MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Wow! Arcia homer gives Wings walk-off win Rochester Red Wings– 7/6/15

Oswaldo Arcia's first hit of the night - a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth - gave the Rochester Red Wings a 10-8 win over the Lehigh Valley Monday night at Frontier Field. First place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost Monday, so the win moves the Wings into a first place tie with the RailRiders. The Buffalo Bisons come to town Tuesday night to open a three-game Thruway Cup series at 7:05 p.m.; it's also another Fan 4-Pack Night with four tickets, hot dogs, drinks and a yearbook for $36 ($40 day of game).Complete promotion details below...

Hot-hitting Chase d'Arnaud (three hits Sunday) singled to open the game against Wings left-handerPat Dean, then stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. But three fly ball outs - including one on a long running catch in dead center field by Eric Farris - kept the IronPigs off the scoreboard.

Dean did get some first inning runs from his teammates. With two outs in the bottom of the first,Argenis Diaz drew a walk from starter Anthony Vasquez, and Reynaldo Rodriguez followed with a single. That's when Jose Martinez drilled a 2-1 pitch off the top of the wall in left field, missing a homer by a couple feet. Martinez did get a two-run double, however, for an early 2-0 Red Wings lead.

The IronPigs made another bid to score in the second inning, after Cord Phelps led off with a double. But Dean set down the next three batters to maintain the two-run lead.

Dean dealt with more offensive pressure in the top of the third inning. After retiring the lead off hitter by a swinging strikeout, d'Arnaud and Tyler Henson hit back-to-back singles. Aaron Altherr followed with a three-run home run that gave the IronPigs a 3-2 lead. The Wings' lefty worked himself out of the inning with two more swinging strikeouts.

In the top of the fifth, Dean forced a quick fly out from the lead off hitter, but then gave up a triple to d'Arnaud and a sacrifice fly by Henson that gave the IronPigs a run to add to their lead, 4-2.

The Wings' bats battled back in the bottom of the fifth with base hits by Jorge Polanco and James Beresford, and another walk by Diaz. With the bases loaded, Rodriguez collected his 42nd RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly that closed the gap to 4-3.

Lehigh Valley starter Vasquez was done for the night after five innings, allowed six hits, three earned runs and struck out two.

After a one-out single by Doug Bernier in the bottom of the sixth, Farris smacked a two-base hit down the left field line and pushed across the tying run and made the score 4-4. The Wings' offensive inning continued as Carlos Paulino reached first on a walk. Polanco pushed Farris across the plate with a single and his first RBI as a Red Wing, moved Paulino to third, Farris to second and gave the Wings a 5-4 lead. Beresford added to the lead with a ground ball to first base that allowed Farris to slide home and extend the Wings' lead to 6-4.

Dean worked seven innings and allowed six hits and four earned runs, striking out six. Dean threw 86 pitches, 61 for strikes. Dean has pitched at least five innings in all of his starts, except for the June 5 game that was suspended after two innings. Michael Tonkin pitched the eighth inning for Rochester, striking out one in a perfect relief inning.

A.J. Achter worked the ninth inning for the Wings, and the IronPigs quickly mounted a threat against the Wings' All-Star closer. A bloop single, followed by a single and fielding error put runners at second and third with none out. Chris McGuiness drilled a game-tying double into the right field corner off Achter, who was 13-for-13 in save opportunities since taking over as closer. A fly out, followed by a check-swing infield hit, had runners at the corners with only one out. Edgar Duran's safety squeeze brought McGuiness in for a 7-6 IronPigs lead. d'Arnaud's fourth hit of the game - a bloop shot into right-center - brought in an insurance run and made it 8-6.

With relief ace Adam Loewen pitching for the IronPigs in the bottom of the ninth, the Wings made a rally attempt. Diaz reached on an infield hit and advanced to second base on a throwing error to start the frame. Rodriguez followed by drilling a single up the middle, bring Diaz around to score and pulling the Wings to within a run at 8-7. Martinez battled Loewen (1-3) to a full count before hitting a single, his third hit of the night. That put the tying and winning runs on base for Arcia with none out. Arcia fell into an 0-2 hole after two mighty swings; but his third swing left no doubt, launching a line drive home run into the Wings bullpen for a game-winning, three-run homer. It extended his hitting streak to eight game in style, and was the fourth homer in the streak.

The Wings out-hit Lehigh Valley 14-11. Polanco and Martinez each had three hits, and Rodriguez had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Achter picked up the save deispite the blown save, improving his record to 4-2.

