As the French sociologist Michel Wieviorka has observed, “at times the encounter between different cultures triggers processes of mutual influence and changes that create original cultural forms. This métissage, this cultural exchange, authorizes the production of difference in the outlook of encounter and relations between single individuals, who live in the ambivalence of belonging to multiple identities”. So métissage, shifted into the field of architecture and design, appears to be a credible alternative to the concept of the Melting Pot (the acritical aggregation of cultures and traditions) and to the linguistic and cultural uniformity produced by globalization. During the FuoriSalone 2013, INTERNI has organized, for Milan Design Week (8-14 April 2013), a major exhibition-event, entitled HYBRID ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN.

The exhibition is on the theme of métissage in architecture and design: the concept of the hybrid is interpreted here as an encounter of cultures and technologies capable of generating solutions for the unknowns and problems of the contemporary world. With the event Hybrid Architecture & Design, Interni activates a stimulating dialogue between designers and companies, taking the form of site-specific works seen as new forms of intercultural communication, in a perspective that goes beyond ethnocentrism, while bringing out the contributions and expressions that arrive from the cultures of different countries.Internationally acclaimed architects and designers whose work stands out for research and innovation express their visions in an evocative, spectacular way, through experimental microarchitectural pavilions or macro-objects, with the support of leading companies in the field of materials, technology and environmental sustainability.

Milan and the FuoriSaloneDesign=Milano is the equation to refer to, in order to understand the Milanese FuoriSalone, an event organized for the first time in 1990 by Interni , when Salone del Mobile, usually held in Setember, was held instead in April, and that has now crossed the boundaries of a conventional market-show, from the point of view of cultural interest and experimentation, to become a festive event, the design project, invading the whole city.In Italy, when you speak of design you inevitably end by speaking of Milan. That explains why FuoriSalone came into being right in Milan, on home ground, and the development of which seems to be almost unrelenting, as for a week it takes up large areas of the city, that change into showcase “districts” luring the so-called “design community”, invading and conquering the city. Furthermore, as years go by FuoriSalone has influenced the city morphology, re-inventing and upgrading some of its districts permanently. The April Design Week is by now a unique rendezvous on an international plane, felt by everybody as a transversal, spectacular and unmissable happening, apart from any specific interest in design.Within this project covering the whole city, FuoriSalone takes up every space available, from the usual locations to traditional places such as museums and art galleries, on this occasion cleared of their collections to accommodate experimental furniture and objects; from “found out” places (workshops, warehouses, disused factories) to monumental places well-known to tourists yet “squatted” by temporary installations, thus “atypical”, The most important component of ‘FuoriSalone’, apart from the content of the many proposals, is the cultural-spectacular as well as market consumption – rendered in performances, installations, shows and experimental events – for everybody, spontaneously, in city spots transformed in “atypical” and attractive places, stages for a collective and many-sided pièce, that are also a direct “training” process on a planning-educational plane. A balance of the last few FuoriSalone allows to set a team effort historically, with Interni as one of the players, the result of concepts backed by a multilinear production, entrepreneural and creative context, that wants to be complementary and not opposed to the renowned Salone del mobile di Milano and that takes the city as ideal place for the interaction of a widespread culture to make design a factor of meditation, development and encounter.

The “Università degli Studi” of Milan Founded in 1924, the Università degli Studi of Milan is one of the youngest of the major Italian universities, though at its birth it merged institutions with over two centuries of history. One of the leading Italian universities in terms of scientific productivity, it is the only one in Italy to be part of LERU, the League of European Research Universities. It offers 136 programs of study, on the first and second levels, 21 doctoral schools and 71 schools of specialization. The research work is done by 31 departments, 30 inter-departmental research centers, 34 subsidized research centers and 49 inter-university centers.

L’Ospedale Maggiore, now the State University of MilanThis monumental hospital building, popularly called Ca’ Granda (great house) by the inhabitants of Milan, was established in 1456 by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, and his wife Bianca Maria to gather in one large building the many small hospitals that had been built in various parts of the city. The project was assigned to Tuscany born Antonio Averlino, called Filarete (1400-1469), who described it in detail in his famous “Treaty of Architecture”, and envisaged the construction of two large four-sided buildings separated by a large main courtyard, surrounded by a four-sided portico on two floors. Two-floor porticoes also surrounded the four minor courtyards in which each four-sided building was divided, like a cross. The project of the building (surface area of 43,000 square metres) was carried out in various stages, following bequests and donations, but especially the popular contribution of a special jubilee called the Day of Pardon and celebrated on the 25 March of each odd year with a generous distribution of indulgences. The first stage of the works, followed by Filarete (ground floor) until his death in 1469, continued with Milan born Guiniforte Solari (second floor) and then with Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. The second stage of the works began in 1624 (17th century). The main courtyard, inherited by Filarete, was finished based on the designs of Giovanni Battista Pessina, soon supported by Francesco Maria Richini, Fabio Mangone and Giovanni Battista Crespi. The baroque front and the church of SS. Annunziata were built. On the front along Via Festa del Perdono Richini re-utilized the windows with two lancets and on the inside presented again the stone decorations made by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo which had belonged to the portico wing that had been demolished to build the new large courtyard. The third stage included the years from 1797 to 1804, during which the three internal courtyards of the second quadrilateral were built and the left part of the wide façade was completed. The hospital functions were then passed onto the halls of nearby Policlinico and, in 1939, to the Niguarda Hospital; so that the Ca’ Granda was adapted to become the headquarters of the Dean’s office of the State University. The left wing (late 1700s) features a sober Neoclassical design. The front (283 metres long) is marked by three volumes that precede the two side quadrilaterals and the main courtyard in between. The right wing (15th century) is fully covered by red brick and consists of the portico built by Filarete which stands on a tall base, and of the upper floor built by Solari, pierced by elegant windows with two lancets, underlined by a continuous fascia with rich earthenware decorations. The main body (17th century), follows on the design of the 15th-century building and features the grand Baroque gate by Richini, flanked by niches with the statues of Saint Charles and Saint Ambrose. The grand main courtyard is surrounded by a four-sided portico, on top of which stands the ethereal open gallery. In the side of the courtyard opposite the entrance there is the small church of SS. Annunziata, built in the 17th century by architects Richini, Pessina and Mangone. The four small courtyards of the Filarete building in the right wing were long ago restored. The first, built by Solari in 1467 and called in the past “the grocery”, is a four-sided portico with an open gallery on top standing on elegant marble columns. It is followed by a second courtyard called “the women’s Baths” (1473), and by a third courtyard, called “the Giazzeria” (Ice-House) (1468). The last of the four small courtyards is called “the Woodshed”. The current situation is the result of the significant restoration started in 1953 on the project of architects Piero Portaluppi and Liliana Grassi.

