Much has happened at Bishop Manogue since we last published an issue of the Miner Messenger. For instance, I have joined the Bishop Manogue family, and it has been a true pleasure meeting so many of you these first few months. I am impressed with your passion for Catholic education and your zeal for Bishop Manogue. There have also been Friday night football games, alumni reunions, remarkable student achievements, and journeys of

discovery, all of which you can read about in this issue. These wonderful things could not have occurred without the backing of the Bishop Manogue Community, and for that I thank you.

The last several years have been demanding from a financial perspective. The school’s operations function well on an annual basis, but do so only with the generous support of many of you. Many projects have been put on hold, staffing is stretched thin and people are working very hard, exceeding expectations daily. We need your help to move to the next level, and cement the long term financial sustainability of our school.

Happily, several initiatives to address that goal are underway. We have conducted “stakeholder breakfasts” to share our vision for a sustainable, credible, Catholic institution that is affordable and accessible to all. More such meetings are planned, because we want all with a vested interest in Bishop Manogue’s success to feel part of a

partnership. When contacted, please join us.

We are also in the early stages of reforming an Alumni Association to build fraternity and provide a point of contact for events, reunions and service opportunities. We also have a current ongoing “Class Challenge” for those Alumni who would like to contribute financially, and we of course continue with our other fund raising events and activities.

With your help, the good work going on here will not just continue, it will grow. This is a wonderful community and it is great to be a Miner!

Chris Whitty President

Wow! Where do I begin? We have an incredible student body, faculty, and staff for 2011-2012.

We have over 53 percent of our student body participating in fall sports, and are very proud of the accomplishments of these student-athletes. Homecoming 2011 was a huge success, and the week culminated in a dance attended by over 75 percent of our student body. Our freshman class of 179 members

had over 85 percent attendance at the Welcome Dance, and was a strong presence in the Homecoming Week class competitions. And, as we inch towards winter sports and Academic Team competitions, we anticipate the same amount of success.

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is also very proud to announce that we have two semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. We also have three first year students at the University of Nevada that were accepted into their highly selective Honors Program this fall.

The summer was short but much was accomplished. Our Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheer teams attended the UC Davis cheer camp and were invited to the NCA National competition in Dallas, Texas. Also, our Yearbook staff placed first at their annual camp, and had their 2011 3D cover included in Idea File magazine from Walsworth Publishing as the

best example of a 3D cover that they have seen!

We continue to surpass the state and national averages on the SAT and ACT tests. We are graduating over 99 percent of our students, and sending them to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country. Yes, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is not only alive and well, it is thriving. Please visit us at any time. Sit down with myself, a faculty or staff member, or any of our students, and discuss what we are doing to make Bishop Manogue the most sought after school in Northern Nevada. I look forward to our time together.

On Friday, September 9, 2011, for the first time in its 63 year history, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School hosted Friday night football, under the lights. Thanks to a group of generous donors, the support of Republic Electric and Philips Lighting, and some key people on the inside, the project was not only fully funded with no impact on the school’s operating budget, but the timeline was accelerated to have lights in place for the entire 2011 season.

Manogue parent and assistant football coach Pat Pilling was part of the team behind the lighting project, and says that the timing was just right. “Because of the work that Republic was already

doing with Philips to retrofit the school’s interior and exterior lighting, we were able to get a nicely reduced price for bringing lights to the stadium as well. It was simply the best opportunity we were going to get to do this and so we turned to our parents, to our potential donors, and said let’s go, now’s the time.” Pilling also credits his fellow coach and Manogue parent Mike Talbott and Board Member Brian Kernan with getting the job done.

As for operating costs, the advanced technology employed in the new light arrays make them ultra-efficient: all four poles combined cost only $7.80 per hour to run.

The Theme: Manogue was “Dancing to a Different Beat” this homecoming, with music—in all of its fabulous forms—the theme for the week. We had country-style Freshmen, Sophomores with “pop,” Juniors ready to rock, and some truly swingin’ Seniors. Is that Mrs. O I see getting in to the act? She’s a born-to-run registrar!

The Activities: Parking lot Picassos, Roller Babes, Flooded Fields and Jammed Gyms… must be homecoming week! The fun was topped off with a super-sized rally featuring some extremely silly skits (dance biscuits?), a footloose faculty showdown, and the spirit turned up full blast.

The Game: Ouch. The Miners lost a close one to Carson City on a windy Saturday afternoon. From a spectator standpoint, it was a terrific back-and-forth contest decided in the

last minutes by a 64-yard Carson field goal. Can’t win ‘em all, but we sure gave it our best.

The Royalty: And the winner is… Madi Mills was crowned at halftime and gave her father, head coach Paul Mills, a very special win for the day. Dom Marazzo assumed his throne at the homecoming dance, since the bonfire (the traditional venue for the ceremony) was rained out this year. All Hail!

