AGENCYDUBAI: Saudi Arabia hascalled for emergency regionaltalks to discuss mountingGulf tensions, saying Sundaythat it does not want warwith Iran but is ready todefend itself.
It comes days after myste-rious sabotage attacks onseveral tankers in highly sen-sitive Gulf waters and dronestrikes on a Saudi crudepipeline by Yemen rebels whoRiyadh claimed were actingon Iranian orders.
The United States has alsodeployed an aircraft carrierand bombers to the Gulf overalleged threats from Iran.
King Salman invited Gulfleaders and Arab Leaguemember states to two emer-gency summits in Mecca onMay 30 to discuss recent"aggressions and their conse-quences", the kingdom's offi-cial SPA news agency report-ed late Saturday.
Saudi Arabia's minister ofstate for foreign affairs, Adelal-Jubeir, said Sunday hiscountry does not want to goto war with Iran but woulddefend itself.
Saudi Arabia "does notwant a war, is not looking forit and will do everything toprevent it," he said.
"But at the same time, ifthe other side chooses war,the kingdom will respondwith strength and determi-nation to defend itself and itsinterests."
The kingdom's regional
allies welcomed the Saudiinvitation.
The UAE's foreign min-istry said the current "criticalcircumstances" require a uni-fied Arab and Gulf stance.
The meetings will be a "sig-nificant opportunity for thecountries of the region toachieve their aspirations forestablishing peace and stabil-ity," it said.
According to ElizabethDickinson, senior analystwith the International CrisisGroup think tank, Riyadhwants to show that theregion is behind it.
"The US maximum pres-sure campaign against Iranhas little support amongWestern allies," she told AFP.

AGENCYMELBOURNE: Australia'sruling Conservative Coalitionled by Prime Minister ScottMorrison on Sunday made a"miraculous" comeback in thegeneral election, defying exitpolls and devastating theopposition Labor Party, forc-ing its leader Bill Shorten tostep down.
Around 16 millionAustralians swarmed to thepolling booths across thecountry on Saturday to electthe nation's 31st prime min-ister, in what was widelyreferred to as the climate-change election.
The latest results showedthat the ConservativeCoalition has won 74 seatswhile labour secured 66. Aparty needs 76 seats for asimple majority in the 151-member House ofRepresentatives. It was notclear if 51-year-old Morrisonwill require the support ofindependent MPs to govern.
But an independent, HelenHaines, who won from theseat of Indi, said that shewould be working with the
Coalition in the scenario of ahung parliament. Hainessaid she was very determinedto work with the governmenton addressing climatechange.
Morrison along his wifeJenny visited a church inSydney's Sutherland Shireon Sunday in his electorate ofCook where he thanked hislocal voters.
"I have always believed inmiracles... for me and for mygovernment, for all of myteam it's all aboutyou...tonight is about everysingle Australian," a beamingMorrison told his supporters.
"You don't get to be a PrimeMinister and serve in thatcapacity unless you first area member for your local elec-torate. I want to thank every-body here in my local elec-torate and local team," saidMorrison, who has only ledthe government since lastAugust, when Liberal Partycolleagues lost confidence inhis predecessor MalcolmTurnbull.
Morrison had wooed votersby saying if re-elected, the
Coalition would deliver a sta-ble economy, more jobs andtax cuts. He also promisedfunds for women's career ini-tiative and domestic violenceand conservative plans todeal with climate change.
"Our government will getback to work just as GladysBerejiklian got back to workin New South Wales, just afew months ago," he told hissupporters. Meanwhile, USPresident Donald Trumpcongratulated Morrison onhis election victory.
President Trump congratu-lated Prime MinisterMorrison on his Coalition'svictory in Australia's federalelection, White House deputypress secretary Judd Deeresaid.
"The two leaders reaf-firmed the critical impor-tance of the long-standingalliance and friendshipbetween the United Statesand Australia, and theypledged to continue theirclose cooperation on sharedpriorities," Deere said.
Center-left Labor Partyleader Bill Shorten, who
campaigned heavily onreducing greenhouse gasemissions, conceded hisdefeat and said he wouldresign as the party leader.
"I called Scott Morrison tocongratulate him... wishedhim good fortune and goodcourage in the service of ourgreat nation. The nationalinterest required no less,"Shorten said while address-ing his supporters inMelbourne.
A Nine-Galaxy poll releasedshortly before the voting sta-tions closed in the east of thecountry showed a victory forthe Labor party and LiberalParty-led coalition losing itsbid for a third three-yearterm.
The poll showed the Laborwinning as many as 82 seats,beating the ruling Coalition.
On Friday, media reportsalso endorsed Labor leaderShorten as the best chance toend a "cycle of instability" inAustralian politics.
Before elections, theCoalition held 73 seats, whileLabor 72 in the House ofRepresentatives.

