Principal’s Report Parent Teacher Interviews On Tuesday, we held Parent Teacher Interviews for Year 7 to 12. The third term Interviews are gen-erally a bit quieter than the start of the year, but it was very good to hear about the positive parent, student and teacher interactions during the day. If you were unable to attend the interviews for any reason, please feel free to contact the College to organise a time to talk with staff regarding your child’s progress. Year 9 School for Student Leadership 2020 We have received notification that we have been successful in our application for a team of 4 Year 9 students to attend the School for Student Leadership in Term 3 next year. Two boys and two girls will have the opportunity to spend nine weeks at Gnurad Gundij (near Glenormiston) developing a range of skills and strategies that will improve their leadership knowledge and capabilities. This is a highly sought after program and we were delighted to hear about our successful application. I would encourage all current Year 8 students to think carefully about this opportunity as student application and selection will take place early in Term 4. North Central District Athletics On Wednesday, a team of approximately 50 students travelled to Charlton to compete in the athlet-ics sports. At the time of writing this report, results were not known, but I am confident that our stu-dents will have competed well and achieved some very positive results. Leadership Soup Lunch On Monday, Emily Edwards and Ella Darby ran a soup lunch as a part of their involvement in the Western Bulldogs Leadership program. It was a very successful event and the girls are to be con-gratulate on their organisation and dedication to the task. Well done. Pre Service Teachers For the rest of this term we have two pre service teachers working at the College. Miss. Taylor Ma-son has teaching methods in Health and Maths and is working mainly with Mr. Cornwell, She is cur-rently in her second week of a five week round. Former student, Eliza Tillig started her four week round this week with methods in English and Health. She is working with Dr. Taylor and Mr. Lobley in English, as well as, Mr. Knight in Health. I am sure that we will make them feel very wel-come. End of Year fast approaching for Year 12 students By the time this newsletter is published, our Year 12 students will have just over 5 weeks left of sec-ondary schooling. It is vital for all of them, whether they be undertaking VCE or VCAL, to ensure that they are putting their best foot forward, ensuring that all work is complete and that they are giv-ing themselves the best opportunity for success in up-coming exams. College Captains for 2020 Last week I received nine applications for College Captain for 2020. At this stage any of the appli-cants will be able to do an excellent job in the role if they are selected. Students will now undergo an interview next week which will be followed by a presentation to the student body the following week. The final decision, which includes a student and staff vote, should be known by the end of this term. I wish all the candidates all the very best of luck over the next two weeks.

Mission to Mars

On Friday the 23rd August, St. Arnaud Year 8 students travelled to the Victorian Space

Science Education Centre in Melbourne.

It was a very early start for students, leaving the school at 6am, but we arrived at the

centre in good time.

Upon arrival, students were divided into two mission teams – Viking and Mariner –

then within these teams, divided further into Mission Control and the Expeditionary

team.

When the Expeditionary team ‘landed’ on the surface of Mars – all wrapped up in their

‘astronaut suits’ – they were monitored and

guided in their duties by the Mission Control

team, who were located in a surveillance room,

watching all action on video cameras and com-

municating with the members on the surface

via two-way radio.

Everyone had an allocated duty, whether it was

as Commanders, Engineers, Chemists, Physi-

cists, Geologists or Biologists. Depending on

what duty they had, students performed vari-

ous tasks, collected samples and performed ex-

periments to collect important data.

After a brief recess break, the Expeditionary

and Mission Control teams swapped roles.

Both teams were evacuated from the surface

within a time limit: the first due to an oncoming

dust storm, and the second due to a spike in so-

lar radiation.

After lunch, students undertook analysis of the

collected samples and data in order to under-

stand the history of Mars,

thereby developing a

knowledge of its present

and future conditions.

They used a variety of

experimental techniques

and machinery to analyse

rock samples and data in

a systematic fashion.

After a very busy 12-hour

day, we arrived back in

St. Arnaud around 6pm.

All students should feel

proud of the manner in

which they conducted

themselves, and perhaps

it inspired some future

Mars colonisers.

This year the Broader Horizons Program was organised differently, we had all students

participating at the same time in the three areas of Agriculture, Local Government and

Health. One day each week for four weeks the students attended their chosen field.

The first three sessions that the students participated in were hands on with students

spending time at the:

Hospital looking at all aspects of the running the services including Health

Promotion, Social Work, Community Nursing, Occupational Therapy and many more.

Local Government departments, planting with the Parks and Gardens staff, helping

out and the Children’s Precinct and Kindergarten, and undertaking a media

component in Stawell.

Agricultural industry with visits to Agrimac, Agstrike, Elders, Ridley, Hendy’s

Transport and Rivalea.

The last session the students went on a tertiary experience, with the Agriculture students

visiting Longerenong and the Health and Local government students visiting La Trobe

University Bendigo to learn the different possibilities are available to obtain the training

required to undertake some of these jobs.

Thanks to the NCLLEN for organising and helping the Secondary College to run this very

beneficial program.

The Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly held its annual Active Girls Brunch event at the

Holy Trinity Lutheran College on Friday, 23rd August. Eight St. Arnaud Secondary Col-

lege Year 7 girls travelled to Horsham for the event. The Horsham YMCA held the very

first session of the day which focussed on Body Balancing exercises, which was aimed at

both centering and challenging the girls. The following speaker was AFLW star Kaitlyn

Ashmore, who outlined how she first came about her football experiences and her career

highlights to date. Originally hailing from Ballarat, Kaitlyn’s talk was inspirational and

it was wonderful to hear what opportunities she took advantage of in Western Victoria.

Her talk led into a session with 7 local sporting role models and WRSA ambassadors

ranging in age from 15-18 years. The sports that the girls represented on a local level

were triathlons, netball, basketball, football, equestrian and athletics. The girls were

open and honest about how they balance life, work, school and sporting commitments,

and they gave a fantastic insight to the support that the Wimmera Regional Sports As-

sembly offers to young people. It was great to network with other schools over a light

lunch and to hear from the local ambassadors. We really appreciated the event and

would encourage students to seek out opportunities for their sporting endeavours through

the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly based out of Horsham. Rebecca McIntyre is ap-

Primary school teachers educate primary school children by planning and conducting an education programme to develop literacy and numeracy, as well as the physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth of their students. Primary school teachers are usually trained to teach the whole curriculum. Some undertake further studies to become specialist primary teachers who develop and teach programmes for students with special needs, rural and isolated children or children for whom English is a second language. In some schools, primary school teachers teach languages other than English, if qualified.
