YOU WOULD have thought a mature market such as MI would have been through its period of consolidation.

Every market goes through that cycle of

are established and are then eventually taken over until you end up with only a handful of corporates controlling a portfolio of well-loved brands.

We’ve had all that. Many years ago. Which is why it is now rare for brands to change ownership and even rarer for a new brand to challenge the status quo.

The economic situation may have changed that, with Fender either axing or

to new distribution agreements or owners and, elsewhere, audio and MI specialist TC Group also up for sale. There’s a bit of a shake up going on at the moment. It’s by no means an earthquake but it’s certainly a tremor that shows the market isn’t

Takamine looks like it will be the latest line that Fender has decided it can do without and will be looking for a new home. Meanwhile, clever Danish audio innovator TC Group is looking to move up to a new level with a new owner or new

funding, clearly feeling its current situation limits its ambitions. Which is great news for the market. MI is desperate for new ideas and companies that can

invent and not merely repackage.

A resurgent Takamine, a buoyant Guild and a more ambitious TC Group has to be good news

for the market.

Group dynamicsFollowing the TC Group’s announcement that it expects to have

year, we caught up with Anders Fauerskov, CEO of the Danish audio giant, to ask him about the how and the why?…

ANALYSIS

What’s the rationale behind the sale? This is about generating capital to achieve further growth, I assume? “We’ve seen annual growth of ten per cent on average in the past years, and forecast the same growth under the current ownership. However, we have an opportunity to grow

backing. That, combined with the wish for some shareholders to exit, is the main reason for putting the company up for sale.”

Is a sale to a venture capitalist your favoured option, or are you expecting a competitor to make an offer for TC?“We have no favoured option, and have interest from both types of companies.”

Assuming the deal happens, how would that change what TC can achieve? “This will depend on who buys the company, but there is no doubt that a sale will result in a strengthening of the company and higher growth building on our strength of making highly innovative products.”

What areas do you think TC needs to strengthen? “Interestingly, we have opportunities to strengthen all of our market areas.”

Are there any sectors you think TC should be operating in that it currently isn’t? “There are several options for taking on new areas, but for the time being we have plenty of growth and expansion opportunities and plenty more to offer in our four markets: Install and Tour, Broadcast and Production, Residential, and MI.”

As successful as it currently is, has TC

restrictions? “Historically, only to a limited extent. But moving forward, we’d not be able to realise the true potential of the company under the current ownership, where additional funding and additional synergies are limited.”

Are market conditions right for a deal of this size? “Yes. Audio market conditions are good at the moment for innovative companies, and the audio M&A scene is currently very active due both to capital availability generally, as well as a changing competitive landscape in the Audio Industry, resulting in a strategic need for many companies to strengthen their position through acquisitions.”

What are you expecting the company to be valued at?

And what’s your current take on the shape of the MI market in the UK and Europe? “The effect of a sale will of course depend on the acquirer. But, generally, we are very

musical instrument market, which has grown rapidly for us over the course of the past

with a product ideas catalogue, which is enormously long. “The main effect of a sale of TC Group for our MI division probably is going to be that we can execute those plans and ideas faster than we otherwise are able to.”

SOME 200 DELEGATES representing industry suppliers and retailers gathered for a day of inspiring key-note speakers, training sessions and general networking.

Musikmesse was the headline sponsor with NAMM sponsoring the Professional Development aspect of the day. Other exhibitors ranged from Allianz insurance, Birketts (lawyers to the industry), Velta Shipping, MI Pro, the Musicians’ Union, Take it Away, VoodooUp and Intrepid Security.

David Hamid gave an exceptional talk on future trends for the industry and retailing in general. This included a no punches approach to what our industry must do to survive.

Larry Thomas concentrated on the need for MI to present a retailing

its specialist status (this

included some amazing pictures of shops from around the world).

Finally, Birketts held a

lively and controversial talk on European Competition Law that generated over an hour’s worth of questions.

The MIA also took the opportunity to facilitate updates on the new MIA newsletter, the new Industry Statistics service, the Industry Apprenticeship scheme (MIRTAS), the Music Venue Trust campaign, Support My Music Teacher

campaign and the newly launched Trusted Music Store brand to support UK music shops.

After a long day of learning and networking, the industry convened in the Euston Flyer pub.