BE OPEN FOUNDATION

BE OPEN is a global think tank to foster creativity and innovation, a cultural and social initiative that promotes people and ideas proposing solutions for the future. BE OPEN is the result of an initiative of Russian philanthropist, businesswoman and entrepreneur Elena Baturina, who works with an international team. As the Founder of the organization, she has always been committed to excellence in architecture and design. Her career in real estate involved collaborations with leading architects such as Ricardo Bofill, Norman Foster and Hadi Teherani, which sparked her interest in the creative process of architecture and design, and the desire to support young creative talents whose visionary ideas will shape tomorrow’s world. BE OPEN functions as a bridge between the talents of our time – designers, architects, artists, thinkers, publishers, writers, businessmen and opinion leaders – and the most promising minds of the next generation. The Foundation operates as a hub for the promotion of innovative thinking: ingenious projects are discovered through competitions and platformed through exhibitions, before being put forward for economic development. BE OPEN to the Future was the first project the foundation launched in Milan with the magazine INTERNI during the FuoriSalone 2012 at the Università degli Studi. In a series of debates and conferences, a group of international personalities of design and the creative professions gathered to discuss a wide range of themes, in relation to the evolutions of the near future. Alongside the talks, the BE OPEN installation “Verge” showcased the works of seven leading contemporary Russian artists and the winners were announced for the first edition of the BE OPEN Awards, supporting emerging creative talent. The Foundation then moved on to Design Miami/ Basel, to launch the initiative BE OPEN Inside the Academy, a platform to showcase and honor recent achievements in educational approaches that promote real-world problem solving through innovative thinking. A discussion amongst educators explored ways in which budding designers can be nurtured to address the needs of tomorrow’s world. For 2013, BE OPEN is focusing on design through the five senses, to discover how to trigger the sixth sense, or intuition, with projects that produce a synthesis of sensory experience and technology. The research began with sound in September 2012, during the London Design Festival, with the BE OPEN Sound Portal, a site-specific installation co-produced with the London Design Festival for Trafalgar Square. A program of talks and events was also held in collaboration with WIRED magazine and the V&A; a Young Designers Fair BE OPEN Space was staged at The Dock with Tom Dixon, and the BE OPEN Awards and exhibition were held at 100% Design. The next stop in the BE OPEN itinerary was Design Miami 2012, where designers whose work addresses stimulation of the senses spoke at the BE OPEN Forum. For Design Week in Milan in 2013, BE OPEN will once again co-produce the exhibition-event of INTERNI at the State University. Responding to Interni’s theme of Hybrid Architecture&Design, in the Cortile della Farmacia BE OPEN presents an installation by the designer Christophe Pillet that investigates multi-sensory space with videos by Studio Azzurro. In the porticos of the same zone, the Sfelab collective will install an interactive project on the concept of designing for the sixth sense through technology. Critic Philippe Daverio will introduce and moderate an illustrious panel discussion on concepts relating to sensory experience in the future. Finally, the sense of taste will be explored at the Moroso showroom, where an installation by Patricia Urquiola with kvadrat will offer an exclusive setting for a dining experience that launches a focus on food and taste throughout 2013.

Architectural lighting, applied in museums, retail facilities, offices and urban areas. The company has selected a series of guiding values, pursued and updated over time in a constant way, with great determination: innovation and research, human resources and training, design and culture, architecture and territory, internationalism and communication. iGuzzini, in fact, is the promoter and pioneer of a true culture of light, always open to the progress offered by technological innovation, transferred into every single project. iGuzzini spreads its knowledge through activities of multi-channel communication and activities of training, and collaboration with great architects, designers and lighting designers on the international scene. The goals of the company, already back in the early 1980s, are energy savings, respect for the Earth and all its resources, thanks to efficient lighting solutions to reduce consumption, offering high performance, and using light sources that combine LEDs with traditional sources from the latest generation. The culture of light and design that is so deeply rooted in the genetic makeup of iGuzzini cannot help but find expression in concrete works, transferring into constructed architecture and temporary installations that complex of knowledge that is the company’s most authentic asset. Years of experience with light, in pursuit of the improvement whereby lighting design can have a positive influence on the quality of life, working towards the concept “Better Light for a Better Life” that has been a part of the iGuzzini identity for some time. This is the spirit that motivates iGuzzini, also in the contributions made in the context of Interni Hybrid Architecture & Design, alongside some of the most prestigious architects on the scene today. Once again, in this partnership with Interni, quality and excellence are the company’s true leitmotivs. For Hybrid Architecture & Design iGuzzini is the sponsor of the installation Hooked Up, created by the lighting designer Dean Skira and positioned in the Hall of the Auditorium of the State University.

STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS is a 40-person innovative architecture and urban design office working globally as one office from New York City and Beijing. Steven Holl, born in 1947 in Bremerton, Washington, leads the office with senior partner Chris McVoy and junior partner Noah Yaffe. Holl graduated from the University of Washington and pursued architecture studies in Rome in 1970; in 1976 he attended the Architectural Association in London and established Steven Holl Architects in New York City. Considered one of America’s most important architects, Steven Holl is recognized for his ability to blend space and light with great contextual sensitivity and to utilize the unique qualities of each project to create a concept-driven design. Steven Holl is a tenured faculty member at Columbia University where he has taught since 1981. In 2001 Time Magazine named Steven Holl as America’s Best Architect; he was awarded the 2012 AIA Gold Medal, and the 2010 Jencks Award of the RIBA.Steven Holl Architects, internationally-honored with architecture’s most prestigious awards, has realized architectural works with extensive experience in campus and educational facilities, the arts (including museum, gallery, and exhibition design), and residential work. With each project Steven Holl Architects explores new ways to integrate an organizing idea with the programmatic and functional essence of a building. Rather than imposing a style upon different sites and climates, the unique character of a program and a site becomes the starting point for an architectural idea. Steven Holl Architects specializes in seamlessly integrating new projects into contexts with particular cultural and historic importance. Several of the projects involve renovation and expansion of historically important structures: in 2007 the much celebrated addition to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in kansas City, Missouri, opened to the public; recently completed are the Sliced Porosity Block (Chengdu, China), the Daeyang Gallery and House (Seoul, korea), the Cité de l’Ocean et du Surf (Biarritz, France) and the Horizontal Skyscraper (Shenzhen, China). The Campbell Sports Center at Columbia University will open within the spring 2013, and the Glasgow School of Art will open in September 2013.Steven Holl Architects’ Daeyang Gallery and House received a 2012 Annual Design Review Award, and a 2012 Emirates Glass LEAF Award. The Cité de l’Ocean et du Surf received a 2012 American Architecture Award, a 2011 Emirates Glass LEAF Award and an Annual Design Review Award, and the Horizontal Skyscraper won a 2011 AIA National Honor Award.

ConceptThe materials of installation are cut from 21 million year old Lecce limestone from a quarry in Lecce, Italy, which has been open since Roman times. The creative process - beginning with a 18x12,50 cm watercolor sketch in New York City, which is transformed into a 3d file, and then sent to a five-axis cutter in Lecce - required no working drawings. Steven Holl Architects’s research on Lecce stone began back in 2010, thanks to the exhibition ‘Su Pietra’ held at the Castle of Acaya (Vernole, Lecce) and organized by the Institute of Mediterranean Cultures of the Province of Lecce. Beginning in Lecce and trucked to Milan, the heavy stones of Inversion will be flown air freight to Princeton, New Jersey (USA), in the permanent configuration of the new Performing Arts Center.

ProjectMeasuring 1,2 m tall and weighting 2.500 lbs (1,15 tons), the six Lecce limestone blocks are digitally cut with a five axis CNC milling machine by the Lecce stone fabricator Pimar. The forms are carved out rectangular stone blocks, and their direct reversal as solid.Reflected in a sheet of water, these forms are again reversed. The sheet of water created by Teuco Guzzini is equipped with a misting system. In the evening they glow like stone lanterns powered with flexible high-powered Led strip tubes provide by iGuzzini. To complete the project, the new mens fragrance by Salvatore Ferragamo: Acqua Essenziale. A combination of essence, the highest form of authenticity, and water, the most essential of the natural elements.

PimarWith over 150 years of experience in the quarrying and working of Lecce stone, Pimar is a reference point on national and international markets, involved in prestigious architectural projects designed by talents like Renzo Piano, Steven Holl, Alvaro Siza and Philippe Starck. CHRISTOPHE PILLET is a french designer who has won international acclaim for the spectrum and quality of his creations. Architecture, objects, furniture, art direction: his signature is invariably associated with the finest brands and projects of ever-increasing weight and prestige, from transforming the Lancel boutiques across France and the rest of the world, designing the new Hotel Sezz in St Tropez, and the restaurant Maison-Blanche in Casablanca, to creating stands for Renault at international automobile shows. Whether it be as design director for Lacoste, or in long-term collaborations with Driade, Cappellini and Emu, his considered interpretations are a testament to high-voltage chic, distinguished both by its precision and rigor. If a Pillet style exists, it is that of efficiency, service and humanity: the ability to crystallize, in the project, the excitement of the proposition. Collaborations over time, such as those with Catherine Malandrino and John Richmond, signify his interaction with the world of fashion, a domain which is particularly dependent on the art of seduction. Pillet’s works also indicate a capability, to achieve recognition on a global scale (in Japan, the US, Great Britain), the sensitive, material translation of a happy relationship with the world – which, logically, is oblivious to borders. Pillet’s ranges were originally italian. There were certainly few places as magical as Milan for designers in the 1980s. Business in Italy has never ceased to be a family affair, where major companies remain loyal and the idea of the meeting is still privileged. Having been awarded his diploma from the Domus Academy (master class), he became part of the Memphis Group (as an assistant to Martine Bedin and Michele De Lucchi), when they led the vanguard of a new approach to design. Upon his return to Paris, Pillet was involved in the development of the Starck agency, during the period when American hotel interiors and the toothbrush were subject to a major reinvention. Having graduated from extra to actor, Pillet would take on the role of director in 1993 with the creation of his own agency. In the same year he was nominated Designer of the Year at the Salon du Meuble de Paris, and his independent career was launched. His personality and his career offer distinctive characteristics. Whilst having an art school background (he studied in Nice), he initially launched a music career: he has retained a taste for certain rhythms and time signatures, as well as a search for harmony. Displacement, travel, transit - an interest in movement has never ceased to be present. Pillet is not a native of the southeastern France but spent his adolescence in Nice; in the 80s, he was a young designer in Italy. Today he is a designer developing international projects in France. Design welcomes this desire for ubiquity, that of gaining intimacy with a problematic as well as the maximum distance possible, creating the conditions for innovation. This is attested to by the attention that is now devoted to architecture in the agency’s projects, or the emphasis on ‘modest’ projects, in which practical character and economy are privileged exclusively over any other criteria.

