Year 4 ArtThe Year 4 students have been practising their knowledge of one-point perspectives by creating fantastic landscapes with chalk pastels. Some produced snowy mountain landscapes, while others chose a desert theme. There was even an iconic dust storm masterpiece!

Prep/1What’s been happening in Health & Integrated Studies in the Prep/1 classes? Lots of smiles all around - and such creative, healthy fruit snacks!

Dear Parents/GuardiansWelcome to our last newslet-ter for Term 2! While it has been a term of challenges, we definitely have many things to thank and praise God for.

Firstly I would like to thank God for the dedicated teaching staff  we have. It has been gratifying to see the bet-ter than expected outcomes in literacy and numeracy through our standardised testing with Miss Grace, considering the upheaval the children experienced during the term. Well done students, parents and teachers.

I think that we can also praise God for the better than expected, at this point, outcome of Covid in our area. Thank you for playing your part in helping us implement new protocols on returning to school after home learning. While it looks like restrictions re-garding interactions will continue for longer than we expected now, as more covid cases present themselves in the larger communi-ty, the safety of everyone in our community will continue to be our focus. I encourage each of us to be mindful of this too as we head into the holiday period where travel-ling is more open to us all.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude and well wishes to the Webb family as they head back to Western Australia on your be-half. They have become family to us all and it’s always difficult to say goodbye to family!

Sandra Ferry, Principal.

WHEN GORILLAS GO TO BED“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. . . . For the Lord shall be thy confidence”. Proverbs 3:24-26.

Gorillas spend most of their days in bed, so they like to be comfortable and safe when they retire. When they arrive at a new place, one of the most important tasks before them is the construction of their sleep-ing quarters, which naturalists appropriately call a dormitory. The head of the family decides on the site for the dormitory. The location of the sleeping quarters is very important because of the danger from flooding that can accompany sudden equatorial rainstorms. The dormitory site chosen is usually in a grove of overhanging trees, often with a moss or vine canopy act-ing as a tent. The females and young scramble up the trees to make their beds. These consist of branches bent together and intertwined to make a platform. Vines and branches are actu-ally tied together in construction of the bed. In one such bed more than 24 complete knots were counted. On the platform, sticks, leaves, dry earth, vines, and moss form the mattress. Occasionally, a mother gorilla will make a small-er cot beside her for her infant.

A woman traveller who observed some gorilla beds said she would find them quite comfort-able. It is rather amusing to imagine gorillas sleeping, because they sleep on their backs with their arms crossed behind their heads. This is a favourite sleeping position of some people too. The head of the family almost always sleeps on the ground.

A West African medical doctor reported that every time he found a gorilla’s dormitory, he would lie down where the male had lain. From that point he found it was always possible to see the sleeping places of every one of the females. So the male on the ground always finds a place from which he can watch over his entire family. The female gorillas and the young could sleep in confidence, knowing they had a protector. How much more should we have confidence in God.

CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Farewell Mrs Webb and familyDuring the term Mrs Webb and her family made the decision to relocate back to Western Australia. They will be leaving us at the end of this week. I know we will really miss their happy, smiling faces, their friendship and their genuine care they have so freely shared while with us over the past two and a half years.

Mr Webb is taking an accounting position at Karalundi, an Aboriginal boarding school, run by the Adventist Church. Karalundi is looking forward to their return as the Webb family have previously ministered to this community.

While we farewell the Webb’s, we are blessed to welcome back Mrs Brenda Hancock, to full time teaching for the remainder of the year. Mrs Hancock is delighted to teach Year 4 for the remainder of the year as she taught many of the class in their first year of schooling!! Thank you Mrs Hancock:)

Yr 9/10 WeavingThe Year 9/10 DCT class has been working on some amazing woven textile pieces. They have created their own loom to weave their own wall hanging. Such awesome progress so far!

As you might know I am a big fan of Maggie Dent who is one of Australia’s most loved parenting authors, educators, parenting and resilience specialists and mother to four sons.

I came across her ABC podcasts over the weekend which are called Parental as Any-thing.

Maggie covers some great topics such as;

o How to discipline your child o All by myself-isolation as an only child or sole parento How to get your kids (and you) to stop fighting o How to work from home with kids o How to home school. Want clever kids? Get them to play outside o How to talk to kids about coronavirus and guide your family though it o Raising teens and how to help your child make friends just to name a few.

There are many other interesting topics that I’m sure you will find useful.

I hope that you all have a great break these holidays spending some time with your family and you have a great week.

All the best,

Venise Lang.