Here’s what some of the attendees had to say about the day.

“One of the best conferences I’ve been to for a while - and great speakers too”, Martin Janes, Bella Productions.

“Congratulations on a superb conference. It was extremely valuable, having

contacts and leads,” Adrian Shaw, Icondia.

“Just wanted to congratulate you on a great conference. The content was fantastic and it was clear from the conversations I had that attendees were really valuing it,” Rob Last, Future Publishing.

IT’S BEEN A busy year for Orange. The iconic amp brand has not only doubled its production efforts in the Asian market with the opening of a second manufacturing plant in

into both the beginners guitar pack market and the education sector. Add to that a steady drip feed of high tech new product, namely the Valve Testers and OPC (Orange Personal Computer) lines, and you can see why 2014 has been a year of

Covering 3,000 square metres and representing a continued investment in global expansion from Orange, the company’s new factory in the Zhejiang Province of China, which opened back in July, will aim to meet unprecedented growing sales demand, while a state of the art training school for staff at all levels of manufacturing has also been incorporated to ensure consistently high stnadards of production.

“We built a factory about eight years ago in a place called Zhejiang, which is about 100km from

Cliff Cooper. “As business grew and grew we got overloaded and, luckily, we had bought the land on either side, because it’s very expensive now – property in China – especially if it’s near Shanghai. So, on one

of the other sides, we decided to construct another factory, which is approximately the same size as the

“The new factory should double our production in the region,” he continues. “This market is an emerging one, as is India and South America, and I think that, although it is not an enormous market at

present, it is growing very, very quickly; over the past three years we have probably grown by about 150 per cent in China.

“It [the factory] will certainly increase sales,” he continues, “because we do get behind with production. The problem that we sometimes have is, if you’re making

cloth to measure, but when you’re

you can’t suddenly produce a large number of them.

distributing to the Asian market from China in order to bolster its international supply chain, while a third factory is already in the pipeline, such is the demand for Orange in the region.

“We are already planning to build another factory on the other side of our main factory in two years’ time, which will be the same size as the other two.

“We are also distributing from China to Asia, now, so we have our company in Atlanta that supplies North and South America; we have

particularly good. The equipment is very popular here and this year at the show we have been visited by a lot of shops from China, but we also

come to see what products are on the market.

“We try to target the Chinese

So, which lines are currently capturing the imagination of the company’s Chinese consumer base?

“They really like the big stacks,”

America. It’s as if they’ve gone back 20 years! So, we are pushing those quite hard at the moment and, of course, the small entry-level combos.”

At the more technical end of the Orange product spectrum, its state

of the art Valve Testers have proved an even bigger hit than expected, says Cooper.

Launched back in 2013, the Valve Tester line utilises pioneering technology to match, test and grade valves, and is designed to be used by everyone from guitarists to rental companies to manufacturers, making the process of testing amp valves simpler than ever before.

“The Valve Tester is sold out worldwide now, which I didn’t expect. We’ve sold thousands of them. It’s a very clever product and we have world patents on it.

manufacturers are now using it, and what’s happening in China especially is that almost every shop has a Valve Tester and a sign on the door that offers free valve testing, but they limit it to two valves, otherwise people turn up with a whole box of them. That product is doing extremely well for us, especially in the States.”

of guitar starter packs. An already highly populated and competitive market, the decision to enter the sector was made on the condition that it was able to bring something new to the table, whilst still remaining affordable for beginners.

“The packs have been really successful and the guitars look fantastic. Normally, you might get a sample of a guitar, which is really good, and then when the production line comes they are not so good, But the production of these guitars is incredible – I think the guitar alone is worth two or three times the pack. It’s a really good guitar and we’ll be following it up with a bass guitar pack. The quality of the guitar is better than most I’ve seen in these packs – it plays nicely and has really good pickups.”

Though the company has made the headlines for a number of

departure of long-term managing director, Damon Waller.

Having spent more than a decade

is under no illusions as to the size of

adequate replacement.“He’d been talking about it for

quite a while and he decided that now would be a good time to move on. He has worked with us for 12 years and he’s done a very good job, and now he feels it’s time for him to try and work for himself. He’s experienced, he’s got the knowledge and I sincerely hope he does well. He had a good knowledge of overseas markets and that bought a lot to the brand - he signed us with some good distributors.

