MONDAY 22ND JULY, 2013 TERM 3 WEEK 2
FOCUS OF THE WEEK – BE PROUD We have a lot to be proud of at Brisbania this week. I have had many visitors to my office to share some amazing work. Many students have achieved their next behaviour level from consistently following our rules and we have had success on the football field.
THE GREAT GATSBY – A GREAT NIGHT OUT – THIS FRIDAY The P & C has organised a great night out this Friday night to view the Great Gatsby at Avoca Beach Picture Theatre. Even though it is advertised as a “Chicks at the Flicks” event dads and men are most welcome to attend. Even better dads, here is an opportunity to earn some great ‘brownie’ points. Buy your partner a ticket to go to the movie whilst you stay home and watch the footy
with the kids! There will be some nibbles and a glass of wine. There will also be lucky door prizes and a raffle.
BOYS’ SOCCER GALA DAY Last week the boys travelled to Umina Oval to play a gala day against other schools as part of the state knockout. After two convincing wins in the first two rounds the boys played Avoca PS in the final. It was a very tight match with either team in a position to win the match. Unfortunately Avoca scored and we lost in the final 1 – 0. It was a great day and the boys represented Brisbania PS to their very best of ability. They showed perseverance and great sportsmanship. Special thanks to Ryan’s mum for washing all of the sporting gear. Thanks Mr McKeown and parent helpers for providing transport and encouragement

GIRLS’ SOCCER GALA DAY – UMINA OVAL Today our girls’ soccer team is down at Umina Oval for their gala day for the state knockout. We are looking forward to hearing their results. Thanks Mrs Self and the parents that have again volunteered in transporting and supporting the girls.
YEAR 6 CANBERRA EXCURSION Year 6 will be leaving this Wednesday morning for their school education excursion to Canberra. Whilst the children are there they will visit Parliament House and other significant landmarks to develop their understanding of democracy and our system of government. Mr Anderson and Miss Ellis will accompany the students on the excursion and we thank them for giving up time away from their own families to conduct the trip. Parents please ensure that your child is at school at 6:30am wearing their school uniform with Yr 6 shirt and a warm jacket. There will be updates on the expected arrival time on Friday via the school website, Facebook page and Twitter.
ERINA FAIR PERFORMANCE Next Monday our dance groups and drummers will travel to Erina Fair to perform as part of the Erina Learning Community Education Week Showcase. The students will perform on the stage in The Hive. We will also have some work on display in the Centre Court section of Erina Fair throughout the week. Parents are welcome to come along and watch the performance or check out the static display.
EDUCATION WEEK Next Week is Education Week and we will be celebrating by performing at Erina Fair and also holding our NAIDOC celebration on Thursday. Education Week, though, is just one week. At Brisbania we welcome the involvement of parents throughout the year. Parents and families visit our school regularly and have opportunities to visit classrooms at various times such as Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day celebrations.
VOLUNTEER SIGN IN We have slightly changed our sign in procedures for volunteers. On your first visit this term the office staff will provide you with some safety information and get you to sign that you have received that information. This is only necessary for the first time and on subsequent visits volunteers just sign in the new volunteers’ book.
DOG SAFETY TALKS Next Wednesday Kindergarten students will attend safety talks about dogs. The talks give students knowledge and strategies to be safe when around dogs. Thanks to Mrs Slattery for organising the talks.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Our Athletics carnival is fast approaching. The carnival will be held on Monday 5
th August.
Students in Years K,1 and 2 (those Year 2 students not participating in the full carnival) will travel to Mingara a little later this year so that they are not at the carnival for the full day. Premier’s Spelling Bee The Premier’s Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 as a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage with spelling. The competition is open to all government primary, central and community schools in NSW and comprises of two divisions – Junior for Years 3-4 and Senior for Years 5-6. Regional Finals are held in various locations across NSW in the last two weeks of Term 3. Each year the State Final is held at the Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC Centre, Sydney, with the final half hour of the Senior Final broadcast live on ABC Local Radio. The competition attracts significant publicity through media and television coverage. All Stage 2 and Stage 3 classes will hold an in class spelling competition. Two children from each class will be selected to compete at their stage assembly. Two successful students from each stage will then be chosen to represent Brisbania at the Regional Finals. Children interested in trying out for the Spelling Bee can collect a spelling list from Miss Iles or visit the website written below.
Class competitions held during week 4 (5th-9th August)
Stage Finals held 6th November