ConceptAn installation for meditation, an evocative construction that combines natural elements, technological devices and artistic videos in a creative mixture to reawaken the senses. The external structure is in black wood, covered and crossed by vegetation: large LED screens on the wall constantly broadcast video images, a gathering of experiences through the five senses produced by the award-winning Studio Azzurro, a group of new media artists. Interactive installations by the studio Sfelab in the cloisters engage visitors in an intense sensory and emotional experience.

ProjectHouse of Senses is an installation located at the center of the Cortile della Farmacia and integrated with the existing geometry of the garden. Built entirely in wood with anthracite black stain, with a brushed finish, the installation rests on a platform. Vegetation covers the rectangular flat roof. The three walls are screens showing synchronized videos that explore the universe of the senses, created by the artists of Studio Azzurro. The floor and ceiling are made with a special reflecting material that increases the impressionistic effect of the space, reflecting the images shown on the walls. Tall slender trees cross the roof and become the heart of the installation, putting nature into contact with the technology of the screens. Visitors are attracted by the lively video images projected throughout the pavilion and by the interactive installations of Sfelab, positioned in the spaces of the portico and created to investigate the world of the senses.

BE OPENBE OPEN is a global initiative to foster creativity and innovation, a think tank whose mission is to promote people and ideas today to build solutions for tomorrow. It is a cultural and social initiative founded by the Russian philanthropist, businesswoman and entrepreneur Elena Baturina behind whom stands an international team.Elena Baturina’s commitment to excellence has been inspired by working with leading architects such as Ricardo Bofill, Norman Foster and Hadi Teherani during her international construction career. She became interested in the creative process of architecture and design, which led to the conception of the BE OPEN Foundation – to support talent and visionary ideas that will shape tomorrow’s world, through a system of conferences, awards, exhibitions and cultural events. For 2013 BE OPEN is focusing on design for the five senses, with the aim of discovering how to trigger the sixth sense, or intuition, through innovative projects that create the ultimate synthesis of the sensory and technology. The Foundation is proud to be working with world-renowned designer Christophe Pillet and to present his response to the sensory journey.

STUDIO AzzURRO is an artistic studio that focuses its research on the expressive potential of new Information Technologies. In 1982 Fabio Cirifino (photography), Paolo Rosa (visual arts and film) and Leonardo Sangiorgi (graphics and animation) began an experience which, over the years, has explored the poetic and expressive possibilities of new technological cultures; in 1995 they were joined by Stefano Roveda. Through the creation of video environments, sensitive and interactive environments, museum exhibitions, theatre performances and films, they have developed a broad artistic experience which cuts across traditional disciplines, forming a team which is open to various contributions and other significant collaborations. In addition to experimental work, the activity of the group is linked to experiences in the social sciences and humanities to promote, through the use of multimedia and new technologies, teaching and training through workshops, seminars, courses and meetings. Its artistic research was, at first, directed toward the creation of video environments, in which the electronic image became a part of the physical environment in order to give central importance to the spectator and the surrounding context. Video environments are narrative devices based upon a highly evocative scenario, upon recorded video sequences of short repeated events and upon an arrangement of monitors which makes it possible to avoid the limitations of the screen.Works such as Il Nuotatore (va troppo spesso ad Heidelberg, 1984) and Vedute (quel tale non sta mai fermo, 1985), involving the human figure and nature as their elements, are projected according to the spatial and social context in which they are to be viewed. Various works during this period, such as Camera astratta (1987) – commissioned by Documenta 8 in Kassel and winner of the Ubu Prize – took their research into the area of theatre and performance, finding an original way of bringing together theatre action and video image with the invention of the double scene, based on the live interaction between the body of the actor and the virtual space of the video.Experimentation continued over the following years through theatre dance and musical, in which The Cenci (1997), presented at the Almeida Theatre, London, represented an important moment. During the same period, Studio Azzurro’s cinema activity was further developed with L’osservatorio nucleare del sig. Nanof (1985), culminating in the release of the feature film Il Mnemonista (2000), a voyage into the labyrinths of memory, freely adapted from a clinical case described by Alexander Luria. In 1995 they developed an important new interest in questions of interactivity and multimedia, with the creation of a series of works described as sensitive environments, including Tavoli (Perché queste mani mi toccano?, 1995) and Coro (1995).

