MeditateMeditation looks different for everyone but if you are new to the practice there are a few apps that might be able to help you discover what’s right for you. Both Calm and Headspace are popular choices and take you through a number of guided meditations alongside sleep stories. Pop in your headphones and stroll along the beach for an added sense of relaxation.

BreatheBreathing is probably the most natural and instinctive thing we do, but it’s also one of the things that is on autopilot and we rarely stop to think about it. Focusing on your breath can be a really effective way to slow down and appreciate the moment. Slowly inhale and exhale while placing one hand on your stomach and one hand on your chest.

WalkWalking is one of the best ways to not only slow down and appreciate the moment, but also to appreciate the area you live in. West Cliff Mansions is ideally located for exploring Bournemouth on foot. Head to the clifftop, wander through the park and down to the beachfront, all the while focusing on your steps to heighten awareness and connection to the present moment.

ObserveSlow down and take in your surroundings. Leave your smartphone inside, sit outside and observe life. Watch the cars weave in and out of the streets, look for local landmarks, concentrate on the coastline; simply observing what’s around you is a fantastic way to pause and reset.

Vitamin sea boost

Let’s dive in...

Living at West Cliff Mansions means you are close to one of the most remarkable coastlines in the country. Bournemouth beach is well-known for its silky smooth sand and stunning scenery, and it’s a popular destination for holidaymakers, not just from the UK, but from all over the world. During the last year Bournemouth has also become a wellbeing destination, as more and more people begin to explore the health benefits of living by the sea and swimming in cold water.

The link between our oceans, rivers and waterways and our overall wellbeing is not a new concept; Marine biologist, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, has been researching the theory since 2013. His research into the Blue Mind movement

reveals a whole host of health benefits for both the body and mind when living near water. There is lots of other research to support this; Rightmove’s Happy at Home index in 2020 found that on average people are generally happier when living in coastal locations.

So what are the wellbeing benefits of living near the ocean? And why is cold water swimming becoming increasingly popular?

We explore the health benefits of living by the sea.

Creates communityThere’s no doubt that cold water creates community, with an array of swimming groups, surfing and paddleboarding tribes to join. Bournemouth has a number of watersports groups and training centres, all designed to help people try out a new sport or activity that’s connected to the sea.

Provides purposeFeeling connected to the natural world can improve our sense of purpose and overall wellbeing. When worked into a daily routine, whether alone or with groups of friends, walking on the beach and/or diving into the sea can help you maintain focus and appreciate your surroundings.

Increases energy levels Lots of people call upon cold water immersion to clear their minds and set them up for the day. The science suggests that the shock of the water increases your alertness, which in turn makes you feel revitalised and refreshed.

Reduces cortisol levels Being near water can reduce your cortisol levels, which is the hormone responsible for stress. Hearing the ebb and flow of water and watching waves move up and down can be incredibly calming and the movement is thought to reduce stress and anxiety and place us in a ‘mildly meditative state’.

Mood booster When diving into icy waters, the body releases a host of chemicals including serotonin, otherwise known as the happy hormone. It does this to fight off the chill, but after being in the water for even just a few seconds the body begins to acclimatise and releases the feel good factor.

Reduces inflammationA study by the University of Portsmouth and Royal Sussex County Hospital found that cold water swimmers’ stress and inflammatory responses were lower and they developed fewer colds and infections than their partners.

Matthew Salter, Associate Director at HGP

Matthew Salter, Associate Director at HGP (the architects behind West Cliff Mansions), shares the detail in creating a new coastal community and bringing the vision to life.

“Our proposal reflects on the conservation area setting in a contemporary manner, creating a new garden villa for the town of Bournemouth.

The scheme references the prevalent villa typology of the West Cliff and Poole Hill conservation area as a springboard for putting forward a modern vernacular expression. Undertaking a thorough character analysis of the site and its wider grain, we designed a building that subtly references its context, creating a new interpretation of local building culture. The villa sits centred on the site, discreetly screened from street view behind a planted boundary. We adopted a sensitive approach, recognising the value of the mature trees on site and preserving these to

create an enhanced landscape setting. These play a role in giving privacy, as well as lending residents an optimum outdoor space that goes a long way towards promoting wellness. Within this landscape, a fluent vocabulary of tall and slender Victorian windows emerges. Horizontal banding and corner features add a sense of robustness to the building’s expression, holding the building together as a continuous, monolithic ensemble. The technical resolution of service facilities such as bike storage incorporated within the building envelope further adds to this clean articulation. Although it stands as a strong, autonomous figure, the distinct character of the block engages with the landscape around it via external terraces. These provide a considered amenity space for residents when they choose to sit outside. On colder days, the gentle, rendered projecting bay windows can immerse them further into the landscape from the comfort of being indoors.”

