FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The Library
In the last newsletter, I reported the school was advised that due to a Work Health and Safety issue, the library would be closed for
approximately 3 weeks.
Since then, the school has been extremely proactive in seeking solutions through the Department and contractors to commence and
complete all required work. I would also like to thank the P and C, and in particular, Belinda Schuster for her understanding of the situation and her relentless pursuit in seeking an appropriate and
time efficient solution.
I am disappointed to report, as of 15 November 2017, work in the library is yet to commence and the site remains closed. I have been advised that the Department is collaboratively working to determine
a solution to a complex and costly issue. However, anticipated dates of quote agreement, commencement and completion have not been
met. Model Farms High School will continue to rigorously seek the best
outcome for our students, staff and community with the intention of the work completion as soon as possible. During this time, the
Dance studio continues to function as a learning space with computer access, so that students may still research, study and seek assistance. The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff
is of the highest priority and we apologise for this ongoing inconvenience. Further details will be provided to the community as
they become available.

17th November 2017 Term 4 - Week 6
2
I had the pleasure of attending the Year 11 Recognition Assembly on Tuesday 14 November and seeing first hand, the array of students identified
for their collective effort and drive to succeed. Congratulations to all award recipients, performers and production crew for making this assembly such a
success.
A reminder that the remaining recognition assemblies occur as follows, with
detail being published in the coming weeks.
Year 7 and 9: Morning of Tuesday 12 December Year 8 and 10: Afternoon of Tuesday 12 December
Christina Bennet In September, the Minister for Education announced a new strategy to
support leaders in our schools. The strategy is focussed on supporting principals as educational leaders and recognises the important role school leaders play in shaping the future of our children and young people.
One important aspect of the Strategy was the expansion of the Department
of Education team of directors from 65 to 110. This is so principals and directors are optimally positioned to develop professional relationships that
are collegial, constructive, informed and insightful. I am pleased to advise you of the appointment of our Principal, Christina
Bennet to the position of Director Educational Leadership, commencing Term 2 2018. Christina has been an outstanding leader at Model Farms High
School and in her role as Principal School Leadership has guided, mentored and supported many principals across Western Sydney. On behalf of the school I would like to wish her every success in her new role, and ensure all
of the community, that she will continue to work with MFHS in her current role of Principal School Leadership, till the end of Term 1 2018.
The Department of Education has begun the process of recruiting the new principal for Model Farms High School. Until the appointment of a new
Principal, to commence Term 2 2018, I will continue in the relieving role and would like to thank the students, staff and community for their continued
support. School Management Plan 2018-2020
Throughout Term 4, the school has evaluated the current 2015-2017 Strategic Management Plan, consulting staff, students (focus groups) and
parents (phone calls). On 1 November 2017, the school P and C was informed of the process and
progress of this evaluation, and offered the opportunity to provide feedback.
Working parallel to this has been the development of the 2018-2020 draft plan. The school has consulted stakeholders and the senior executive are now aligning the feedback provided to 5 P’s of the plan (Purpose, Processes,
Practices, Products and People.
All NSW schools are to have their 2018-2020 Management Plan uploaded by the end of Term 1 2018.
3
I am pleased to advise that the Strategic Directions for the new plan are
based upon:
Future Focussed Teaching (e.g. 21st Century skills)
Visible Learning (quality feedback, engaging students in their own
learning, displaying and recognising success….) and
Community/leadership (providing leadership opportunities across the
school and engaging the community into MFHS)
The plan does not and will not detail all that will happen within our school, nor all that we value. However, it will give a clear indication of the priorities
our school will focus on in order to achieve the maximum learning outcomes of our students across 2018-2020.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS DALTON
Year 11
On Tuesday 14th November was the recognition assembly for Year 11. This was a great opportunity to celebrate the success of Year 11 students as they
begin their HSC studies. It was also great to see so many parents, grandparents, friends celebrating their success. It is also important to
remember that as Year 11 have commenced their HSC courses; the majority of their subjects will have an assessment task due that count towards the HSC in the last few weeks of term. It is therefore important for Year 11 to
continue working right up until the last day of term. All Year 11 students have been issued with their HSC assessment calendar and the rules and
procedures for the HSC. Please take the time to sit down with your child and go through their schedule of tasks so that they are aware of any busy
periods in 2018.
I have also notices an increase in the number of Year 11 students driving to school. It is important for students to remember to drive safely when leaving school of an afternoon, as there are many younger students, buses and other
vehicles at these times. All students who drive a car to school should have return the “Permission to Travel to and from School by Private Vehicle”. A
copy of this form has been included in this newsletter if your child still needs to return this to school.
Year 9
Next Wednesday Year 9 leave for camp at Foster. The camp will provide
student’s opportunities to interact with others in their year group enjoy their activities and relax after a busy year. I would also like to acknowledge the teachers attending camp who are giving up their time and families to
supervise the students. Also, a special thanks to Mr Chris Puleo who is the Year 9 advisor and has organised the camp for them.
Year 7
Well their first year at Model Farms is drawing to a close and they look
forward to being in Year 8 and not the ‘babies’ of the school anymore.
Zach, one of our Year 7 students, has produced this wonderful artwork during a series of art lessons in Term 4. Zach was asked to outline his face
first, then measure the sections, after painting each section differently to explore the possibilities of using prime colours. The black outline enhances the person’s face. The white paint gives the painting extra emphasis to his
face and the outside of his face. This painting has many different shades of colours, shapes and tones. Well done Zach.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS PLEDGER
Attendance There has been a rush of students presenting requests to finish the school year early in order to travel overseas. Obviously, airfares are cheaper before
the holidays but when all is considered, the school year is only 40 weeks long which leaves 12 weeks for families to travel overseas. Please endeavour not
to take your child out of school early. It will be recorded as unjustified leave. While I have this conversation with the students about this unnecessary leave, I recognise that it is actually the parents who make these decisions.
Please do not place your child in this difficult position.
2018 Subjects - Year 8 and Year 10 All students have been officially advised of their subject choices for 2018. ALL students in Year 8 were placed in subjects in their list of original choices.
Students in Year 10 have been interviewed if courses were not offered and after consultation with the Deputy Principal, have chosen from the suitable
courses available. Year 10 Students
At the moment I have a number of students on waiting lists for spaces in classes for Year 11. I am also aware that there will be some students who
will not be attending Model Farms next year but parents have not let us know this formally yet. As soon as you are aware that your student will be departing Model Farms please let us know. We are doing our best to give
each student the pattern of study they want. The spaces generated by departing students may give other students the Christmas curriculum
present they were really after. The HSC: All My Own Work program is designed to help Higher School
Certificate students to follow the principles and practices of good scholarship. This includes understanding and valuing ethical practices when locating and
using information as part of their HSC studies. The program has been developed as part of the NSW Government's Respect and Responsibility strategy and complements other approaches such as brochures for teachers,
students and parents and strengthens student and teacher understandings of the HSC.
All My Own Work program is integrated with other NSW syllabuses and
programs. The program is designed to be delivered flexibly as self-paced learning modules. The program's content is divided into five modules: 1. Scholarship Principles and Practices
2. Acknowledging Sources