These are environments which are capable of responding to a human action, in which technology is combined with narration and space, where the effects produced derive from choices and from the presence of people and systems, through “natural interfaces”, reacting without the use of technological controls but through ordinary means of communication, such as touch, foot contact or sound. In 2002, after two years of travel and research, an exhibition entitled Meditazioni Mediterraneo was presented at Castel Sant’Elmo, Naples, and at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, consisting of five unstable landscapes, interactive installations on the theme of Mediterranean identity. This work was to mark the beginning of a new investigation into place, with its memory and identity, using the results of earlier experiences in order to design multimedia museum exhibitions, including Il Museo della Resistenza at Sarzana (2000) and the Montagna in Movimento museum (2007) in the Fortress at Vinadio. The strong narrative and immersive content, the relational and interactive approach, make these museums into ecosystems of learning, narrative habitats which form a dialogue with visitors and with virtual communities. This contact with the values of memory, of places and of communities was also to have a notable influence on their artistic experience, with the production of a new cycle of works called Portatori di storie in which a highly participatory form of interactivity was tried out, involving the visitor, in order to explore the local area through the accounts of its inhabitants. The first works in this project, which is still being developed, are being presented in Casablanca, with Sensible Map, at the International Biennial at Santa Fe, with La quarta scala. In 2011, another work of this cycle, Sensitive City, is presented at Shanghai World Expo. In the same year stands out among the many multimedia paths and museums realized, Fare gli italiani, exhibition produced on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.Studio Azzurro has recently completed the realization of the interactive multimedia gallery for MeMus - Museum and Archives of the Teatro di San Carlo and the recent opening of the Gallerie d’Italia’s Intesa San Paolo was accompanied multimedia opera projected on buildings of Piazza Scala Risveglio, allegoria per figure e musica.La Fabbrica del Vapore, the current headquarters of Studio Azzurro, born from the precise need to create, in the city of Milan, a center of cultural production focused on young generation. Studio Azzurro is promoting training activities since ever.

SFELAB - Something For Everyone is a studio located in Cantù (Como) that works on research and communication, with expertise in a range of different disciplines: interaction art, web, photography, video, graphics, illustration. The studio was founded in 2011 by Marco Brienza (computer processing and photography), Giorgio Pagani (computers and sound) and Tommaso Nava (graphics and illustration). In 2012 Pietro Porro (director) joined the group. Sfelab’s works develop by taking knowledge and force from the different forms of expertise of the group: their variety makes it possible to approach multidisciplinary projects, effectively covering both aesthetic and practical aspects. Research in the area of new technologies encounters communication, to generate active user participation.

ConceptThe project is based on synesthesia and re-presents, in a contemporary way, thanks to the use of multimedia technologies, the works on multisensory perception of the Milanese Futurists. The group led by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti tried to visualize sounds (like the “Parole in libertà”); the same pursuit can be found in the works of Wassily kandinsky, who compared the effects of painting to a ‘visual’ music, where the focus of the painter becomes the gesture, the sudden event, the apparition. The American artist Jackson Pollock also accepted the idea of a painting that no longer has ties to figuration, but becomes the trail of an event. The goal of the project is to offer visitors a synesthetic, elementary, playful and immediate experience. Play is a voluntary and intrinsically motivated activity, performed by adults and children, for recreational purposes; it is a fundamental part of human nature and also a part of learning, especially for children.

ProjectThe experience of play is the main focus of the project, for both individuals and groups. The goal is to encourage collaboration among visitors. The installation is built with the forms and colors of the place, mingling with the walls and columns of the portico, revealing its true identity only through sensory stimuli. The machine becomes capable of seeing, hearing, speaking and, above all, interpreting the senses, just like us. A touch-sensitive surface (tactograph) is positioned in the corridor of access to the Farmacia cloister (main passage point). The perception of the functioning of the surface is immediate, because it reacts instantly: touching the projection screen, the machine responds with a sound and a variation of the projected graphic content. In the cloister two sound sensitive positions have been installed, so that the sounds emitted by visitors will be propagated in the form of a sound and light wave, bringing out the architectural forms of the building. The luminous wave continues along the route in the cloister, in a game of lights and mirrors. The system of mirrors is made with a series of small reflecting surfaces suspended under the vaults of the portico.

AkIHISA HIRATA was born in 1971 in Osaka, Japan. After having completed his postgraduate studies in Engineering at the Kyoto University, he worked for eight years in the studio Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects before founding his own studio in 2005. Since his first project – the Masuya agricultural equipment showroom, winner in 2007 of the New Face Award of the Japan Institute of Architects – it was clear that Hirata’s interests were in the area of hybrids. Even as a child, he thought about the differences between nature and manmade edifices; observing uncontaminated nature up close, he had the desire to create spaces in which people would feel immediately at ease. Hirata is convinced that “architecture is in the tangles”, it is a matter of intertwining factors: constructions have to be an integral part of the biosphere, just as living organisms intersect with each other, from micro-proteins to macro-forests. He rejects the modernist schemes of the 20th century that interpret interiors as hermetic spaces separate from the environment. His vision is of humans and things that blend in spaces with organic shapes, based on natural principles and enriching the environment. Like the shape of coral, rising smoke, water that flows down from a crest. Ideas that lead to the creation of projects and furnishings, almost artworks, like the csh chair, presented at the 2008 edition of Frieze Art Fair in London, an organic gathering of expanding folds, a concept reprised later in many other structures formed by continuous surfaces. With the undulated Animated knot shown at the Milan Triennale in 2009, Hirata won the Elle Decor Young Japanese Design Talent Award.Hirata also applies simple geometric forms, explaining that organic is not necessarily a synonym for complex: the Bloomberg Pavilion in 2011, installed in the courtyard of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Tokyo and made with steel sheets of identical size, is striking due to its tree-like structure. In 2012 Hirata won the Elita Design Award for the best FuoriSalone exhibit with the installation Photosynthesis presented for Panasonic in the exhibition INTERNI LEGACY, and also took first place in the architecture competition for post-disaster reconstruction Housing + kindergarten at kamaishi; he also had a solo show “Tangling” at the Architecture Foundation of London. He was one of the winners of the Leone d’Oro at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennial, for the Japanese Pavilion. Active both in Japan and on an international level, he works in many fields, from furnishings to art installations to residential architecture.

Energetic Energiesby AkIHISA HIRATAwith PANASONIC

ConceptEnergetic Energies provides a representation of a new nature-city dynamic. Focusing on the connection to the environment, research and technological development are applied to create a sustainable life system based on the creation, conservation and rational use of renewable energies. This system can be applied not just to homes, offices and shops, but also to entire cities, with the aim of creating a sustainable, intelligent city.Faced with environmental issues or the view of nature and human society as opposites that cannot be reconciled, the installation proposes a different perspective that observes our cities from above, as part of the planet and the universe. With the use of solar panels that cover cities and blend with nature in a seamless way, the project promotes a hybrid vision of common health permeated by vital force.