Picture it: instead of waking up to a busy commute you wake up to a relaxed stroll. At 6am your feet don’t hit the platform, they hit the sand. You feel the crunch beneath your toes as you prepare to dive in and ‘seas’ the day. Cold water dips have become your favourite pre-coffee ritual. The blissful sound of birdsong has replaced the

screeching sound of car horns (if only for a short while before you let the day in). You spot the same friendly faces and exchange kind words before retreating to your residence, and that is when you realise; this is more than a place to call home, this is where you belong.

Amber Fidler, Founder of the Yoga Lounge in Bournemouth shares her top five tips on how to live in the moment:

1. Don’t put pressure on yourself to ‘be in themoment’, it has to feel right.

2. Put down your phone, even just for ten minutesat a time as that can really help quieten thedistractions.

3. Remember that the thing you have to do, whether it’s work or a to do list, it’s going to bethere later so give yourself permission to stop fora minute.

4. Appreciate what’s in front of you - you don’thave to be doing anything special or particularlyunique, it could just be sitting with a nice cup oftea looking at the ocean.

5. Learn to take pleasure in the small things.

Top 5mindfulness tips

“We do forget to be present. We’re always projecting or reflecting and rarely take the time to stop and focus on the moment. But it’s so important - there’s a lot of pleasure to be taken in what you’re doing right now and you’ll never get that moment back.”

Bournemouth is the ideal place to slow down and live in the moment. Its stunning coastal location and close-knit community make it a highly sought-after destination for those searching for the perfect balance. When it comes to slowing down and exploring the community there are so many options right here on your doorstep; a sunset dog walk, a sunrise surf, or why not try a virtual Vinyasa?

Bournemouth has a wonderful Yoga community, says Amber Fidley, Founder of the Yoga Lounge. In this exclusive interview she tells us more about the local community and shares some of her tips on how to stay grounded in the present:

“I started practicing Yoga in 2007. I was living in London and was a bit of a gym bunny. I just assumed that to be healthy I had to work hard in the gym - I didn’t have time to sit and relax; it was all about getting in, getting my heart rate up and getting on with the day. But then a friend introduced me to Bikram Yoga. I did a 30-day trial and it was transformational - it was hard work, hot, sweaty and got my cardiovascular system going. That’s when I realised Yoga can be a fantastic workout,

and unlike the gym, it works with the body. It really helped not only my physical ability but my mental state - the practice had such a profoundimpact on me I wanted to share itwith as many people as possible, which is when I did my teachertraining so I could look at startingmy own studio.

I wanted to get out of London and live more in the moment, so started looking at seaside locations. I had lived in Sydney before and found Bournemouth offered a really similar lifestyle; amazing beaches, vibrancy and energy, an active way of life, a focus on wellbeing and a real get up and go vibe (but a lot more chilled out than London). When I did my demographic research here I found that 45% of the population are young, working professionals. Of course there’s a real mix here of people who have retired, students etc. and it’s because Bournemouth has a bit of everything.

I first opened as Bikram Yoga in 2012 and rebranded in 2017 as the Yoga Lounge. We offer everything from hot Vinyasa Yoga classes to aerial Yoga sessions. Last year, like everyone, we were forced to innovate and we introduced an online subscription. Now members have the option

to come into the studio or stream classes online, we have about 30 classes a week.

My mission was always to provide a welcoming, non-judgemental environment for anybody to come and do Yoga. Lots of people have this interpretation that to do Yoga you have to be into tree hugging and herbal tea drinking, but that’s not true. It’s for everyone. I want people of any age, size, and fitness level to come and experience how invaluable it can be. We’re all so busy and often lead stressful, hectic lives - Yoga can provide you with clarity and the space to take time out and still the mind.”

Photographic credit: Rene August & Form and Story

Being born and raised in London, I wanted somewhere that could offer the vibrancy of a city but a more relaxed setting. Bournemouth has the perfect balance.

Are you a maker or creator? Then you’re in the right place - the town has a strong entrepreneurial spirit and is brimming with inspiration. We caught up with Jo, the founder of South Coast Makers Market, who tells us all about the creative community here:

How was South Coast Makers Market created?

It came about because I’m a Maker and I couldn’t find the type of markets in Bournemouth that I was used to trading out of in London and Bristol and Frome. I was keen to set something up in my hometown and so hired my old school hall in Boscombe to run the first market. I thought it was just going to be a Christmas Market but the support was so big at that first event that it soon rolled into monthly markets, pop-up shops, a local loyalty card, an online curated directory and courses and membership starting soon.

What’s the purpose and core ambition of the market?

The purpose is to provide Makers with a platform to showcase and sell their work at a fun, social, family friendly local market. It’s also there to highlight the work of local good causes, to promote shopping locally and to have a social too. We try our hardest to be plastic free at every market too.

What can visitors expect?

The market is a mixture of food and drink such as locally roasted coffee, local breweries, honey and food producers alongside a wide selection of craft including Makers of ceramics, jewellery, prints, interior design, woodwork, and clothing. It’s an indoor and outdoor market. We have street food vans and a wide range of food available too.
