Children’s Corner

October 19th - The Feast Day of St Luke St Luke was a writer on one of the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. He is believed to have been born a Gentile in Antioch in Syria. He may have been born a slave but was then trained as a physician and he is in fact the Patron Saint of Surgeons and Physicians. He was very close to Paul and travelled to Rome with him converting Jews and pagans to Christianity and he stayed with him when Paul was imprisoned in Rome. It is in St Luke’s gospel that we hear the famous story of the Good Samaritan. !

Harvest Festival October is the month we celebrate Harvest Festival. Harvest comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Haerfest meaning Autumn. It then came to refer to the season for gathering in the crops. The modern tradition of celebrating harvest in church began in 1843 when the Reverend Robert Walker invited parishioners to a special service of Thanksgiving at his church in

Morwenstow, Cornwall. It was made even more popular by Victorian hymns such as “We plough the fields and scatter” and “All Things Bright and Beautiful” which we still sing today. We carry on the tradition today of decorating our churches with home grown produce. Nowadays it is also very common at Harvest Festivals for congregations to bring in various gifts of food and produce which is then shared out amongst those less fortunate in the community.
