NOTES From The Founder

My Contribution to Breast Cancer –

I Unexpectedly Saveda Life

ost people are becoming increasingly aware that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink adorns our newspapers, our grocery stores and our Internet. You’ll

notice the same pink this month on the Moms In Business website too. Pink may soon outshine the orange of Halloween when it comes to the symbolism of the month.

When it comes to causes like this, we donate, we walk, we fundraise for a great cause, and we hope that it’s working to save a life. Rarely do we get the opportunity to actually do something that saves a life that breast cancer could destroy.

Having successfully overcome breast cancer myself, I know one thing for sure. I had a choice. I could fight to survive or I could mentally and emotionally give up at any time. It’s hard some days not to wonder if the pain is all worth it in the end. I had a particularly painful bout every three weeks. In addition to the chemotherapy and the shot that makes your bones ache, I didn’t know I was especially sensitive to steroids. The steroids made the process incredibly painful for me. Imagine going through 24 hours of labor pains every three weeks for four months. That’s what it was like for me because my organs were spasming from the steroids. Despite all that and the fear of dying, I was not the one who was suffering the most, my family was — I had the power to live or die. They were helpless.

The hardest part of breast cancer for me was not cancer’s effect on me; it was cancer’s effect on my family. If I left this planet, they were still here – motherless, wifeless, sisterless, daughterless. Seeing their pain and fear was more excruciating than anything I was personally going through.

I recently found out that a dog named Patches had recently lost her mother to breast cancer. Patches was alone and stuck in her back yard as the family of the woman was trying to find out where to put her. They wanted a good home for her, but no one could seem to take her in. The poor girl was alone, in her back yard, for over ten weeks in the hot Las Vegas summer with a few friends and family members stopping by daily to give her water, food and a petting.

My daughter, who is a cat person, came home crying that we needed to save this dog. My daughter doesn’t do that. I listened and I agreed to meet the dog. It was when I met her that I found out her owner, Rosie, died of breast cancer. I knew at that news

that we were meant to be the new family for Patches.

She fits perfectly into the family. The love-bug of my life, my black lab Sabrina, gets along with Patches perfectly. They are like sisters, and there was an instant connection.

Sometimes we forget that a life or lives are devastated and the cancer victim is not the only life that could be lost.. The children of the breast cancer victims can become homeless or abused. Our animals could be euthanized, homeless, or abused.

This October, please go beyond giving money to breast cancer. Do something that positively and personally impacts the life of the family that grieves. Adopt an animal, or become a mentor, or Big Sister/Big Sister to a child, or just help a family who is going through the process of overcoming breast cancer by taking her children out for fun.

Make it personal. Make it meaningful. Money comes and goes, but the moments we have to make a personal impact, never go away.

Warmest Wishes,

Gina

Special Note To Rosie – Thank you for the new family member. We love her. Please be free to rest now.

The 2011 TOTSY Moms Shopping Trends Report conducted earlier this year by BSM Media showed the following insights about how moms shop during the holiday season:

u Toys and games were chosen as the most frequent gifts given to children from parents and other family members and friends, with apparel and electronics following closely behind.

u Moms surveyed said they typically spend the most money on year-end holiday gifts than any other holiday, and will continue to do so this year.

u 65 percent of moms ranked the fourth quarter holiday season as being the most stressful shopping occasion.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 22 million schools days are lost each year to the common cold alone.(1) As parents receive school supply lists, more and more teachers are requesting disinfecting wipes to help keep their classrooms germ free. In fact, along with washing hands, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends placing disinfecting wipes in classrooms, and encouraging students and staff to wipe down frequently-touched surfaces and objects before each use. That is why LYSOL is offering parents the opportunity to get a free canister of LYSOL wipes when you buy any two other LYSOL products.LYSOL is also extending its LYSOL Mission for Health into the classroom with its Blue Ribbon School Attendance Challenge. The program is designed to teach students healthy habits and strive for improved attendance. LYSOL is rewarding schools that demonstrate the best attendance rate and parent participation in the program during the month of November, 2011. A total of $25,000 in prizes is available.

On average, people dressing up for Halloween spend 61 days planning and preparing their costume. In fact, nearly two in ten (13 percent) will plan for Halloween a year or more before the big day. On the flip side, 20 percent of people wait until the very last minute to plan their costume, picking it out on the day of Halloween.

Halloween isn't just for people, pets are actually the ones getting pampered the most. To outfit their four-legged family member in the perfect Halloween look, pet owners will spend $59 on average.

