    invent the telephone?

    A From his observation

    B From Elisha Gray

    C From telegraphD From teleprinter

32 Why did he want to invent a telephone?

    music into the project

C Because the telegraph is limited to receiving

and sending one message at a time

telephone as a means of communication

33 The word this refers toA electric current

    B different tones

    C dot-and-dash morse code

    D telephone

34 From the passage, we know that

A Bell used his understanding of music and

nature of sound during his experiment

B Bells first invention was a telephone

C Bell invented his telephone at a very old age

D Bell and Elisha Gray invented the telegraph

    5

Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a pioneer inthe field of telecommunications. In 1878, at the age of 29, Alexander Graham Bellinvented his telephone. His laboratory notebooks demonstrate, however that he wasdriven by a genuine and rare intellectual curiosity that kept him regularly searching, striving and wanting always to learn and to create. He also explore the realm ofcommunication as well as engage in a great variety of scientific activities involvingkites, airplanes, tetrahedral structures, sheep-breeding, artificial respiration, desalinationand water distillation and hydrolysis.

In the 1870s, he and Elisha Gray also an inventor, independently designed devices

that could transmit speech electrically. Both of them rushed their respective designs tothe patent office and Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone first. The telegraph and telephone are both wire-based electrical system, and Alexander Graham Bells success withthe telephone came as a direct result of his attempts to improve the telegraph. When Bell began experimentingwith electrical signals, the telegraph had been an established means of communication for some 30 years. However, the telegraph with its dot-and-dash morse code, was basically limited to receiving and sending onemessage at a time. Bells extensive knowledge of the nature of sound and his understanding of music enabledhim to come out with the idea of transmitting multiple messages over the same wire at the same time.

By June 1875, he and the other inventors had proven that different tones would vary the strength of anelectric current in a wire. To achieve this, they have to build a working transmitter with a membrane capableof varying electronic currents and a receiver that would reproduce these variations in audible frequencies. On 2June 1875, while he was experimenting his technique called harmonic telegraph, he discovered the hearsound over a wire. The sound was that of twanging clock spring. He described his successful experiment withtelephone on 10 March 1876.

    7

    Tristan

I hate the way that I feel right now. Im not sure how to describe it but I thinks its a mixture of sad

and bad. How can that be? Well, I feel sad because Im leaving my old school and I feel bad becauseIm also leaving James.

James is my twin brother. Hes much smarter than me. He can do everything. He can dress himselfand walk and play football and write with a pen instead of a computer. I would be able to do thosethings too, if I didnt have a disability.

My mum wouldnt be pleased if she heard me saying disability. She says the word she wants

hear me say is ability. I dont know who invented the dis word, she says. Im not interested inwhat you cant do. Im only interested in what you can do.
