MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Lookouts on the brink of clinching first-half title Chattanooga Times Free Press– 6/16/15

Only a colossal collapse would keep the Chattanooga Lookouts from winning the North Division first-half championship in the Southern League, and they're not showing any signs of faltering.

The Lookouts completed a 10-2 road trip Monday afternoon by polishing off the Birmingham Barons 4-1. Chattanooga improved to a season-best 15 games over .500 at 39-24 and can win the North with a single victory in its upcoming five-game series against Jacksonville at AT&T Field or a single loss by the second-place Tennessee Smokies against Mississippi.

"It's definitely exciting," Lookouts outfielder Adam Walker said on his way back to Chattanooga. "We had a 12-day road trip, and we knew that if we took care of business that we had a chance of closing this first half out. We still have one more series, and we just want to keep playing our game.

"We had a bit of a rough start this season, and it was the first time in Double-A for a lot of our guys. It took a little time to get going, but I think we have a very talented team."

Chattanooga would have clinched the North with a Tennessee loss Monday night, but the Smokies stayed alive by improving to 35-29 with a 5-1 win in Jacksonville.

Walker has played a prominent role in Chattanooga's first-half success, collecting two doubles and two singles in Monday's win. The 6-foot-4, 223-pounder from Milwaukee leads the league in home runs (17), RBIs (54) and total bases (134).

"There have been some ups and downs and some things I need to work on, but getting four hits in a day is always nice," he said.

Walker opened the second inning Monday with a single to left field and scored the game's first run on Stuart Turner's one-out single to center. The Lookouts extended their advantage to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Walker's one-out double to left scored Max Kepler.

Chattanooga maintained a 2-0 lead until the eighth inning, when Miguel Sano led off with a home run to left.

The Lookouts, who are off today before Wednesday night's 7:15 series opener against the Suns, have not won a first-half championship since going 44-26 in 2006, when they were managed by Jayhawk Owens and affiliated with the Cincinnati Reds. That is the only first-half title Chattanooga has won since moving to AT&T Field before the 2000 season.

Brett Lee (0-1, 6.35) is scheduled to start the series opener for the Lookouts.

Wednesday's game will be "Newspaper Night" at AT&T Field, as fans who bring a copy of Wednesday's Times Free Press will receive a free general admission ticket with a purchase of a ticket of equal value. The deal is good for Wednesday's contest only and will be based on availability.

Miracle capitalize on Tortugas errors, pick up 3-2 win Fort Myers Miracle– 6/15/15

FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 15, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle overcame an early two-run deficit to defeat the Daytona Tortugas, 3-2, on Monday evening at Hammond Stadium. Daytona got on the board in the first inning on a solo home run from Junior Arias. On a 3-2 pitch from Miracle starter Mat Batts, Arias sent a 382-foot drive onto the berm in left field, 1-0. In the second, the Tortugas added a second run. Alex Blandino led off with a double into the left field corner and advanced to third on a fly out to right from Robert Ramirez. Chad Wallach then cracked an 0-1 pitch into left center for a double and Blandino scored, 2-0. Engelb Vielma got the Miracle on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-out RBI. After Daytona reliever Nick Routt retired the first two hitters, Zack Granite laid down a bunt single in front of home plate. Then, Routt threw over to first on a pick-off attempt and Wallach lost the ball in the sun resulting in an error and Granite moving up to second. Vielma then pulled a soft liner on a 1-0 pitch to plate Granite and