While most parents (87 percent) plan to dress up their child this

Trends for Halloween 2011

Halloween, on average they plan to spend only $32 on their little

one's costume – much less than what they plan to spend on themselves ($52) or the family pet.

Consumers aren't just interested in finding the perfect Halloween costume, they also want to spookify their houses to celebrate the holiday. More than half of consumers (53 percent) plan to decorate their homes for Halloween, and most of those people (43 percent) will go all out decorating both inside and outside their abode.

In the Savers online survey 38 percent believe accessories are the most important factor in creating a unique Halloween costume, and a similar number (34 percent) say they're able to use their Halloween accessories or costumes throughout the year for other theme parties and events.

The zombies from AMC's "The Walking Dead" were named the best TV-inspired costumes (31 percent), followed by the sparkle and glamour of "Dancing with the Stars" (19 percent) and the sultry vampires from "True Blood" (17 percent). Pirates get a boost this year as adult respondents named "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" as their top big screen costume inspiration (36 percent), as well as for their kids' costumes (19 percent). Respondents also cited "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II" as another top choice for adults (11 percent) and kids (13 percent) this Halloween.

Nearly two-thirds of adults (65 percent) say they've dressed up for Halloween the last two to three years. And everyone seems to agree it's important to have a fresh look each Halloween – an overwhelming majority of adults (90 percent) and kids (93 percent) that dress up for the holiday sport a totally new costume every year.

-Reader users likely to both read and purchase more books than non-usersThe options keep changing and bookstores are starting to feel the pressure. One major chain closed

its doors for good last month while some of the others have rolled out their own e-Reader devices and are upgrading them regularly. Even The New York Times has changed the way it looks at bestsellers. It used to be just fiction and non-fiction; now it’s also print versus e-Reader. And this is for a good reason as one in six Americans (15%) uses an e-Reader device up from less than one in ten (8%) a year ago. Also, among those who do not have an e-Reader, one in six (15%) say they are likely to get an e-Reader device in the next six months. These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,183 adults surveyed online between July 11 and 18, 2011 by Harris Interactive. While some may lament the introduction of the e-Reader as a death knell for books, the opposite is probably true. First, those who have e-Readers do, in fact, read more. Overall, 16% of Americans read between 11 and 20 books a year with one in five reading 21 or more books in a year (20%). But, among those who have an e-Reader, one-third read 11-20 books a year (32%) and over one-quarter read 21 or more books in an average year (27%).

Moms Minutes

Fiction or Reality? Do School Shootings Have a Direct Link to Al-Queda?

E-Reader users are also more likely to buy books. One-third of Americans (32%) say they have not purchased any books in the past year compared to only 6% of e-Reader users who say the same. One in ten Americans purchased between 11 and 20 books (10%) or 21 or more books (9%) in the past year. Again, e-Reader users are more likely to have bought, or downloaded books, as 17% purchased between 11 and 20 and 17% purchased 21 or more books in the past year. One of the criticisms of e-Readers is that people who have them may download more books than they would traditionally purchase, but read at the same levels. So far this criticism is not holding true at all. Half of both e-Reader users (50% and non-users (51%) say they read the same amount as they did six months ago. However, while one-quarter of non e-Reader users (24%) say they are reading less than they did before (compared to just 8% of e-Reader users), over one-third of e-Reader users (36%) say they are reading more compared to just 16% of non-users.

This is a huge transition time for publishing companies and how they adapt will determine who is still standing ten years from now.

According to award-winning novelist and relative of Columbine shooting victim, Daniel Rohrbough, there is a direct link to school shootings and Al-Qaeda. “When I researched school shootings, more and more evidence pointed to how the Internet is being used to infiltrate, deceive, and recruit boys into the dark world of terrorism,” says Linda Rohrbough.Formerly a computer book author, Rohrbough discovered a link between school shootings and Al-Qaeda while searching for answers after her nephew was gunned down at Columbine. “My first inkling of the connection to Al-Qaeda was when I attended the Columbine memorial service. I recognized General Colin Powell at the center of the platform, in full military dress. He was never mentioned or introduced, and he never spoke. He was just there.” Powell is an expert on the Middle East, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and credited for successful execution of Operation Desert Storm, which expelled the Iraqi army from Kuwait.Further reports unveiled the Columbine shooters bragged theirs would be the first of many shootings. Also, the teenage