“We haven’t made any decisions as to a replacement yet. If we’re choosing a managing director it has to be the right person, as it’s such a big position.”

So, as 2014 draws to a close, what’s next for Orange? As the past 12 months have shown, the company looks set to continue identifying new areas of the market into which it can grow, building upon its heritage and expanding upon its multi-faceted product offering

“We are moving into the education business,” Cooper states. “We’ve developed this thing

which is essentially like a large

microprocessors that all talk to each other and it transposes into any key. It’s absolutely brilliant.

“We held back on it while we got patents and we now have world patents for it.”

And how, exactly, does it work? “The teacher has a wand that

transmits signal to the board – there are no wires – and whatever note they touch, it plays. And you can learn any instrument on it – piccolo, cello, vocals, drums, anything. We’ve shown our Chinese distributors the product and they are very keen to move that forward.”

As evidenced by its foray into new markets this year, it is Orange’s ability to balance the old with the new that underpins much of its ongoing success.

Where some manufacturers in this market can be found guilty of resting on their laurels when it comes to refreshing both their identity and product output, Orange

capitalise on its reputation as a historic British brand, whilst remaining relevant to modern day musicians of just about every style and genre.

And, with more new products expected over the coming months, it appears there is even further scope for growth in 2015.

We come to Music China every year now. It’s a really good show and this year has been particularly impressive. We have had visitors from China, as well as Europe and Korea.

ASPIRATIONAL INSTRUMENTS

For those in search of something at the higher end of the market, The 3616 Ozark Deluxe resonator guitar (RRP £735) features a bronze coated brass body, engraved with a decorative Hawaiian scene. With a mahogany neck and slotted headstock, the guitar is constructed to deliver optimised volume and tone and respond well to rhythm or slide playing styles. A loud, metallic tone, generated from a single inverted metal deluxe ‘speaker’ cone mounted within the brass body delivers enhanced tonal results. A suitable choice for accomplished guitarists looking to explore the unique sound and tonal qualities that a resonator has to offer, or resonator players looking for something a bit different, the 3616 aims to deliver superior performance in all areas. The all-solid brass design with ‘Biscuit’ bridge was highly favoured by Delta Blues players, due to the superior volume and dynamics, than those generated from wooden body resonator Guitars. The ‘Biscuit’ Bridge Single-Cone design gets its name from a small wooden disc found in the centre of the cone. MIA BUSINESS CONFERENCE

BUILDING ON ITS 2013 debut, the MIA Business Conference returned to the British Library Conference Centre in London on Wednesday, October 1st for its sophomore outing with an impressive line-up of speakers, backed by a programme of Q&As and training seminars.

With over 200 delegates in attendance, the event kicked off with a talk from retail entrepreneur, David Hamid, who offered some useful tips on how dealers in the MI sector should approach business in order to survive in today’s challenging market conditions.

Former Fender and Guitar Center chief, Larry Thomas, followed with a unique and insightful look at how retailers can excel by creating a strong visual identity and ensuring that their products are sold in the correct fashion.

The conference concluded with a fascinating presentation and subsequent Q&A session with

a strong focus on competition law,

the session sparked a lively debate with retailers and suppliers alike.

Elsewhere, the MIA updated attendees on a number of recent developments, including a new newsletter; the latest news on its Industry Statistics service; and the Support My Teacher campaign.

Commenting on the conference, Brian Cleary, joint managing director, Barnes & Mullins, said: “Congratulations, Paul McManus, and to all those involved, in today’s conference. Enjoyable, enlightening and informative.”

MUSIC CHINA 2014

WITH AN EVER-GROWING international reach, the Music China exhibition has gone from strength to strength over the past decade or so. For many, the show offers a unique opportunity to engage with a network of suppliers, manufacturers and retailers, with whom they might not always be able to connect with via the western mainstays that are NAMM and Messe Frankfurt.

Such is the appeal of the show these days that a new ninth hall was announced earlier this year in order to accommodate escalating exhibitor and visitor numbers, which, unsurprisingly, have topped 2013’s record-breaking outing.

