Santuzza has been deserted by Turiddu, the local
‘Don Juan’. He is now courting Lola, who is married
to Alfio. When Santuzza pleads with him not to
leave her and save her from scandal, he accuses her
of spying on him. Lola arrives on her way to Mass
and flirts with Turridu, who pushes Santuzza
violently way and follows Lola into church.
Santuzza throws a curse after him and in her dispair,
tells Alfio about the affair between Lola and
Turiddu. Alfio swears revenge and after the Easter
Mass challenges Turiddu to a duel. Remorseful,
Turridu leaves Santuzza in the care of his mother
Mamma Lucia as he goes to face Alfio. Mama Lucia
and Santuzza wait to hear the result. The crowd
comes in crying that Turiddu has been killed by
Alfio. Santuzza faints into his mother’s arms.

A travelling theatre group is to present The troubles
of Pagliaccio in a village. Canio, who plays
Pagliaccio and is known for his jealousy and temper,
suspects his wife Nedda of being unfaithful. While
they are all preparing for the evening performance,
Tonio, another actor in the troup, finding Nedda
alone, declares his love for her. She rejects him and
when he tries to force himself on her, she strikes him
across the face with a whip. He leaves humiliated,
vowing revenge. Silvio, a villager who is Nedda's
lover, arrives and pleads with her to elope with him
after the performance and, alhough afraid, she
agrees. Tonio, who has been eavesdropping, tells
Canio but, despite his rage, Nedda refuses to reveal
the name of her lover. During the play, which closely
mirrors the real-life situation, Canio loses control
and asks Nedda again for her lover’s name. Nedda
tries to continue the play, but Canio accuses her of
bringing shame upon him. As the audience realises
that they are not acting Canio stabs Nedda. Silvio,
who has pushed his way to the front, cradling Nedda,
declares ‘The play is over!’