e

shooters low-level formatted the hard disk drives of their computers before heading out to kill. Rohrbough wanted to know, “How could they know other shootings would follow? And why erase their hard disk drives? What were they trying to hide?”Fortunately, in two cases, the authorities got to computers before the low-level format was complete. First, in a school shooting in Paris, and second, when a teenager in Florida flew his dad’s plane into a building. In both cases, e-mails traced back to Al-Qaeda operatives. Most recently, three teens in Louisiana were caught before shooting and are being held on conspiracy to commit terrorism charges.Rohrbough’s extensive research resulted in her new novel, The Prophetess One: At Risk, published on April 20th, 2011, the 12th anniversary of the Columbine shooting.“My heroine is pregnant, computer savvy, and uncovers that we are indeed, in a very different kind of war. One we can win by reclaiming the proper relationship men can have with their children, especially with sons,” says Rohrbough.

THE AMERICAN JOBS ACT What’s the Impact for Women and the Economy?

The American people understand that the economic crisis and the deep recession weren’t created overnight and won’t be solved overnight. The economic security of the middle class has been under attack for decades. That’s why President Obama believes we need to do more than just recover from this economic crisis – we need to rebuild the economy the American way, based on balance, fairness, and the same set of rules for everyone from Wall Street to Main Street. This is especially true in helping women get back to work, as employment growth for women has been slower than men during the recovery.

Today nearly two-thirds of women are breadwinners or cobreadwinners for their families, so it’s critical that any plan for recovery and job growth include opportunities for women. To create jobs for these women, and help women business owners expand, the President unveiled the American Jobs Act – nearly all of which is made up of ideas that have been supported by both Democrats and Republicans, and that Congress should pass right away to get the economy moving now.

u Preventing up to 280,000 teacher layoffs – keeping teachers in the classroom: The President’s plan will invest $30 billion to help prevent up to 280,000 teacher layoffs, along. If these layoffs were to occur, they would disproportionately impact women, who make up about 78% of pre-K- to 12 teachers.

u New investments will modernize and revitalize schools, communities, and infrastructure: The President is proposing investments that will modernize at least 35,000 schools, revitalize communities hardest-hit by foreclosures, and expand investments in roads, rail, transit, and airports – along with a commitment to create infrastructure employment opportunities for minorities, women, and socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.

u An extension of unemployment insurance that will prevent 2.6 million women from losing their benefits: The President is calling for an extension of unemployment insurance, which would prevent some of the 2.6 million American women who are currently receiving unemployment benefits from losing a crucial lifeline. This extension would be paired with reforms to help the program better serve the long-term unemployed – including the 2.8 million women who have been unemployed longer than six months.

u Supporting job training and successful subsidized employment approaches: The President’s plan would create a new Pathways Back to Work Initiative that would support successful subsidized employment programs and work-based job training that builds skills and connect participants to work. This Initiative could provide job opportunities and vital work-based training to hundreds of thousands of low-income women, many of whom are single mothers.

u Over 75 million women will benefit from the extension of the payroll tax cut. By extending the payroll tax cut next year, the President’s plan will help increase the paychecks of 77.9 million women in the workforce – providing them with more money to support their families and spend in their communities.

WHAT THE PLAN WILL DO?…Go to www.MomsVoteMatters.org to read the full list of what the plan will do, including pathways to work, workplace flexibility, more money in the purses of American women and more.

Latina Mom, Elisa All, is the founder of iParenting Media (www.iparenting.com), and currently president/CEO of 30Second Mobile. iParenting was founded in 1996 and was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2007. Elisa worked for Disney until 2009, and is now about to launch her next venture, 30Second Mobile, a mobile media company. (www.30secondmom.com).

GRB: Hi Elisa and thank you so much for sharing your amazing life and career with our readers. Let’s start with how many children do you have and tell us about them.

EA: I am grateful to have three incredible kids. My oldest was the inspiration for iParenting — I was pregnant with him when I developed the idea for the company. I also

have twin daughters. They’re all very active in sports and other activities, which keeps me very busy! All three are the inspiration for what I do personally and professionally.

GRB: What does your company do?

EA: iParenting consisted of a highly-respected network of more than 40 sites dedicated to parents, and a product review and awards program. We created content for national newsstand magazines, a newspaper column and radio show, and custom content for Fortune 500 clients. iParenting was recognized as “Best of the Web” by Newsweek, US News & World Report and The London Times, among others.

redefining content for mobile devices. Our goal is to provide “30Second tips for your mobile life, helping you stay in the know while on the go.”

GRB: Why did you go into this business/career?

