THE TURNING POINT (Virtual Book-Study Group) Eight Encounters With Jesus That Will Change Your Life

The Gospel of John was written with a special purpose – so that you and I can encounter Jesus personally. In The Turning Point, a study by Dr. Allen Hunt, you will focus on eight people who meet Jesus in the nitty gritty of everyday life. The study of these encounters guides us on a meaningful journey to help us know Jesus more intimately in our own life.

Please join us (virtually) for an eight week study beginning on Thursday, July 9th at 11 am, continuing every Thursday morning for the remaining seven weeks. Please contact the front office or email Katherine at [email protected] to enroll. Books are available through both Dynamic Catholic and Amazon.

Today’s Readings are all about Discipleship

and Stewardship

Today’s readings take us back-to-basics. The First Reading shows us the necessity and power of hospitality. The Second Reading reminds us of the importance of our Baptism. And, in today’s Gospel, Christ teaches us how to live daily life as His disciples. Our First Reading, from 2 Kings, tells the story of a woman who showed loving hospitality to a visitor, inviting him to dinner with her family and arranging a room for him in their home so that he would have a comfortable place to stay during his travels through her town. She reached out to the man in a simple and practical manner to make him feel welcome. That is the essence of Christian hospitality. As it turns out, this man was the prophet Elisha. He rewarded her kindness by interceding with God to obtain for her the miracle of a baby boy after long years of infertility. In our Second Reading, from the Letter to the Romans, St. Paul reminds us of the power of our Baptism. He says that through Baptism “into Christ Jesus” we were both buried with Christ and now are alive in Christ. We are literally new creations, marked for all eternity as one of His own. Our Lord Himself proclaims in a rather shocking way in our Gospel passage from Matthew: “Whoever loves father or mother… son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” And, “Whoever finds his life [by living for oneself] will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” How can an all-loving Lord say such things? Precisely because He is the source of all love. We can only love others, and even ourselves truly, if we allow ourselves to be emptied of self-love … and filled with God’s love.

This is why our Lord tells us we must “lose our lives.” Putting ourselves or others above God simply cannot give us the ultimate fulfillment and peace of soul that we all want. Only God can do that. Only loving God first and living for Christ … “losing our life” … can do that.

But how do we know if we love God more than “father or mother or son or daughter”? Jesus tells us in the next verses: it is precisely through loving actions towards others, loving them as if they were Christ, that we demonstrate our love for Christ.

So, we have come full circle, starting with the importance of hospitality and putting God first in our lives as Intentional Disciples of Christ through our Baptism. When we put God first by serving others as if we were serving Christ Himself, we can transform a self-centered life and we find our true fulfillment.

LIFE UPDATE: Father Bill Nadeau It was last Thanksgiving—with mixed feelings—that I concluded 14 years as pastor of St. Francis and began to live my life of retirement. In truth, priests don’t retire, but slip into a life of “reduced ministry.” That is exactly what I have been doing the past 6 months. Fr. Chris asked me share with you “How and what am I doing in retirement?” In one word, “excellent.”

Health wise, I am doing great. I still exercise daily and try to stay fit. I don’t paddle as often as when I lived at the lake and I do miss that a lot. However, I have taken up playing pickle ball, which is very popular and trendy in the valley. Thought I would be on the golf course a lot more, but that isn’t happening. I was celebrating weekend Masses and teaching Bible classes at the Nevada State Correctional facilities in Carson before the COVID 19 closed down the volunteer ministry. With the pandemic I have been sheltering with God and celebrating Masses at home with Fr. Bob Daigle. Fr. Bob has become dependent upon my caretaking abilities, as has my sister. Her memory loss is much more severe than Fr. Bob’s. I have a one-bedroom home in Gardnerville and Fr. Bob has a small home less than 10 minutes away from where I live. Rather than maintain two homes, we have decided to sell each of our homes, and are currently having a home built that will suit each of our needs. We are hopeful of having the home completed and moved into by the end of September. When this happens and the pandemic is over, we will have an open house to which you will be invited. Since the limited opening of the Reno Diocesan Churches, I have been helping out at St. Therese in Carson and St. Gall’s in Gardnerville when they need assistance with weekend Masses. While I am getting older, I judge that I’m not getting slower. Thank you God! Being a retired priest has been busier than I anticipated, but I enjoy what I am doing. I am an active member of the Suicide Prevention Board of Directors, which has been demanding, especially during this pandemic and racial tension. 2020 has definitely been a year of new perspectives. The pandemic has changed all of our lives in countless ways. I have been forced to start live streaming and zooming and learning new technology. I continue however, to avoid Facebook and blogging. I keep my mind and body challenged and active, so the perils of dementia or Alzheimer’s keep their distance. Healthy priests really don’t retire—especially from what they find so fulfilling, rewarding and joyous. I am still on my same spiritual journey, but now with more freedom and time to grow closer to my personal savior Jesus Christ and to continue to pray for all of you intentional disciples. Blessings, Father Bill

Me he visto obligado a transmitir en vivo y hacer zoom y aprender nuevas tecnologías.

Bendiciones,

Father Bill
