” Decades after they were written, plays like Death of a Salesman and All My Sons continue to move audiences at home and abroad.

Miller also spoke out courageously for what he believed was right. During the “red scare” of the 1950s, when citizens were being called before Congress to defend their patriotism, he wrote The Crucible. Based on the Salem witch trials of the 1600s, this play delves into the dangers of false accusations and mass hysteria. Miller protested when he thought his country went wrongly to war, and he fought for the freedom of writers in other lands whose voices were being silenced. He believed it was a writer’s responsibility “to reach out to the whole world.”

Catherine Reef has written more than forty books for children and adults, including many biographies. She has received the Sydney Taylor Award and the Joan G. Sugarman Children’s Book Award as well as Golden Kite and Jefferson Cup Honors. A graduate of Washington State University, she lives in College Park, Maryland, with her husband, a photographer, and their dog, an Italian greyhound.

Civil Rights Leaders

How should black Americans battle racial injustice? “By any means necessary,” Malcolm X declared.

In the early 1960s, Malcolm X was arguably the most controversial man in America. While other civil rights leaders were careful not to alienate the white establishment, Malcolm spoke without restraint. For centuries, he exclaimed, “the white man has had his foot-long knife in the black man’s back.” For Malcolm, the modest gains of the civil rights movement were not enough. “An integrated cup of coffee,” he said, “isn’t sufficient pay for four hundred years of slave labor.”

Tall and charismatic, Malcolm inspired millions of black Americans with his pow-erful speeches and, after his death in 1965, his highly acclaimed autobiography. Even a young Barack Obama was enamored by the “blunt poetry of his words, his unadorned insistence on respect.”

As a child, Malcolm endured racial horrors that destroyed his family. He fell into a life of crime and drugs, was transformed by the Nation of Islam, and later came to the realization—before he was murdered—that good lay in all of the world’s people regardless of their race. This book recounts the details of a remarkable man’s extraordinary life.

Ernest Rutherford was born on a farm in New Zealand in the late 1800s. The fourth of twelve children, he won a scholarship to study at university, and began to excel at science. In 1895 he left New Zealand to study at the famous Cavendish Laboratory in England. There, the head of the Cavendish Laboratory, J. J. Thomson, recognized Ruth-erford’s potential, enthusiasm, and fresh approach and invited him to work with him. At the age of twenty-seven, Rutherford left England to accept a professorship in the physics department at McGill Univer-sity in Canada. In Montreal he discovered radon, a radioactive gas, and also found that some heavy atoms break down into lighter ones.

Rutherford returned to Manchester, England, and soon after was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the chemistry of radioactive materials and the transmutation of elements. A pioneer of modern atomic science, Rutherford laid the foundation for the world of sub-atomic particles that are studied today.

John Dalton grew up in a poor Quaker family in England in the early 1800s. At age twelve he became a schoolteacher, and he taught for the rest of his life. Through the influence of friends, he became inter-ested in science and began taking daily weather readings, studying the aurora borealis, and hypothesizing its source. He also investigated the condition of color-blindness after realizing that his eyesight was not like that of other people. He even requested that his eyeballs be exam-ined after his death to find a cause.

Dalton’s most influential theory defined the atom as the characteristic particle of matter and established chemistry as an exact science. He drew up atomic weights and described the way that atoms combine to form molecules. Despite his lack of formal education, his insights led him to the Atomic Theory, which focused chemists on atoms and led others to discoveries in the field of chemistry.

In 1950, seven-year-old Linda Brown of Topeka, Kansas, had to leave at 7:40 each morning to get to Monroe School by 9:00. Part of her commute required a walk through a railroad switching yard. Linda didn’t understand why she had to make this long, dangerous commute when the Sumner Elementary School was only six blocks away. “My mother explained that it was because of the color of our skin,” Linda said.

“As a child, I did not comprehend what difference that could possibly make.”

