Millersville Monthly a community spotlight from Millersville at Fall Creek Valley Millersville Musings Here you'll find a note from Board President, Amy Hammes related to all things MFCV. Hi neighbor! We're so glad you're checking out our new monthly newsletter - welcome! Our goal is to let you know what our community organization is doing to make Millersville a better place to live. Along the way, some cool things transpire. Let me tell you how community happens unexpectedly, especially when there's a problem. By now many of you have heard about the stolen hawk: a one-of-a-kind sculpture cast in bronze that mirrors the lifesize representation of the red-tailed hawk with whom we co-habitate. At the time of writing this, I don’t know whether it will be found or replaced. However, I want to reflect on the sense of community that developed to get us to this point. We hold monthly Quick Hitter Litter Clean-Ups - Phyllis Starks organizes them. It’s an opportunity for folks who are frustrated by the litter to get together and do something about it. Phyllis was out of town so I volunteered to lead the clean-up. A resident who follows us on Facebook had just finished picking up litter and stopped in Starbucks to check in. She also mentioned that a few days prior she noticed the hawk was missing – community was happening. In the following days, a compact group of Millersville volunteers quickly mobilized. We filed a report with both IMPD and the Parks Department; notified the artist; notified the public; and contacted our partners on the project. We were shocked to see our Facebook post alone reach thousands more people than we ever could have contacted on our own, because followers cared enough about our problem to spread the word. Thoughtful support poured in from neighbors and partners across social media who shared our frustration and sadness. It was truly a surprising outpouring of compassion from a community that stretched further than we even imagined. Community happens unexpectedly.

When a problem occurs, community is all around. Our Millersville hands reached out andconnected with people who may have never heard of us, but we’re grateful for theirsupport. Many thanks go to the volunteers who are advocating for our community; to theteam at RTV – 6 and IndyStar; to our neighbors and partners in non-profit on socialmedia; to Officer Saunders and Park Ranger Slayton; and to our collaborators at KeepIndianapolis Beautiful, without whom the sculpture with the beautiful bronze hawk wouldnot have been possible. We want you to be proud of our community and the work we do to keep it beautiful. Youmight see Millersville volunteers wearing their safety vests around – honk and say hi!Keep your eyes open, because community happens unexpectedly.
