POTE’S NOTES DEAR NOBLES AND LADIES: I HOPE YOU ALL ARE WELL AND SAFE. THIS HAS BEEN A TERRIBLE VIRUS AND HAS CAUSED MANY TO BE SICK AND MANY TO LOSE THEIR LIVES. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF OUR FIRST RESPONDERS, DOCTORS AND NURSES AND ALL OF OUR HEALTH PROFES-SIONALS FOR THEIR TIRELESS WORK IN FIGHTING THIS TERRIBLE PANDEMIC. IF YOU ARE LIKE ME YOU ARE REALLY SICK OF SPENDING TIME IN “SOLITARY CONFINEMENT”, AS I LIKE TO SAY, BUT I KNOW WITH EVERY-ONE’S HELP AND GOD’S HELP WE WILL COME THROUGH THIS. MOST ALL OF OUR SHRINE ACTIVITIES HAVE EITHER BEEN CANCELLED OR POSTPONED. FOR MOILA, WE HAD TO MAKE THE VERY, VERY, VERY HARD, LAST MINUTE DECISION TO

CANCEL OUR CIRCUS THIS YEAR. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF OUR NOBLES, SPONSORS, ADVERTISERS AND THE TICKET BUYING PUBLIC WHO HAVE DONAT-ED THEIR TICKET PRICES BACK TO MOILA. THIS HAS HELPED GREATLY AND IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. WE CURRENTLY HAVE A SMALL LOSS ON THE CIRCUS WITH A FEW REFUNDS YET TO BE MADE. BUT REMEMBER WE LOST AROUND $80,000 TO $90,000 PROFIT ON OUR CIRCUS THAT GOES TO OUR ANNUAL BUDG-ET. SO WHEN THIS THING TURNS AROUND, WE WILL NEED ALL OF YOUR SUP-PORT AND HELP TO KEEP US GOING IN THE FUTURE, AND ONE WAY WILL BE TO BRING IN NEW MEMBERS AND HELP WITH FUTURE EVENTS. WE ALSO HAD TO POSTPONE OUR ANNUAL SHRINERS HOSPITAL GOLF TOURNA-MENT, BUT WE ARE HOPING TO HAVE IT IN THE FALL. WE HAD TO CANCEL OUR MAY CEREMONIAL, AS WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE GROUP MEETINGS AND THE BLUE LODGES ARE ALSO SHUT DOWN. HOPEFULLY WE WILL BE ABLE TO HAVE OUR FALL CEREMONIAL IN NOVEMBER AND WE NEED YOUR HELP TO BRING IN NEW MEMBERS. WE HAVE RESCHEDULED THE WALK FOR LOVE THAT WAS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 13TH TO AUGUST 15TH. AGAIN WE NEED YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT. AS MANY OF YOU KNOW THE IMPERIAL SHRINE CONVENTION, WHICH WAS TO BE HELD IN KANSAS CITY IN JULY, AS BEEN CANCELLED. AT THIS POINT WE ARE STILL NOT ABLE TO HAVE TEMPLE MEETINGS, BUT HOPE WE CAN VERY SOON. MOST OF OUR TEMPLE BUILDING IS CLOSED STILL AS OF MAY 5th--GREAT LIFE HAS REOPENED THE GOLF COURSE ON A LIMITED BASIS AND, HOPEFULLY, WILL GET THE REST OF THE SERVICES GOING AGAIN SOON. HOWEVER, THE TEMPLE OFFICE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS I WRITE THIS ARTICLE. WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT PARADE SEASON AND HOPE TO BE ABLE TO PA-RADE. PLEASE LOOK AT THE MOILA WEBSITE AND CHECK OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR INFORMATION. I HAVE BEEN ASKED ABOUT UNITS AND CLUBS MEETING, AND I DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM IF THE UNITS AND CLUBS MEET (OTHER THAN OUR BUILDING IS CLOSED SO THEY WOULD HAVE TO MEET ELSEWHERE FOR NOW) AS LONG AS THEY FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING SET OUT BY CITY AND STATE. PLEASE KEEP SAFE AND WHEN THIS IS OVER LET'S HAVE A BIG GET TOGETHER AND ENJOY EACH OTHER’S COMPANY, AND LET’S START OVER BEING KIND TO OUR FRIENDS AND OUR ENEMIES AND COME TOGETHER FOR THE SHRINE AND OUR KIDS IN OUR HOSPITALS. THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING IN A GREAT FRATERNITY, YOURS IN THE FAITH, ILL. SIR DAN BAKER

