At the last few Board meetings there has been considerable discussion (both formal and informal) about problems confronting MISGA. Most of these problems are probably fallout from the poor economy of the past 5 years. It is possible that as the economy recovers, these problems will be lessened. Yet this situation does raise an important question: Does the MISGA model still work? Overall membership is down and we have lost some clubs. Mixer costs continue to rise which is negatively affecting participation. Some clubs, desperate for cash, are offering special deals to the public at a substantially lower cost than our mixers. On the eastern shore there is a competing organization that offers outings at a variety of clubs at lower cost than our mixers. And even the Maryland State Golf Association has gotten into the act, offering special deals at many of our clubs. Quite frankly, there is increasing competition for the senior golfers’ money. So does our model still work in this environment? The model basically is as follows: • waiver of greens fees, • non-competitive format with the home club members acting as hosts to the visitors, and, • a strong emphasis on interclub fellowship in golf.” (MISGA History) Reciprocity was an important principle underlying this model. Your club waived green fees for the visitors, and their club waived green fees when you visited their club. The benefit to each club was quite clear. A large number of golfers rent carts and have lunch on an otherwise slow golf day. Lunches became traditional as part of the emphasis on the social aspects of the events and building fellowship among golfers. Lunches are in most cases also a source of revenue for the clubs. In recent years, the principle of reciprocity has been relaxed, and many clubs promote a larger number of players at their mixers by allowing MISGA members from non-scheduled clubs to participate. And some clubs have broken from the strict home and home format by inviting visiting clubs to more than one mixer. But the general idea of reciprocity remains. Can we find ways to reduce the costs of mixers? Can we, for example, eliminate the lunches? I see nothing in the constitution and by-laws to prevent a club from hosting a mixer that does not include lunch. Whether other clubs would want to schedule you is another matter. But perhaps clubs could raise this issue at their Division reps meetings. It is important to keep our mixer costs in perspective. For example, to play at a private club as a guest can cost $75 in green fees, another $20 for a cart, and if you throw in lunch you are talking about a total of $110. For the same package, mixer fees are less than $50. We have a variety of different clubs and types of clubs, many of which face unique challenges. In response the basic model for MISGA has been relaxed over time, but not significantly changed. I believe it is still relevant today. We can continue to tweak the system to allow clubs to respond to the specific challenges they face. But radical surgery is not necessary. Mike Urquhart, Kenwood Golf and Country Club

MISGA At A Crossroads? Quite frankly, there is increasing

competition for the senior golfers’ money. So does our model still work in this environment? The model basically is as follows:

• waiver of greens fees, • non-competitive format with the home club members acting as hosts to the visitors, and, • a strong emphasis on interclub fellowship in golf.” (MISGA History)

Reciprocity was an important principle underlying this model.

Carol Boardman Scores Hole-in-Zero (Net)

At a Mixer at Kenwood Golf & Country Club on July 23, 2013, Carol Boardman, of Compass Pointe Golf Club, shot a Net-Zero on Hole #3, a 140-yard, par 3. Playing from the regular Ladies Red Tees (not Senior Ladies), Carol used a Driver and Putter to score a Birdie 2, with two handicap strokes. Fortunately, ace photographer Tom Tarpley was present to record the momentous occasion. Eat your heart out, Dick!

Bill Rapson April 17, 1936 - July 3, 2013

Bill Rapson, 77, of Hobbit's Glen Golf Club passed away in his sleep on July 3, 2013. He was the Hobbit's Glen seniors’ treasurer for the past six years. Bill loved golf, gardening, and traveling with wife Mary. They were frequent participants in MISGA's various flings and frolics over the past several years, where they made many friends. Bill was always in good spirits, despite several physical ailments. He will be missed by his friends both at Hobbit’s Glen and throughout MISGA.

