POTE’S NOTES Dear Nobles and Ladies. The last month Lady Janet and I have been attend-ing Potentate’s Balls at Ararat in Kansas City, Arab in Topeka, and Sesostris in Lincoln. We are very blessed to have great counterparts. It’s always a joy to have the opportunity to visits other temples. The Apple Blossom parade was attended well by Moila. It was a beautiful day for a parade! We are

looking forward to the parade season and invite all Nobles to come out! We have had several meetings in the process of planning for the Shriners Hospital Golf Tournament. This will be held June 23rd. Hope to have a full course. This is for a great cause. If you are interested in giving your time please contact the office. All help is greatly appreciated. Hope to see you all soon. Yours in faith, Ill. Sir Mark Morgan

From the Desk of Your Chief Rabban

Lessons learned along the way…

In the time since Lady Beth and I have been a part of the Moila Divan we have had the opportunity to travel near and far

while representing this great organization. As of this writing, Lady Beth and I have been to 6 Potentate’s balls and 3 cir-

cuses in 2018 and I can honestly say, I have learned something at each event.

It is always good to sit down with Nobles and Ladies from other Shrines and hear what they have going on, what worked

and what did not. The creativity across Shrinedom is incredible! Events that work in some places flop in others and visa

versa. Some events look like an obvious winner and fall flat while other times something that didn’t seem to be big goes

over gang busters! It’s crazy!

So, you may be asking “where is the lesson in that?” Well, the lesson is TRY EVERYTHING! We may not know what

will work ahead of time but we know if we do nothing we gain nothing. An example of this can be seen in our Circus vol-

unteers this past Circus. The turnout was better than ever and we saw some first timers there that had fun and will be

back. That’s great!!

What changed? We communicated with them. We initiated a call to them individually to let them know of the need for

volunteers. The response was outstanding and shows that our members care and want to be involved. Thank you to our

office staff for making the calls and most of all Thank You to all who volunteered!

Along the lines of TRY EVERYTHING, We want to hear your ideas! Even if you have been told NO in the past, ask again! Imperial has made numerous changes to what is allowed and even encouraged for individual Shrines to do. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Remember, Your Divan works for YOU! Tell us what you want to see.

Walk For Love Update We had a great turn out for the event with 75 making the walk through the East Hills shopping center. Cowboy Rex Strayer did a great job as always as our MC and I want to extend a special thanks to Ryan Smith for shar-ing his story! Ryan has agreed to help put this event together for next year and will no doubt be a welcome addition to the W4L committee! Thanks to everyone that came out or donated! Lastly I would like to take a moment to acknowledge all the

ladies in the Shrine! They don’t get the spotlight very often

but are very deserving of our praise. One shining example

of this is Moila’s very own Needles group which celebrated 74

years of contributing to this great philanthropy. Great job

Ladies and congratulations on 74 years! A fine example of

Shrine Ladies in action!

Fraternally yours with Best Wishes, Bill Pease, Chief Rabban 2018

HOT SAND BUGS

Greetings to all Nobles and Ladies from the Hot Sand Bugs. The Spring Bug

Campout was held April 20 through April 22 at Mozingo Lake. The weekend was

filled with a golf outing, fishing, wonderful food and a trip to a local winery.

A good time was had by all in attendance.

We would like to thank Ill Sir. Ken Dunlap and Lady Wylene who came up

Saturday for the golf outing and dinner. Ill Sir Dunlap paired with Jay Flinn to take

on the field in the golf outing; but Ill Sir Dan Baker, Ill Sir Mark Crawford, Mike

Caton and Jim Edwards carried the day. Jim Edwards came a putter width from

a hole in one on the 11th hole! Ill. Sir. Bob Couldry caught the largest fish of the

weekend with a Large Mouth Bass going at least six pounds.

Members of the Hot Sand Bugs attended Brotherhood Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M.,

for their regular meeting. Ill Sir and R.: W.: Bob Couldry arranged the evening.

Bugs Ill. Sir. Couldry, Ill. Sir Mark Young, Shelby Pankau, Kevin Lilly, Charles

Baskins and Nobles Jack and Joe Willis were in attendance. At the Lodge

meeting, assistance for the Charity-Zeredatha Lodge Special Olympics event was

requested and Ill. Sir, Bob Couldry , Shelby Pankau and Kevin Lilly assisted in that event.

This year Cinco de Mayo, marked the beginning of the 2018 Parade Season with the annual Apple Blossom Parade. Pa-

rade Director, Jay Flinn, began his 6th year of marshalling the troops. The Bugs came out in force with twelve Bugs participat-

ing in the Parade. After the Parade, the Bugs continued the Kentucky Derby Party tradition, started by Ill. Sir Dan Baker and

Lady Marilyn. The Unit was hosted by Ill. Sir. Mark Crawford and Lady Nancy at the Bison Bar. Bow Ties, Big Hats and Mint

Julips were plentiful.

As the parade season is getting ramped up don’t forget any Noble who wants to participate in any parade can always

find a seat with one of the Hot Sand Bugs. Just check the Moila website for details and a list of parades, and come join us.

