FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Student Success Last week I inadvertently left Thomas Stellar and Jack Walker’s names off the list of Prefects for 2014. I apologise for this and of course congratulate both boys on their selection to our leadership team. Our Year 8 Debating Team has won the Regional Final of the Premier’s Debating Challenge against Baulkham Hills High School and the four girls now head off to the 3-day State Championships at Sydney University. Abbey Sim, Corrine Kennedy, Joanna Bennetts and Angie Geng did a wonderful job debating the pros and cons of downloading music in this round. Along with Simone Cao and Brooke Kissell the girls are looking forward to debating for two days in the round robin section of the State finals as well as their next topic which they hope will see them through to the very end. We wish them well and look forward to hearing exciting stories of this challenge. Year 12 student Hannah Bowman’s body of work for her HSC art exam, ‘Feast Your Eyes’ has nominated for consideration for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS 2014. ArtExpress is an annual suite of exhibitions of exemplary artworks created by students for the Higher School Certificate Examination in Visual Arts. The works represent a broad range of subject matter, approaches, styles and media including ceramics, painting, photomedia, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, textiles and fibre, time-based forms, documented forms, and collections of works. It is an honour for Hannah’s work to even be considered and of course we will have our fingers crossed that it will be selected for final exhibition.

Multicultural Day 2013 As I write our 2nd Multicultural Day is in full swing out in the grounds. There is a fabulous array of international food tastes on sale, dancing in the quad, sumo suits in the hall, international soccer on the oval and music of all nationalities playing in the air. The festival and carnival feel is incredible and it is such a pleasure to see so many of our staff and students celebrating multiplicity, inclusion and diversity. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather as we had been expecting a wet day (according to the forecast earlier in the week) and we had lots of sunscreen and shade available for everyone. I hope your child brings home fabulous stories this afternoon. Late Notes and Absences Every so often parents ask me why we send letters out when their child is late to school and I totally understand that they may think this is a bit extreme “for only 3 or 4 minutes”. In the big scheme of things this may not seem important to some but as a school we are obliged to “undertake all reasonable measures to contact parents promptly and within two days of an unexplained absence occurring”. Students who need to attend the front office in the mornings and who swipe on when they arrive are all late. You may not know it because you may have dropped them off much earlier and they have gone elsewhere before going to class. These are still considered absences by the DEC and as such we must follow policy and notify you. Parents have a responsibility to inform us of any time, no matter how long or short, their child spends away from school. If students are late or absent, a note explaining that absence will mean that letters will not need to be sent. You can do this by either sending a note with your child when they return to school, email the school, send a fax or even ring and let us know. All these methods are entirely acceptable. FROM THE DEPUTY …MR GRADY
Our National Anthem
During the Junior Assembly in Week 5, I observed all of Year 7, 8 and 9 students singing our National Anthem, led by a magnificent duo of lead singers. The girls on stage did a wonderful job, though I was struck by the almost whisper like singing of the vast majority of the assembly group. A national anthem is a song that unites each and every one of us. It is something that we all should be immensely proud and demonstrate our pride through our strong voice. Although I am not an advocate of Wikipedia, I feel that in this case, it provides a very good description of what an anthem is and its purpose, as below. A national anthem is a generally patriotic musical composition that evokes and eulogizes the history, traditions and struggles of its people, recognized either by a nation's government as the official national song, or by convention through use by the people. We as Australians are simply very fortunate. Watching the weekly news and seeing the situations and struggles of people across other countries is a constant reminder of this. The singing of the national anthem is not about the quality of the voice of the individual, but the way the group unites and sings together. As such, I would like to encourage each member of the student body to demonstrate their pride in our wonderful nation by joining in and singing at the next assembly. Assembly Award Winners Congratulations to the array of students listed below who were recognised for their achievement at last week’s assembly.

Attendance - Students seeking an exemption from school for a short period
Students who are seeking an exemption from school for a short period of time due to a family holiday need to include proof of travel arrangements (copies of plane tickets, accommodation bookings etc…) with their application. Application forms are available from the attendance office. Students must ensure that applications are started with sufficient time for them to collect work from all class teachers to complete while they are away. The purpose of completing this process is so that these dates are not included as part of the attendance data on your child’s report. Mrs Pledger HT Administration

FROM THE ENGLISH FACULTY Congratulations to the following students who are merit award recipients:

Year 8 Premier’s Debating – Regional Champions! A HUGE congratulations to the Year 8 Debating Team who successfully defeated Baulkham Hills High School in the Regional Final for the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The nerves were running high and anticipation mounted as the topics where revealed. A sigh of relief was heard from both teams when the topic, ‘Downloading of music from the internet should be considered illegal’ was announced. It was a close debate with both teams offering strong arguments. The team fired question after question, Baulkham Hills failing to address some. After a unanimous decision from the three adjudicators, the students were awarded the win and now go through to the State Final camp. The camp will be held over three days (27th -29th November) at the University of Sydney. There, the winners from the ten regions across NSW will meet to compete in a series of round-robin debates to determine the last two teams to appear in the grand finale. We wish Joanna Bennetts, Simone Cao, Angie Geng, Corinne Kennedy, Brooke Kissell, and Abbey Sim the best of luck at the State Final Camp.

Year 9 Camp 2013 Collaroy On Wednesday 30th October 2013, 155 Year 9 students embarked on their three day camp to the Salvation Army Centre at Collaroy. Students participated in a range of activities, including the Drop Pole, where students climbed a 13 metre pole and then jumped and made the descent in 3 seconds. Archery, Laser Tag, Giant Swing, Vertical Challenge and Flying Fox were also some of the fun activities completed. The weather was beautiful which made it extra nice for each group when they visited nearby Collaroy Beach for games. A themed Halloween trivia night was held on Thursday where witches, zombies and scary masks emerged. Overall, the students had an excellent time and represented MFHS in a well behaved and positive manner. Well done Year 9! Ms Letherbarrow Year Adviser