From Your High Priest and Prophet

Greetings Nobles, I hope this finds you all in good health and spirits. To say that this last several weeks has been difficult and trying would be an un-derstatement, but I believe that we are moving ahead and in the right direction. As you are all aware, all Masonic/Shrine events so far have either been canceled or postponed for the time being, including for the first time in our history, our Imperial Shrine ses-sion. These decisions were not made lightly but with a great deal of thought for the well-being of our members and our families. However, by following the social distancing and health care practices that have been established, hopefully, we will soon be able to reopen our Lodges and our Shrine Centers and enjoy the Masonic friendship and brotherly love that we have come to know over time. We are hoping to be able to hold our June Temple meeting on its regularly scheduled time and date. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for any and all changes and updates to functions and scheduled events by reading your “Moila E-Mail Extras”. Please remember to continue to practice the social distancing and health practices that have been set forth by our medical care providers and the city council as these are critical for our health and well-being, as well as our ability to attend our meetings and be able to visit with those who have come to mean so much to us. Also, I encourage all who attend any of our functions to wear their “PPE” face masks if they are desirous of doing so. Also, I would like to encourage each and every one to pick up the tele-phone and call and check on those friends and family members whom we are not yet able to physically see and visit with. Let them know you are thinking of them and you are concerned about them and their well-being. We have already scheduled a couple of Hospital runs towards the end of May which means that “our kids” will be able to receive the care they need from fantastic Dr’s and staff at our St. Louis hospital. If anyone has any ideas about forming a new club or unit, or reactivating an old one, please contact me or any Divan member and let’s discuss it and see if we can make it happen. Clubs are a great idea since you can belong to more than one and continue to be an active member of your unit. I’m not yet sure what this parade season will bring considering social distancing guidelines, but wouldn’t it be great to see our Temple represented in all of these local parades as in years past. I hear people say that you can’t live in the past and things aren’t like they used to be, but there are several things from the past that are so fun to see and fun to be a part of. Let’s resurrect those things and keep them alive for our children and grandchildren. Let’s make our parades awe-some like they were when we were young. I know there are many of you who would like to see the fun things we used to do being done again. There is a very simple way to make it happen--participate! Let’s all get together and have a fun time with our family and friends at our Beautiful Temple. Let’s have a get together on the patio for dinner and a drink. Let’s all get together for our Wednesday night Mix and Mingle gatherings. Hopefully we will be having our Family Fun Day in July, bring your family, your children and grandchildren enjoy some cake and ice cream and a good old fashioned cake walk for the kids, let them enjoy a ride in a Hot Sand Bug and watch their faces light up along with an amaz-ing fireworks display. We have several fantastic traditions at Moila, let’s keep them alive. Let us continue to enjoy the best of our past as we continue to move forward and let’s give our children and grandchildren something to look back on one day and say “I remember going to Moila and having so much fun with my Dad and Mom or my Grandparents, I want my children to experience those things too”. It can happen, it can be a reality, the answer is really not that complicated, all you have to do to make it happen is PARTICI-PATE. Until next time, Brothers be safe, take care, have fun, and be an active member and participate. May God continue to bless and be with you all, yours in the faith. Douglas D. Plowman

LEGION OF HONOR

I hope all of this coronavirus is going to be behind us soon and we can start with a few meetings to make some plans. From what I have read in the Sunday paper, they are going to try to have the Apple Blossom Parade in late May or early June. This parade was started in 1926. We have the Legion of Honor trailer looking good (new paint and seats) with this parade in mind. The trailer will be available for the Divan and Legion of Honor members to ride on this year. We are planning for our regular stated LOH meeting on June 25, 2020, for our members and their ladies. We will have a catered meal. Please make reservations with Jerry Euler at 816-261-3159. FROM YOUR CHIEF RABBAN “Elevated to a higher Dignity and Honor” Greetings from the Chief Rabban’s office. I sincerely hope that every-one’s experience with the Covid-19 Pandemic is merely one of inconven-ience and that no serious health or financial problems are burdening you. Shortly before this all began several improvements were made and ap-proved for the membership experience to be a merit system based on points and more aligned to the participation at Moila and Shrine and Masonic events. This is a very great program for our members and should also help with incentives to bring in new members. We were going to kick it off at the circus to track participation at that event. Unfortunately, we as a Board of Directors felt the pressure and the need to cancel the circus at the last minute to make sure there were no surprises with the virus at one of our most important public events of the year in St. Joseph. The safety of our members and guests was paramount to our decision to make sure there would be no claims against Moila. We were also informed that the Imperial Shrine Session in Kansas City was cancelled. This is very unfortunate as we were very ex-cited about it being so close to home, and the ability for Nobles and Ladies who generally would not attend would have the ability to see some of the great things that happen at a national session. Ill. Sir Dan Baker and myself listened in on a multiple temple Zoom call that addressed some of the things that other temples are doing during this time frame. At the time of this writing no definitive plans have been announced as to when the Temple, restaurant or the full normal operations will resume. Other than I am happy for the golfers that the course is open with limited availability because of the continued social distancing orders that are in effect. I am confident that changes are imminent and hopefully this crazy chapter in our lives of medical and social drama will end soon and all of us can resume life as what everyone considered normal. Until that time, please stay safe, healthy and look out for one another.

