MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Staying with Twins is the right move for Red Wings Kevin Oklobzija – Democrat & Chronicle – 8/19/16 You've done it before; we all have. You've driven along automobile alley in some city, gazed at the lot and thought: It's time for a new car. Or your trip to the mall took you through the appliance section of one of the department stores, and you've thought how nice it would be to have that fancy new fridge in your kitchen. And then you come to your senses. You realize there's really nothing wrong with your car, or your fridge. That's pretty much what the Rochester Red Wings have just done. Tempted perhaps to explore affiliation free agency and see who might be available, like the New York Mets, the Wings have decided life is good with the Minnesota Twins. They will not test the market. Instead, the Wings will announce a two-year extension of the affiliation on Friday afternoon, though they won't exactly be breaking the news. Twins president Dave St. Peter tweeted on Thursday afternoon that his club is "thrilled to continue player development partnership" with the Red Wings. The tweet was later deleted later Thursday evening; the deal was not deleted. Minor league teams have two choices when it comes to the length of a working agreement: two years or four years. The Wings have repeatedly signed two-year deals since the Twins became their parent team for the 2003 season. They like the idea that if things go horribly wrong, they're not locked in long term. In those 14 years since the Baltimore Orioles were told to leave town and the red carpet was rolled out for the Twins, the Wings have had nine winning seasons (including every year since 2013), one .500 year and just four losing seasons. Winning baseball is, for the most part, entertaining baseball. That's a very important element of an affiliation agreement. A championship would be even better. In that department the Twins have failed to deliver. The Wings haven't won the Governors' Cup since 1997. With the Twins stocking the roster, the Wings visited the playoffs just twice: an abbreviated stop in 2013 and a Game 5 loss in the Cup finals in 2006. In reality, that's not good enough. Fans are getting antsy. The outfield wall at Frontier Field needs an update in the championship section. Of course, if the Mets have been your Triple-A parent, you haven't won a championship since 1985. That's horrendous. Which brings us to the key component in staying with the Twins: they provide certainty. The Wings know what they'll get. From the front office and from the talent pipeline. The Twins farm system is strong, and the scouting department has always found good players. This year, heading into Thursday, the Twins' minor league system ranked 10th in winning percentage. The Mets ranked 23rd. Last year, the Mets were fifth and the Twins were seventh. This summer, the Mets have have one team between Class A and Triple A with a winning record: Their high-A Florida State League team. Just as importantly, the farm system is the lifeblood for the Twins. They can't retool their major-league lineup through free agency. They must build from within.

Heading into 2016, Baseball America rated the Twins' farm system No. 8 in all of baseball. The Mets were 21st. And more often than not, the Twins will be sellers near the MLB trade deadline, not buyers. Sending a veteran to a contender nets quality prospects, and the farm system grows even stronger. The Mets, if in contention, will always be pressured by their market to trade for the moment. It's New York. Win now. Like last year. They traded five minor-league pitchers in their push to reach the World Series. There surely is some apprehension within the Wings' front office now that Terry Ryan is gone. The longtime general manager was fired in July. He was the biggest ally of the partnership. But considering how strong this affiliation has been from the perspective of a business relationship, the Wings owe the Twins the benefit of the doubt. Twins ownership hasn't changed. St. Peter is still the club president. There will still be a bond with Naomi Silver and Dan Mason. There's a reason the Mets are in Las Vegas right now, too: No one in the International League wanted them as their parent team. They earned their reputation and got what they deserved: a home in the desert where it's very, very difficult to develop players. Which is why, if things don't continue to go well with the Twins over the next two years, the Mets will still be available. Wings defeat Bisons Reynaldo Rodriguez belted a three-run home run in the third inning, erasing a 3-1 deficit, and the Rochester Red Wings defeated the Buffalo Bisons 6-3 on Thursday night at Frontier Field. Jason Wheeler allowed three runs in the first two innings but finished strong, pitching three hitless innings before leaving after the sixth. He struck out six, didn't walk a batter and improved to 10-4. Alex Wimmers pitched a one-walk ninth for his 10th save. Newcomer Mitch Garver, promoted from Double-A Chattanooga last week, continued to hit well. He went 2-for-4 and is 8-for-24 in seven games. Game night The matchup: Red Wings vs. Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays). Time/place: 7:05 p.m. Friday/Frontier Field. Gates open at 6 p.m. Tickets: $9, $11.50, $13. Broadcasts: Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (26), WHTK-AM (1280). Relive the Miracle: Four members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team will be on hand to sign autographs, take part in first-pitch ceremonies and do a post-game interview. Who: Neal Broten, Dave Christian, Mike Eruzione and Mike Ramsey. They'll sign autographs from 6 to 6:45 p.m. and 7:15 to 8 p.m. First "pitch" twist: The players will "shoot" first pitches with hockey sticks. Lookouts fall 6-2 to Montgomery Times Free Press – 8/19/16

The Chattanooga Lookouts' game Thursday night started late because of bad weather, and the outlook never got favorable for the home team. Montgomery scored a run in the top of the first inning and led the rest of the way in a 6-2 Southern League victory at AT&T Field for the Biscuits, who are 29-23 in the second half and second to the Jackson Generals in the North Division. Chattanooga is in third place at 27-25. Each team had just five hits Thursday, but Biscuits leadoff batter Kean Wong walked twice in addition to his double and batted in three runs. Lookouts counterpart Zach Granite had both RBIs for his team. Wong led off the game with a walk off Aaron Siegers (9-7) but was forced at second on a grounder by Cade Gotta, who stole second and third bases and scored on a sacrifice fly by Willy Adames. Gotta reached base on an error in the third and moved around when Adames was hit by a pitch and Jake Bauers lined an RBI single. The Lookouts cut the 2-0 margin in half in the bottom of the third, when Tanner Witt singled, Engelb Vielma walked and Granite hit a sacrifice fly. The Biscuits made it 4-1 in the fourth as Justin Williams walked, Armando Araiza was hit by a pitch and Wong doubled them home after a sacrifice bunt. The teams play again tonight at 7:15 with fireworks scheduled afterward.
