About JCIWe are a membership-based nonprofit organization of 200,000 young people ages 18 to 40 in 5,000 communities and more than 100 countries around the world.

Each JCI Member shares the belief that in order to create lasting positive change, we must improve ourselves and the world around us.

We seek targeted solutions to the unique problems in our communities to build a better world, creating global impact.

The JCI MissionTo provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.

The JCI VisionTo be the leading global network of young active citizens.

The JCI ValuesThat faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men,That earth's great treasure lies in human personality,And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

Making a World of DifferenceThere is a limit to what governments are able to achieve in society. As responsible citizens in a globalized world, JCI mem-bers take on the challenges around them through local development initiatives. These tailored projects require members to use strategic planning and critical planning to craft creative solutions to the problems of their communities.

Be BetterJCI members seek ways to live out our slogan, Be Better. We think critically about society’s greatest challenges and act on behalf of our communities to be part of the solution. We seek better solutions to build better communities, creating a better future.

The Original Active CitizensAs global citizens, we all have rights and responsibilities, as well as shared goals. Through active citizenship, we enact our sense of social responsibility to work towards these goals and benefit communities worldwide.

Our Founder, Henry Giessenbier, was the original active citizen. He took steps to engage young people in civic involve-ment in 1914, and JCI members worldwide have followed his lead ever since.

A Grassroots Movement with International ScopeIn JCI, the action is local, but our principles and impact are global. Members understand that in a globalized world, their local actions echo across the globe. 5,000 JCI Local Organizations addressing problems in their communities are united in a global movement creating global impact.

One Year to LeadWith this principle at its core, the JCI structure offers leadership opportunities to new members each year. One year to shine. One year of impact. One year to lead.

03JCI Partnerships

JCI PartnershipsAs an international non-governmental organization (NGO) with active participation in the UN system, JCI’s international partners include big names in global development, capacity building and international cooperation. Our partnerships are based in mutual goals and a synergy with the JCI Mission and Values, creating the maximum impact to support the local work our members do every day.

Partner: United NationsFocus: UN Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs)JCI has officially partnered with the UN since 1954. Through the years, these relationships have expanded to include various branches in the UN system as the two organizations collaborate to magnify their collective impact.

In 2003, JCI committed to advancing the UN Millennium Development Goals, a set of time-bound targets for poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women. JCI members organize thousands of projects every year committed to advancing the goals and using the UN MDGs as a framework.

At JCI’s many Leadership Summits, held in collaboration with the UN, delegates join with representatives from key partners to focus on a current issue and seek workable solutions for members to enact locally. Read more about the 2009 JCI Leadership Summit.

Partner: UN Global CompactFocus: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)The UN Global Compact works to advance Ten Principles of CSR in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption. JCI partners with the UN Global Compact to educate small- and medium-sized enterprises on how to be responsible and profitable in a competitive global market.

Partner: International Chamber of Commerce-World Chambers Federation (ICC-WCF)Focus: Global Economic ProgressThe ICC is the voice of world business championing the global economy as a force for economic growth. Through our partnership with the ICC-WCF, JCI Local Organizations collaborate with local chambers of commerce to collaborate on projects to advance global economic progress and encourage entrepreneurship.

Partner: UN FoundationFocus: Combating Malaria with JCI Nothing But NetsMalaria is the leading killer of children in Africa, but this deadly disease can be prevented with the use of insecticide-treated bed nets. Through JCI Nothing But Nets, a campaign in partnership with the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets initiative, JCI members raise funds for the purchase and distribution of insecticide-treated nets and educate communities on their proper use.

Partner: UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)Focus: Youth Capacity BuildingSince 1996, JCI has contributed to achieving UNESCO's goal of promoting cooperation among its 193 Member States and 6 Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. JCI Local and National Organizations collaborate with UNESCO in many ways, including participating in the NGO International Conference and theme-specific collective and regional consul-tations.

Partner: Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)Focus: Child HealthJCI has worked with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) since 1994 to implement cooperation agreements focusing on children in JCI’s Latin American National Organizations. Enjoying international recognition as part of the United Nations system, PAHO serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization. PAHO supports JCI National Organizations in Latin America to implement projects related to MDG 4: reduce child mortality.

JCI also maintains relationships with the Conference on Nongovernmental Organizations (CONGO), AIESEC, NGO Committee on UNICEF and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Junior Chamber International Malaysia

Greeting from Swan City, Sibu!

There were two persons who had greatly motivated me as I prepared for my presidential year. First, it is the aspiration of our founder Henry Giessenbier who in forming our JCI movement had called on us to establish a permanent and everlasting world peace within the soul of our organization.