Many of you may have heard that the Hot Sand Bug’s fiftieth anniversary celebration was postponed until later in the

summer. We hated to postpone this event but as the status of the Temple was unknown, it was really the only option. Stay

tuned, there will be more information to follow about the rescheduled date.

FROM THE TREASURER

Construction is finally slated to begin June 11th! You will see some big changes and updates at Moila. GreatLIFE will be construct-ing the fitness center on the second floor and the Ballroom, Tap Room, and Club Moila will get updates. We will make sure that everyone knows when it is finished and ready to put into use!

Let’s stop talking about the building and focus on the people. Shari Dunlap has done a great job in contacting Nobles who were suspended and who have not paid their dues yet this year. To date, we have reinstated 25 Nobles and we have about 120 on the delinquent list. If you want to help making some phone calls, we need the help.

WE ALL NEED TO RECRUIT! When was the last time you signed a petition? When was the last time you went to your Lodge? Look around you and convince a friend that he would be a good Mason and then explain that all the doors to the Masonic Family open wide to every Master Mason. But, WE ALL CAN RECRUIT!

Ole Tymers Greetings all, Wow, what a way to kick off the new year, with a very successful Circus!! We had great crowds, good revenue results, a lot of work, accompanied by a lot of fun! Thanks to the hospitality crew, for another GREAT job. One of the high-lights of this three day event, for us Shriners & La-dies. Thanks to our Members & all the Ladies, for all their help manning the ticket gates. Really appreciate all you efforts! Special Thanks to Leland Daise & Wayne Nold for helping with keeping everything running smoothly. Thanks to the Temple for the very nice Circus Appreciation Dinner. The food was great. Would have been nice if we had more folks show up for this event. We had a good turn-out for our first Unit meeting of the year. We are moving our monthly meet-ing to the second Thursday of the month, due to the Temple being dark on Mondays. Hey folks, what a way to kick off the new parade season! We had (12) parade cars & (10) of our Ladies. One of the best showings in a long time. GREAT JOB GUYS!! Was great to have some of our newer members present, Jerry Thornton, Doug & Margie Pohl & our newest mem-bers, Kim Evans & Lady Myra. We all are looking forward to a great year. We continue to keep Terry & Donna Imlay, in our thoughts & prayers, due to their continued health issues. Also, would like to keep our Honorary Members in our thoughts, Everett (1987) & Jane Powell & Earl (1974) & Evelyn Furst. A special tribute to our Ladies, of passed members: JoAnne Bryan, Alyce DuCoing, Joan Smith, Kay Stanton, Thelma Taylor, & Carolyn Woods. Well all for now, until next time, filling in for Reporter Ernie Frye --- Yours in the Faith, Bob Nichols.

KIM & MYRA EVANS TRAVEL TO MEXICO CITY HOSPITAL

February Lady Myra and I traveled to Mexico City to see the Shriners Hospital. We had contacted the PR department and set up a tour with Adriana Marcin. Lady Myra and I arrived by cab a few minutes early and found a packed lobby in a very clean hospital. Adriana started by telling us it was busy like this most days. There were several screening clinics the day we were there. We toured some of the outpatient areas seeing the Physical and Occupational therapy spaces. We saw where prosthesis and orthotics are made and housed and were told they made about 300 orthotics a month, 25 prosthetics a month and arranged about 5 wheelchair modifications a month. The wheelchairs are mostly for cerebral palsy patients. We also toured the new gait lab, a huge space with sophisticated equipment to map a child's gait so as to allow doc-tors and therapists to better diagnose and treat the child. (The therapist told us a doctor from Chicago donated money for the lab with his only request that a photo of the Virgin Mary be on the wall). The lab was also brightly decorated with kid-friendly characters. Next we toured the inpatient areas. There were two wings, one for boys and one for girls. Adriana told us there were 80 beds and they averaged 60 inpatients. With no HIPAA regulations in Mexico we were able to visit with patients. Adria-na informed us she was taking an English class to communicate better with visitors but she was a great translator. Many of the patients had traveled with one parent for many hours to get to the hospital. We saw a couple children that had curvature of the spine and were wearing halos that were attached to a stand via a rod. They were to be at the hos-pital for 2-3 months. The hospital provides special activities and tutoring for these children. We also visited with several children that had come for surgery the following day. Adriana said there were an average of 25 surgeries a day. In addition to the 22 orthopedic surgeons on staff, the hospital provides neurological services, dental services and does screenings for burn patients. The gait lab therapist liked Lady Myra's LOVE Shriner shirt so much that Myra literally gave her the shirt off her back-- luckily I had purchased a polo shirt from the gift shop so Myra had something to wear back to the hotel. It was a great week but the highlight was meeting many patients and families that are being helped by Shriners. Q-club can also be applauded for their donations to Shriners Hospital for Children Mexico City transportation fund as many children and their parents travel from long distances to arrive at Mexico City Hospital. If you have any questions or comments about Shriners Hospitals feel free to contact Moila's Hospital representatives Dan Baker, Gene Davenport or Kim Evans.