ProjectPanasonic with Akihisa Hirata aspired to make a model of the future city: in Energetic Energies solar panels are scattered, spreading like plants, on volumes resembling a cluster of buildings that forms a city to create a landscape of hills. Shadows of clouds pass slowly over this hills, as if moving atop natural terrain, thus encouraging city residents to regain their relationship with the forgotten sky. In the near future, numerous solar panels will cover the roofs of buildings, while changing the scenery of daily life. Hirata believes that it can develop both a system of solar-power generation with the panels in a fixed arrangement and other options that take into account various relationships, such as that involving the pattern of foliage. The architect hopes that future city streets, where the use of natural energy is vital, teem with life by becoming enmeshed with their natural environment.

ARCHIzERO was founded in 2006 thanks to the already active collaboration of the friends and architects Paolo Armato, Michele Cazzani and Damiano Deiraghi; the studio is located in the heart of Milan, in a place with an industrial and underground heritage.Archizero acts as a workshop focusing on the themes of contemporary living; design is seen as a transverse constructive dialogue in an ongoing mixture of architecture, graphics and design, a generative interdisciplinary force. The studio has conducted many studies, including the project for an Educational area on the production chain of wood for the Province of Lodi, intertwining architecture, landmarks and bioengineering.Residences, offices, retail outlets, renovations and new buildings are approached in a painstaking manner, starting with study of the context all the way to completion of the finished work. For many years the studio has been the point of reference in Italy for Citibank, involving preliminary and definitive design of managerial offices, and for Value Retail PLC, the well-known multinational in the retail sector, to create offices all over Europe. In 2010 the studio began working with Gruppo Bracco, creating the conference room of the Centro Diagnostico Italiano in Milan. Also in the pharmaceuticals industry, Archizero has designed in Barcelona the managerial offices of the company Leti.Various brands turn to Archizero for coordinated image projects, including Yves Saint Laurent fragrances-L’Homme. The portfolio includes international retail clients like Calvin klein, Pepe Jeans London, JC de Castel Bajac, Elisabeth Hurley, Puig, Bikkembergs; also in the retail sector, the studio has developed a project of covered walkways for AIG/Lincoln in Rome.In the field of restaurants Archizero operates for Dunne&Crescenzi in Dublin, La Piazza in Munich, Cafe quadro in Rome, Ca’puccino in London, while for Benetton they have developed the concept design for refreshment points based on organic products. For Il Caffè della Terra Archizero, in collaboration with Tony Matjias, has created the entire concept design, coordinating the image, from the coffee machine to the creation of the flagship stores in Milano and Vigevano.Since 2011 the studio has collaborated with franchiumbertomarmi, a company for which it creates works of architecture (tower building in Carrara), as well as design: together with the architect Paolo Rivolta, the designer Giuseppe Venuta and the graphic artist and photographer Tony Matjias, Archizero has created urban and park furnishings with hybrid contours, in which the common denominator is the enhancement and use of stone materials.

ConceptThe concepts of the hybrid and métissage are an integral part of the architectural practice of Archizero; they are expressed through a multi-level language that embraces Orient and Occident, intertwining architecture, art and design in pursuit of a balance between what is built and the surrounding landscape. The installation, based on an idea by Michele Cazzani, establishes a relationship of coexistence between lightness and mass: the marble is utilized almost as it is taken from the mountain, in search of SenSai, a Japanese canon of beauty that puts the accent on the intrinsic force of materials and is based on the natural relationship between lines and planes, voids and solids, interiors and exteriors. The goal of the work is to insert human beings in this subtle balance, welcoming them and making their habitat more pleasant.

ProjectThe structure of the pavilion, made with raw iron pipe, supports and guides a wall of lamellar wood that thanks to an acceleration of the lines towards the top becomes a roof. The structure floats over the marble masses of franchiumbertomarmi, forming a powerful work of architecture. The marble objects include a barbecue system, composed of four blocks of black zebrino marble, including the sink block (with Gessi faucet), tables in Bardiglio marble supported by glass (by Vetreria Artigiana), suspended over the floor in planks of heat-treated ash (supplied by Trapa and installed by Super Skin) and a pool created from a single block of Calacatta marble. The aim of the installation is to bring out the force of solid marble: the individual stone pieces, made directly from quarried blocks, have been polished and sculpted by hand and with advanced technologies.

FranchiumbertomarmiA company based in Carrara of international importance in the stone sector, franchiumbertomarmi moves forward with its objectives of excellence, growth and creation of value. A dynamic company, responsive to the needs of its market segment, it offers selected and exclusive materials from its proprietary quarries. The firm combines innovative ideas with a general vision of the world of marble that is full of stimuli and winning intuitions, making it an ideal partner in any type of project. quarrying of materials, workmanship, supply of the types most in demand on the domestic and international market, collaboration on major architectural projects: this is the potential offered today by Gruppo Franchi, together with the guarantee of reliability and expertise the company has gained in over forty years of experience.

ConceptThe wellbeing of man is a concept that should be safeguarded and protected: the quality of the air we breathe is essential for every human being, for wellbeing and health, especially in closed environments. The installation projects the visitor into an atmosphere of wellness connected with air quality, conserving the concept of pure air, as in a preindustrial situation, completely without external contamination. The installation metaphorically reproduces an experimental machine conceived as a uniform geometric solid: a simple cubical volume, hollowed on the inside to dematerialize it, evoking the idea of air as a transparent, imperceptible entity. Inside, a minimal, surreal micro-environment is recreated, an evocative space in which the visitor becomes part of the experiment, to the point of feeling immersed in a mysterious, pure reality, guided by a rhythmical play of sounds and lights.