EA: Aside from being an entrepreneur, I’m a professional journalist. So one of the first things that occurred to me when I became pregnant for the first time was, “Where’s the timely information about this new life experience?” Since there wasn’t a well-known general pregnancy magazine at the time, I decided to create one. PregnancyToday.com became one of the first websites for expectant moms, with in-depth articles, expert Q&A and more. It evolved into a network of more than 40 award-winning sites, an awards program, content for several magazines, a newspaper column and radio show. It was also acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2007, after which I worked for Disney for two years, running the iParenting division.

The inspiration for 30Second Mobile hit me when I realized that as a busy mom, I was accessing the Web from my Smartphone more than my computer. I saw that most of my friends were doing the same thing, but media and content had not yet evolved to keep up. I realized there was a significant opportunity to redefine content for mobile and reach busy consumers wherever they are, on their mobile devices.

GRB: What has been the single hardest part of being in this business/career? How did you deal with that?

EA: Certain parts of being a business owner are challenging - the pressure to make sure the business is always thriving, that employees are always taken care of, making sure nothing slips through the cracks, etc. I do little things to make sure I stay on top of everything - such as checking emails at night to get ahead of any issues that might hit in the morning. But the passion I have for my business supersedes the challenges and keeps me going.

GRB: What’s your greatest achievement (or what are you most proud of personally and professionally)?

EA: Like many moms, my greatest personal achievement is my children. They’re truly my inspiration for everything, and I’m so proud that they’re turning out to be really amazing

people. Professionally, while I’m proud of earning accolades such as “Best of the Web” and the accomplishment of building a business that was acquired by a

fantastic company like Disney, at the end of the day, what makes me most

proud about iParenting is the lives it touched, around the world, every day. I’ll

never forget emails sent from moms of all cultures, at all times of day and night, saying

thank you for a helpful article, or grateful for our supportive community. Knowing you have helped

someone by connecting and sharing information is an incredible feeling.

GRB: What’s on the horizon for you and your business?

EA: I’m focusing on the launch of my new mobile media brand, 30Second Mom: 30Second tips for your mobile life. A stream-based content platform tied into the leading social networks, 30Second Mom’s goal is to provide mobile moms with quick and helpful tips from other moms - each in about 30 seconds or less.

Elisa AllA Day in the Life

of Elisa All

Like so many moms, my life revolves around my children.

On a typical school day, we get up and have breakfast and coordinate about the day.

The dog is usually running around creating chaos, but we make sure everyone knows what commitments they have after school so they can be prepared. We pack lunches and get out the door.

After school drop-off, I may grab a cup of coffee before heading to meetings or jumping on conference calls and checking in with social media networks.

It’s go-go-go until school pick-up, where I can be found picking up kids and shuttling them to various after-school sports and activities.

While I at times feel more like a chauffeur than anything, we use the car time to catch up on how their day went, what homework needs to be done, etc.

Then it’s dinnertime. I can usually count on one of them to help make a salad, set the table, etc. After connecting over a meal, it’s all about homework. If they get it done in time, there’s a bit of downtime for playing a video game, taking a walk or watching a movie together. It’s a full day, and we’re ready to turn in.

I always check in on work before then, which helps set up the next day. Thank goodness for technology, which really helps keep it all organized!

GRB: How do you manage it all? (work/life balance tips, etc)

EA: Running a business while raising a family is a lot, but when you’re passionate about what you do, you make it work. I use my kids’ schedules as my guide. They come first, and the business fills in around them. But I get a lot of help from my Smartphone. I can’t imagine staying on task with my busy personal and professional schedule without the tools and apps I use on my mobile device.GRB: What advice do you have for other moms in business?

EA: Believe in yourself and trust your vision. The more confident you are about what you’re doing, the more others will believe in you. You are stronger than you know; so don’t give up on your dream. You can do this!

Tech Coast Angels (TCA), the nation’s largest angel investment network, today announced the formation of the Angel Syndication Network (ASN), an affiliation of angel investment groups across the U.S. that have banded together to provide entrepreneurs with more and larger financing rounds before leaving the angel system.

According to Richard Sudek, chairman of the TCA Syndication Committee, “ASN is a dynamic new opportunity for entrepreneurs. Previously, start-up companies might go to a single angel group to receive their initial financing, but when they required additional funds, they had to go through the same due diligence at other angel networks. Or they had to try to make the leap to venture capital, sometimes before they were ready. Now, these companies can start up with any of our ASN partners and have access to the funds and support of the other groups when they need it. They can take any on-ramp and access the same freeway.”