-- Jim Wilcox, Asst. Club Rep

Bruce Touse April 11, 1930 - July 3, 2013

A long-time member of Patuxent Greens Golf Club, Bruce was always an enthusiastic golfer, and avid hunter. We frequently carpooled to MISGA Mixers, especially those in Division II, where traffic was favorable both going and coming. Bruce served as Handicap Chairman 1996-1997 and as Rules Chairman 1998-2006. He received the Longevity Award in 2007 for the oldest member (78) not previously recognized. In 1995, in addition to winning low net in his flight, he received the coveted Sandbagger Award for overall low net. Again, in both 1999 and 2000, he was low net in his flight and Runner-Up Sandbagger overall. We will miss his cheerful and

friendly demeanor. -- Byron Keadle, Asst. Club Rep

Al Craig 1926 – July 19, 2013

Al Craig moved to Leisure World in 1985 and quickly became associated with MISGA. He became the MISGA co-representative in 1988 and has served as the Leisure World representative since 1994. A World War II Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater. Al came to the Washington, D.C. area in 1959, and played golf for over 20 years at the University of Maryland, before moving to Leisure World. Al has played all the MISGA DIV IV courses, as well as several other MISGA Club courses countless times. Al was named DIV IV representative of the year in 2002, and was recognized as the

longest serving representative at the DIV IV Holiday Luncheon in 2009. He stepped down as the MISGA Rep in 2012, but continued to help and advise. Al did everything with precision and good humor over his years in MISGA. To summarize Al’s accomplishments in the words of a fellow MISGA player and rep from another club: “The times that I played in Mixers at Leisure World, they were always a pleasure and well organized.” -- Sperry Storm, Leisure World Club Rep

Piney Branch Golf Club For those of us who go back to the old days. Bill was a MISGA man through and through. No job too small or too large for him to tackle. Never a complaint, just let's get it done and you can take all the glory. When you read the history of MISGA, think of Bill. A long suffering has ended. Our sympathy to his family and thanks for a job well done.

-- Tom Tarpley, Dir. Div. II

The Golfer’s Handicap Responsibility When we talk about handicaps we are usually talking about the need to post all of our scores so that we have an accurate handicaps. The golfer also has another responsibility – to make sure that the handicap he is provided in any event or tournament is correct. Under USGA rules a golfer (or two man team) can be disqualified from a tournament for handing in a scorecard that has an inflated handicap. For example, if you are entitled to 10 strokes, but the scorecard incorrectly gave you 15 strokes, you can be disqualified if you do not correct this mistake. Ignorance is not a defense, nor can you escape disqualification by blaming it on the staff that prepared the card. It is your responsibility to make sure it is correct. If you notice that handicap is incorrect (either to high or to low) immediately contact the pro to get a corrected scorecard. Mike Urquhart, Kenwood Golf and Country Club

ABCD Tournament

2013 - MISGA PAST PRESIDENTS (ABCD) CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

On Monday, August 19, 2013, picturesque Norbeck Country Club in Rockville, MD played host to this year’s MISGA state ABCD championship tournament. 98 very gifted veteran men golfers representing 36 of MISGA’s 63 clubs motored from all points of the compass to compete for the honor of being crowned MISGA’s Gross and Net individual grand champions. Weather-wise, the sky was mostly overcast with a temperature in the low 70s. The course was in immaculate playing condition with greens that could be classified as a wee speedy. Playing conditions could not have been better. The par 72 course measured 5,790 yards with a course rating of 68.1 and slope of 124 from the forward (gold) tees. Playing time ranged from “first in” at 4h 30m to “last in” at 5h 20m.

After all the scores were posted, the Gross Grand Champion title and trophy were captured by veteran linkster Bob Burd (Rookery North – Div. I). He posted a scorching 73. By a single stroke, he nosed out Jeff Allen (last year’s champ from Wild Quail – Div. I) and John Flickinger (Norbeck – Div. IV). With this victory, Bob Burd has now won the MISGA Gross Grand Champion title for a record 4th time.

Gross), Gary Manion, (ABCD Tournament Coordinator), Clark Sisson, (Norbeck CC Head Golf Pro)

The Net Grand Champion side of the tournament provided another hotly contested championship battle. At the finish line, old smoothy Paul Johnston (Green Hill- Div. V) posted a

blistering 64 to nip wily Gary Manion (Norbeck – Div. IV) by one stroke to seize the Net Grand Champion title and trophy.