In the South and other parts of the country, black students were required to attend “colored” schools. Black attorney Thurgood Marshall understood the disadvantages black students suffered due to segregated education. Not only were colored schools woefully underfunded, black students developed feelings of inferiority.

For years, Marshall and other civil rights lawyers fought to abolish what had been called “separate but equal” schooling. In 1954, they achieved their dream. In a decision that rocked the South, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were unconstitutional. “We hit the jackpot!” Marshall declared.

Brown v. Board of Education explores the details of one of the most important Supreme Court decisions of all time. The book takes you from Marshall’s dangerous fact-finding mission in 1933 to the turbulent aftermath of Brown, when white Southerners doggedly resisted the decision—sometimes with dynamite.

In a 1963 Gallup poll, Americans listed civil rights as the most important crisis fac-ing the nation. That May in segregated Birmingham, Alabama, firefighters blasted black marchers with powerful fire hoses. Millions of Americans were becoming out-raged at such events, and so too was President John F. Kennedy.

That June the Kennedy Administration worked on a civil rights bill, and Kennedy himself would urge Congress to pass it. However, Martin Luther King Jr. knew that southern politicians would do all they could to block such legislation. King told his advisers that “something dramatic must be done” to support the civil rights bill be-cause “I don’t think it will pass otherwise.”

That “something” would be the March on Washington. Black labor leader A. Philip Randolph, seventy-four, had dreamed of such a march for decades. On August 28, it came to fruition, with 250,000 civil rights supporters descending on the nation’s capital. King, the last of the many speakers that day, delivered his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech.

This book recounts King’s ascent to the proverbial “mountaintop” as well as the details of that historic event in Washington. Who made it happen? How did the marchers get through the muggy afternoon? What was their reaction to King’s speech? All of these issues, and more, are explored in Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1963 March on Washington.

WORLDHISTORY

For a long time, the story of human civilization began with the organized societies in Mesopotamia and Egypt. But new archaeological research has altered our ideas about the ancient world. The boundaries of what we call “early civilization” now stretch far to the east.

In the valley of the Indus River, the Harappan civilization built a network of pre-planned brick cities connected by roads and involved in trade with distant lands. The arrival of a mysterious horse people known as the Arya ushered in a new age in technology and culture. Their writings underlay a religious faith and social system that still exists today. Over time, Indians developed a dizzying array of languages and used it to add epic poetry, myth, and new expressions of faith to our world heritage. Throughout the vast Indian subcontinent, people speaking hundreds of languages refined mathematics and invented chess, mined diamonds and forged rare steel, practiced surgery and diagnosed diseases, and cultivated valuable plants—from cinnamon to sugarcane to pepper—that transformed world trade and brought European conquerors eager to profit from India’s wealth.

Born into poverty in Augusta, Georgia during the 1930s, James Brown was determined to rise above his circumstances. With little parental care and no more than a seventh grade education, Brown found his true calling in music. At first Brown sang the gospel that he had learned in church as a boy, but later he joined a vocal group called the Avons that sang R&B. Eventually Brown struck out on his own, creating one of the most dynamic live shows in American during the 1960s and creating a body of work that continues to influence rap and hip-hop.

From his involvement in the civil rights movement during the 1960s to his tour of Vietnam in 1968, Brown was committed to making a better world. His climb to success, however, was never easy, and even as one of the most successful entertainers in America, Brown often lived a turbulent life. Over the course of his lifetime, he would be arrested multiple times and even serve time in prison.

Proud: The Story of James Brown follows the artistic peaks and personal tragedies of one of the most important and influential musical voices of the contemporary era. Through a career that extended for fifty years, James Brown left a legacy that continues to impact popular music today.

Ancient peoples measured out distances with forearms and feet. Modern peoples use precise standards weighed against natural processes like the speed of light. In the thousands of years in between, human beings invented cubits and furlongs and liters—in fact, an astonishing variety of units—to measure the physical world. In The Biography of Numbers: Measurement, emperors and revolutionaries, scientists and founding fathers try and fail to impose orderly standards, yet in their own ways contribute to the realization of the dream of a single, worldwide system of measurement.