On July 1, the Minnesota Twins, in need of a power bat, bypassed the Rochester Red Wings and dipped down to Double-A Chattanooga to promote mega prospect Miguel Sano.

That same afternoon, Oswaldo Arcia belted a mammoth home run, some 446 feet, to straight-away center at Frontier Field.

He homered again Thursday at Lehigh Valley. And Saturday he launched a ball that, considering the height and distance (457 feet) should have been given a flight number.

Then Monday night, after Red Wings closer A.J. Achter, Mr. Automatic himself, proved to be mortal, Arcia came to the rescue and blasted a three-run walk-off home run to provide a 10-8 victory over the IronPigs.

Again, maybe it's just a coincidence. Or, maybe Sano's first big-league callup provided a little wake-up call for left-handed hitting Arcia.

"I'm very happy he's there," Arcia said, "but it was a lot of motivation. I want to try to be there with him."

He's certainly getting closer. Instead of being a dead pull hitter, and thus being forced to chase breaking balls that are falling off the plate, Arcia has had a much better all-around approach.

He's taking pitches the other way. He's working on a more compact swing. "I'm trying to get as short as I can to the ball," he said of his swing.

While he was just 1-for-5 on Monday night, he is 14-for-34 (.412) over the past eight games with two doubles, four homers, 10 RBI and eight runs.

"I feel really good," he said. "I'm trying to use the whole field. It's hard to try to only pull the ball."

Sometimes, though, pulling the ball is OK. Like the 0-2 pitch from Adam Loewen in the bottom of the ninth that he deposited into the right field bullpen. Oddly, his first two swings were for the fence but his thought on the 0-2 pitch was, he said, all about producing a quality at-bat.

"On the first two swings I try to take a shot and hit the ball out," he said. "The last one, I tried to hit to the right side of the field and move the runners over."

Funny how that works. That's exactly what Wings manager Mike Quade and hitting coach Tim Doherty have been explaining.

"It doesn't take that much for a guy with his power to hit it out," Quade said.

The homer took Achter off the hook. Since becoming the closer in early May, he was 13-for-13 in save situations, but the IronPigs scored four runs in the top of the ninth to turn a 6-4 Wings' lead into an 8-6 deficit.

Loewen, who had been as dominant as Achter, also proved to be quite human. The Wings collected four consecutive hits: Argenis Diaz led off with a single, Reynaldo Rodriguez singled him home, Jose Martinez singled and Arcia then homered.

"It's nice to see us pick 'Acht' up," Quade said, "because he's done it a bunch of times for us."

The Chattanooga Lookouts owned a 3-0 lead at Jacksonville when play was suspended due to rain in the top of the fifth inning of their Southern League baseball game Monday night.

Aderlin Mejia, hitting in the ninth spot in the Lookouts' lineup, hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the inning just before officials postponed the rest of the game. Chattanooga third baseman Stephen Wickens scored in the first inning on a groundout after he reached on a one-out double. Cleanup hitter Max Kepler scored in the top of the fourth on a double by Adam Walker.

The resumption of Monday's game is slated for today at 5:35 p.m. Game four of the series is scheduled to follow.

David Hurlbut (3-4, 6.37 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Lookouts in the full game, with Matt Tomshaw (3-5, 2.78) scheduled for the Suns.

Gonsalves sharp, Knecht homers in 9-0 blowout of Mets Fort Myers Miracle– 7/6/15

FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 6, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle completed a three-game sweep of the St. Lucie Mets with a 9-0 drubbing and seven scoreless innings from Stephen Gonsalves at Hammond Stadium on Monday evening. In his best start since joining the Miracle, Gonsalves (3-0) faced just five over the minimum with just three hits surrendered and two walks while notching seven strikeouts. The lineup supplied offense early in the game for Gonsalves. In the first, Zack Granite led off with a double against Mets starter Miller Diaz. A wild pitch moved Granite to third. Then, Engelb Vielma hit a sharp grounder that deflected off of Diaz's lower body. Third baseman Jairo Perez grabbed the ball and threw to home plate in an attempt to get Granite. Perez's toss beat Granite to the plate, but the runner was ruled safe when home plate umpire Ryan Benson ruled that catcher Lednier Ricardo blocked the dish, 1-0. Vielma was in the mix again in the third. With one out, Vielma singled into center off Diaz (5-7). While at the first base bag, Diaz attempted a pick-off throw that first baseman Dominic Smith lost in the sun for an error and Vielma moved up to second. Alex Swim then pulled a ground ball out to the right side and Vielma advanced to third. Mitch Garver stepped to the plate and watched a wild pitch from Diaz bounce to the netting behind home plate and Vielma scored, 2-0. After scraping across two runs, Marcus Knecht brought the fans to their feet with a majestic three-run homer in the fifth. Swim started a scoring frame with a two-out lined single that deflected off Phil Evan's glove at second base. Garver reachd on an infield hit that bounced off Diaz on the mound. With two on, Knecht launched a 1-1 pitch 413 feet and high onto the Sun Harvest Citrus lawn, 5-0.

