Kit Car Races, Basildon – all day
Dear Parents, In 22 years, I don't think I have ever experienced heat in school buildings quite like we did at both Bryanston Square and Marylebone Lane this week. Normally these buildings ventilate rather well but I think the post 30 degree mark was just too much for even these well designed, grand old buildings. With air conditioning in only a few rooms in both schools, the temperature was, at times, rather unpleasant and the boys certainly appreciated our relaxed approach to uniform in order to minimise discomfort. Whilst relationships with our neighbours and the Bryanston Square community improve with every passing school year, we are not yet at the stage where we can take the boys into the Square for impromptu lessons under a shady tree. We do though, at the Senior School, have the opportunity to walk the few minutes up the road to Paddington Street Gardens, where Latin, English and Geography lessons have all taken place this week, as well as break time for Years 7 and 8, replete with refreshing ice lollies. It's very British to moan about the weather, hot, cold, wet, dry but as long as we can utilise our local area at Wetherby, we will embrace the lot and adapt to all conditions accordingly. Something else that I perceive as very British (though I'm sure they have them in loads of other countries!) is hot air ballooning and it was a remarkable sight earlier in the week to see one pass right overhead where I live. Patrick and Joseph didn't seem massively impressed and, as you can see below, I couldn't even get Joseph to appear in the photo but I thought it was a lovely thing to witness (and it was a lot closer than it appears in the photograph). A week and a half to go, yet no sign of anyone slowing down and meandering towards the end of term. Both school calendars look busier than ever next week and I know how much the boys love the activities and events that come around at this time of year. Enjoy the next two weeks boys – there are 8 weeks of holiday coming up and I guarantee that, once the novelty of getting up late has worn off after a couple of days, you will be missing Wetherby and already looking forward to coming back to School...possibly... Have a good weekend,
Citizen of the Week
This week’s Citizen of the Week is Gray G in 5K. Gray has been fantastic in school this year but was noted this week for something quite special: putting others before himself in a really meaningful way. Every boy loves a lolly on a hot day but it takes a special kind of lad to distribute them to others, before taking one for himself. Things like this do not go unnoticed. Well done, Gray!
Sportsman of the Week This week’s Sportsman of the Week is Frankie G in 6B. Man of the Match against The Hall on Monday, then achieving joint Top Scorer with 74 runs against St Paul’s School on Thursday, Frankie has enjoyed an outstanding week of cricket, representing his school superbly and wearing these honours with a modesty that speaks so highly of this talented sportsman. Well done, Frankie!
From the Senior Mistress – School Council
Miss Olney writes …
This week, in School Council there was plenty to discuss and we had a productive meeting with Chef Peter and Mr Billingham. There were lots of ideas to bring to the table and despite the Year 8 boys and PLT being away, Joshua stepped up to the mark to chair the meeting whilst James took on the role as ‘minute man’ to record the meeting minutes. Some of the ideas brought up at the meeting included….. After the success of Franchise Cricket, we are very excited about Franchise Football fixtures for the Autumn Term and have started to have a think of some names. These include; Tigers, Swashbucklers, Chiefs, Hammerheads, Superjacks, Firecrackers and Vipers. Please could School Council representatives speak more with their forms and we will vote on the ‘Top 3 Names’ next week in our meeting. The next item of the agenda was chocolate bars for Friday lunch as some boys are keen to bring back the Friday chocolate bar treat instead of their teacake treat. They would like to trial a Fudge or KitKat on Fridays as well as the teacake. Chef Peter was very accommodating and from today, he’ll be trialling both – hurrah! Luca in Year 4 mentioned laptop tokens and the possibility of rolling these out as a reward system for boys who have worked hard all week to have some laptop time or time on the iPads as part of ‘Golden Time’ in form. I know Mr Thorne is very interested in this idea and is already on the case with mocking up a design for these and bringing out this initiative in September. Another win for School Council! Snacks is often a hotly debated item on the School Council agenda and Chef Peter has asked each form to vote on their ‘top 3 snacks’ so that we can agree on a whole school consensus for these. We look forward to hearing more of these ideas next week… Finally, some of the boys have suggested ‘seasonal ball games’ at Hyde Park so footballs in the Autumn Term, rugby balls in the Spring Term etc. Miss Olney has already been bringing a special ‘Wetherby branded Frisbee’ to Hyde Park for the Lower School and she’ll be supplying some more next week.
Thanks everyone for all your ideas/suggestions and keep them coming!