ProjectThe installation is a monolithic cube covered with SistemN hexagonal black stoneware tiles produced by Marazzi with an advanced manufacturing process with Ecolabel and LEED certification. Visitors enter through an entrance ramp leading to a higher level, a space with neon lights marked by the vaporization of purified air by means of nozzles connected to a mechanical system. Lights, sounds and vaporized air create an atmosphere of wellbeing inside the space, like a great lung; the visitors, breathing the purified air, become an active part of the installation. With the collaboration of: Aermec for the physical plant systems, Barrisol for the internal facing, University of Bologna – Department of Chemistry “G.Ciamician” for scientific consulting, Arianna Ulian for the sound and Mapei for bi-component polyurethane adhesives.

MarazziThe company is a leading international player in the ceramic tiles sector. Experience and innovation capability, creativity and design, tradition and culture, a passion for ceramics and environmental awareness are the fortes of Marazzi ceramics, which have been defining living spaces since 1935, combining aesthetics and top quality materials. With over 5,500 products in porcelain stoneware, crystallized stoneware and single-fired, as well as mosaics available in a range of sizes, colours, thicknesses and surfaces, Marazzi is able to respond promptly to the diverse needs relating to living spaces and contemporary architecture. For decades Marazzi has studied and offered to the market new applications for ceramics, providing architects – through the brand Marazzi Tecnica – with products of great technical quality. Through the Marazzi Engineering Division, the firm also offers solutions for architecture, including ventilated facades and raised floors.

ConceptThe search for the particular nature and strong points of Italian culture in this specific moment is a theme that repeats, finding different solutions every time. In the installation Sguardi Indiscreti the response is sought in the potential of interaction between classicism and technology, which also lies behind the modus operandi of Safilo. Just as the company designs and produces eyewear using the precision of details and the manual skills of its artisans, combined with applied technology, so this installation uses the paradigms of classical architecture, on the outside, aiming curiosity towards the inside for a glimpse of the tools of modernity and their contribution to the activities of human beings. The small wooden house with windows, whose concept is similar to that of a gallery of plaster casts, has plaster bar reliefs on the outside, depicting faces, hands and noses. Each of them wears a pair of glasses, a clearly strident element that brings the mind back to the present. Through the openings, it is possible to glimpse the inside of the structure, with video projections, elements that form a contrast with the classicism of the exterior. The sense of all this is to always observe from two viewpoints, to look at the beauty of humanism without abandoning curiosity regarding evolution, to learn to construct the personality of the things of the world that is reflected in the beauty of the environment and the society.

ProjectThe structure is a small wooden house in natural fir produced in a traditional way, with beams and posts on a platform of the same material. The external bas reliefs in plaster show faces, hands, noses of classical statues, and eyewear (also in plaster) created for the occasion by Gipsoteca Fumagalli e Dossi, which still makes castings using traditional methods. Some of the eyeglasses have holes through which to look inside the house, where a game of mirrors reflects animated images shown on monitors, as in a kaleidoscope. The videos, produced by Safilo with the filmmaker Mario Greco, narrate the world of eyewear and technologies in an ironic, surprising way.

SafiloSafilo, the historic brand of the Group of the same name, has combined expertise, know-how and tradition since 1934 with technological innovation in the creation of eyewear for men, women and children. In the Safilo collections quality, functional efficacy and comfort go hand in hand with continuous aesthetic research to respond to even the most demanding market segments. The brand is part of the Safilo Group, a worldwide reference for high-end eyewear for sun, sight and sports, operating with 30 owned affiliates and through exclusive distributors in the main countries of Europe, America and Asia. The Group produces and markets a wide range of collections, of its own or under license, controlling the entire cycle from design to production, distribution

Beyond the Wallby DANIEL LIBESkIND with COSENTINO GROUP

Concept“Architecture is a language which is able to narrate the story of the human soul” writes Daniel Libeskind, expressing the hybridization at the core of architecture: it is at once a language, an art form, a narrative and a way of thinking about the world. According to Libeskind, architecture must go beyond mere technique and aesthetics to become a source of creativity and knowledge; the expression of a new humanism in which architecture is not merely the assertion of technological advancements or the manifestation of aesthetic trends, but “lives and breathes, characterized by an interior and an exterior, with a body and a soul, like the human being.” This is the underlying concept of Beyond the Wall, a structure developing along a polycentric spiral open to a plurality of directions, just as architecture must interact with a plurality of different ideas, disciplines, desires and ambitions.

ProjectThe installation is based on the infinite possibilities of the spiral, that in Beyond the Wall is a unique structure. It is not a traditional one with a single center and axis, but a contemporary spiral which opens a plurality of directions along many different trajectories; a polycentric spiral, propulsively twisting to a dramatic zenith. The external material of the wall is bacteriostatic quartz surface Silestone® in its new matte finish Suede, whose geometry forms a contemporary fractal pattern related to the Golden Section. The pattern is integral to the wall structure, carrying within itself the structural logic of modulating scale and proportion within an endlessly fascinating surface. A kind of shiver should run up the form - an overlaying of a pattern that would break scale and dissolve the strength of the rising, twisting wall planes. It’s a mathematical mosaic, a mobile net that would run and break without repeating: a wholly modern concept of a tile, a ‘fractile.’ The aim is to find a similarity that never quite repeats, and to do that the surfacing would have to be a-periodic. It fits and locks together in an open-ended logic, as a network develops. The tiling has to be a growth of strange branchings.