The Family: The best part of homecoming is the opportunity to welcome back our alumni. Our Friday night mixer at the Tamarack was attended by more than 200, and the end zone BBQ on game day brought alumni and their families right up to the action. Some of last year’s graduate showed up ‘cause they miss us already. (Oh, and the food was free!)

Class reunion recaps

Class reunions

1961After a reception at the home of Frankie and Archie Granata the class of ‘61 attended the Manogue/Damonte football game that Manogue was courteous enough to win. We sat together as a block, and had North American Embroidery make a special “1961” Manogue baseball caps for all our classmates.

Saturday we had Mass with Fr. George Wolf as our celebrant, followed by a tour of the school. Then we had buffet lunch on the patio at the Tamarack Junction (great) and later gathered at the National Automobile Museum (wonderful) for our farewell dinner celebration accompanied by music from the 50s/60s. We had classmates come from Belgium, Guatemala, Honolulu, Atlanta, San Antonio, Colorado, Montana, Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada. I couldn’t believe OUR MANOGUE CLASS SPIRIT was as strong as ever 50 years after our graduation. Bishop Manogue … a special school. Manogue Miners … a special bond that lasts a lifetime. — Ross Barker ‘61

1964 and 1965The classes of ’64 and ’65 met for a combined reunion at the Tamarack on Friday of homecoming weekend. There were approximately 20 alumni from each class, and we all enjoyed seeing old friends and sharing stories about the old days, and the new days, too. Even 47 years later, you could recognize friends right away, and it was interesting to see the different turns and directions that various classmates’ lives had taken. All in all, it was a wonderful evening with friends from the past and the present. — Gary Strength ’64

1966The class of ‘66 had their 45th reunion on August 20 at the home of Gayle Piazzo Stevens and her husband Jerry. Their beautiful home and backyard gave the perfect atmosphere for a fun evening of cocktails, dinner, music and camaraderie. Fun was had by all 48 who attended.—Cathy Pettinari ‘66

1981They came from Washington, Arizona, California and Florida, and although they had different stories and experiences, they held one thing in common: they were all members of Bishop Manogue High School’s Class of 1981. At Friday’s Tamarack Mixer, we rekindled old memories of Bishop Manogue on the hill and shared new stories. At Saturday’s end zone barbecue we introduced family, watched the football game, and enjoyed the Homecoming activities.

This reunion was made extra special by a Saturday night dinner at the home of Brian Sandoval, Governor of the State of Nevada. And while that dinner made this reunion unforgettable, it was what we sometimes take for granted that made it so much more. Sadly, our classmate Dan Gardner unexpectedly passed away a few days after the reunion due to complications from surgery. Dan was at all of the reunion events and spent time with everyone. God allowed our class to have one more visit with Dan, and for that, our 30-year reunion became a time where we were reminded how special life is, and how fortunate we are to be able to share memories with such wonderful people! For those who did not make it, WE MISSED YOU! We are thinking about you and care for every one of you. God Bless and Go Miners. — Herb Santos ‘81

Several classes held reunions this summer and fall. Here’s what our grads had to say about their celebrations:

Page 10: Messenger Miner

Class reunions

2001We wanted our reunion to have a hometown feel, so the Santa Fe and Freight House District were perfect. We also wanted to be sure to somehow include the memories our classmates who had passed away, Aly Christiansen and Chris Ibaibarriaga. Because we’re truly a family, it would not have been the same without them, and so we decided to invite their families. Aly’s mother, Becky Blank, came to the reunion. It was a joyous and rare experience to be able to see her, and she could see Aly in all of us. Chris Ibaibarriaga’s parents, could not attend, but wrote a beautiful letter to our class.

Dinner at the Santa Fe was a true gathering of friends. We picked up where we left off, with a lot of laughter, joking and true togetherness. We laughed at ourselves, at the styles from the era, and the fond memories we had at Bishop Manogue. We held our glasses up in memory of Chris and Aly.

That night was all about true friends, family and the bond that unites the Class of 2001. It was a wonderful event and a huge success! We are considering a 15-year reunion! — Michelle Hancock ‘01 and Casey Dillon ‘01

Respect Life ContestThree Manogue students were recognized for their original designs in the annual Respect Life Poster contest sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Clara Bachman won honorable mention, Klamath Henry got second place, and Janey Almaraz was awarded first place.

In the PinkIn October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Manogue boys and girls soccer programs contributed more than $1800 to the St. Mary’s Foundation Breast Health Program. They raised the money through shirt sales and gate proceeds from their Oct. 9 matches, where they all competed in pink!

