It comes days after myste- rious sabotage attacks on several tankers in highly sen- sitive Gulf waters and drone strikes on a Saudi crude pipeline by Yemen rebels who Riyadh claimed were acting on Iranian orders. The United States has also deployed an aircraft carrier and bombers to the Gulf over alleged threats from Iran. King Salman invited Gulf leaders and Arab League member states to two emer- gency summits in Mecca on May 30 to discuss recent "aggressions and their conse- quences", the kingdom's offi- cial SPA news agency report- ed late Saturday. Saudi Arabia's minister of state for foreign affairs, Adel al-Jubeir, said Sunday his country does not want to go to war with Iran but would defend itself. Saudi Arabia "does not want a war, is not looking for it and will do everything to prevent it," he said. "But at the same time, if the other side chooses war, the kingdom will respond with strength and determi- nation to defend itself and its interests." The kingdom's regional allies welcomed the Saudi invitation. The UAE's foreign min- istry said the current "critical circumstances" require a uni- fied Arab and Gulf stance. The meetings will be a "sig- nificant opportunity for the countries of the region to achieve their aspirations for establishing peace and stabil- ity," it said. According to Elizabeth Dickinson, senior analyst with the International Crisis Group think tank, Riyadh wants to show that the region is behind it. "The US maximum pres- sure campaign against Iran has little support among Western allies," she told AFP. "Saudi Arabia is building, in its eyes, the strongest coalition of Arab and Muslim states that it has ever assem- bled to push back against its adversary, Iran." Four ships including two Saudi oil tankers were dam- aged in mysterious sabotage attacks last Sunday off the UAE's Fujairah, near the Strait of Hormuz -- a vital maritime route for oil exports which Iran has threatened to close in the event of a war. That incident was followed by drone strikes Tuesday claimed by Yemen's Iran- aligned rebels on a major Saudi oil pipeline built as an alternative export route if the Strait of Hormuz were to be closed. Around 16 million Australians swarmed to the polling booths across the country on Saturday to elect the nation's 31st prime min- ister, in what was widely referred to as the climate- change election. The latest results showed that the Conservative Coalition has won 74 seats while labour secured 66. A party needs 76 seats for a simple majority in the 151- member House of Representatives. It was not clear if 51-year-old Morrison will require the support of independent MPs to govern. But an independent, Helen Haines, who won from the seat of Indi, said that she would be working with the Coalition in the scenario of a hung parliament. Haines said she was very determined to work with the government on addressing climate change. Morrison along his wife Jenny visited a church in Sydney's Sutherland Shire on Sunday in his electorate of Cook where he thanked his local voters. "I have always believed in miracles... for me and for my government, for all of my team it's all about you...tonight is about every single Australian," a beaming Morrison told his supporters. "You don't get to be a Prime Minister and serve in that capacity unless you first are a member for your local elec- torate. I want to thank every- body here in my local elec- torate and local team," said Morrison, who has only led the government since last August, when Liberal Party colleagues lost confidence in his predecessor Malcolm Turnbull. Morrison had wooed voters by saying if re-elected, the Coalition would deliver a sta- ble economy, more jobs and tax cuts. He also promised funds for women's career ini- tiative and domestic violence and conservative plans to deal with climate change. "Our government will get back to work just as Gladys Berejiklian got back to work in New South Wales, just a few months ago," he told his supporters. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump congratulated Morrison on his election victory. President Trump congratu- lated Prime Minister Morrison on his Coalition's victory in Australia's federal election, White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said. "The two leaders reaf- firmed the critical impor- tance of the long-standing alliance and friendship between the United States and Australia, and they pledged to continue their close cooperation on shared priorities," Deere said. Center-left Labor Party leader Bill Shorten, who campaigned heavily on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conceded his defeat and said he would resign as the party leader. "I called Scott Morrison to congratulate him... wished him good fortune and good courage in the service of our great nation. The national interest required no less," Shorten said while address- ing his supporters in Melbourne. A Nine-Galaxy poll released shortly before the voting sta- tions closed in the east of the country showed a victory for the Labor party and Liberal Party-led coalition losing its bid for a third three-year term. The poll showed the Labor winning as many as 82 seats, beating the ruling Coalition. On Friday, media reports also endorsed Labor leader Shorten as the best chance to end a "cycle of instability" in Australian politics. Before elections, the Coalition held 73 seats, while Labor 72 in the House of Representatives. Demanding the immedi- ate release of the 73-year- old three-time former prime minister, the BNP standing committee mem- ber Jamiruddin Sircar said that due to the loneliness and lack of proper treat- ment, Zia is suffering from various ailments including heart disease. She is lodged in a 200- year-old prison in Dhaka since February last year, serving a 10-year jail term in two graft cases. "Khaleda Zia is trapped between life and death. Keeping Khaleda in jail, depriving her of bail, is contrary to the Constitution and human rights, since her conviction in any of the case had not been finally disposed off by the Supreme Court," Sircar was quoted as saying by the Dhaka Tribune. The former parliament speaker asked the govern- ment to allow her to receive proper treatment at a hos- pital of her choice. "The government had assured it would make proper arrangement for Khaleda Zia's treatment, but not enough initiatives were taken yet. "It is a bad sign that they are not letting Zia out for treatment, even in this worsening condition," Sircar said, adding that she is at a serious risk of sud- den cardiac arrest. He also claimed that the cases against Zia are "polit- ically motivated". BNP Vice Chairman and one of Zia's personal physi- cians AZM Zahid Hossain, said: "Zia is suffering from high blood sugar... and always needs to be on insulin. She has a sore tongue, which is not heal- ing due to the high blood sugar. Her left shoulder and elbow joint have become insensitive. "According to her doctors, Zia is a special care patient. It is important to ensure all the facilities needed for her personal care". The committee claimed that the government has decided to hold trials of the pending cases against her at Dhaka Central Jail in order to prevent her release from jail. Last year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina accused Zia of "faking" her illness in jail to avoid appearances in court where graft cases are pending against her. The Bangladesh govern- ment, citing security rea- sons, last week set up a new makeshift court adjacent to a prison outside Dhaka to try Zia who is facing sever- al criminal and graft cases. She was sent to jail in February last year by a local court on charges of embezzling foreign dona- tions meant for an orphan- age, named after her slain husband and president Ziaur Rehman, during her premiership between 2001 and 2006. Rehman, a military ruler- turned-politician, was the founder of the BNP. The incident happened on May 12, when over 30 graves in a village in Okara district of Punjab province, about 200 km from Lahore, were found desecrated. Following the incident, there were reports of tension between Muslim and Christian communities. After police failed to make any breakthrough in the case, even after six days, the local Christians on Sunday held demonstration outside the Okara police station, demanding action. Protest ended after District Police Officer (Okara) Athar Ismael assured the protesters that police would soon arrest those involved in the inci- dent. "Some miscreants could be behind this incident whose sole purpose seems to cause violence," he said, adding that police was investigating the matter He said recently some influential people from an adjoining village had stopped the Christians from building a church. According to the priest of the village's St Anthony Church, Father James Bahadur, more than 30 graves were desecrated. "It is very sad to see that some people attacked our Christian cemetery, they damaged graves. The cul- prits must be arrested," he said, adding the act of van- dalism has spread terror in the village among the Christian community. "This seems to be the hand- iwork of extremists who wanted to sow hatred among people of both faiths and to ruin the peace and harmony in the area," he said. The cemetery in question is more than 100 years old spreading over 6 acres of land. The oldest tomb dates back to 1903. It houses also tombs of the English.
