WELCOMEHistoric Longerenong College is in the heart of the Wimmera, western Victoria’s rich broadacre agricultural region, renowned for its contrasting landscapes and people as well as its reputation as a food bowl.

The 1070-hectare College, a 10-minute drive from the region’s capital Horsham, dates back to 1889 and incorporates a working farm and land-management enterprises and projects within its course structures. It produces crops, wool, prime lambs and cattle, incorporating sustainability and conservation programs.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL... FROM PRINCIPAL TO STUDENT AND THE OTHER WAY AROUNDHaving worked at Longerenong College for more than 25 years, it’s fair to say I’m more than a little attached to the place. I completed my agricultural degree at the College and then worked in the poultry industry for more than three years before being offered a job as the College Poultry Farm Manager and then a number of years as a teacher in animal production.

I remember attending Open Day when I was in my final year at Donald High School and by the end of the day I knew I had to go to Longerenong College. It was the people and the feel of the place that drew me in so quickly. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would one day be Head of Campus, a position I’ve held since 2009.

As the College continues to grow and prosper, I never tire of welcoming new students to the College and what drives the staff and myself is the success of our graduates in industry. We are extremely proud that Longy students are able to hit the ground running in a vast range of exciting and fulfilling agricultural careers.

I graduated from Longerenong with a Diploma in Agricultural Services in 1996 and articulated across to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science, Agriculture in 1999. I grew up on a family broadacre property at Donald and pursued agricultural research and science rather than going into the ag service industry or back to the family farm. I first worked with the DPI as a faba bean extension officer, from there became a TopCrop agronomist and now I’m involved with barley. Longerenong provides life skills as well as an acute awareness of the many layers of agriculture. There is camaraderie, and the opportunity to meet people from across Australia is invaluable.

College combines both hands-on work with academic business skills. Life is all about experiences and one of the important things about Longy is that it provides an opportunity for people who might be reluctant to move from their comfort zones to explore their potential.

LIFE AT LONGYStudents at Longerenong College make lasting friendships. You not only make close associations with fellow students and teaching staff, but tradition insists you become part of Wimmera and Horsham district communities. In short, it’s about mateship and being involved.

District and regional football, netball, cricket, tennis and various other sporting organisations abound and Horsham has all the modern shopping, recreation and social conveniences of a progressive regional centre. Grampians National Park, a must for bushwalking, camping or sightseeing enthusiasts is only half an hour’s drive from the College. Internationally acclaimed rock-climbing destination Mt Arapiles is also a short trip down the Wimmera Highway and then there other attractions such as the Little Desert National Park and various Wimmera towns and settlements.

Longerenong College is relatively close to many major provincial cities such as Ballarat and Bendigo and is close enough to Melbourne and Adelaide to make big-occasion trips to sport, music or art events.

Dormitory-style furnished single rooms allow privacy but shared kitchens, lounge and social rooms, a gymnasium, swimming pool and tennis courts promote important interaction and collegiate community spirit. CERTIFICATE IV IN AGRICULTUREDeveloping your knowledge of what makes broadacre-agricultural industries tick forms the basis of this two year course. This course is designed to provide practical training for farm operation across various agricultural industry sectors. This course is not confined to the classroom and provides students with hands on skills and learning experiences.

Students spend the first year obtaining a Certificate II and III in Agriculture and progress to the Certificate IV in the second year. At the end of the program you will graduate with both qualifications. The course carries Australian National Training Authority accreditation and has Rural Training Council of Australia endorsement. Longerenong College offers Farm Apprenticeships for Certificates II, Ill and IV in Agriculture as well as School Based New Apprenticeship Certificates II, Ill and IV integrated into years 10, 11 and 12 of secondary school studies. This is ideal for students from family farms or anyone interested in a career in Agriculture .

Wool classing training through Longerenong College enables participants to develop the skills and knowledge required for the preparation of the whole clip to a uniform standard that meets industry requirements.

Participants will undertake a training program delivered on a flexible part-time basis at Longerenong College. AHC20116VOCATIONAL EDUCATION TRAINING CERTIFICATE II IN AGRICULTURE (VETIS)Each year students from regional schools can elect to study VET Certificate II n Agriculture (VETiS) at Longerenong College.

The aim of the program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to achieve units of competence that wiII enhance their employment prospects in a range of rural industries. These include intensive animal production, cropping, broadacre grazing and agribusinesses.

Students undertake practical skill training such as weighing cattle, soiI testing, welding, tractor and 4-wheel motorbike driving, wool handIing, testing for weevils in grain, and stock handIing.

The program is delivered both on and off the job in a partnership arrangement between Longerenong College, businesses and participating schools. Students attend Longerenong College every second Wednesday.

Students are required to undertake 200 hours of structured workplace learning. While students can elect to undertake this learning on the ‘family’ farm, the preference is for students to find structured workplace learning away from the family farm so you can experience real-Iife employer and employee relationships..

COUNTRY LIFE PROGRAMThe fast pace of people on the move and constant hustle and bustle of metropolitan life can be a daunting experience for young people who have grown up in a rural environment. Being suddenly thrust into the concrete jungle of noise, lights, traffic and action to pursue a career, studies or a change of lifestyle can initially be frightening and eye-opening.

But what about children who have grown up in metropolitan, suburban or urban environments and have never experienced rural lifestyles, attitudes or people? Is it the same for them?

Longerenong College explores this idea with its Country Life program, which invites teenagers to gain better understanding and experience of rural life to get a taste of ‘country’. Students leave ‘the big smoke’ behind for a few days to go on tours and get involved with various programs and activities while visiting the College.

Teenagers from Mentone Grammar school in Melbourne are among those to visit the College each year to ‘get their hands dirty’. The program is open to schools throughout Australia.
