• The Mont Blanc massif has being put forward as a potential World Heritage Site because of its uniqueness and its cultural importance.

History• The entire mountain

had formed part of the Duchy of Savoy and since 1723 of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

• After the Second Italian Independence War, France obtained the Savoy and a part of the mountain.

Climbing

• The first recorded ascent of Mont Blanc was on 8 August 1786 by Jacques Balmat and the doctor Michel Paccard. The first woman to reach the summit was Marie Paradis in 1808.

Security

• Every year the Mont Blanc massif takes many victims.There are courses that require knowledge of high-altitude mountaineering, a guide (or at least a veteran mountaineer), and proper equipment.

• From the summit of Mont Blanc on a clear day, the Jura, the Vosges, the Black Forest and the Massif Central mountain ranges can be seen, as well as the principal summits of the Alps.
