Hi All,

Well I’m having a hard time believing we’re almost done with winter, YEAH! It was wonderful to see so many people at convention in January. I had so many great conversations.

I would like to welcome our two newest Senators Chad Groetsch and Lisa Ahlquist. What a great night! You are both great new assets to the Senate, and will do wonderful things.

I would like to give a Big Huge Thank you to Greg Green for having been such a fantastic Hospitality VP! Whoever takes on filling your apron will need some long stings to get it tied!

State Bowling is coming up, April 29 & 30th. Saturday is singles and couples, Sunday is teams. It’s hosted by the St. Paul Jaycee’s at Sun Ray Lanes. Anyone want to form a team or two? I’m willing to bowl, just warning I’m lucky when I break 100! But I do have my own bowling ball and shoes.

Well here’s to a warm sunny spring! Yours in Jaycees, Susan Adams-Eriksen #65312 1st Vice President MN JCI Senate 2016-2017 [email protected] 715-357-0077

1st Vice President - Susan Adams-Eriksen

Hey there, fellow Senators! I wanted to start this article with thanking all my senate family for the kind words and condolences to myself and my family during my dad’s battle with cancer and of his passing away on January 9th. It has been difficult, and I thank Toon and the rest of the Senate board for your support. Congratulations to our new Senators. Please remember to get in your applications to Toon for upcoming conventions. Just a reminder to turn in your Return the Favor hours to Denise Olsen.

There are several upcoming events being hosted by local Jaycee Chapters, let’s show our support and go visit these chapters. Also a great opportunity to recruit potential new members for this great organization. See you in Alexandria. Michele Lagred #66199 2nd Vice President MN JCI Senate 2016-2017 [email protected]

We say the Jaycee Creed at all our Jaycee meetings but the message today is very simple.

"We Believe" We as Jaycees believe in many things of great value to ourselves, our community and our nation. To believe is really something great, but to fulfill our beliefs is what counts. Faith in God means love, sincerity, honesty, and above all service to the people of God. It is said that, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Our message in our creed is very clear - "Give."

♦ Give your love and service to your fellow man.

♦ Give your friendship to people all over the world for a better understanding.

♦ Give your talents to you country for the benefit of all.

♦ Give your support to your government to achieve the highest in social and economic development.

♦ Give your enthusiasm and support to all people of good will for a better society and a better world. I pray that I may do my share in making a better world. I pray that I may be part of the cure for the ills of the world. Amen Jerry Will #24873 Chaplain MN JCI Senate 2016-2017 [email protected]

Hospitality Chair - Greg Green

Dear Friends: As most of you already know I am leaving the position of Hospitality Chairman for the Minnesota JCI Senate. Please consider this to be my sincere goodbye to each and every one of you. I want you all to know that I am truly leaving here with mixed feelings; HAPPY about not having to plan the meals, shop for the food and drinks, organize the bins with the necessary supplies, condense the supplies and food into bins and coolers, play horizontal Tetris to pack the trailer, & haul the Senate trailer to convention ONLY to unload everything onto carts, luggage racks, and two wheelers headed to the Hospitality Room. Then arrange the room furniture, unpack the bins, set up the bar, coordinate the cooler contents, layout the tables with necessary serving utensils, bowls, crock pots, roasters, plates, cutlery, & napkins for dinner….and that’s just Friday, so I’ll stop there. But I’m also SAD to be letting go of such a great opportunity where there are so many wonderful friends and colleagues that are more than willing to help.

Co-Chairing the food and snacks for the USJCI Senate national convention in Rochester and the USJCI Region VI fall meeting in Brainerd was a tremendous challenge for me personally, yet I cannot express what each of these afforded me to learn and grow in the process. Thank you all so much for making my time a truly enjoyable one. The last five years as your Hospitality Chair was one of the best periods of my Senate career. I learned a great deal, worked with many fantastic people, and hope that what I did had an impact on a newer Jaycee or two. My very best wishes for the future go out to each and every one of you. I’m not riding off into the sunset, but I do have a few ideas to fill my soon-to-be free time. Yours sincerely, Greg Green #65761 Hospitality MN JCI Senate 2016-2017 [email protected]

