MNUFC Returns to Allianz Field for Crucial GameMinnesota United hosts second-place Real Salt Lake in a critical game in the crowded Western Conference playoff race. The Loons sit one point behind the Claret-and-Cobalt but three points from dropping out of playoff position. This vital game will go a long way to securing not only a spot in the playoffs, but a home game in the opening round. Minnesota will need to continue its impeccable home form and take advantage of RSL’s road struggles to leapfrog back into second place. Interim Head Coach Freddy Juarez would love to snag a result on the road and give his team some breathing room in the standings as the season enters its final month.

First Half Deficit Undoes Loons in HoustonMinnesota United finished off its four-game road stretch against the Houston Dynamo, falling 2-0 in the Wednesday night matchup. The Dynamo controlled the majority of the game in the opening half and was able to net a pair of goals, one from former Loon Christian Ramirez, before the break. A few changes at halftime gave MNUFC better options going forward as it had the better share of chances in the second half. Ethan Finlay led the offensive push with two shots that were saved off the line and a goal that was called back by video review. Despite the push in the final minutes, Minnesota was unable to get on the board in Houston as it dropped three points to finish off the road trip.

Luke Mulholland played for Minnesota United during the NASL era of the club’s history. He joined the team late in 2011, helping it to the 2011 NASL Championship.

Miguel Ibarra, Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando have played together on the U.S. national team. Rimando has tended goal in all three of Ibarra’s appearances, starting on October 14, 2014 against Honduras. They then took the field together on February 8, 2015 against Panama, followed by a match against Mexico on April 15, 2015 where they were joined by Beckerman.

Abu Danladi, Tony Beltran, Erik Holt and Rimando all played college soccer for UCLA.

Holt and Danladi were teammates on the Bruins’ roster in 2105 and 2016.

Adrian Heath on the Importance the Players’ Reaction is Come Sunday “I think the individual performance for each player will be scrutinized by us and by the supporters because that wasn’t what we’ve been accustomed to of late. But we’re going to have to have a collective reaction to that result. We’ve put ourselves in a really good spot. Before the season started, would somebody have said [that with] five games left, three of which are at home, you’d be third or fourth in the Western Conference with a great opportunity of finishing in the playoffs, I think we would’ve taken that. But what we don’t need to do now is waste that really big result in LA. We have to capitalize on [the fact that] two of these next three games are at home and they are going to be huge for us.”

Heath on How Important Home Games are Now at Allianz Field “They’re always important but if you look at the teams that we are playing, they’re all in and around us as well. The next one is [Sporting] Kansas [City] who are still fighting for a spot [in the playoffs]. They’ve had a really good run of late so it’s not going to get any easier but let’s concentrate on Salt Lake and we’ve done well in terms of results but they’ve all been really tight and I don’t think anything is going to be changing on Sunday.”

Ethan Finlay on How MNUFC Will Look to Take Advantage of RSL“I think we just have to get back to what we do. It’s being in a great shape defensively. A lot of our results, home and away, have been a great block of four – two blocks of four behind the ball with the front two doing a really good job of showing us where to go. That’s first and foremost and then from there, from the attacking side is just getting our players on the ball in dangerous positions. Better crosses, getting our guys into pockets, whether it be our eight, the ten or the wide midfielders, we’ve got to get these guys in good positions and facing forward. It’s extremely important that we get back to doing that. I don’t think we’ve been short on chances recently. We’re deep when it comes to the offensive positions so I think we feel good about that but it’s about us going out there and dictating the game. First and foremost, it starts defensively.”

Finlay on Turning a Game Around After Starting Flat“Every individual has to take ownership of their own performance but we have a very talented group of players, individually but we’re the best when we play as a collective. First and foremost, we don’t win games as individuals. I think we’ve proven that when we have great individual performances but the team doesn’t quite come out great and doesn’t play as a group but we struggle. We don’t get results [when that happens]. When we play as a collective and as a group of guys that’s working in unison, offensively and defensively, I think we are a really difficult team [to beat] because of the talent that we have. That’s what I look forward to, just getting back to that mentality. It’s easier at home with a crowd that can get you going, whether it be individually or collectively as the group. I think you’ve got to be able to do that. We were able to do it at LAFC in an away environment so we know we can do it on the road. But you’ve got to bring it every day in this league. You can’t take a day off especially with where the table is right now. We put ourselves in a good position and now it’s about finishing the job. We have three points to get here at home and that’s been important for us all season and that doesn’t change.”