From the Assistant Rabban

Nobles and Ladies, Much has happened since I last wrote an article for the “Messenger”. To quote Farmers Insurance, “We know a thing or two, because we have seen a thing or two”. We all need to hear this right now and think on it. Our story matters! We have often heard,” Together we can make it through this”. The past shows us we can overcome all things. We just need to band together. God uses all situations for good. You and I have a purpose and we matter. Do not forget it. We still have children that depend on us as Shriners. Other Masons depend on us for support. We cannot change yesterday or back-up and redo anything. Tomorrow is yet to come. We need to think outside of the box and continue to remember we are all in this to-gether. We are all here for each other. “One day a small gap appeared in the cocoon, through which the butterfly had to appear. A boy, who accidentally passed by, stopped and watched how the butterfly was trying to get out of the cocoon. It took a lot of time, the butterfly was trying very hard, and the gap was as little as before. It seemed that the power would leave the butterfly soon. The boy decided to help the butterfly. He took a penknife and cut the cocoon. The butterfly immediately got out, but its body was weak and feeble, and the wings were barely moving. The boy continued to watch the butterfly, thinking that now its wings would spread and it would fly. However, that did not happen. The rest of its life the butterfly had to drag its weak body and wings that weren’t spread. It was unable to fly because the boy did not realize that an effort to enter through the narrow gap of the cocoon was necessary for the butterfly, so that the life-giving fluid would move from the body to the butterfly’s wings and that the butterfly could fly. Life forced the butterfly to leave its shell hardly so that it would become stronger and would be able to grow and develop. If we were allowed to live without meeting difficulties, we would not be viable. Life gives us challenges to make us stronger.” Next time you are faced with a challenge, will you let the water sink your ship? Or will you let the water carry you to new destinations? It has been said “It can’t be done”. However, that does not mean we cannot or do not try. WE have our purpose. We will succeed if we work together and become stronger.

Blessings from Your AR Bill Couldry and Lady Karen

FROM THE RECORDER Greetings from the Recorder, To say the last two months have been interesting would be an understatement. As you know, most Temple activities came to an abrupt halt. Our office staff did work from home to ensure all essential activities were handled and all required reports were completed on time and forwarded to Shriners International in Tampa. I am pleased that the Moila Office is now open and staffed for regular business hours. A big shout out and thank you to Brenda and Shari for their efforts to keep us moving for-ward during this time. As of May 1, 2020, we have 1190 members. Currently there are 127 Nobles who have not paid their dues for 2020. I am working with the office staff in making contact with these Nobles. If you are reading this, do me a favor and check your wallet to make sure you have a current dues card. If not, I encourage you to remit your 2020 dues to the Temple Office. The stay at home orders are being lifted, businesses are opening and activities ramping up again. The Tem-ple will be coming to life as units and clubs begin to meet. If we do not have your e-mail address, please send it to the office so you can receive weekly updates. If you think we have it but you are not getting any-thing, check your “junk” mail. Due to the number of e-mail addresses this is sent to, many times our phones, Ipads and computers route them to “junk”. I am looking forward to seeing everyone as the Temple comes back to life!! Yours in the Faith, Ill. Ken Dunlap, Recorder

FROM THE ORIENTAL GUIDE Greetings, What a strange world we live in now, with COVID-19. We see many people who have a job working from home now. The re-tired folks have seen their lives changed as well. We have gone from many gatherings to total isolation in some cases. How does all of this affect the Shrine? Well, that’s a good question. Most of our membership comes from the Blue Lodges and these Lodges are shut down. So now what? We don’t have any answers but we have faith in God, family, country and yes, the Shrine. For over 100 years we have helped millions of children and I’m sure we will find a way to do so in the next 100. With our hospitals we continue to do the right thing. Let’s keep our focus. Stay safe. Continue to talk up the Shrine. Remember, to “just get one”. Yours in the faith, James Jeffers

Ole Tymers News

Greetings All, Hope this finds you all, safe & healthy!! Wow, what a different world we live in today! It seems like yesterday that we were all planning on working @ our annual Moila Circus. Suddenly that all came to a screeching halt, as well as everything else we have come to know as “normal". As far as our Unit, the circus was to be our first event for the new year. As with most things, we have all just hankered down & "stayed in place". As far as anything going on with our Unit members/Ladies, there has been a couple of items to report. It is with a "heavy heart" that we had to say goodbye to our Honorary Member, Earl Furst. Earl & Lady Evelyn were "diehard" mem-bers, since 1974. They attended every parade & Unit - Moila event that I can remember. Please keep Evelyn & the Furst Family, in your thoughts & prayers. Evelyn will continue to live in: Vintage Garden, 3302 No. Woodbine Apt. 3, St. Joseph, MO 64505. Also, just learned that Ernie & Dee Frye are moving down to South Missouri to live with their daughter Paula & her husband. I be-lieve moving day will be the last week of August. We are really going to miss this couple. Ernie & Dee have been with the Ole Tymers since Dec. of 1972. You still have time to drop them a note: Country Squire Retirement Community, 1602 Buckingham St. Apt. 116, St. Joseph, MO 64506. We all wish them well in this next chapter of their lives!! We were saddened to hear of the passing of one of our past Potentates, Ill. Mark Morgan. We know he & his family fought a coura-geous fight. We all extend our sincere condolences to the Morgan Family. As of this writing, we really don't know when & how things will “start up again". However, when this comes about, we will be ready to do what we can. We just all need to take care of ourselves, be safe, & stay healthy!!

Yours in the Faith, Bob Nichols