A solid lead became a blowout in the eighth when the Miracle churned out four runs on four hits. Michael Quesada knocked in a run while reaching on an error. Vielma and Garver picked up RBI singles and Swim drove in a run with a bases loaded walk against Mets reliever David Roseboom. Vielma finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Knecht was 2-for-5 with three RBI, a double and two runs. Matt Summers tossed a perfect eighth and ninth innings to complete the shutout. Gonsalves and Summers limited the Mets to just three hits. The shutout was Fort Myers' seventh of the season and the Miracle have now won 11 consecutive home games at Hammond Stadium. The Miracle (46-36, 8-4) are one game off the pace in the Florida State League South Divison and travel to Jupiter, Fla. to battle the Hammerheads in the first of a three-game series on Tuesday evening. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. and the MiracleBaseball.com pregame show begins at 6:10 p.m. with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman.

Muscles and mustaches: Miracle’s Kanzler aims for majors Fort Myers News-Press– 7/3/15

The metamorphosis of mustache maven Jason Kanzler began after being cut from his first college baseball team.

Kanzler, who waxed and twirled the ends of his mustache upon first arriving to the Fort Myers Miracle late last July, began carving the chip on his muscled shoulders upon getting dismissed by the Northeastern University baseball program in 2008.

Kanzler, now 25 but then fresh out of Penfield High near Rochester, N.Y., stood 6-feet and weighed 170 pounds and was of no interest to college recruiters. Seven years and more than 30 pounds of muscle later, Kanzler has transformed himself into one of the most interesting characters and unheralded outfielders in the minor leagues.

"Sometimes I want to email the coach there and say, 'See what you missed out on,'" Kanzler said. "But I never have. I don't need to rub it into his face. And it was probably the right decision at the time. I probably wasn't good enough. I might not have been good enough then, but I'm good enough now."

Former Northeastern coach Neil McPhee retired after 29 years with the program following the 2007 season. His replacement, Mike Glavine, was in his first season as coach in 2008. Glavine said he couldn't even remember Kanzler, who was with the Huskies as a preferred walk-on.

"That was probably the first of my many mistakes," said Glavine, the brother of former Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine.

Kanzler, in his second year with the Fort Myers Miracle, has continued to overcome adversity and has done so in relative obscurity. Unlike his Miracle predecessor, Byron Buxton, who ranked No. 1 on Baseball America's prospect list, Kanzler does not even rank in the top 25 of his own team's top prospects. Yet ask anyone who scouted or coached Kanzler, and they all marvel at his prowess, especially when he's roaming center field.

Jake Mauer, who managed Kanzler on the Low-A Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Kernels last season, has coached a number of standout center fielders, including Buxton.

Kanzler stood out. His 27 stolen bases last year were the third-most among Twins minor leaguers.

"He's an intense guy," Mauer said. "There's no doubt about it. Defensively, he's one of the better ones we've had here. It was just a matter of him learning himself as a hitter and staying within himself."

Getting noticed

After getting cut at Northeastern, Kanzler played in an American Legion summer league in 2009. One of his coaches became an assistant at the University of Buffalo.

"I took up lifting, and I kind of made it an obsession, knowing that my size was holding me back," Kanzler said. "I was crushing the ball. I hit 10 home runs in like 15 games. It was really weird. Everything got so much easier after I got stronger. He said, 'Why don't you come play for Buffalo?'"

At Buffalo, Kanzler became best friends and roommates with catcher Tom Murphy, now a prospect with the Colorado Rockies. Murphy and Kanzler became favorites of Buffalo coach Ron Torgalski.

"The kid was determined to prove people wrong," Torgalski said of Kanzler. "He got hooked up with the right guy when he was here. I've never seen two guys work their asses off more than the two of them. They made the commitment to the weight room. They made the commitment to the conditioning. They made the commitment to being the first ones to practice and the last ones to leave."

The Minnesota Twins selected Kanzler in the 20th round of the 2013 draft.

