Skim reading involves looking at text for very specific information. When skim reading, the detail does not matter. Skim reading enables the reader to find the approximate place where the answer can be found.
Scanning is a technique that involves reading a text very carefully, so often slowly. Its purpose is to find something very specific.
Use the technique – skim first, then scan, brown (meaning highlight in some way e.g. underlining key words, phrases and numbers in brown and read around where you scanned to help you to find the answer.)
In short: skim, scan, brown, then read around.

When asked to write one word, make sure you copy only one word and that you do it exactly. If you write more than one word you will not get a mark for that question.
When you’re asked to write one phrase, or a cluster of words, do just that. If you write just one word you will not get a mark for that question.
When justifying/supporting your answer – try to quote the text exactly.

What is a relative clause?
A relative clause can be used to give additional information about a noun. They are introduced by a relative pronoun like: 'that', 'which', 'who', 'whose', 'where' and 'when'. For example:I won’t stand by the man who smells of slime. In this example, the relative clause is ‘who smells of slime’. It provides more information about the man. The relative pronoun, ‘who’, is used to connect these clauses in the sentence.

What is Direct Speech? Direct Speech: a sentence where the exact words that are spoken are written in speech marks, quotation marks or inverted commas. Direct Speech can be used in multiple written texts, especially within stories. It can help readers feel engaged and understand characters better.
Reported speech exists when one talks about what somebody else said – for example: Direct Speech: “I've been to London three times.” The reported speech version is: She said she'd been to London three times.

• Before the first word of speech, put (open) inverted commas.
• After the last word of speech, close the inverted commas.
• The first word of speech starts with a capital letter
• Immediately before the inverted commas are closed, put appropriate punctuation e.g. a comma (if the sentence is continuing – otherwise a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
• The first word begins with a capital letterMake clear who is speaking.
• Reported speech, on the other hand, does not include inverted commas because the words are not an exact copy of what was originally said. The quote may have been paraphrased. Look up ‘paraphrased’ and write a definition.