Then, our 2011 World President Kentaro Harada who had set JCI Presidential Theme as “Go Impact the World!” has motivated us to come together to change the world with The Impact of One. This should be our shared vision for a powerful global change.

For decades, our organization has helped the community to grow through our Four Areas of Opportunities: Individual, Community, International and Business. Today these four areas of opportunities is still our direc-tion but in the dawn of a new era, we must see beyond this to create global challenges.

There are many things we can do, but in the world today that is much troubled by climate change. We as responsible citizens and leaders should work together to create that ONE IMPACT for our future genera-tions by mitigating global warming.

Global warming has brought about unusual climate patterns. Crops have failed, the intensity of typhoons has increased and worst our environment has changed to affect human life in all ways. We have to act fast now before we regret it. We need to inject this into our activities and leadership. We must practice and promote the 3R Concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to our members and communities.

This year, JCI Malaysia’s Presidential Theme is “Let’s go green!” It is our goal to set JCI Malaysia as the leading youth organization that promote, practice and be the green ambassador in Malaysia.

The Plan of Action for JCI Malaysia will also work in line with the Presidential Theme. The word of “GREEN” stands for Growth, Resources Development, Efficiency, Elementary and Networking.

For Growth, JCI Malaysia had set a target to increase our membership growth to 3,000 and extend at least 3 new Local Chapters by year 2011. Besides, JCI Malaysia will also extend our JCI movements to Perlis, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. Together we are working towards our green mission.

Message from the National President 201104

Page 7: JCI Pemimpin

For Resources Development, JCI Malaysia is working towards to build a sustainable financial base and resources development.

For Efficiency, JCI Malaysia will further strengthen and standardize our Quality Management System. The Organization is working to achieve the standard of ISO 9001 Certification. JCI Malaysia will implement the system of KRA “Key Result Area” and KPI “Key Performance Index” to our National Organization. All chap-ters and members are clear and be part of our process to success.

Our National Organization is growing rapidly, in order to sustain our growth; JCI Malaysia will operate under a fully effective operated secretariat as well as adopting an e-administration.

For Elementary, JCI Malaysia will enhance our elementary programs. The Organization will organize a series of environmental projects with an effort to increase the awareness of climate change issues in Malaysia and the World. JCI Malaysia will also implement and promote JCI Signatures courses widely.

For Networking, JCI Malaysia will strengthen our local and global networking. JCI Malaysia will work closely and establish partnership with other NGOs, Ministries and government agencies.

JCI Malaysia is celebrating 35th anniversary during coming Annual National Convention at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. On behalf of the Organization, I would like to extend my warmest invitation to all JCI members, JCI Senators, JCI Alumni members and Past National Officers to celebrate this memorable moment during Annual National Convention.

I wish to call upon all members towards the aspiration of our World President Kentaro Harada and the JCI Malaysia’s Presidential Theme to Impact the World by Going Green.

Let’s Go Green!

Message from the World President 201106

Interview with JCI World President,

1) What is your first impression of JCI Malaysia? JCI Malaysia is a very energetic group of young JCI members and I am very privileged to have had the experience to visit there during my year as JCI President. I want to encourage members from JCI Malaysia to continue to be involved internationally to know what is achievable at this high level. I believe the members of JCI Malaysia are headed in the right direction, and with the right ingredients, will continue to solve community problems and empower young people to create positive change.

2) Please share with us your most memorable experience in JCI. My most memorable experience is the JCI Academy. It is difficult to explain in words. Every delegate who attends a JCI Academy says it is a life-changing experience. If you have the opportunity to attend, it will positively change your life forever.

3) What is the biggest challenge as JCI President? One of the biggest challenges as JCI President is to communicate with our members at the local level the key messages for the year. I am very happy to have the opportunity to travel the world and share with members and nonmembers our objectives. I do not travel the world to visit monuments and spend my time at beautiful beaches, but my goal is to motivate and inspire members with the 2011 JCI Plan of Action and how it is relevant to everyone.

4) Can you share with us your focus as the 2011 JCI President? My sole focus as 2011 JCI President is to advance the 2011 JCI Plan of Action. The 3 main goals are very important for this year and beyond, and as JCI members work together to achieve these goals, we will continue to be relevant to the citizens of the world. Not only will we effectively be achieve goals at the global level, but we will be able to influence and create positive change with govern-ments, businesses and the civil society.

5) What will you say to a young person who is indecisive about joining JCI?JCI is an organization made of people somewhat similar to concept of a gym membership. We have to exercise ourselves to expand our ability and capability. After a great amount of effort though challenges, we become great leaders of positive change. It is not an easy path for the young people who make the choice to become a young active citizens, but the rewards out-weigh the challenges.