Oscar’s fundraiser Mrs Noval writes… After such an amazing response last Friday for Oscar (the driver from Bus 1) I would like to say huge thank you to everyone who donated. We gave him just over £4000. Steph, Oscar’s daughter, sent me this lovely note, which I would like to share with you all… Words cannot describe how we feel about the help, support and kind love we have received from everyone at Wetherby Prep, it has been a huge comfort to us to know we are not alone and that people genuinely care! We are so grateful for everything, it has made this situation that bit better so a BIG THANK YOU to EVERYONE!
From the French Department – French Breakfast Madame Sebag writes…
On Tuesday and Thursday morning everyone had polished their French and was eager to ask for ‘un croissant, un pain au chocolat or un pain aux raisins’. The ‘pain au chocolat’ is definitely the most popular and it was good fun to hear boys give their order in French. Chef Peter had ordered ‘jus d’ananas’ in addition to the ‘jus de pomme’ and ‘jus d’orange’ and the boys were quite keen to say ‘judanana’ and enjoyed drinking their juice especially with the heat wave. We encourage you to let your son go to the local bakery when you are in France and to ask him to get your ‘petit déjeuner’. I have to say that my favourite is still a warm ‘baguette’.
From the Games Department – Baseball Club
Mr Bayes writes…. The Games Department have received interest a potential for a baseball club next year. The club would run through London Sports out of Wormwood Scrubs on a weeknight from January 2018 (exact day to be confirmed). For this to go ahead, we would need between 15- 20 boys to commit to the club for the Spring Term. Transport would be organised to the venue and possibly return (depending on demand). Please can you let me know if you are interested in playing and I will liaise with Mrs Stevens (Brooks’ Mother in 4B) who is the commissioner for baseball and softball in Great Britain. Sticking to the baseball theme I would like to promote the baseball summer league called ‘Summer Ball’ which kicks off for the next 4 weeks which is a great opportunity for boys (and girls) to try out the sport! http://mailchi.mp/londonsports/summer-ball-survey-1295365?e=e6c2d25eb7 And finally, Major League Baseball is heading to London to host an incredible 4th July bash. The MLB Battlegrounds extravaganza will culminate in an all-star ‘Home Run Derby’ hitting contest on the Main Stage, featuring some of MLB’s biggest hitters and surprise UK sporting stars, battling it out to score the most home runs against the clock. This unique All-American experience with a British twist is not one to miss this summer! http://www.bst-hydepark.com/news/detail/major-league-baseball-comes-to-open-house-on-july-4th
Week 33 Sports Report Well done to all those boys who represented the school recently in the various fixtures, home and away. Playing sport and representing the school is such an important feature of life at Wetherby Prep. As a result, we wanted to reflect this in a motto that we can all share and believe in - Play with vigour, play with pride Play with joy right by your side Be inspired, be the one Know you can, and overcome.

From the Performance Corner – Protein Bundle Bar
Mr McClinton writes…
This is an effective, easy to make nutritious snack when you want to avoid easily accessible sugary substitutes. I always recommend this protein bundle when advising people keen to add value to their daily food plan. This energy pick me up is also very satisfying. Rich in quality protein (nuts) with lots of healthy fats (coconut, nuts/seeds) as well as natural, low glycaemic sugars (xylitol/cinnamon), this vitamin and mineral rich snack supports mental and physical wellbeing. Ingredients: 150g cashew nuts 50g coconut flour 60g desiccated coconut zest and juice of 2 lemons 115g pitted dates Cinnamon powder 50g cashew nut butter 50g dried berries 30g mixed seeds 150g dairy free, sugar free chocolate 1tbsp coconut oil Method: - Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Blend the cashew nuts into a paste
- Add coconut flour & coconut flesh - Add lemon or fresh orange juice, dates, cashew nut butter - Pulse in some dark berries, cinnamon powder & seeds of choice. Remove contents and add to the
mix. - Melt raw, dark organic chocolate using coconut oil - Pour melted contents over the paste Press the mixture into a baking tray, chill in fridge, makes approx. 8 portions.

Happy Father’s Day, Mr Meliti!
Brooks S (4B) goes skiing on the hottest day of the year!
Last Sunday Brooks raced in the London Schools Ski Race on the outdoor artificial slope in Welwyn Garden City. It was a VERY hot day (33 degrees) to wear a helmet - long sleeves, gloves and ski boots! Brooks raced well as an independent wearing his Wetherby Prep colours and took 2nd Place both in the boys section and also 2nd overall in the mixed Year 2-4 category out of 43 racers. The slope is a good easy race for the boys to practice and gain experience. Hopefully We more boys will be able to participate next year to race in the dual slalom to go for the LSSR Cup!
