The Customer

Lyon & Turnbull was established in Edinburgh in 1826 and is Scotland’s oldest firm of auctioneers. In more recent years the auctioneers’ has grown significantly with the help of innovative marketing and has become the fastest growing auction house in the UK, with offices and representatives throughout the country. Lyon & Turnbull is now becoming identified on an international stage, and deal in continental paintings along with jewellery, silver, furniture, ceramics, books and decorative arts.

The Customer Objectives

The Auctioneers realised that in order to maintain their growth and communicate easily with their regional offices they needed a robust and reliable IT support package in place.

Alex Dove, Operations Manager at the Auctioneers explains, “We were looking for a more comprehensive IT system care/ support package and an updated, more streamlined communications system. Our regional offices are very important to us and it was vital that the users in these locations could work at the same level as those in the main base.”

TSG’s relationship with Lyon & Turnbull began back in 2007 after we were selected to support their Pegasus Opera II system. Subsequently in 2011 TSG managed the Auctioneers’ upgrade to Pegasus Opera 3.

With the success of the upgrade and strong relationship with TSG, Alex Dove explains why they approached TSG for a new IT project, “In 2011 it was decided that a complete review of our IT support was required. TSG were top of our list as they offered a comprehensive support package that would cover all our communication needs, not just in our Scottish head office but for our network of regional offices across the UK.”

With a full audit of Lyon & Turnbull’s infrastructure, TSG specialists soon discovered that it was overcomplicated and in some areas appeared to be unsafe.

TSG installed a new server platform offering safe and reliable backup centrally. It was important for the business to have immediate access to key applications both at head office as well as regional offices – an EFM circuit was therefore implemented to ensure a fast broadband connection was achieved.