Ever since primitive airplanes started dropping bombs during World War I, the United States has been a leader in bomber tech-nology. Later, during World War II, American industry turned out thousands of bombers of various types. One of that conflict’s true workhorses was the B-29. It took part in dramatic bombing raids that helped to bring Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan to their knees. And it was a U.S. B-29 called the Enola Gay that unleashed the first atomic bomb on Japan, ending the war in the Pacific. In the decades that followed, American bombers became increasing sophisticated. Today, the country has some that fly at supersonic speeds. Others are invisible to enemy radar. In a world that remains dangerous and uncertain, these amazing and lethal flying weapons stand ready. They can and will go anywhere and do whatever is nec-essary to defend American liberty and interests.

Award-winning historian and writer Don Nardo has published hundreds of books for young people. Among them are numerous studies of military history, including examinations of the events, leaders, fighters, and weapons of most of America’s wars. The concept of the helicopter dates back thousands of years. But actual workable helicopters did not appear until the twentieth century. Military experts immediately recognized their potential for use in warfare. Today, U.S. military helicopters are used for both attacking enemies and rescuing American soldiers. In certain situations, they have proven superior to airplanes. This is because helicopters can fly extremely close to the ground, speed up or slow down almost at a moment’s notice, and hit chosen targets with great accuracy. In addition, military helicopters can take off and land vertically, unlike planes, which require lengthy runways. As either very effective weapons or rescue vehicles, modern helicopters are frequently the flying machines of choice around the world.

Nearly every national military in the world has at least some kind of missile system. And a few have dozens of types of missiles. One common type is called an air-to-surface missile because it is fired from an aircraft and hits a target on either the ground or ocean. There are also surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and air-to-air missiles. Whatever kind it may be, a modern missile is an extremely dangerous and effective weapon. For one thing, it travels alarmingly fast. That makes it very difficult to shoot down. Also, missiles can and often do carry large amounts of explosive materials. Some even carry nuclear warheads. It is no wonder that scientists are constantly looking for ways to counter missile technology, which revolutionized warfare in the past century.

They prowl the skies in search of prey, striking instantly and without warning. They are the F-15 Eagle, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the F/A-18 Hornet, and America’s newest fighter jet, the F-22 Raptor. Advanced multi-role fighters represent the cutting edge of modern warfare. They are the first into battle, shooting down enemy aircraft, knocking out tanks and missile sites, and defending ground troops under fire. Only the best pilots get to fly them, elite aviators who can handle their extreme mental and physical demands. For more than half a century, fighter jets have symbolized the apex of military power.

Jim Corrigan has authored dozens of books for young adults, as well as a regimental history for Civil War enthusiasts. The U.S. military has several groups of very intensively trained individuals who carry out missions that are too difficult for ordinary soldiers and sailors. These Special Operations Forces are often called “special ops” for short. This ongoing series takes a look at what these special ops fighters do, how they train, the weapons they use, and much more.

Often U.S. military forces require as much information about the enemy as they can get. That way they can avoid walking into a trap or experiencing other surprises that might spell the difference between life and death or between victory and defeat. To that end, the military maintains a number of small units whose members are elite fighters highly trained in spe-cial reconnaissance (or “special recon” for short)-- gather-ing information about opposing forces, quite often behind enemy lines. The Marines, Navy, Army, and Air Force all have their own special recon teams, each of which has dis-tinguished itself in action, in the process saving numerous American lives.

