Since his well-receivedEdinburgh College of Artdegree show in the 1980s,McLaren has attracted theattention of dealers andcollectors alike. As well asfinding ready representation, most notably from TheScottish Gallery in Edinburghand Portland Gallery inLondon, he has shownregularly in the Royal ScottishAcademy and Royal GlasgowInstitute.

Though McLaren’s still lifesare redolent of the ScottishColourists’ legacy, his style isperhaps best described asExpressionist and his workhas been exhibited alongsideMarcus Lupertz and GeorgBaselitz in the past. Hisapproach to composition andhandling has been describedas akin to performance; thevitality of the brushwork andvibrancy of the paletteattesting to this. Though his

work encompasses both stilllife and landscape, McLaren’s‘action’ paintings are perhapsthe most representative ofthis energetic approach. Hisdepictions of drivers andcyclists in abstracted motionare particularly popularamongst collectors, containing a great sense ofimmediacy and fun, sweepingthe viewer along for the ride.

McLaren has alwaysmaintained that he does not

draw inspiration fromnegative emotion and ratherpaints to express euphoria, explaining his widespreadappeal. Some of the workshere have never been seenbefore on the market anddemonstrate his currentpreoccupations with theOrkney landscape.

Jyoti Bhatt is one of India’sforemost contemporaryartists, with a career thatspans several decades and anumber of disciplines. Heunderwent extensiveacademic training; studyingin Baroda, Rajasthan, Naplesand New York. It was in thelatter city that he learned thepractise of intaglioprintmaking in the 1960s. Onhis return to India, Bhatt tookup a teaching position at theFaculty of Art at M.S.U.Baroda.

Famously experimental, Bhatthas mastered numerousmediums over the course ofhis career. Painting was hisinitial love and characteriseshis first phase between themid-1950s and 60s. Anintensive focus onprintmaking followed whichremains the best known andmost influential area of hisoutput. Fellow artists JeramPatel, Bhupen Khakhar andGulammohammed Sheikhalso took up the practise andcollectively the group became

known as The Baroda School.Latterly, Bhatt embracedphotography. Feelingpassionately about thegradual disappearance ofIndia’s folkloric culture in theface of consumerism, Bhattextensively documented theartistic traditions of theGujarat area. This body ofwork is valued highly amongsocial historians and is anachievement that willdoubtless gain increasingsignificance in the face oftime and continuing progress.

In spite of hisexperimentation, a cohesiveaesthetic underpins Bhatt’spractise. Best described as aplayful assimilation of Popand Folk art, he explores andcelebrates his culture in acolourful and stylized fashion. His work is featured innumerous internationalcollections including TheMuseum of Modern Art inNew York, The SmithsonianInstitute in Washington D.C.and The British Museum inLondon.

John Bratby is undoubtedlyone of the most notablefigures in 20th Century BritishArt, both artistically and interms of reputation. Taking upthe Realist baton from Sickertand the Camden Town Group,Bratby developed anExpressionistic take on thestyle, painting in a mannerthat led to the coining of theterm ‘Kitchen Sink Realism’.‘Kitchen Sink’ soon began tobe used in reference toliterature, theatre and film ofthe day that also explored thebanality of Post-War Britishlife. Bratby had clearlycaptured something of the1950s British zeitgeist and hissuccess after leaving theRoyal College of Art was swiftand remarkable.

Born in Wimbledon in 1928,Bratby found solace from histurbulent childhood inpainting and gained entry tothe Royal College of Art in theearly 1950s. Thequintessential artisticeccentric, he was known tobeg and sleep rough in HydePark or the attics of the RCA.Once graduated, Bratbyenjoyed a meteoric rise topublic and critical renown. Hewas a clever self-publicistand happy to provide

salacious details of hisbohemian lifestyle to areceptive media. In manyways, Bratby was Britain’sfirst celebrity artist, andplayed the media game veryastutely. The internationalaccolades rolled in and Bratbywon the Guggenheim Awardfor three consecutive yearsbetween 1956 and 1958.