"My approach to working out, everything has a purpose," Kanzler said. "I try to always maintain my mobility and my flexibility while also being athletic, strong and powerful as opposed to just being musclebound.

"I train less like a baseball player and more like a football skill player, because that suits my position more."

Despite Kanzler's low draft status, Torgalski predicted a big-league future.

"I tell people around here, he's going to make it one day to the big leagues, just based on his determination and his work ethic," Torgalski said. "You won't find a guy as determined as Jason. He plays the game with a chip on his shoulder. 'Nobody recruited me. OK, I'll show 'em. Nobody drafted me, OK, I'll show 'em.' He put up numbers when he was here. But defensively, I've never seen a better player."

When Murphy was being scouted, Rockies scouts sometimes asked him about Kanzler.

"There's no doubt in my mind he's under-evaluated," Murphy said. "To this day, he's still the best center fielder I've seen play out of everybody I've been around."

As for why Kanzler continually went unnoticed, Murphy had no clue.

"I really, couldn't even tell you, because it's so obvious," Murphy said. "He has a never-give-up attitude, and it's contagious. He's going to give you everything he's got. It's not like he's the best player in the world, but he just works so extremely hard."

Gunning for championships

Kanzler hit .286 (90-for-315) with nine homers, 48 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 84 games for Cedar Rapids last season. But his final 27 games with the Fort Myers Miracle helped them win their first Florida State League championship.

Two of Kanzler's postseason home runs powered the Miracle into the record books.

In the Miracle's first playoff game, Kanzler hit a game-tying grand slam.

In the Florida State League championship series against the Daytona Cubs, Kanzler hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning for a 4-2 lead, the series-clinching game's final score.

"He was a big part of what they did at the end of the year into the fall," Twins director of minor leagues Brad Steil said. "Jason is a competitive guy. He's a hard-nosed player. He brings a lot of energy to the lineup every day."

Kanzler was slowed a little this season after his right hand was spiked and sliced during a head-first slide into second base on May 22, forcing him to the disabled list for 18 games.

"It kind of derailed me a little bit," said Kanzler, who in 54 games through play Wednesday has hit .235 (43-for-183) with five homers, 17 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 18 attempts.

"I was swinging a pretty good bat," Kanzler said. "I kind of found a groove. My first game back, I was atrocious, but ever since then it's been good. The only thing is I'm still a little freaked out trying to slide into second base. The two times I've tried to steal, I've been thrown out because I hesitated on my slide. Instead of sliding head first like I normally do, I've awkwardly tried to slide feet first. Aside from that, everything has been going good."

The six-pound burger

Kanzler works hard at entertaining his teammates off the field.

While on a college road trip in North Carolina, he attempted to eat a six-pound burger in less than 60 minutes. Each player received $20 in meal money, and he knew he would get all of his money back if he ate the entire burger in time.

"It was a two-pound burger patty, one-pound bun, one pound of fries, one pound of cole slaw and one other pound of something else," Kanzler said. "Then there were two pitchers of sweet tea, and I had to put it all down in an hour.

"Maybe halfway through, I started sweating and losing steam a lot, and I wasn't even halfway done. The D.J. started playing 'Eye of the Tiger,' and the whole restaurant and bar started really getting behind me and started cheering for me.

"I felt really terrible all night. I probably threw up a few times."

Torgalski said the incident just exemplified why it's good to have Kanzler on your team.

"Who says I can't do it? OK, I'll do it," Torgalzki said of Kanzler's attitude, whether it be toward an eating contest or facing an elite pitcher. "He didn't get it done. But it was pretty darned close. The whole place was watching him, too. He got a standing ovation."

The 'stache

If actor Tom Selleck from his "Magnum, P.I." days had been into weight lifting, he and Kanzler could pass for at least close cousins, if not brothers.

Kanzler and most of his Buffalo teammates, including Murphy, grew mustaches during a spring break trip in 2013.

More than two years later, all of the players but Kanzler have shaved them off.

"We had some pretty nasty mustaches," Murphy said. "We were all kind of goofballs. I gave that up a long time ago."

Kanzler, however, hasn't.

In Cedar Rapids, fans began calling Kanzler "The 'Stache."

Should Kanzler continue advancing, "The 'Stache" is sure to stick.

"I think I can pull off a mustache," Kanzler said. "At least more than other people. I think once you get over that hump of how awkward it can look, you know, I can twirl the ends and put wax on it, and it looks awesome. It's kind of sweet.

"Some people grow gardens. I grow mustaches."