Exhibitor numbers for this year’s event, which took place from October 8th-11th at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, rose 5.7 per cent from last year to 1,775 from across 30 countries and regions, while visitor numbers hit a record high of 71, 591 from across 83 countries and regions, representing a 4.3 per cent increase on 2013.

A quick glance at the line-up of British exhibitors further evidences the show’s burgeoning appeal to the western market.

Making its 12th appearance at the show, Tanglewood was on-hand

Studiomaster, Rotosound, ABRSM, Burns London, Cavendish-Broadwood Pianos, Denis Wick, G7th, JHS, Rockschool, Stentor Music, Albion, Marhsall, Orange, Ashdown Engineering, The Sound Post, Warwick Music, and a whole host of others.

Music China 2014 also served up an extensive programme of educational talks and seminars, including nine NAMM U sessions, all of which were standing room only.

In one of the event’s best-attended NAMM U sessions, Thomann president, Hans Thomann, made a rare public appearance to

history and its ascendency online; from its humble beginnings as a small independent store, through to its position as a dominant force on the global MI market.

MI business further. It’s important to be here; for major brands I really think that it is a good focus area. There are so many essential customers here.

“We have a lot of our distributors from other parts of the world here, and a lot of our retailers from other parts of South East Asia; it’s quite

exhibit here again; we plan to make this a regular event. Hopefully the noise issues can be resolved a little bit, because currently there is zero control, but the noise issue is something that needs a solution music industry show-wide.”

Mark Gooday, founder of Ashdown Engineering, said: “The show has been good - guitar amps are selling better, bass amps are selling better. And, attendance seems to be up, which is nice. The whole market here seems to be up.

“We’ve had visitors from all over the world; meetings with people from Indonesia, Korea, Scandinavia, and a lot of the big retailers are also out here. It’s a good show and you

seen before, so it’s an interesting market analysis.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Wick, of Denis Wick Products, was also keen

to extol the virtues of the show and the general state of the Chinese market: “This is our seventh time at Music China and it’s been one of the busiest shows ever. It’s great, because everybody seems to be familiar with our product now and it’s really found a foothold in the China market.

“We’ve met lots of young players and teachers and professors here and also our products have become much more affordable over time.”

Elsewhere, Adam Cox of Cavendish Pianos and Broadwood Pianos, commented: “We’ve had a really great show this year;

too sure about coming here, but it’s been absolulety fabulous. The stand has been really busy the whole time and we’ve had lots of people liking our pianos.”

While ever-challenging market conditions continue to blight the UK and mainland Europe, the MI market in China and South East Asia certainly apperas to be enjoying healthier climes. And, with sustained year-on-year growth for the show, it seems highly likely that Music China will grow further still in 2015.

JUNE 4TH, 1976 has gone down in history as date of near biblical

night upon which The Sex Pistols descended upon the city’s Lesser Free Trade Hall and single-handedly obliterated the rock ‘n’ roll rule book. Loud, shambolic and brimming with unbridled vitriol, the band’s performance inspired a small yet captivated crowd to form bands of their own with the realisation that the technical skills of the prog rock virtuosos of the time were, in fact, surplus to requirements.

A quick glance at the roll call of those in attendance that night and its cultural impact becomes all

and, of course, a young Peter Hook. The gig had a deeply profound

effect upon the impressionable youngster.Having never previously considered a career in music, the gig led Hook to form a band – Joy Division (the name would come later) - with Sumner that very night. And, as Sumner already owned a guitar, it was decided that Hook be appointed bass player.

“The day after the Sex Pistols gig,” he recalls, “I went to a

now, and said to the guy “I want a bass guitar,” and he said “which one?” I said “well, which one’s a bass?!” He picked me out a Gibson SG copy and it was absolutely

tuneful for me to have banged

some strings into a plank of wood.”However, for a group of young

certainly served a purpose.“It lasted a long time actually,

because it did make a racket and that’s all we were interested in. It was only when we got in the studio

were Joy Division – when Barney [Bernard Sumner] said “it’s out of tune, that, between the F and the

G”. I went “what’s an F and a G?”

‘wow, maybe this guitar is crap.’ “I bought another one – a Hondo

II, which was a Rickenbacker copy – for £99. Luckily for me it didn’t sound anything like a

tone of them. They’re too honky for me. I bought it from a shop in Stockport just round the corner from Strawberry Studios. I remember buying it and taking it

it with a clamp to hold the strings on the nut, which didn’t make the tuning much good, but I’ve got a really bad ear so Barney always had to tune it for me on stage. When they invented those foot pedal tuners I went fucking berserk and bought two straight away!”