Book ItBishop Manogue’s Homecoming Book drive collected nearly 2,000 books for the children of

Echo Loder Elementary! We’re proud of the generosity of our students, parents, faculty, and alumni!

Blessing of Pinwheels on International Peace DayBy Father John Legerski

Loving God, your son Jesus has told us that those who strive for peace will be called your children. Today, as we place these pinwheels around our school, we come to you asking that there be true and lasting peace in our world.

These simple expressions of our artistic talents are also expressions of the hope in our hearts, trusting that with your grace, we can truly make a difference when we care.

May the wind that turns these colorful wheels remind all who see them that your Holy Spirit offers to our world gentle winds of change and the promise of a better day.

May all who yearn for an end to war and fighting be trying to do all that they can to live in peace with their families and neighbors.

May you bless those who have made these pinwheels, as well as our school, our families and our communities. And most of all, Loving Father, be close to all whose lives and hearts are torn apart by war, violence or hatred.

Amen

Art Students’ Annual Prayer for PeaceOn September 21 and 22, Manogue students planted their Peace Pinwheels on the grassy green behind the Student Community Center. The pinwheels were arranged in various designs and the students joined to say a prayer composed especially for the ceremony by the school’s chaplain Father John. The Peace Pinwheel Movement is now worldwide, celebrated in 40 countries.

Freshman FrenzyManogue’s Freshman class is at capacity for the first time since the move to the new campus! Here, some helpful 9th graders pitch in on Miner Pride cleanup day during homecoming week.

Mini MinersManogue soccer, basketball, baseball and cheer teams have all held camps for elementary school kids during the past year. The camps not only generate a little revenue for the clubs, they get little bodies active and engaged, and create some priceless childhood memories.

SAT/ACTBishop Manogue’s 2011 graduating seniors once again scored above the national and state averages on both the SAT and ACT.

“We’re very pleased, not only with our students, but also with our faculty and support staff,” said Manogue Principal Tim Jaureguito. “Our goal is to give our students a solid foundation for success, and we’re pleased to see this tangible indication that they are ready for what comes next.”

But aside from the test scores, says Jaureguito, Bishop Manogue graduates are prepared in other important ways to join and contribute to society. “Our 2011 graduates performed a total of 22,881 hours of community service during their four years here. Now that’s a score that we are extremely proud of.”

Don’t Stop

This summer, Manogue faculty member Leslie Righetti, aka Madame R., completed a 500-mile

trek along El Camino de Santiago in support of Tuition Assistance. Ms. Righetti began her journey June 9 and arrived at her destination, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain, on July 6. In all, she raised nearly $12,000.

El Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, is the pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried. El Camino de Santiago has been traveled for more than a thousand years and still attracts tens of thousands of Christian pilgrims and other travellers each year.

Righetti covered anywhere from 15 to 24 miles per day and spent evenings with other travelers in albergues (dormitory style hotels) or hostels. “I stayed most nights in albergues with about 30 people in a room and sharing a bath. One night I splurged for a single room and felt like I had died and gone to heaven!”

And while some travelers along the El Camino de Santiago might turn to their GPS systems in a pinch, Righetti says that the traditional and decidedly low-tech markers along the way were excellent guides.

“There are yellow arrows all along the way,” she says, “and these gave such a sense of security. It was very symbolic really, of how in life we have to look for the arrows, the signs, that will guide us to the place we want to be.” The route is also regularly marked with the cockle shell, an ancient symbol of St. James, and by statues and artwork that vary from town to town but are all geared to aiding pilgrims.

Righetti says the journey touched her on many levels. “Physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally and culturally, there were so many challenges and so many rewards.” As a French teacher who also speaks German, Italian and some Spanish, for instance, Righetti found her advocacy for teaching children foreign languages to be more than justified. “My language abilities carried me through so many situations and opened me up to meeting different people. It really drove home to me how important it is to be able to reach out to others no matter where they are from.”

Righetti traveled solo, something she says made the trip even more poignant. “You know, we become so accustomed to our security blankets here at home, but out there my best friends were first God, then my boots, my poles, my hat, and finally myself.”

R i g h e t t i says she reached a point in the journey where realized that she wasn’t ever really alone. “Most importantly, I truly learned to rely on my relationship with God, being able to talk to Him, to rely on Him to get through whatever was difficult. My mantra, the little chant I used to keep moving was just, ‘One foot in front of the other. God will help me.’ That simple action of one foot then the next got me so far.”

If you’d like to add to Ms. Righetti’s Tuition Assistance fund, go to bishopmanogue.org and click the “Donate Now” button to give online, or send contributions to the school, 110 Bishop Manogue Dr., Reno, 89511.

Michelle finished in 18 minutes, 37 seconds in the 5K run. The Notre Dame women’s team was fifth in the meet.