Award-winning historian and writer Don Nardo has pub-lished hundreds of books for young people. Among them are numerous studies of military history, including exami-nations of the events, leaders, fighters, and weapons of most of America’s wars. The United States has a long history of launching amphibious, or sea-going, assaults on enemy beaches, including the famous D-Day Invasion in World War II. In addition to such large-scale operations, in recent decades the military has developed and unleashed smaller-scale operations carried out by units of spe-cial operations forces. These include raids on enemy ships and naval and other key military installations. Among the comman-dos who perform these dangerous missions are the famous Navy SEALs, and the less familiar but no less tough and talent-ed SWCCs (Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen). All of them are trained not only to fight fiercely but also to survive indefinitely when stranded at sea.

The U.S. military has several special ops units, groups of spe-cially, very intensively trained individuals who carry out mis-sions that are too difficult for ordinary soldiers and sailors. All of these commandos are trained to fight and to survive in ex-treme situations and environments. But some of them are also trained to rescue their fellow commandos, and civilians too, who are in trouble. These rescuers, including the Air Force’s pararescuemen, or PJs, are among America’s most multitalent-ed military personnel. Each year they save the lives of hun-dreds of people who become wounded in battle, crash in air-planes or helicopters, or become lost at sea or trapped behind enemy lines. Dedicated, courageous, and professional, the spe-cial ops rescuers risk their own lives without hesitation, living up to their inspiring motto— “that others may live.”

Among others, the elite warriors of the U.S. military include the Army’s Rangers, the Marines’ Force Recon, the Navy’s SEALs, and the Air Force’s Combat Control Technicians. Each of these groups has its own select units of snipers. Trained to operate as individuals, these highly skilled, lethal marks-men are able to blend with and seemingly disappear into practically any setting. From their hiding places, U.S. snipers pick off enemy fighters one by one, sending ripples of fear through the opposing ranks.

Many American soldiers learn to parachute from airplanes, making them paratroopers. But none have as many other vital combat and survival skills as the fighters in the elite units called "special ops," short for special operations. The Air Force's pararescue jumpers, or PJs, and Combat Con-trollers, the CCTs, are among the finest paratroopers in the world. The Navy's SEALs, the Army's Green Berets, and other special ops fighters also use their parachutes when neces-sary. Sometimes they jump behind enemy lines. Other mis-sions have called for them to parachute into a wide variety of dangerous situations. In both wartime and peacetime, the special ops paratroopers are always ready to leap into action.

In late 2010, Burma’s leading pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, walked free after seven continuous years of house arrest imposed by Burma’s military rulers. Thousands of Burmese turned out to greet “The Lady,” as she is affectionately known in Burma. “We haven’t seen each other for so long,” Suu Kyi told the jubilant crowd,

“I have so much to tell you.” Indeed. Burma’s most popular politician and most vocal critic of the Burmese military had been out of sight, and off limits, to the Burmese peo-ple and the world for almost fifteen of the past twenty-one years.

Burma (also known as Myanmar) has a long and tortured history, and Aung San Suu Kyi’s early adult years gave no clue that she would become an iconic hero in Burma’s democratic resistance to military rule. Suu Kyi’s famous father had led the fight for Burma’s independence in 1947. General Aung San expected to assume the leadership of Burma after the British granted the country its independence in 1948. However, he was assassinated. Suu Kyi was only two years old at the time, but her father’s dream of a unified, democratic Burma cast a long shadow on her life. In 1962, a military gen-eral seized power and closed the door of Burma to the outside world. Suu Kyi was out of the country, living overseas in India, the U.S., Japan, Bhutan, and finally England, with her British husband and two sons. But in the summer of 1988, she returned to care for her dying mother. It was then that Suu Kyi unexpectedly got caught up in the biggest uprising in Burma’s modern history. Burmese students and Buddhist monks poured into the streets to peacefully protest actions by the military junta—only to be gunned down by the hundreds by soldiers.