Prior to that seminal Sex Pistols gig, Hook had barely acknowledged

With a limited understanding of how to amass a personal set-up with which to rehearse, a process of trial and error ensued.

“I’d never been in a music shop ‘til after that [the Sex Pistols gig], and it was only when I went to get

proper music shop. I remember

buying a Sound City 120 amp from the most famous music shop in

fortune. It was £120 and it was bloody awful. I remember taking it home and phoning Barney saying “I’ve bought this amp and it won’t work. I’ve got my guitar in it but I can’t hear anything.” He said, “did you buy a speaker?” and I went “oh fuck, hasn’t it got speakers?!” Then

which was an 18” bass speaker and it sounded awful, but I was over the moon. What a racket! I had a shit guitar, shit amp and a shit

for punk. It was perfect.”A punk player with scant regard

fashioned. All the staff had suits on and they were really nice because there was never anybody in playing Stairway to Heaven, so we really enjoyed going there and the guy was very helpful.”

While The Sex Pistols may have been responsible for inspiring him to pick up a bass, a developing Hook was now soaking up the

players of the time. All the while, Joy Division were starting to carve out a sonic identity of their own.

“I went to see The Stranglers

Burnel,” Hook remembers. “I thought he was the coolest thing I’d ever seen and his sound just blew me away. I remember waiting until the end of the gig to get near the front to go and write down what his set-up was. And it was a Vox TB18 cab with a HiWatt 100, so I went out and bought both.”

Hook’s sound was Joy Division

Hannett, whose techniques proved pivotal in creating the bands’ distinctive sounds.

and he said to me when we were doing Closer: “what you need is the best fucking amp in the world and you need to be as loud as fuck,” so he went out and showed me an Alembic FB2 preamp into an

playing style is one of the most widely lauded and, indeed, imitated in rock, pop and electro music. At the turn of the century, a number of emerging indie rock bands were labeled Joy Division copyists on account of their baritone vocalists and angular,

When the latter’s bassist, Carlos D, announced his departure from the band in 2010, the band appealed publicly via their website for potential replacements. Hook, who had acrimoniously split with New

And I got turned down! I also did it with the Smashing Pumpkins,

the live circuit with his band The Light, performing full albums chronologically in their entirety. However, he doesn’t consider The Light a band in the traditional sense, given his role as leader of the group.

“I haven’t got a band at the moment. I’m playing with The Light but I’m not actually in a band, because they are my band, I tell them what to do. It’s a different thing. I’ve not been in a band since 2006 because a band is mainly made up of compromise. And one of the biggest reasons

Barney thought compromise was something that you did. That was one of the big problems. He’d go: “compromise, let’s compromise. Go on, you have to do what I do.” I’m going: “that’s not fucking compromise, that’s a dictatorship!” But as you get older,

“I’m doing a track with Fun Lovin’ Criminals and working with two French bands: Nova Nova and Bejstil. I feel guilty when we [The Light] don’t write,

media thirst for new material, as it gets bootlegged, nobody pays for it, and you think ‘why have I locked myself away for the past six months and everybody just wants to hear Blue Monday. But, I remember Tony Wilson and Rob Gretton [Joy Division manager] always said the same thing: ‘The best song you’re ever gonna write is your next one. Just fucking get on with it!’”

With the VoiceSolo FX150, TC-Helicon has created

a multi-purpose system engineered to solve two of the most common problems for musicians: hearing themselves properly on stage and having a monitor that meets personal performance needs by giving direct control.

Featuring a custom designed 6.5” two-way coaxial driver from sister company Tannoy, VoiceSolo FX150 is built to deliver enhanced volume, musical clarity and premium full range punch, without losing any of its dynamics.

Vocalists will appreciate the addition of Vocal-Tone, TC-Helicon’s proprietary technology that automatically adapts to the singer’s voice. This adds automatic EQ, compression, de-essing and gating to vocals for a professional

sound. Nine reverb effects - taken from the company’s VoiceLive 3 processor – are also included.