Mason Toye Named Week 26 Player of the WeekMinnesota United FC forward Mason Toye was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for Week 26 of the 2019 MLS season.

Toye scored two goals to help Minnesota to a 2-0 victory over the league-leading Los Angeles Football Club at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday. With the brace, Toye now has six goals this season, tied for second most on the team, along with three assists over 11 matches played. Minnesota sits in third place in the Western Conference with 45 points (13-9-6 overall record) and has a 5-0-1 record this regular season in matches where Toye scores a goal or registers an assist.

Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Toye finished from a challenging angle on the right side of the box with a left-footed strike to the upper left corner.

Days after receiving his first call to represent the United States Men’s U23 National Team, Toye showcased his tremendous skill once again, completing his brace to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute. Toye collected the ball outside the box and sent a stunning long-distance left-footed strike to the upper right corner, perfectly out of reach of the LAFC goalkeeper.

Mannone and Toye Named to MLS Week 26 Team of the WeekThe Loons catapulted up to third in the Western Conference with a road victory against LAFC on Sunday night. Mason Toye and Vito Mannone were crucial in the taking of all three points and earned spots in the MLS Team of the Week for Week 26.

Toye propelled the Loons to a first half lead with a pair of goals in the first thirty minutes to shock LAFC. His two left-footed strikes were his only shots of the game and he made them count, curling past the goalkeeper with expert precision. The 20-year-old now has six goals and three assists in just under 500 minutes played this MLS season. This is his second MLS team of the Week appearance.

Mannone makes his fourth feature on the Team of the Week, and reached double-digit shutouts this year with Sunday’s result. He kept the Loons in the game as they held off an onslaught of LAFC attacks, making an MLS career high of eight saves.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.

Gregus spent the next seven years of his career playing for Banik Ostrava where he made 100 appearances, scoring four goals. In 2016, Gregus joined one of the biggest clubs in Europe, FC Copenhagen and appeared in the 2016 UEFA Champions League. Gregus debuted with the Slovakia national team on March 31, 2015 against Czech Republic. He has since been capped 22 times for the Slovakia senior team, scoring two goals.

MINNESOTA UNITED FC COACHING STAFF BIOGRAPHIES

ADRIAN HEATH | HEAD COACH

Heath was appointed Head Coach of MNUFC in November 2016. After a playing career of over 18 years in Europe, he spent 11 years coaching in England for clubs like Burnley, Sheffield United and Coventry City before coming to the United States in 2008 to join USL expansion side Austin Aztex as Head Coach. The club spent two years in Austin before relocating to Orlando in 2010, to become Orlando City SC. In just four years under Heath, ORL won two USL Pro championships and three Commissioner’s Cups. The club joined MLS in 2015 and Heath’s influence helped build the team for a very successful inaugural season, narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

IAN FULLER | ASSISTANT COACH

Fuller joined MNUFC in 2016, following a successful stint with ORL. He was a player-coach with Orlando, helping the team to multiple titles in USL during his five years with the Lions. Fuller is a Portland native and first met Heath when he joined Austin Aztex in 2010. He was promoted to player-assistant coach for the club’s USL journey and was tapped to join the coaching staff full time as an assistant coach when Orlando joined MLS.

MARK WATSON | ASSISTANT COACH

Watson, a former Canada national team defender and assistant coach, brings a wealth of MLS experience to MNUFC, having played for SEA, VAN and DC. Additionally, Watson managed SJ before joining ORL as an assistant under Heath in 2014. During his tenure with the Quakes, Watson helped guide the team to a playoff berth in 2010 and its second Supporters’ Shield in 2012. Watson was named interim head coach in June 2013 and closed the season with the best record in MLS at 11-5-3. In addition to his MLS experience, Watson previously served as assistant coach with the Canada men’s national U20 and senior teams, as well as several years as an assistant with the USL PRO Charleston Battery.

JOHN PASCARELLA | ASSISTANT COACH

Pascarella arrives in Minnesota from Des Moines Menace of the Premier Development League (PDL), where he served as manager since January 2017. Prior to his time in the PDL, Pascarella spent eight seasons with SKC. Starting as a goalkeeper and fitness coach from 2009–2011, he then transitioned to become an assistant coach during an incredibly successful time in the franchise’s history; he helped guide SKC to a club-record six-straight playoff appearances, including the 2013 MLS Cup Final and the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles.