This tournament was established in 1991 as a vehicle to honor and recognize MISGA’s past presidents who have devoted so much of their time and efforts to promote the mission and objectives of the organization. This year, six past presidents and the current president participated. They are: 1997 – C.J. Myers; 2001 – Charlie Fieldhouse; 2006 – Tom Tarpley; 2008 – Bob Turner; 2009 – Byron Keadle; 2011 – Tom Taylor and current – Mike Urquhart.

Many thanks and praise must go to the entire staff of Norbeck Country Club. Their hard work and efforts provided MISGA with a splendid tournament. Vast applause and a multitude of thanks go to GM Neil Griggs for allowing MISGA to stage the tournament at Norbeck. Quality performance always begins with the leadership at the summit. Many thanks and gratitude must go to Norbeck’s genial and enthusiastic Head Pro Clark Sisson, his very capable assistants Mike Grantham and Andrew Stenger and the entire pro shop staff. They ensured the success of all golf related activities. Special thanks and accolades go to Course Superintendent Jay Nalls and his gifted course management team. The course was in an impeccable playing condition .. especially those slightly speedy greens. Many thanks and kudos must go to Catering Director Charlotte Kates (who was everywhere doing everything) and Executive Chef Dylyn Coolidge and their entire dining and bar staffs. They provided an excellent pre-golf cookout luncheon with all the trimmings. Next was the relaxing and most pleasant post-golf cocktail hour with appropriate bevvies and hors d’oeuvres. As for the awards banquet, the senior contestants were feted to a devotee’s double entrée feast (filet & shrimp) with equally tasty sides and apt beverages .. the wine was a special added feature. The banquet was a true epicurean’s delight.

The success of this year’s tournament could not have been accomplished without the attentiveness, efforts and management skills of MISGA’s Club Rep and Tournament Coordinator Gary Manion. His performance at the helm was no less than outstanding. He was ably assisted by jack-of-all-trades Frank Lacey. They graciously volunteered their time and effort with the many tournament related activities. MISGA offers them a multitude of kudos, thanks and its wholehearted gratitude. 2-Man Tournament

2013 - MISGA 2-MAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT On Monday, August 26, scenic Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, MD became the battlefield for this year’s MISGA 2-man team championship tournament. 100 golden-aged and skillful golfers (fifty 2-man teams) represented 31 of MISGA’s 63member clubs. In early morning, the senior golfing warriors hit the highways and by-ways of Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania to compete for the title and honor of being crowned MISGA’s Gross and Net 2-man team Grand Champions. The day’s gorgeous weather included abundant sunshine with temperatures ranging between the high 70s and low 80s. Prospect Bay’s magnificent course was in pristine condition and was complemented by firm and true greens. No one could ask for better playing conditions. From the forward (gold) tees, the par 72 course measured 5,741 yards with a course rating of 66.8 and a slope of 119. Playing time ranged from “first in” at 4h 20m to “last in” at 4h 55m.

After the final foursome had posted their scores, two veteran teams had tied for the Gross crown by shooting a sizzling 67. There-upon, Robert Johnson & Al Green (National at Tantallon - Div. VI) and Charles Gouert & Bob Burd (Rookery North - Div. I)

drove out to the #18 tee box (par 5 - 447

yards - #1 handicap hole) for a sudden-death playoff. On the first play-off, Al Green sunk a 30+ foot birdie putt to extend the playoff. On the second playoff hole (#18 again), Bob

Burd made a short birdie putt to capture Gross Grand Champions title for his team. On the Net side of the tournament, Chris Fanning & Jeff Gasiorowski (Fairway Hills - Div. VI) shot a scorching 56 to seize the Net Grand Champions title by 3 strokes over last year’s net

champions Patrick Normyle & Dave Carney (Rattlewood - Div. II).

We will try to provide cooler weather next year. Many thanks to all who participated and who helped put on this event.