Guitarists and other instrumentalists are covered too. Not only does VoiceSolo FX150 provide the Full Range Flat Response (FRFR) system for guitar, it also delivers deep bass, while users can assign independent reverb and EQ.

A one-button Edit control of all levels and parameters is incorporated, making dialing-in a personal mix simple. The Easy Grip mic-stand mounting system allows users to set up in seconds, with no additional attachments required. Coupled with extensive I/O options and a true stage monitor pass-thru, VoiceSolo FX150 provides a system suitable to a host of applications, from professional stage monitoring, to home practice whilst doubling as a full range music system too.

Major shake-up for Vintage Plus dealership structure

However, trade prices have been generally reduced across the board in order to maintain margins. Meanwhile, recommended retail prices across the Vintage Plus range have also been reduced as part of the shake-up in order to reposition them more appropriately against competition in the market.

Executive director of sales and marketing at JHS, Alan Smith, explained the new dealership structure.

“We know that we have more than 300 great instruments across the Vintage family brands (Vintage, Vintage Synergy, Pilgrim, Laka, Encore and Santos Martinez) but it is time for a refresh.

TO MOST TRADITIONAL retail businesses Amazon is a ruthless competitor. If you look beyond that, at it’s effect on the wider economy, Amazon begins to look more like the devil incarnate. Amazon represents predatory capitalism at its absolute worst. The company sucks the life out of every economy in which it operates and gives nothing, absolutely nothing, back.

The consumer blindly supports this corporate locust, why? Well Amazon is very, very good at what it does. It’s top of the Google search page, it’s cheaper than anyone else and your stuff turns up on time, every time. They even sort out problems with very little fuss. When the consumer turns off the BBC news after learning

about A&E department closures, schools that can’t afford teachers or councils

holes, he or she will sit at

the computer and press the ‘buy it now’ button being blissfully unaware that all these things are connected.

So what about

distributors within our sector? These are business people; surely they see the bigger picture? It would seem not. We are fast

running out of distributors who have the spine to say no to this scourge on our economy. Perhaps Amazon really doesn’t

get favourable discounts but since it works on a net

0.5% it hardly matters. Do these suppliers honestly think that they’ve entered into a mutually respectful business partnership? The

way to cut the distributor out of the value chain; the beautiful relationship will be over.

So what happens when a supplier says no? Amazon is a bully, and a number of distributors with enough guts to resist have found their products for sale on the site, with accurate pictures and products codes, priced at less than trade - even though they’ve never supplied Amazon. When a consumer buys this product they invariably get a counterfeit item, which looks like the real thing, but

it isn’t. This damages brand equity that might have taken decades to build. Of course, Amazon is publicly opposed to counterfeit product being sold on its site, but its relationship with ‘third party sellers’ makes interesting reading. Incidentally, you may want to Google ‘Lush Products and Amazon’ to see where saying ‘no’ to Amazon can ultimately lead.

So any distributor who’s feeling wooed by Amazon’s whispered sweet nothings, beware; you are making a pact with the devil. When it goes wrong, and it almost certainly will, your brands may well be worthless

arms of traditional retail particularly welcoming. To everyone else – don’t be part of the problem, close your Amazon account, now!

Nostalgia and heritage can be useful assets in

marketing a product and they can be useful tools for retailers to work with. I can therefore see why resurrecting a brand may appear to be a good business decision for

point of difference and gain a competitive advantage.

However, in an already saturated market, the new-old brand can struggle to gain

marketing investment and at this point it is really worth considering ‘is it worth it?’

That investment could instead be focused on making good product. It’s rare that I see a good reason to adapt our

are normally due to issues with our current brands, as opposed to a desire for a new one. On the occasion I do choose to adapt our portfolio, I scrutinise the quality of the product and consumer appetite. If a new-old brand ticks those boxes it gets a shot. But usually the heritage doesn’t create a strong enough point of difference to make a strong case.

The resurrection of historic brands seems to be a double-edged sword; it can

face, depending on the ethos of the manufacturer. If you have a good, solid product range with some heart and soul behind it, the use of a historic

brand’s kudos can provide a decent head start, picking up the old brand where it left off and building on what’s already been established.

Often, though, the use of an old brand is little more than fairy dust sprinkled on a mediocre product range.

