Kerala Tidings 2017 January - 1 From The Provincial New Year Resolutions Do you believe in New Year Resolutions? Some believe that they are taken only to be broken soon after. We know from history that resolutions have been made ever since 153 BC and have its links with Janus, the mythical god of Rome. Somehow, it helps to take some resolutions because it reminds us of the constant need of renewal and re-commitment to our dream. Fr Kallepallil Commission while reporting after the recent evaluation of our schools wrote, “Most of our schools are functioning well and the infrastructural facilities are fine in most cases. All the same, they need to set the bar of excellence one or two notches higher.” I think this applies to all our ministries in the Province. We need to aim for more excellence. Not only at the ministry level, but also at our personal levels: to acquire more knowledge, to go deeper in spirit, to reach out to the poor and to deepen our bonds with the Jesuit community. GC 36 invited us to row into the deep. May 2017 be a year when we will dare to row deeper, dream bigger and live the impossible dream. So, do not forget to make a few resolutions for the New Year. K.J MathewLOYOLA, ALUVA As the Christmas bells chimed all around us our whole community began preparing ourselves for the nativity of our Lord. To prepare us spiritually for the birthday of the Lord, Fr Binoy Pichalakkatt, fresh from his Tertianship, guided us through a beautiful Recollection. Then there were the ‘temporal’ preparations in plenty! The novices put their heads together, woke up their creative potentials and made a pretty elegant, eco-friendly crib, stars & a Christmas tree. Then on 23rd we had a special Carol Service for our neighbours. On Christmas night all the II Year novices went to different parishes for ministry. On Christmas day Jack Achan presided over the solemn Community Mass. The much awaited community days, coordinated by Frangle and Mineesh, were filled with fun and frolic. This celebration certainly revitalised our relationship with one another. On 27th Loyola organized the customary evening get-together with our neighbours to share the joy of Christmas. Then on 29th morning we had yet another Christmas celebration with the ‘Papas and mammas’ of the Old-age Home in Chunangamveli.

Lok Manch is making steady progress at Attappady with pocket meetings being held at all the four organizations under AADI unit. Though organizing adivasis is difficult, the positive effects of Lok Manch are already visible; people have started addressing local issues on their own. The second National Lok Manch Seminar at Pune was attended by the four organizational heads. We get used to regular visits by our big friends, the elephants, but Mr Naile, our Coordinator, found it wiser to shift his stay to Kottathara. George Thenadikulam LOYOLA, POOVAR

At the end of the year as we look back we have a lot to be grateful for. Some former associates of Loyola Poovar who had been a bit apprehensive about our newer initiatives like higher education are now more than convinced and have whole-heartedly chipped in. JECI Poovar unit has raised a lakh and a quarter for a Scholarship Fund for the meritorious students of Loyola Institute of Commerce. The Scholarship is a tribute to Fr Antony Manipadam a relentless champion of education of the coastal children; thanks to him, there are scores of highly placed professionals in all walks of life. The same group has promised assistance for the renovation of our dilapidated Kalakshetram (Auditorium). The assistance and the encouragement that we receive from the province is proof of our collective priority and owning up. We have also a very positive experience of support from Loyola, Community, Sreekaryam -

our partner apostolic community. We also thank all those Jesuits who have been exceptionally generous and kind in sharing their valuable time interacting with our students and staff on various occasions.

    K J ThomasINIGO SADAN, BANGALORE

The season of Christmas was filled with joyous experiences for us of Inigo Sadan community. As nature was getting ready for the winter season, community members got busy with preparations for the feast both externally and internally. The month began with two striking events. One was the ordination of five deacons of Karnataka Province in the Bangalore region. The second was “Enlightening others with the wisdom gained from GC 36”, which was led by Fr Stany, the Provincial, along with two GC delegates. Indeed it was an inspiring sharing for all of us.

We had different levels of Christmas celebration in the community. The Inigo Sadan community hosted Christmas gatherings for our benefactors, neighbours and collaborators, for our extended community members, hostellers and boarders. Sharing love with one another filled our hearts with Christmas joy.

Sch Deslin went to Solur for an outreach program at the beginning of the month. Sch Anjo took initiative in adorning a creative Christmas tree in the College. Sch Sebin organized a Christmas program for our college students in St Louis Boarding House, which added to the joy of both the U.G. Science students and our boarders.

Dn Sheise paid a visit to our community, as he had a special invitation to become the official photographer for the ordination ceremony.

AnjoXTC, BELGAUM The month of December began with our ten-day of pastoral exposure at the Bom Jesu Basilica, Old Goa. All of us got various types of works during the Novena and on the feast day, December 3. We saw and experienced the bodily presence of St Francis Xavier. We experienced the deep faith of the people towards their Goincho Sahib.

We had a World History course of four days from December 13 to 16. The course, conducted by Fr Rinald D’souza changed our perspective about world history. As we celebrated Christmas we Juniors put up a one act play based on Christmas in the Fatima Cathedral, Belgaum. It was well appreciated by the Bishop and the parishioners. Immediately after December 25 we began our community days; we had a lot of fun and frolic. The next important event was the annual Visitation of our PCF, Fr Anto Muringathery. It was a joyful experience for us to meet our PCF for the first time.

We Juniors wish all the Province members, “A Very Prosperous and Grace filled New Year 2017.”

Christy J.PDE NOBILI COLLEGE, PUNEWe began the month of December with the joy of Fr Thomas Karimundackal joining the JDV faculty. We were also happy to welcome Fr Ranjit, who was on an industrial visit with the students from Loyola College, Trivandrum. JijoJESA & LOK MANCH

The death of Fr Sabu Malayil has been an irreplaceable loss for Kerala JESA, considering the selfless contribution he has made to our marginalized brothers and sisters and especially his recent committed work with the inter-state migrants at Jeevika, Kalady.

  • Kerala Tidings 2017 January - 7

The second National Workshop on Lok Manch was held at J D V, Pune, from November 22–25, 2016. It brought together about 120 organization heads and other partners from different parts of India for reflection, review and planning. JESA-Lok Manch organization heads of AADI, Sneharam and TUDI and other Lok Manch partners in Kerala participated. The workshop helped to evolve an action plan for the next year with a clear activity matrix. The annual JESA meeting of Coordinators of Social Action (CSA) was held soon after the workshop; Lourdes Baptista, Director, Assistancy Development Office (ADO) initiated a discussion with the CSAs on evolving a common brand name and sustainable common action plan for all our social action centres. Fr Benny Chiramel presented a position paper on ‘Communalism and Our Response’.

Fr Benny presented the major findings of a collaborative study on inter-state migrants at a seminar in Town Hall, Kozhikode. The study was joint effort by Jeevika, Kalady, Jeevika-MOS-SRC, Kozhikode and Sneharam, Anchuthengu, in collaboration with ISI-Bangalore. LOK MANCH has completed one year of its activities in October, and has entered a new field related to National Food Security Act (NFSA). As part of it Sneharam conducted a half-day workshop for its animators and community leaders. The presence of Muslim women representatives from a Lok Manch pocket in Perumathura attending the workshop at Sneharam was a pleasant surprise. The Imam of the main Mosque has agreed to use a Malayalam version of our instruction materials on NFSA for sessions with the women at his Mosque. LOK MANCH plans to have more capacity building training workshops for the community leaders, and interventions based on them, for ensuring the rights of our priority communities in Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad and Palakkad.