Suu Kyi has not set foot outside Burma since that fateful time in 1988. Knowing that the military regime will not allow her to return if she leaves, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate has remained in Burma, enduring extreme isolation, the threat of death, and personal pain and sacrifice, including the chance to see her dying husband one last time. Despite it all, “The Lady” has not backed down. She remains as determined as ever to see Burma emerge from its isolation and join the family of democratic nations in the world. “Freedom and democracy,” she believes, “are dreams you never give up.”

On February 11, 1990, South Africa’s Nelson Mandela walked free after spending twenty-seven and a half years in prison—more than a third of his adult life. A deliri-ous throng of well-wishers, numbering more than 100,000, greeted him in Cape Town with chants of “Viva Mandela,” to which Mandela responded with a clenched-fist salute and an address that began with thanks to “friends, comrades, and fellow South Africans” for their “tireless and heroic sacrifices.” Ordinary black South Africans had not heard the voice of their anti-apartheid hero, or even seen what he looked like, in a generation. Release of “the prisoner of the century” captured headlines around the world. The seventy-one-year-old Mandela had been sentenced to life in prison on June 12, 1964, for conspiracy to overthrow the government of South Africa and its policies of white supremacy, known as apartheid. In apartheid South Africa, blacks had no rights: they could not vote, own land, move freely from one place to another, or live in “white” areas; and black children attended schools grossly inferior to those for whites. Initially, Mandela had tried peaceful means to attain equal rights for South Africa’s black majority, advocating civil resistance, speaking out, organizing strikes and rallies. However, when the government did not reform, but responded with vio-lence by killing women and children, Mandela and other leading activists turned to armed struggle, carrying out sabotage against non-human targets such as power stations and government buildings. This was all a far cry from Mandela’s humble beginnings as a herdboy in a small village. As a boy, he was often not sure of himself. He cared little for the outside world and rarely challenged authority. But when he grew up, Mandela bravely devoted his life to the cherished ideal of “a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportunities.” Four years after Mandela’s release from prison, that cherished ideal began to take shape, when he became the first president of a democratic South Africa, serving as a symbol of peace, unity, and change, even in the face of enormously difficult social and economic challenges. A democratic South Africa is one of the twentieth century’s greatest achievements, and its native son, Nelson Mandela, is one of the world’s most beloved statesmen.

Mohandas GandhiMohandas GandhiIn 1893, a London-trained lawyer named Mohandas K. Gandhi left his native India to handle a legal matter for two Indian merchants in South Africa. Soon after his arrival, he was thrown off a train for refusing to leave a “whites only” compartment. Skeleton-thin and painfully shy, Gandhi spent a bitter cold night in the railway station wondering whether he should stay in South Africa or return to India. By morning he decided to stay and to resist the racial laws of South Africa. The train incident sparked a political awakening in Gandhi, and he would later describe the experience as “the most important factor” in directing his future political life. Gandhi remained in South Africa for twenty-one years, and during this time he became active in politics and began formulating his ideas on nonviolence resis-tance as a means to bring about political and social reform. At age forty-six, he returned to India, then a country of 500 hundred million people, two-thirds of which were ruled directly by the British. Back in his homeland, Gandhi expanded on the strategies he had developed in South Africa and used them to help bring an end to British rule in India. Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by a Hindu militant who con-sidered him too tolerant of Muslims, and he has become the dominant symbol of nonviolence resistance. His philosophy is credited with inspiring civil rights movements around the globe, including those led by Nobel Peace Prize winners Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, Tibet’s Dalai Lama, Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi, and President Barack Obama, who describes Gandhi as “a hero not just to India, but to the world.”