AGENCYDHAKA: Jailed formerprime minister Khaleda Ziais trapped between life anddeath as her health hasmassively deteriorated overthe last week due tounhealthy environment,according to herBangladesh NationalistParty.
Demanding the immedi-ate release of the 73-year-old three-time formerprime minister, the BNPstanding committee mem-ber Jamiruddin Sircar saidthat due to the lonelinessand lack of proper treat-ment, Zia is suffering fromvarious ailments includingheart disease.
She is lodged in a 200-year-old prison in Dhakasince February last year,serving a 10-year jail termin two graft cases.
"Khaleda Zia is trappedbetween life and death.Keeping Khaleda in jail,depriving her of bail, iscontrary to theConstitution and humanrights, since her convictionin any of the case had notbeen finally disposed off bythe Supreme Court," Sircarwas quoted as saying by the
Dhaka Tribune.The former parliament
speaker asked the govern-ment to allow her to receiveproper treatment at a hos-pital of her choice.
"The government hadassured it would makeproper arrangement forKhaleda Zia's treatment,but not enough initiativeswere taken yet.
"It is a bad sign that theyare not letting Zia out fortreatment, even in thisworsening condition,"Sircar said, adding that sheis at a serious risk of sud-den cardiac arrest.
He also claimed that thecases against Zia are "polit-ically motivated".
BNP Vice Chairman andone of Zia's personal physi-cians AZM Zahid Hossain,said: "Zia is suffering fromhigh blood sugar... andalways needs to be oninsulin. She has a soretongue, which is not heal-ing due to the high bloodsugar. Her left shoulderand elbow joint havebecome insensitive.
"According to her doctors,Zia is a special carepatient. It is important toensure all the facilities
needed for her personalcare".
The committee claimedthat the government hasdecided to hold trials of thepending cases against herat Dhaka Central Jail inorder to prevent her releasefrom jail.
Last year, Prime MinisterSheikh Hasina accused Ziaof "faking" her illness in jailto avoid appearances incourt where graft cases arepending against her.
The Bangladesh govern-ment, citing security rea-sons, last week set up a newmakeshift court adjacent toa prison outside Dhaka totry Zia who is facing sever-al criminal and graft cases.
She was sent to jail inFebruary last year by alocal court on charges ofembezzling foreign dona-tions meant for an orphan-age, named after her slainhusband and presidentZiaur Rehman, during herpremiership between 2001and 2006.
Rehman, a military ruler-turned-politician, was thefounder of the BNP.

AGENCYLAHORE: Members of theChristian community onSunday protested afterpolice failed to make abreakthrough in a case dese-cration of graves in a ceme-tery in Pakistan's Punjabprovince.
The incident happened onMay 12, when over 30 gravesin a village in Okara districtof Punjab province, about200 km from Lahore, werefound desecrated.
Following the incident,there were reports of tensionbetween Muslim andChristian communities.
After police failed to makeany breakthrough in thecase, even after six days, thelocal Christians on Sundayheld demonstration outsidethe Okara police station,demanding action.
Protest ended afterDistrict Police Officer(Okara) Athar Ismaelassured the protesters thatpolice would soon arrestthose involved in the inci-dent.
"Some miscreants could bebehind this incident whose
sole purpose seems to causeviolence," he said, addingthat police was investigatingthe matter
He said recently someinfluential people from anadjoining village hadstopped the Christians frombuilding a church.
According to the priest ofthe village's St AnthonyChurch, Father JamesBahadur, more than 30graves were desecrated.
"It is very sad to see thatsome people attacked ourChristian cemetery, theydamaged graves. The cul-prits must be arrested," hesaid, adding the act of van-dalism has spread terror inthe village among theChristian community.
"This seems to be the hand-iwork of extremists whowanted to sow hatred amongpeople of both faiths and toruin the peace and harmonyin the area," he said.
The cemetery in question ismore than 100 years oldspreading over 6 acres ofland. The oldest tomb datesback to 1903. It houses alsotombs of the English.