Chairman of the Board - Ketti Green

Hello one and all, At Annual convention this past January I had the opportunity to talk to many Jaycees of which one was the Program Manager for the Junior Jaycees and she has the opportunity to put together programming during convention for the Junior Jaycees. As we talked I got to thinking that we have some awesome Senators that could put together some fun trainings for the kids ages 10 - 17. Sheena also said that her program needs to be self funded, that got me to thinking maybe we could help her out financially as well. Also during this convention there was talk at the Board of Directors about possibly not having the Junior Jaycees held at conventions, that conversation was tabled until next convention. I did ask Sheena if she would like me to approach the Senators to see if there was any interest in helping out with some trainings and she said that would be great. I did NOT mention anything about money except that she should put together a budget and present to the Statesman, Ambassadors and Senators to see if she could get some financial assistance. So.... If any of you wonderful Senators would like to drag out and dust off some trainings that would benefit these kids please let me know via email what you would like to do. You can do more than one training. I would love to compile a great list of trainings for her. Hello Senators, As I write this I am thinking about the wonderful organization we all joined and belong to and how it has changed so much! Good, bad or indifferent however you see it, it is still something we belong to in one way or another. As Senators we are here to guide, watch, mentor and help support our members, chapters and state whenever we can or are asked. You may be sitting there wondering where in the world I am going with this. So, bear with me! One of my favorite things that I like to do as a member is turn in applications to honor and recognize the leaders we are growing year after year with their Statesman, Ambassador and Senatorships. The smile it brings to my face watching the surprise come over someone's face is worth a million. At the same time, I look back at how I wish this person or that person could have turned in a letter for this member. It would have meant so much to them. Remember someone had to write a letter for you. Please keep that in mind when you are asked! Return the favor.... If you don't feel you can write one for someone than say so; don't leave it without an answer. At the same time of you say yes, please follow through. In my opinion it is our duty to write letters for these honors since we have one, two or all three.

Letters can be a paragraph to a page long. I have also seen form letters and letters that are all facts and both else. Personally, I love to include a personal memory I have with the member to show how they touch people's lives and that you do mean something to me. Please let's get these applications turned in and show the State, Country and world that JCI Minnesota has the best of the best. Let's lead by example, let's honor our members! If you need help please let me know, I am always here to help you. Dana Listerud #69422 South Area Coordinator MN JCI Senate 2016-2017 [email protected] Editor’s Note: I would like to thank Dana, Cheryl and Lorri for their good humor while I prepared “their newsletter articles” of the past. I was a bit sad to have received everyone’s articles this month, leaving me nowhere to be creative. So what did I do? Well...I ran late! So now I ask all of you to forgive the tardiness of this edition (and after everyone else was on time!) Thank you for understanding, and again, thank you for your good sportsmanship!

Hey, you! Senator!

You may have noticed a severe lack of photos in this issue, yes? Well, I’m going to let you in on a little secret here...It’s because your friendly newsletter editor didn’t get any from you!

That’s right! The pictures of the two new Senators and the kids at Convention? It’s a good thing they posted them on Facebook! Everything else has been just stock/borrowed photos. (Well, OK, Greg included one in his article to emphasize his content.)

Now, here’s what I want you to do: SEND PICTURES of Senators doing things! Don’t wait for someone else or simply expect that someone else will. You...Do It! I only have one more edition to put out this year for Toon, and I want it to be a good one.

Thanks! This has been a public service announcement from your friendly Scope editor.

24th Hal Krekorian Memorial Golf Tournament

Hello MN JCI Senators, In addition to serving as Membership Information Services Program Manager, I have the honor of serving as Chairman of the 24th Hal Krekorian Memorial Golf Tournament. This activity is conducted annually in conjunction with the US JCI Senate National Convention. The proceeds from this event are given to the USJCI Senate Foundation. The financial success of the outing relies heavily on sponsorships. Past sponsors have included individuals, state organizations, regions, past senate groups and current senate groups. There are several opportunities for sponsorship. These include: major sponsor, contest sponsor, tee sponsor, golf cart sponsor, just to name a few. Donations of $50 or more may be applied to your U.S. JCI Senate Foundation account and accumulate to your next level of giving. Donations may also be credited to Memorial Scholarships of your choice. Attached is a Sponsorship Registration Form that outlines the value for each level of sponsorship. You may consider more than one level of sponsorship. It is requested that you include this form in your next newsletter or E-News distributed within your state or region. I have also provided an entry form should you or any member of your organization want to participate in the tournament as an individual or as a team. Many states enter a team. I encourage you to strongly consider serving as a sponsor this year at any level you decide to choose. Your support is appreciated. Should you have any questions….please feel to contact me via email or phone. Gary Pittenger #24804 Chairman (The referenced forms can be found at the end of the newsletter. –Editor)