“The Angel Syndication Network will be an efficient means for those game-changing entrepreneurs who need to be focused on their businesses to raise funds from multiple angel groups with minimal incremental effort,” said Mike Napoli, TCA chairman. “With ASN, companies aren’t repeating all of the same money-raising steps over and over, and the ASN partners are able to see good deals brought to them by a lead investment partner that is familiar with the entrepreneur and has already agreed on financial terms. They will also be able to take advantage of the broader networking reach of the larger pool of investors. It’s a win-win.”

According to Dr. Ian Sobieski, chairperson, Band of Angels, “The ASN gives us the ability to fully fund more start-ups within a family of known, high-quality angel investors who have a track record of helping entrepreneurs with experienced mentorship as well as capital. We’re excited to be a founding partner in this network.”Entrepreneurs who wish to contact Tech Coast Angels about the Angel Syndication Network can find further information at www.techcoastangels.com.

“Given the dynamics of the industry, building a healthcare technology startup poses a lot of challenges,” said Sandbox Managing Director Nina Nashif, who founded Healthbox. “The market needs a platform that provides critical support for early-stage healthcare companies that are not yet ready for venture capital.”

Healthbox is now accepting applications, which will remain open on the website for approximately eight weeks. Additionally, Healthbox leaders and mentors will host networking events in September and October in key cities around the country – including San Francisco, San Diego, Minneapolis, Nashville, Boston, New York City and Chicago – in order to promote the program and encourage applications.

refinanced to historically low levels. And most companies in the S&P 500, an index of the largest companies in the country, are flush with cash reserves. That has been the most worrisome part of the recovery: businesses could have hired, they could have afforded to hire but they didn’t. Selling stocks even if they dip somewhat should provide an opportunity to buy shares that are worth more for less. If you are buying steadily, this should prove an advantage for those with time.

You: Turn off the television or change the channel. None of what you are hearing, none of the talking heads everyone is trotting out means anything. The politicians involved in the debate are saying little or nothing and in many respects, act like this is the first time such an event has ever happened. Personally, the President should simply invoke his right in the 14th amendment and raise it without Congress. Yes, it will cause an uproar and yes, it would be the right thing to do. But creating tension among the American people is not a solution to solving some of the nation’s biggest concerns. In the three years since the Great Recession began, you should have put all of your plan in place: reduced your personal debt, created a modicum of savings and in the process, increased your contributions to your retirement plans. If you haven’t, this will probably send the message again that your wealth is not what Washington thinks it is. You should be much more pliable and hopefully, just a tad smarter - or jaded.

Does the Debt Ceiling Vote Matter?

STANDOUT

As we have watched the slow slog towards August 2nd and the expiration of the debt ceiling,

there are a few things we should consider in advance of that date and a couple of additional thoughts in the days immediately following. Like most things,

the debt ceiling expiration date is mostly arbitrary, much like the turning of a new year or the end of a quarter. In other words, 08.02.11 means little to

the average person and in the days following, should not be of much concern.

Here’s why.

Borrowing: We have been in one of the most favorable borrowing environments since records began being kept. If you qualify for a loan, be it a home mortgage or other big ticket purchase, the date will not change your ability to borrow. It may cost you more but prudent borrowers should have already considered this eventuality prior to beginning their purchase. Interest rates may and probably should go up if an agreement isn’t reached. The phrase “lock-it-in” will be considered sage advice as it should be. On the flip side, there is little likelihood the seller of whatever big ticket item you are purchasing may just offer additional financial incentives to offset any increased borrowing cost.

Selling: An increase in interest rates would not benefit those who believe their homes are worth a certain amount. It would stymy the housing market, slow the sale of automobiles and create a situation that most retailers have been dealing with already: more saving than spending. While less spending will not get the economy moving and certainly won’t create more jobs, despite the argument in Congress that less spending has the opposite effect. We’ll just be stuck in neutral for longer than we had hoped. But not as long as many suggest we will.

Markets, Bonds: If you are a conservative investor with money in bonds, you are much smarter than the media gives you credit. Savvy bond investors ladder their holdings for just such an event and will probably fair well. Yes, the foreign investor might become a little more cautious and the next Treasury auction will be weaker than most hope it will be. But over the long-term, the real reason folks hold bonds, the effect will be offset as time moves on. Yet, if you are in bond mutual funds, you should have little to worry about as long as your holdings aren’t too much of your portfolio. If you’re older, cash might be a better place in the interim.