Perhaps inevitably, a backlashcommenced in the 1960s asPop Art rose to popularity andBritain no longer wanted toexamine itself through thegrubby mirror of realism.Bratby remained popular with

self-portraiture. It solvescompositional difficulties andconnotes introspection andself-reflection – the artistallowing the viewer to look athim through his own eyes.Expressionistically rendered, the Germanic influence ofOskar Kokoshka and theGerman School is also highlytangible here.

Bratby and the Kitchen SinkSchool have enjoyed recentcritical re-examinations,including a significantretrospective in the NationalPortrait Gallery in 1991.

The 1970ssaw his personal life becomeincreasingly colourful and hispalette followed suitaccordingly. Most of hisportraiture was producedduring the late 1970s andearly 1980s. This self-portraitshows the artist, his cat andthe detritus of a presumablychaotic studio reflected in alarge gilt mirror. FromParmigianino to PierreBonnard, artists have longused the mirror as a device in

100.5cm x 184cm (40in x 72in)

Note:

This work dates from 2000.

£3,000-5,000

The success of a wave oftalented young GlasgowSchool of Art graduates inrecent years has cementedthe city’s status as one ofEurope’s most excitingcreative epicentres. TobyPaterson is notable amongthem, enjoying both publicrenown and criticalappreciation since winningthe Becks Future Award in2002.

Producing paintings, reliefs,sculptural assemblages and

murals, Paterson has apassion for Modernistaestheticism and isparticularly influenced by theutilitarian stylization ofConstructivism, the pairedback formal play of the St IvesSchool and Post War‘Utopian’ architecture by LeCorbusier and Mies van derRohe.

Though Paterson’s artsuccessfully takes Modernismand reinvents it for acontemporary audience, he

also explores the realitiesbehind the movement’sideologies. Today, thearchitecture of this period islargely perceived to havefailed in its purpose; the1960s tower blocks andestates failing tosympathetically assimilatewith or enhance the urbanlandscape, reading asbrutalist as opposed tominimalist. Paterson’s workseeks to re-discover theoriginal ideal behind suchdesigns, exploring why they

were perhaps destined to failin their actualisation. This iswhy works such as ‘TheSeason’s Reverse II’ are sosuccessful. When isolated onan entirely blank background, the utopian purity andmasterful simplicity of thedesign is able to be read asoriginally envisaged.

One of Scotland’s leadingartistic talents, Nathan Coleylives and works in Glasgow. As with many of today’sbiggest names, Coley cameto public attention afterreceiving a Turner Prizenomination in 2007. He hasbeen critically well-receivedfor considerably longer, however, and in the past haswon the Artist Award,Scottish Arts Council Award(1996 & 2003), the HenryMoore Fellowship, CreativeScotland Award and the Artfor Architecture Award. Heworks mainly in thedisciplines of photography, video, installation andconstruction.

Coley is intrigued by the builtenvironment and his workoften investigates themeaning structures areimbued with by those thatplan and build them, and howthat meaning can besubverted by specific eventsor the re-interpretations ofothers. There is often asecular element to his

artworks, with places andsignifiers of worship arecurring theme.

Edinburgh is the site ofseveral of Coley’s mostsignificant pieces, perhapsthe best known being ThereWill Be No Miracles Here, alarge scale ‘light text’installation which, for a time, found its home on the lawnoutside the Dean Gallery inEdinburgh, set against apanoramic view of the city.

The photograph in this salepertains specifically to InMemory, Coley’s commissionfor Jupiter ArtLand, asculpture park on theoutskirts of Edinburgh. Theconstruction is the artist’sfirst permanent work andconsists of gravestonesarranged in a specially madeconcrete edifice; reminiscentof the family grave plotsfound on country houseestates around Britain. Coleyis deliberately ambiguousabout the origins of theheadstones, insisting thatpeople’s ruminations on the

matter are intrinsic to theexperience of the piece.Despite the fact theheadstones no longer‘belong’ to anyone – Coleyhas deleted the names anddedications – or mark agrave, the site exudes asense of quiet mournfulness, making us aware of our ownprojections and taughtresponse. Conversely, InMemory also makes us querythe human ritual of erectingsuch monuments in people’s

memory, ultimatelyquestioning its futility.

This lot is a uniquephotographic print and wasgifted to a member of theteam that assisted InMemory’s construction. Italso features Coley’scharacteristic gold leaf, anaddition often made to hisphotographs.