This more often than not results in disaster and therefore destroys any brand equity that existed in

Do you welcome the resurrection of older, iconic brand names?

If this type of project is executed with some thought and

market research it can work. I think that Barry Gibson did a great job with Burns - well thought out and good quality guitars that turned out to have a very strong appeal to many musicians, especially with older players.

I’m amazed at how popular some of the limited editions are when we get them in second-hand, especially the Hank Marvin models.

Another old-new brand that has impressed me are the Kay re-issues. Taking the very best elements of the early collectable ‘real’ Kays and building them to a high standard that has appealed to the modern player looking for something a bit different to use on stage that sounds good.

There is real passion behind projects like this and you get the sense that they want to get it right and care about the end product.

Some brands become defunct for a reason - no one wanted them then

and probably won’t want them now. It’s critical to look deep into the integrity of these projects before committing to a dealership, especially if the target musician is too young to

around.

This question has arrived with such great timing. Recently, there was a

shining example of a dead horse that should have been left in its slumber being dragged by its rotten hoofs into the daylight.

The one and only question in my mind was ‘why’?

There has been some serious barrel scraping in our industry of late when it comes to reviving old brands and, although I can see good reason for bringing back amazingly successful blasts from the past, surely when they were pretty crap

point in doing so?Maybe the people involved in this

Maybe, in the coming weeks and month,

the MI market can look forward to

(although we all knew it was just “’Krap’ backwards!)

The truth of the matter is I know that it is becoming virtually impossible for people to come up with an original name that has not been registered already by someone else somewhere.

However, if there is a new product coming to market that is genuinely worthy of consideration, shouldn’t the perpetrators have at the very least made a little bit more of an effort when it comes to giving their product a name?

BEDFORD MAY NOT be particularly celebrated as a thriving centre of musical excellence but renowned songwriter/guitarist John Verity (of Argent fame) and stadium rockers The Quireboys both feature prominently in the town’s lively and vibrant live music scene. Plenty of good local music venues including the popular Sunday afternoon rock gigs at Esquire’s club also guarantee that there are enough events to keep even the most rabid musical appetites sated.

The Music Centre is Bedford’s main port of call for local musicians. Owner, Bruce Murray, and his long-standing store manager, Ross Anderson, state that their clientele extend from

Buckinghamshire, Northants, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. The demise of heavyweight local competitors like Machinehead Music in nearby Hitchin has surely boosted Music Centre’s catchment area, but Bedford’s relatively central location and its relative proximity to North London

and the Midlands also strengthens its position as one of the area’s go to music stores.

Like many of the more successful independents, Music Centre also offers music lessons and an in-house repairs service - “We can even repair washing machines!” Murray guffaws - alongside a rehearsal facility.

The store has been in its current Tavistock Street location since 1995 and Murray insists that his policy of continually expanding his product lines alongside the store’s wide range of services is a major factor to his store’s wide-scale popularity.

“The last shop was too small. You couldn’t display anything and we weren’t getting the footfall; it was dying a death. Our repair shop also helps because we can repair things here without having to send them away. We also have

the rehearsal facility and our guitar teacher (Max Milligan) is also upstairs, which plays a big part in getting people in here.”

As former tour manager for The Quireboys (his step-

lead guitarist) Murray has

seen his fair share of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, but his most cherished claim to fame is that he also played in a band alongside Freddie Mercury during their school days in Mumbai.

Regularly tracked down by Queen fans and documentary crews eager

Mercury’s early career, Murray is happy to reel

off stories of his youthful endeavours playing with Freddie, but MI Pro reluctantly has to get back to business.

Long serving manager Anderson explains that maintaining a watching brief on trends is crucial.

“A lot of people you talk to rail against change, but you have to embrace it and anticipate as best you can. You have to maintain an online presence and

price, whilst also trying to offer the best of both worlds in terms of a good localised service. Our service department helps bring people in and raises our

into the shop. If you are too expensive you won’t sell anything. You need to manage your overheads and pay the bills and make a living from the margins that you are making. There is nothing you can do about

you just have to manage it.”Asked about the changing

face of the UK distribution network and how it affects his business, Anderson is fairly open-minded.“As an independent I think that it’s easy to be scared of carrying high-end stock or different colours of a certain product, but you will lose sales if you don’t carry the right stock. Even though you might have to have your arm twisted to carry more stock, I feel that you will gain sales from it. In fact you need to carry a bit of high-end stock because, as we’ve seen with the starter market, people are more likely to go to Amazon or wherever for that entry-level stuff, but when someone is spending more and they’re not quite so sure of what to buy then they will be more likely to go to a specialist shop.”