6) What would be the challenges for JCI in future? The challenge for JCI is the recognition from the general public as the number one international organization for young people. This is our vision. We have to do more to highlight our impact as a leading global network with the impact to create positive change around the world. 7) What is the best way we can create even greater impact? The best way we can create the best impact is to work together as one global team. By raising awareness of the UN Millennium Devel-opment Goals among citizens around the world and by committing companies to join the UN Global Compact, we can create positive change around the world. Every international institution will then recognize JCI as the leading global network of young active citizens

GreenPath for BusinessIn the corporate world, if you start talking about going green, you’ll often hear messages like this:“Yes, we’re going green, despite the expense. It’s the right thing to do.”

Southwest Airlines expanded its on-plane and in-terminal recycling program from just aluminum cans to a much wider assortment of recycled materials. Working with a vendor who is able to handle co-mingled recyclables—which means no extra burden on flight attendants who would find it difficult to collect paper, plastic, and aluminum separately—the company is slash-ing a big chunk out of its multimillion dollar annual waste disposal budget.

And, as Southwest spokesperson Laurel Moffat notes, “To date, we have saved more than 37,000 trees, more than one million gallons of oil, and more than 15 million gallons of water.”

For in-terminal recycling, the two airports piloting the program are diverting 12 to 19 container loads out of the waste stream every month.

Google, whose big, powerful servers not only hold and instantly organize much of the world’s knowledge, but consume enormous quantities of electricity, has invested in a massive project to develop a 350-mile-long 6,000-megawatt wind-powered electrical backbone off the North Atlantic Coast of the United States—that’s enough to power 1.9 million households. Stretching from Virginia to New Jersey, these connected turbines are well-located to ease power burdens on New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, and Wash-ington.

Using the backbone model will eliminate the need to build individual transmission lines from each offshore wind project, and thus reduce the number of permits and environmental impact studies—and bring the wind plants on line much sooner.

According to Rick Needham, Google’s Green Business Operations Director, the company is providing 37.5 percent of the initial-stage equity. And profit is most definitely one of Google’s motives: “We believe in invest-ing in projects that make good business sense and further the development of renewable energy. We’re willing to take calculated risks on early stage ideas and projects that can have dramatic impacts while offering attractive returns,” Needham says.

Yes, it is the right thing to do. And yes, very small companies are often nimble enough to seize the combined economic and environmental advantages.

But smart companies of any size can go green in ways that are highly profitable. Even large, slow-moving companies can save enormously.

Want some examples?

Cover Story18

Page 21: JCI Pemimpin

The Empire State Building will shave $4.4 million a year in energy costs—40 percent of its former $11 million annual energy bills—in a major “deep energy retrofit” that involves replacing every single one of its 6,514 windows. For roughly $700 per window—versus $2500 each to completely replace them—each window is cleaned, coated with a thin UV-resistant film, and insulated with pressurized argon and krypton gasses. Other parts of the renovation include insulating the radia-tors, using both natural and artificial lighting more efficiently, wireless and portable thermostat sensors, and occupancy sensors that prevent heating or cooling of unused space. The building is also switching to individual tenant-by-tenant metering, meaning those who leave appliances and lights on when no one is using them will pay the cost of the wasted electricity.

Building manager and co-owner Anthony Malkin points out that buildings account for 80 percent of the city’s energy use, and not in equal numbers. “Even more inter-estingly, 20 percent of the buildings consume 80 percent of that energy. So 64 percent of all energy consumed in New York City is consumed by 20 percent of the build-ings. That really took me by surprise.”

This project could easily be replicated elsewhere, because the impact on profitability is huge. Look at the numbers: The project cost is $13.2 million, and the annual return (savings) is $4.4 million. That means the first 3 years pay for the project (that’s an ROI of 33% a year). And the second three years put an extra $13.2 million into profit! With banks paying a measly 1.07 percent on a one-year and 2.3 percent return even on a 5-year CD right now, a 33 percent return is mighty attrac-tive.

How much oil and coal could we eliminate, and how much capital would be freed up for job creation, if every company took just one of its buildings through a deep-energy retrofit process?

As consumers, we can seek these types of businesses out and choose to spend our money with them. Then we, using our power of the purse, become part of the solution: we reward the forward-thinking companies that have taken steps to be sustainable, while withdrawing our spending from those who are still stuck in the old, planet-harming ways.

And by profiling those businesses here, I can not only show you what is possible and practical, but perhaps influence your purchasing habits and the steps you might take in your own life to be more green.

“ Shel Horowitz, writes the Green And Profitable/Green and Practical columns and is the primary author of Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green ” (John Wiley & Sons, 2010).

