From the EditorI wanted to take this space and introduce myself to everyone. My name is Tricia Barrett, also known as Copeland and Baxter’s Mom. For the past five years Lee Hughes and I have been publishing this magazine and forming a community of Moms. I am very proud of what we have accomplished but as I continue this publication on my own, I wanted to share

how I feel about Moms in the Know and what I want it to be for our community.

Moms in the Know has always been about community. I believe in the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and I want Moms in the Know to be a resource in pulling together the families of our community so that we can all be “in the know”.

Moms In the Know is a compilation of parenting tips that work, great businesses that support Moms, and fun events for families to enjoy. I love sharing information that worked for me, and passing along what readers and friends have found to be helpful in getting through the struggles and successes that every mom faces every day.

The bigger our community of Moms and families the better! To that end, I have added a Facebook fan page, and you can also follow us on Twitter. I want your emails at [email protected] and would love to have you call me at 843-573-4846 and visit us on www.momsintheknow.com. Tell your friends about Moms in the Know, tell businesses you saw them in Mom in the Know, and share your questions as well as your tips. Please join us on Facebook™ and Twitter™, and add your voice to our village!

read to your child! Make it a habit: every night snuggle up and read together.

Having taught English for 20 years, I can tell you that students who love to read have an easier time in school, are better writers, and have stronger vocabularies. as a lifelong bookworm, I passionately believe that a love of reading is one of the most joy-giving, imagination–enhancing, world-enlarging gifts you will ever give your child. and as a mother, I have to point out that a child who is reading is quiet, safe, out of your hair--- and getting smarter with every page turned.

Start reading to your children when they are babies and continue even after they can read to themselves. Libraries and websites have lists of recommended books; here are the tried and true that have been met with the most love over the years from my 8 year old son and 3 year old daughter.

B O O K S F O r B a B I E S

Especially good for babies are books with sentence patterns that are repeated often enough that young children are able to predict their appearance. The ability to help with the reading gives the child a head start on learning to read.

• Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt Even vEry young children love this book and will participate in reading it. It is adorable to watch them smell the flowers and pat the bunny.

• The Big Red Barn, Goodnight Moon, and The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown These well-loved classics are available in board books that you will read over and over, and that your child will be able to recite with you. The Big red Barn is our all time favorite.

Top Ten Things you Can Do

• Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Teaches colors and animals in a fun format.

• We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen retells the familiar story with beautiful illustrations of a family outing.

• How Do Dinosauars Say Goodnight by Jane Yolen vivid, funny dinosaurs show how NOT to act while being put to bed.

• The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle all of Eric Carle’s books are beautiful and fun to read to small children; many are available as board books.

• Bear on a Bike by Stella Blackstone Brightly colored pictures, a variety of modes of transportation, and interesting destinations make this book a favorite.

B O O K S F O r P r E S C H O O L E r S

When your child gets a little older, introduce longer picture books with more words and more of a storyline. Think about books that teach (aBC books, counting books), but don’t neglect entertainment—children this age love to laugh at silly sounds, funny pictures, and absurd situations.

• Quilt Alphabet by Lesa Cline-Ransom Big beautiful illustrations help teach the aBC’s.

• Corduroy and A Pocket for Corduroy by Don Freeman Both my children have requested these books over and over.

• How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long (and other books in this series) an adventure that boys will especially love, with humor for parents, too.

• Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale by Mo Willems Every child who has a special “lovey” will connect with this book, and so will parents.

• Silly Sally by Audrey Wood Funny pictures and lots of rhyme and repetition make this book very engaging.

• A Splendid Friend, Indeed by Suzanne Bloom Big fat pictures and text—a quick , fun read.

• Who Loves Me? by Patricia MacLachlan a little girl is reassured by her cat that she is well loved.

• Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein Silly, funny poems accompanied by pen and ink drawings.

B O O K S T O r E a D a L O u D T O K - 2

after years of reading picture books, I thought it was SO exciting to get to move from books that can be read in one sitting (sometimes over and over and over again) to longer books that I read to my son over many nights. We looked forward to finding out what happened next, which gave us a new area of common interest, making for fun conversations. When

you feel that your child’s attention span is ready, go for some of our favorites. Start with books that have some pictures to focus their attention and keep their interest.

• My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannet This book and Gannet’s other dragon books provide the perfect transition to longer books. Chapters are short with lots of pictures, cool maps, and a compelling story.

• Dr. Dolittle by Hugh Lofting Short chapters and fun adventures keep children interested.

• Winnie the Pooh A. A. Milne and The House at Pooh Corner by A. A. Milne The bear before Disney got to him remains a lovable story to share.

• Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers (and other books in this series) Managable chapter lengths, delightfully absurd situations and very engaging characters. The book is better than the movie.

• Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl again, the book is better than the movie - fun to read aloud and teaches some nice lessons.

• The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White Both are great books to read aloud. For some reason my son was not as engaged by Charlotte’s Web. (also try Stuart Little).

• Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary (and anything else by this author) Truly, anything with Beverly Cleary’s name on it will be excellent. I read many aloud to my son; as his reading skill improved he began reading them to me. We were both entertained.

B O O K S F O r O L D E r C H I L D r E N

These are books that are great for reading aloud; more advanced readers will be able to handle them on their own.

• All of the Harry Potter books by J.K Rowling

• The Alchymist: Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott (and other books in this series) Fast paced, with time travel, historical characters and lots of magic. My son loves these books.

• Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield (and other books in this series) Three orphaned sisters work hard to support themselves and their caretakers by working as dancers and actors in post-war London.

• The Four Story Mistake by Elizabeth Enright (and other books in this series) The Melendy brothers and sisters continue their adventures when their family moves from their brownstone to live in the country.

• From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg Sister and brother decide to run away, camping out at the Metropolitan Museum of art.

Moms KnowFashion Tips for Moms

- There are two things to

remember: One, being stylish has nothing

to do with your size. It’s all about how you

accentuate your shape and how confident

you are. Two, you don’t have to spend loads

of money to be stylish. Learn what works

for you and you will save a lot.