2011Neil Healy exuberantly led the Manogue student body in all the classic cheers—The Boxer, The Rol lercoaster, Rah Toilet, and Go Bananas, to name a few. Now, judging by the current color of his face, he’s continuing his role as “best fan ever” at the University of Nevada. Go Neil!

Apleasing aspect of being employed at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is getting

contacted by alumni who want to reengage with the school. Some are a couple of years out, others are decades out. But the common thread is their desire to reconnect with a piece of their past that played a role in who they are today.

In June of this year we received an email from Sean B. Sullivan, Student Body President and class of 1999 alum. Sean had visited our website and learned we had introduced lacrosse as a club sport. Sean was an avid lacrosse player as an undergraduate at St Mary’s and during his law school days at Columbia Law School in New York, and was eager to hear about the program. We filled him in, and on the flip side, got a chance to hear about him.

Sean is now an attorney and investment banker with Credit Suisse

in San Francisco, and his work is intriguing. Global travel and IPOs along with mergers and acquisitions are what he does. He is on the road assisting many notable high-tech companies in their endeavors to go public. And through it all he has never forgotten the privilege he received as a young man attending Bishop Manogue Catholic High School.

His parents saw the value of a Catholic education and today he attributes much of his success to Manogue. He recalls Fr. Chuck, Anne Wieland, Bob Sullivan, Carol Verzola, Susan Ritter and Mrs. O’Gorman with great fondness. When asked about the greatest gift he received at Manogue, he answered without hesitation. “I learned social skills.” The mixture and diversity of the student population presented interesting people.

“My Manogue education was the foundation…Education will get you into the schools and shape the path for a rich life.” Sean attributes his Manogue education with opening the doors to the schools he wanted to attend including St. Mary’s College and then Columbia Law School.

Sean remains in close contact with his parents and his brother Ryan, a class of 2007 alum who is currently spending the year studying at the University of Torino in Italy. Sean has a fondness for the arts and currently

sits on the San Francisco Opera Bravo Board of Directors and is a Director at The Village Well, an organization providing parents with infants and young children a welcoming, and supportive community in which to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to enrich and strengthen their families.

Welcome home Sean, and thanks for supporting Bishop Manogue Catholic High School.

*Attending Catholic colleges

Keeping the FaithManogue’s recent graduates are busy with new subjects, new teachers, and new challenges, but along with all that newness, many are still holding on to something quite familiar—a Catholic education.

Twenty-seven members of the class of 2011 are attending 12 different Catholic colleges and universities around the country this fall, and they say their years in Catholic school—as many as 13 for some of them—have prepared them well.

“A Catholic education has helped me grow both academically and

personally,” says Maggie Jones, who attends Santa Clara. “The incorporation of religion into learning allows for knowledge and life lessons beyond what’s found in textbooks.”

Sean-Luke Brija, who attends Gonzaga, says he owes a lot to his Catholic education. “I’ve met wonderful people. And it has steered me to work hard and set my goals high.”

A Catholic education means that parents have to work hard, too, but Kathy Hogan, whose son Brennan attends the University of Portland, believes the sacrifices are worth it.

“Our children’s spiritual lives have been nurtured and encouraged by the interaction with positive role models of teachers, staff and school families. There is no greater gift that we’ve been able to give our children than a Catholic education; one where the fabric of their spiritual lives has been so inter-woven that prayer, a commitment to their faith, and making a meaningful contribution to society have become who they are and what they stand for.”

“The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.”

B. A.S.H 2011 featured the incredible talents of performer Greg London. London wowed audiences with his spot-on vocal impressions, as well as own interpretations of well-known songs. Particularly moving moments in the show included a duet with his son Jason, a student at Bishop Manogue, and another with basketball coach Bill Ballinger honoring the memory of longtime Manogue supporter Jack Reviglio. The evening also featured KOLO morning anchor Amanda Sanchez ‘91 as emcee, and a fabulous dinner by the Eldorado.

T he Jim Williams Miner Golf Classic took place on September 16. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day for a round of golf, with bright blue skies and crisp fall air to accentuate the beauty of Lakeridge Golf Course. The winning foursome this year was made up of Dave Myers, his son Matt Myers ‘10, Justin Farley ‘10, and Larry Rumball. The tournament is held each year in honor of Jim Williams, past president of Bishop Manogue, and an energetic and supporter

of not only Catholic education, but also many other charitable causes

throughout the community.

on Oct. 15 was a super-sized tailgate party featuring delicious food and microbrews from some of the area’s finest purveyors, including

Roundabout Catering, the Tamarack, Gold n Silver, Miguel’s, Great Basin Brewery, Brews Brothers and

Buckbean Brewery. Also supersized this year were the raffle prizes: alumnus and current parent Steve Damonte ‘83 was the lucky winner of $10,000!
