What a busy term Year 5/6 have had!

English Term Overview This term year 6 looked at discussing and debating which book they preferred (Fantastic Mr Fox or the BFG) in the end it was very equal. Year 5 looked at comparing BFG (the movie and book). Both year levels combined their skills to have fun writing Sizzling Starts and sentences using patterns. Congratulations to everyone in the class for their hard work in this area of the term.

Mathematics Term Overview Students in both year levels have been developing their skills and use of co-ordinates and Cartesian Planes. We have been practicing our speed and accuracy with our number facts and we are trying hard to do 100 number facts in 6 minutes, which has helped the whole class to improve with their skills when solving number problems.

HASS Term Overview Year 5 have been closely looking at urban planning and the impact of humans and environmental issues that affect where, why and how people live where they do in the local and state. Year 6 has been exploring more global issues and have focussed on Human Rights, Child Rights, Citizenship and Migration/Emigration. We have enjoyed having interesting and sometimes animated discussions around these areas.

Science Term Overview Year 5 and 6 explored, investigated and experimented with Solids, Liquids and Gases and found out that Matter does Matter.

Special Events All students must be congratulated for their fantastic efforts for our ART GALLERY presentations. At the beginning of the term we worked with a local artist Cathy O’Brien who showed the group how to make felt. For our efforts we produced three pieces of work – one was sold at Auction and the other two are proudly hanging in the Administration/Library building for all visitors to see. The students also produced amazing pieces of art using techniques called Zentangles and Pop Art. For the Year 6 cohort the proud moment for them having input into the production of the wall mural at the end of B Block (Year 5/6) building. We have to sincerely thank Judith, Maryanne and Claire for their expertise and guidance in the preparation and creation of the amazing ongoing piece of art. Today was also a special day for some of our year 5 students who presented their School Captain speeches to students, staff and their parents. Good luck to each one of you – I know you all have the potential to undertake such a special responsibility. (Rebecca, Chinta, Jasmine, Eve, Ruby, John, Jakub and Nellie. Today also sees students sharing lunch (a pizza party) with our local member Andrew Powell, which our class had the pleasure of winning. Special mention should go to work created by Ben and Celine. Congratulation however must go to Jasmine Carroll was announced as the overall winner of the Christmas card entries. Well done and thank you to all students who participated. To all families I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and belief in your children – the work achieved this semester by everyone of the class is to be commended. To the 17 x year 6 students leaving Montville at the end of next week I would like to wish them every success next year as they start their journey through high school. Remember “Aim High”!