JCI BREAKS WORLD RECORDWITH LONGEST GRAFFITI SCROLL

SIBU: About 500 youths painted a 1.6km-long graffiti to place Sibu in the Guinness Book of World Records — the first ever for the district.

Lanang MP and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King described the momentous event as history in-the-making for the local populace. Guinness World Records adjudicator Seyda Subasi-Gemici from Turkey was present to ensure everything went smoothly and the rules for the attempt were followed.

“My job is to record the attempt, and verify that the whole attempt took place according to the guidelines of Guinness World Records,” Seyda said.

The guidelines among others specified that the height of the canvas needed to be at least 1.5 metres.

“And there should be no gaps in the canvas. My final duty is to measure the canvas to confirm it is longer than the one in Brazil. If it exceeds the past record’s length, there will be a new record holder and the information is entered into the Guinness World Records database. A certificate will also be issued,” she added.

The event was held in conjunction with the Millennium Development Goals Awareness Campaign, co-hosted by JCI Malaysia and JCI Mandarin Sibu, and sponsored by Kolej Laila Taib (KLT) and saw hundreds of young people from schools, NGOs, and others painting their way into the Guinness World Records – Longest Graffiti Scroll – as early as 7am yesterday.

“This marks a new era for Sibu as 500 youths create history, coming up with a 1.6km long graffiti to achieve a new World Guinness Record for the longest graffiti scroll.

“This is indeed a significant occasion for the people of Sibu as we show the world that Sibu ‘boleh’ and our young people ‘boleh’.

“With this achievement the world will come to know about Sibu and how dynamic its young people are,” Tiong said at the opening ceremony held at an open space next to KLT.

“Let this be the start of more good things to come and we hope others will follow suit to break more records to make Sibu better known to the world community.”

He praised the youths for their courage in taking up such challenge and elevating the town image. The current record was set in Mar 7 this year in Brazil where 246 people painted a 1.4km-long graffiti, breaking an earlier record set in Mexico.

The usually quiet open space near KLT was turned into a hive of human activities, filled with laughter as people from all walks of life sprayed their dreams on to the 1.6km-long canvas that snaked around the grounds.

It was a sight indeed to see design and creativity begin to manifests itself on the canvas, measur-ing 1.5 meter in height.

SIBU: A new Guinness World Record has been made, thanks to the 600 local students for having created the world’s longest graffiti scroll measur-ing 1,676.39m.

The old record, at 1,463.85m, was set by Danone employees in Brazil last March 3.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Syeda Subasi-Gemici, who flew in from Turkey to witness the historic event, made the announce-ment at 2.30pm yesterday.

Hard at work: A section of the participants rushing to complete the scroll.

Among those present was Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

Subasi-Gemici’s announcement was received by loud applause from a huge crowd, made up of mostly students and members of Junior Chamber International Malaysia, who is the organizer for the event.

They also jumped for joy, clearly elated that they had made the town and country proud.Earlier, the participants gathered at the venue, which was the old airport runway, as early as 7am. After a briefing session, they began their work on the scroll at 7.30am until 1.30pm, using aerosol sprays of different colors to create many lively images upon which were emblazoned words and phrases.

The participants were students from the town’s secondary schools and private colleges.

Catherine Matan, one of the participants, said she was happy to be involved in the historic project.

“I am tired after a whole morning of spray-painting. But, I must say I am the happiest person because I have helped to create a new record. I hope with this feat we can create more records in future.”

Catherine, a physiotherapy student from Kolej Institut Tinggi Abadi, said her team of 40 students created two topics, the first on gender equality and the second, on maternal help.

Speaking to reporters later, Wong said the achievement was a great effort by JCI Malaysia under its Sibu-born national president Joseph Chieng.

“To me it is a team effort that makes the record possible,” he said, as he praised the 600 participants who had aptly called themselves Teams, for “Together Everyone Achieves More Success”.

Wong said their success had put Sibu on the world map.

“I feel very proud of them. If we stay united and do things together everything is possible. This is an example of that.

“This is a Guinness world record and it happens perhaps only once in a blue moon. And JCI Malaysia has made it happen,” he added.

The project was sponsored by Kolej Laila Taib.

Meanwhile, Lin Mui Kiang, who is the coordinator specialist of United Nations Unit in Malaysia, said the making of the graffiti scroll was in line with Malaysia’s aim of achieving its eight Millennium Development Goals of 2010.

The eight goals included reducing poverty 50%, increasing school attendance in primary education especially among the rural populace, reduction of infant mortality rate and maternal mortality.

According to Lin, at present, the maternal mortality in the country is at five deaths for every 1,000 pregnant mothers。