WORLDHISTORY

In a sense, medieval Europe was the bridge that led from the ancient world to the modern one. Indeed, the earliest medieval societies and kingdoms arose atop the wreckage of the western Roman Empire, which had collapsed in the fifth and sixth centu-ries, bringing the ancient era to a close. Some Roman traditions, ideas, and institutions, especially the Roman Catholic Church, survived and remained strong influences on European life and customs. In time, several of the medieval kingdoms grew into the leading European nation-states that are familiar today. The kings and nobles of those nations erected large stone castles, which sometimes came under siege, necessitating the use of a wide range of defensive and offensive military tactics. Meanwhile, Europe became increasingly aware of the wider world surrounding it. On the one hand this led to the Crusades—bloody wars with the Muslims in charge of the Holy Land in Palestine. On the other, ancient Greek ideas, which had been preserved by those Muslims, transformed European thought, leading to the tremendous out-pouring of intellectual and artistic achievement known as the Renaissance. The final steps across the medieval bridge to mod-ern times were taken when Europeans began to venture out and explore the globe, a venture destined to give them power over diverse lands and peoples.

Historian Don Nardo has written more than a hundred books about ancient and medieval times, including volumes on historical events, warfare, and everyday life in those eras. He also composes and arranges orchestral music.

A deeper understanding of these well-known writers.

“Sapet traces Collins’s career as a television script writer and author of children’s books . . . Emphasis is placed on Collins’s rationale for writing a story in which children engage in war and the need for young people to understand and discuss the serious issues that are raised in [The Hunger Games].”

Kerrily Sapet

Suzanne Collins’s best-selling book The Hunger Games was born from reality television shows, newscasts, and a childhood steeped in stories about war. Her dark tale about children forced to battle to the death captivated readers around the world. With more than 36 million copies of The Hunger Games trilogy in print and a smash hit movie version, Collins has written one of the most popular young adult series in history.

The wartime themes echoing throughout The Hunger Games, and Collins’s other best-selling series, The Underland Chronicles, have roots in Collins’s upbringing. The daughter of a career officer in the U.S. Air Force, Collins knew from a young age that war shaped her family’s fate. At every turn, Collins’s father seized the opportunity to teach her about military history, politics, and economics. As an adult, she shaped these lessons into books for young adults about war and violence.

Collins tells tales of bravery and love at the worst of times. Her books carry a strong antiviolence message—one she hopes will spur her readers to consider their world and the role they play in it.

Kerrily Sapet has worked as a journalist and a special education teacher. She has written numerous books for Morgan Reynolds, including biographies of Jimmy Choo, Google’s founders, Elizabeth I, and four titles in the Political Profiles series.

Jeremy Lin reached his dream by never giving up. Encouraged by his father to play basketball, he developed a passion for the game at a young age, doing everything he could think of to become great, including drink-ing milk “to become really tall.”

As a point guard, Jeremy led his high school team to the California state title—only to encounter his first barrier. No college recruiters offered him a scholarship. Being of Asian decent, he was stereotyped as smart but lack-ing in pure basketball ability. Indeed, Jeremy was bright, graduating with a 4.2 grade-point average, but he craved a future in basketball.

Jeremy enrolled at Harvard University and played point guard against Ivy League competition, encountering racial insults at every arena. Experiencing a spiritual growth, he leaned on his faith to help him cope. By his senior year, he was setting school and league records. Being skipped over in the NBA draft left him in tears.

Jeremy remained steadfast, and when he joined the Golden State Warriors as a walk-on, he became the first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese decent to play in the NBA. He sat mostly at the end of the bench, and then was waived after one season. He was claimed by the Houston Rockets—then waived again. Claimed once more by the New York Knicks, he sat on the bench until a rash of injuries forced the coaches to play him in a desperate act. He was an instant star. He hit game-winning shots, set scoring records, and became an overnight sensation dubbed Linsanity. But would it last?

Brock Lesnar is a mighty man. Raised on a farm, he wrestled at a young age and was expected by his parents to win every match. He grew large by lifting hay bales and makeshift weights, and he devel-oped an aggressive attitude that made him a high school star. But his poor effort in the classroom left him with few options.

Brock joined the National Guard but was disqualified for his color-blindness and inability to type, so he resumed wrestling in junior college with enough success to be recruited by the University of Minnesota. He flourished with the Gophers to become a collegiate national champion.