Markets, Stocks: More than one person has suggested getting into much safer investments before the 08.02.11 deadline. Cash is okay but if history tells us anything, this might be amongst the worst long-term decisions you could make. Most companies could borrow if they needed to no matter what happens. But why bother. Most of the corporate debt has been

No Publisher Needed

Cleveland-based marketing professional successfully uses crowdsourcing to eliminate the need for a traditional book contact and signing bonus

What if there was a way to raise money for the book you want to write without having to have a publisher? Jim Kukral did just that.

Jim went direct to his audience with the idea for a new series of books about how to build a business around a lifestyle on the Internet, http://www.businessaroundalifestyle.com. The campaign utilized crowdfunding to enlist his audience to pre-fund the book series, called “Business Around a Lifestyle.” (http://www.businessaroundalifestyle.com) Kukral created a series of monetary pledges ranging from $25, all the way up to $10,000 for sponsorships.

So far, he’s raised over $16,000 in seven days of this promotion.

“If a regular guy from Cleveland, Ohio can raise $16,000 in less than a week without a publisher to produce his book, why can’t you?” said Kukral, a noted keynote speaker and Web entrepreneur. “Everything else you need to get a great book done can be put together on your own from freelancers. Book covers, editing, proofing, etc. This model means you’re essentially pre-selling your book before you even write it, and that’s just part of the revolutionary changes coming to the publishing world. The walls are crumbling down, and aggressive and smart entrepreneurs are running through the gates to grab their share of self-publishing gold.”

According to Publisher’s Weekly, e-book sales rose 167% in June, to $80.2 million, at the 15 houses that reported figures to AAP’s monthly sales report and closed the first half of the year with sales up 161%, to $473.8 million.

The traditional publishing model used to work like this. You come up with the idea for a book. You hire an agent. You write the book and submit it to publishers. You get rejected or you get a book deal. They give you a signing bonus and they produce the book and send it out into the world.

Author Raises Over $16k in 7 Days for His New Book Series, Before He Even Writes Them!

What about the signing bonus? Isn’t that an important part of it all?

Mr. Kukral says you can make your own. “First off, unless you’re a successful author already, you’re not going to get a signing bonus, let alone a book contract. So it’s up to you to make your own. That’s what I did, before I even wrote the books. I’m not done yet either. I plan on raising $20,000 to $30,000 before it’s all over.”

If you’d like to launch your book or product like Jim did, but want more than just a one-woman show, we suggest you enter the Moms In Business Grant which uses the power of crowdfunding and amplifies it with a $10,000 bonus package.

Discovery Familia released the results of its informative Mom Study at the “Esa Soy Yo - Soy Latina” awards ceremony held Thursday, September 15 on Capitol Hill. This extensive study was in order to develop clearer insights into the evolving needs and expectations of the Hispanic Mom from healthcare, purchasing habits to education.

Latinas in the United States comprise over 48% of the Hispanic population and 20% of the projected 24 million women in the nation. This study surveyed over 1,000 moms, who self-identified as Hispanic, between 18 to 49 years of age with children age two to 18.

Some of the Study Highlights:

On Empowerment: Seeing her own personal achievement is not exclusive from being a great mother for the Hispanic mom. 82% say that one of their greatest goals is to be a successful career person. 76% want to graduate from college and 79% look to be an inspiration for her children. When she speaks about herself, the Hispanic mom says: “I am confident. I have

a positive self-image. I have control of my life.”

On Health: Hispanic women have misconceptions about health and diet according to the study. Obesity prevalence among pre-school aged children ranks high among Hispanic children at 18.5%. Almost half of Hispanic moms perceive their children to be at a healthy weight, while in fact when calculating their Body Mass Index they are actually overweight. While these moms are familiar with the food pyramid, less than 1 in 2 believes she has enough information on health and nutrition to help her make good choices about food and diet.

On Media: Hispanic women believe that Spanish TV has not been evolving with her. There are too many novelas. The Hispanic

mom would like to see more shows related to: Parenting (50%), Health and Nutrition (46%), Fitness (43%) and Do It Yourself (40%).

On America: 75% feel the U.S. has the best opportunities for her children and family. However, 44.6% feel that there is more racial tension now than five years ago and 54.6% are concerned about their husband or themselves losing their jobs.

On Culture: In addition to her desire for her children to get the best possible education, she is also planting cultural roots within her children with Spanish language books, radio and TV. 79% want their kids to be proud of being Hispanic and 74% feel it is important to be fluent in Spanish and maintain the Spanish language as a part of their culture.