cut the Tortugas lead to 2-1. The Miracle drew even in the bottom of the sixth. Daytona brought in reliever Nolan Becker and Chad Christensen greeted him with a single into left field. Granite then hit into a force play that retired Christensen at second base. Granite advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Vielma and then scored on Ryan Walker's bouncing single up the middle to knot the game at 2-2. Batts exited the game after six innings and received a no decision after giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. In the seventh, Daytona's defense committed a costly error that helped the Miracle take the lead. With one out, Tortugas reliever Joe Mantoni struck Bryan Haar with a 2-2 pitch. Jason Kanzler followed with a single into right field to put runners at first and second. Christensen then hit a ground ball to second baseman Carlton Daal who flipped to Blandino at shortstop for an out. Blandino then tried to complete the double play, but his throw bounced in the dirt and into the Daytona dugout. The throwing error allowed Haar to come home and give the Miracle a 3-2 advantage. After tossing a scoreless seventh, Miracle reliever D.J. Johnson started the top of the eight by walking Phillip Ervin. Stealing second, Ervin moved up to second. Johnson then struck out Arias for the first out and then was replaced by Alex Muren out of the bullpen. Muren wheeled around and threw a pick-off attempt to second to try and get Ervin, but the ball hit the runner and deflected into center field. With a runner at third and one out, Muren knuckled down to strikeout Sebastian Elizalde and Taylor Sparks to end the inning. Muren remained on the mound in the ninth and recorded his second save by fanning two more while stranding the tying runner at third for the second consecutive inning. The Miracle (32-32) snapped a two-game losing streak and continue the series at Hammond Stadium on Tuesday evening against the Tortugas (37-27). The game starts at 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. for a 2-for-1 Tuesday. Fans can take advantage of buy one, get one general admission tickets, domestic draft beers and hot dogs. Kernels’ Rodriguez trying to become a pitcher Cedar Rapids Gazette– 6/14/15

CEDAR RAPIDS – Believe it or not, he’s not a catcher. Never has been.

Dereck Rodriguez isn’t an outfielder anymore, either. He’s trying to be a pitcher, of all things.

The son of future hall of famer Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez made his second start for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Game 1 of a marathon double-header Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It wasn’t great, but better than his first Kernels appearance.

The 23-year-old is raw but has a good right arm. It’s just a matter of making that tough transition.

“It’s been great,” Rodriguez said. “I’ve always liked pitching, always liked throwing the ball, showing my arm. I can’t say it’s been rough, but it has been something different. It hasn’t been (easy) going from outfield to pitcher, but it’s fine.”

Rodriguez was a sixth-round draft pick in 2011 of the Minnesota Twins out of a Florida high school but hit just .216 in three seasons of Rookie ball. The Twins discussed a possible mound conversion with him after the 2013 season and he began his baseball transformation last season at Rookie-level Elizabethton.

He did well enough (five saves and a 1.05 earned run average) that Minnesota wants to see if he can make another transformation – bullpen to starter.

“Pitching was going to be kind of a last resort type of thing,” Kernels Manager Jake Mauer said. “He’s got good pitches, has got a good arm, good body. He’s got a chance.”

“The toughest adjustment has been trying to command my pitches,” Rodriguez said. “I’ve always been pretty good with the fastball, but I’m learning different pitches, learning where to throw them and learning when to throw them.”

Rodriguez said he simply never had the desire to be a catcher, which is why he never played the position like his dad. He said you’ve got to love the grind and squatting behind home plate for nine innings, and he didn’t.

He always has been his own player, someone trying to carve out his own baseball identity. Though it’s never a bad thing to have a 21-year major leaguer only a phone call away.

“He tells me that as long as I a uniform on, I’ll be fine,” Dereck said. “Just keep my head up and keep going forward.”

FIRST-HALF FINALE

The Midwest League’s first half is down to its final week, and the playoff picture is pretty clear. At least in the Western Division.

Quad Cities went into Saturday’s action having clinched one of two available postseason spots. The River Bandits were 40-20, 4.5 games ahead of second-place Cedar Rapids.

Barring a major collapse, the Kernels will get the first-half wildcard spot in the West, as they were five games up on Burlington.

In the Eastern Division, all kinds of teams are in playoff play. Lansing was a game ahead of Bowling Green for first place, 1.5 up on third-place Great Lakes. Lake County (3.5 out) also has legitimate chances, with Dayton (5 out) and West Michigan (6) a little more iffy.

With one more series of interleague play, the Eastern Division has a 44-27 lead on the Western Division. It doesn’t pick back up until August.