Tired of being poor, Brock joined the World Wrestling Federation (later called World Wrestling Entertainment), and before long he was the WWE heavyweight champion and a millionaire. But life on the road was too much for Brock, and he hated the fake competition of pro wrestling, so he quit.

After a failed attempt at pro football, Brock tried his hand at mixed martial arts. After four fights, he was the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion. Brock was called “The Baddest Dude on the Planet. ”He seemed indestructible. All at once, he was knocked off his feet by a severe intestinal disorder. Brock suddenly found himself in a fight for his life.

Mark Zuckerberg forever changed the way people relate to one another when he launched a computer program he called TheFacebook while a sophomore at Harvard University. What started out as a way for students at a few different colleges to connect with one another and share information turned into the tool of the twenty-first cen-tury that defines how more than half a billion people interact with one another and share personal information. Even as a child Mark demonstrated his extraordinary ability to sit at a keyboard and create useful program tools. Supportive of their children’s exploration of learning, Mark’s parents arranged private tutoring and enrollment in computer classes to help their son further develop his skills. Long before Mark began his freshman year at Harvard he had already created two software programs: ZuckNet and Synapse. The former generated a “ping” between com-puters like an alert; the latter tracked a user’s taste in music and helped them discover similar music that appealed to them. Computer giants Microsoft and AOL offered $1 million for Synapse. Mark turned them down. So significant has Facebook become to our world, that Time magazine named Mark Zuckerberg their 2010 Person of the Year. For using technology to “bridge continents” and create a new means of exchanging information with the touch of a keyboard stroke, Mark is recognized as one of the brightest and most successful entrepreneurs of the twenty-first century.

“Aretha employs a conversational tone, including details that flesh out the historical context . . . the depth of information here, especially Malcolm’s role as an uncompromising alternative to the mainstream Civil Rights Movement, makes this title a useful addition.” —School Library Journal on A Time for Martyrs: The Life of Malcolm X

Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) was born in Leipzig, Germany, during the Romantic era, a time that favored great passions and feel-ings, and the freedom of imagination in literature, fine arts, and music. At five years of age, she began taking piano lessons from her father, a highly regarded teacher of piano, and developed into a child prodigy who composed music and gave concerts throughout Europe. As a young adult, she defied her father and married one of his stu-dents, the composer Robert Schumann.

Throughout her brilliant concert career, Clara Schumann played her own musical compositions as well as her husband's and those of other composers. “There is nothing greater than the joy of compos-ing something oneself,” she said, “and then listening to it.” Clara tended to her husband through his progressively worsening mental illness and, after his death, was sole support of their eight children. With a career that spanned sixty-three years, Clara Schumann was one of the best-known concert artists of her time and, thanks in part to a posthumous profile on Facebook, she remains popular among new generations.

The history of the United States and Mexico has been intertwined since the founding of the first European colonies. This sometimes volatile relationship continues today with the current debate over immigration, free trade, and other controversial issues. The Story of Mexico brings to life the dramatic events and fascinating characters that created modern Mexico and provides insight on how this proud country may develop in decades to come.

“Both volumes have a lively narrative style; the events come alive as interesting stories rather than listings of facts and dates.”

REVIEW

“Corrigan’s account is masterfully crafted. He connects the Korean War of the 1950s to contemporary struggles in the region, capturing the war’s lasting impact. Several chapters begin with a short biography of a key player, both past and present. The author is quick to point out that although this conflict was overshadowed by wars that preceded or followed it, the Korean War was a blueprint for all other Cold War contentions, including the Vietnam War. The language is clear and appropriate for the intended audience. Readers will have no problem understanding the military jargon because Corrigan seamlessly uses today’s vernacular in the explanations, rendering the glossary almost unnecessary. The various photos, most of which are black and white, add an element that beckons to visual learners. This title is a must-have for war buffs and report writers, who will find the time line particularly helpful.”