School Newsletter Article: Adolescent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program
In early 2017 parents/carers of Year 7 students were asked to provide consent
for their children to receive three doses of HPV vaccine in the NSW School Vaccination Program.
Most* Year 7 students who have received two doses of HPV vaccine are considered to be fully vaccinated and do not require a further
dose.
This change is based on recent international studies that show for children aged 9 to 14 years of age, two doses of HPV vaccine provide the same protection as three doses, as long as the second dose is given at least six
months after the first dose. Based on this evidence, the World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends a two-dose HPV schedule, and this has
already been adopted in comparable countries (i.e. the UK, Canada, the United States and New Zealand) and is now being adopted in Australia.
In 2017 Year 7 students were given the second dose of HPV vaccine at least six months after the first dose to accommodate the urgent roll-out of the
Meningococcal W Response Program to Year 11 and 12 students. Year 7 students who have received only one dose of HPV this year will be offered their second dose in 2018. Parents/carers whose children were vaccinated in
2017 but who still wish for their child to receive a third dose of HPV vaccine can access a free dose from their general practitioner (GP).
* Students with significantly impaired immune systems are still recommended to have three doses of HPV vaccine. Parents of these students should make
arrangements to complete the vaccine course with their GP or by calling their local public health unit on 1300 066 055.
More information is available on the NSW Health website at
www.health.nsw.gov.au/hpv or by calling your local public health unit on 1300 066 055.

We are all looking forward to the Year 10 Luna Park excursion on Thursday 7th December. This is a reward for students who have completed all of the
necessary requirements of the Stage 5 course. The permission notes have been given out. Please be aware that there is a ‘cut off’ date for payments.
Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-
82AU PLUS II is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Different brands of scientific calculators have different layouts and it is important that everyone in a class has the same calculator. Students need this calculator from Year 7.
It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator
and know how to use the different functions.
Free Maths Tuition:
Free Maths tuition is provided every Thursday afternoon after school from 3pm to 4pm. Years 7 to 10 are in room 8-07 and Years 11 and 12 in 8-06. It

Support Faculty Work Experience Term 4
This term, 8 of our students, Yrs 10-12, are out at Work Experience each Monday.
Woolworths Parramatta is giving them practise in facing, returns, cardboard compacting and
customer service. Our students wear black pants and white
shirts so are often asked questions by customers. This gives them the opportunity to
assist with the enquiry or politely explain that they are on Work Experience and direct them to Woolworths’ staff.
Travel training and navigating to and from the work place, is another useful
life skill that is reinforced each week. Ms Rawat, Ms Kelly (Wk A) and Mrs Shirley (Wk B), travel and work with the
students.
We are very impressed with their progress, politeness and independence, which is improving each week.