Shanghai surpriseLAST MONTH, I made the long trip to Shanghai

time at the show, so as you can probably imagine, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Nine halls of predominantly Chinese and South East Asian brands, with a smattering of Western brands merely there to make up the numbers, perhaps? Well, no. Much to my surprise, this wasn’t the case, with a healthy contingent of British exhibitors

These ranged from the likes of general rock ‘n’ roll mainstays, such as JHS, Tanglewood, Ashdown and Burns on the guitar and amps front, to slightly more niche names, including Cavendish Pianos and classical specialist The Sound Post. There was also an assortment of educational bodies showcasing and promoting their services at the show, which was nice to see. What was particularly encouraging to hear was the overwhelmingly positive response from those British companies exhibiting at the show, with the vast majority earmarking it as a staple event on their

respective MI calendars. For many, the main attraction was the opportunity to introduce their products to a market

economical climes than those still blighting UK shores. The music market in South East Asia, and China especially, appears to be on the rise, so it’s little wonder overall attendance at Music China has grown consistently over the past few years. Indeed, this year saw the addition of a new ninth hall in order to accommodate its expanding exhibitor list and visitor footfall. With this in mind, it seems almost inevitable that both general and British attendance will increase once again next year, so

worse than consider making the journey in 2015. The only minor drawback to my trip was the tinnitus I expereinced after the third day of the show, such was the aural assault unloaded upon my ears. If there is one area the show could improve upon, it’s sound levels. No one needs 28 guitarists trying to out-noodle each other at once in the same room.

THE APPRENTICES

I am 20 years old from Bury, Greater Manchester and I am currently on a one year apprenticeship studying retail in the music industry at Forsyth Brothers Music Shop in Manchester.

university I took a year out to look for a job and applied for everything I could, but it was after several months of no replies that the Job Centre found me this apprentice scheme offered by MIRTAS. Whilst I

my local Air Cadet Band, I had never studied music. When I applied I was unsure whether I would be able to do the course as it seemed most people had studied music either at college or GCSE. However, I had an interview and everyone was welcoming and understanding. I

my employer allows me to be an interdepartmental staff member, so I learn about different aspects of music retail from CDs and sheet music, through accessories, to instruments. From my woodwind background I was introduced to a world of string instruments, such as bouzoukis, guitars and dulcimers that I would otherwise never know about.

When I started I was hoping to gain work experience and have something to do. I am returning to university but I hope I will be allowed to come back to work in the holidays. Beyond that I hope that the skills and

experience I have gained through the apprenticeship will make me more employable so it will be easier to get a job later on.

before working at Forsyth’s I had no real experience of time pressure or of things not going to plan. This apprenticeship has given me a much better insight into life and given me the

own fault for letting them come round, but I have a feeling that I may have accidentally sold the shop. I said in my column last month that I was looking to sell up but I didn’t really think it would happen so quickly. Or that anyone would actually be insane enough to buy it.

Knowing what I know now I suppose I should have seen it coming.

But that’s the marvellous thing about hindsight. It makes wise men of fools. You just can’t make it up. Actually, I say I might have accidentally sold the shop

but Jason is the one that we should really put the blame on. He thought that the guy that that had come round to have a quick shufty at the shop was a tourist that had come looking for guitars. Pretty soon they get talking and he starts

on about how the shop is really not doing so well and how I’m looking to get rid of it. Well, that’s not quite the truth, but it certainly piqued the guy’s interest.

I suppose I’m open to offers but telling the guy that we were living on bread and water hasn’t shown us in the strongest light or put us in the best bargaining position.

All I know is that I’ve now had a solid offer and that he doesn’t seem at all bothered by the collection of dust and dead insects that also make up some of our older stock items. It’s unfortunate that he’s an American because you can pretty much sell them anything.

Now, I’m left pondering the deal that’s on the table and whether or not I really want to jack it in to take up my pipe and slippers.
