    Q.1 Define the following

    1. Factor of safety

    2. Poisons ratio

    3. True stress and principle of superposition

    4. Ductility

    5. Youngs modulus/Modulus of elasticity and Modulus of rigidity

    Proof stress

    10.Elastic limit

Q.2 Sketch the typical stress strain curve for aluminium, copper, cast iron, mild steel, high

    carbon steel [6M]

Q.3 Explain any 7 mechanical properties of materials [7M]

Q.4 A bar of uniform thicknesst tapers uniformly from width of b1 at one end to b2 at

other end, in a length of L. Find the expression for the change in the length of the bar when

subjected to axial force P. [8M]

Q.5 Derive expression for extension of a uniformly tapering circular bar [8M]

    explain salient points [06M]

Q.7 Mention the assumptions made in theory of simple stress and strain and derive the

    equation dl=PL/AE [06M]

Q.8 Derive an expression for extension in a bar of uniform c/s fixed at one end and

suspended vertically, due to self weight. [07M]

    PROBLEMS

Q.1 A vertical circular steel bar of length 3 fixed at both ends is loaded at intermediate

sections by forces W and 2 W as shown in fig.1. Determine the end reactions if W=1.5KN

    [08M]

Q.2 A brass bar having c/s area 300mm2 is subjected to axial force shown in fig 2. Find

    total elongation of a bar E=84GPa. [10M]