Silestone® by CosentinoSilestone® by Cosentino, quartz surface is owned by Cosentino Group, a global company that responsibly develops innovative surfaces with high added value for the architecture and design world. Cosentino Group is a point of reference in the production and distribution of quartz surfaces, introduces a new finish with a matte texture, Silestone® Suede, for Silestone® bacteriostatic quartz surface. Developed by the Cosentino Group R&D department, the textured surface Silestone® Suede offers a unique feel to touch owing to its beauty and elegance, as well as an extraordinary performance with total color consistency and quality. Silestone® quartz surfaces are available also in Polished and Volcano (textured) finishes. Silestone® features the unique Silestone® bacteriostatic property, which guarantees maximum hygiene. Silestone® consists of more than 90% natural quartz and is highly resistant to stains, knocks and scratches, and has a low level of fluid absorption. It comes in over up to 60 colors and several different formats.

The Viewby LUCA SCACCHETTI with WOLF HAUS

ConceptThe border between interior and exterior, between interior design and architecture, has always been non-existent and fragile, made of holes, gaps in solids, glass, windows, doors always ready to open. Thinking about this virtual yet fundamental borderline means considering something hybrid – a separation that is a union, a necessary line, which to make sense must also be negated – and thinking about sight, looking out and looking in. The view understood as what we observe from the outside, in the city and the landscape, but also what we see from the inside, in our homes, looking beyond the walls. Architecture is simply what we see from our windows and, walking in the city, we observe as the containers of our rooms. The concept of the continuous passage between inside and outside through movement, through sight, and its continuous shifting of the vantage point, forms the basis of the project. The technology applied to make the installation and the use of wood, a noble, ancient material at the service of modern and futuristic architecture, symbolize a moment of profound transformation in our way of thinking about design, as the accent continues to shift towards ecosustainability.

ProjectA sort of tunnel, a hollow log (16 m long, from 5 to 8 meters wide, and 5 meters high) widens towards the center of the courtyard, raising by about 1.5 m. Made with prefabricated wooden panels by Wolf Haus with different finishes (wooden slats, stucco, zinc sheet metal by Vmzinc), it is entirely recyclable and responds to some of today’s pressing questions: ecology, lightness, prefabrication, sustainability, energy. Inside, a series of drawings, etchings and anthologies on its genesis are positioned on a wooden wall, while a bench permits observation of the 17th-century architecture outside and, at the same time, an abstract and innovative decoration on the wooden floor by Xilo1934. With the contributions of ibergamaschi (window frames), Il Bostrico (etchings), GP Progroup (wooden boiserie), Exhibo (audio systems).

Wolf Haus A company with over 3000 employees and 30 facilities all over the world, operating in the field of wooden constructions for over 50 years. The corporate philosophy has always focused on innovation and research on new technological systems that reflect the values of sustainable building and social responsibility for the future of the coming generations. Thanks to the business policies applied by Wolf Haus, including important investments in research and development on innovative technologies in the field of certified antiseismic construction and high energy efficiency, today it is a company of reference in Italy in the sector of prefabricated wooden structures: houses, offices, daycare centers, schools, tourism facilities that stand out for their construction technology, environmental sustainability and integrated design that takes architectural versatility into account.

ConceptThe installation is composed of two long undulated parts that flow into each other and, when seen from the central axis of the courtyard, seem to join to form a large arch; actually, the two parts are imperceptibly separated along the borderline between the green surface of the courtyard and the paved zone. The arch is clad in mosaic tile, like a golden river that carries multicolored crystals in its current. The gold represents splendor: it is the expression of natural brightness, radiance, and it has very positive symbolic meanings in all cultures. The gold leaf decoration is a reminder of icons, the iconostasis, Russian orthodox churches. The mosaic is an artistic technique whose very name evokes the concept of “creation of a harmonious whole” through the juxtaposition of individual tiles that compose the whole. Arch-Skin, as the sponsor of the installation, pursues its corporate mission of encouraging exchanges and contacts between the realities of architecture, art and design.

ProjectThe two long undulating elements of Golden River are iron structures, 7 meters each, by 3.5 meters maximum height, designed and dimensioned in keeping with engineering calculations; the structures are subdivided into segments of about 4 m, connected by male-female joints and made to contain an internal lighting system on two lines. The two iron structures are painted and covered in fiberglass composite. The composite covering is designed to be subdivided with overlaid sealing joints that can be removed, allowing access to the blockage dowels and the electrical system. This is the base on which to apply the mosaic surface: mosaic belongs to the historical memory of Ravenna, the place of birth of the mosaic artist Marco Bravura, who has inserted “cotissi” in the decoration, blocks of glass left over in the crucibles of the Venetian glassworks, like precious stones that glow when crossed by light.

Arch-SkinIt is an avant-garde russian enterprise that promotes innovative materials and technologies for the pannelling of architecture and objects on the global market. It works in collaboration with leading architects, artists and designers around the world and is a member of the Eco-construction Council of Russia.Arch-Skin produces ArS material, a large, thin ceramic sheeting, a new generation of multipurpose tiling material, due to its extreme lightness (7 kg per sqm), high aesthetic qualities, large surface area (3 sqm) and slim form (only 3 mm in thickness).ArS can be used in the construction and tiling of exterior and interior spaces, new and existing walls and flooring, partitions and tunnels, and both commercial and private real estate. ArS is ideal for decoration in the bathroom and kitchen or on the surface of cabinets, tables and other household objects. ArS is certified by the European Council on Green Building for special conditions of use, including airports, hospitals and sport facilities.Arch-Skin won the Best Exposition in the Interiors and Exteriors award at the 3rd Moscow Architecture Biennale and at the Arch Moscow 2011, the ECOproduct for production and launch of universal tiling (a new generation of ArS material) at the Green Project 2011, the International Festival of Innovative Technologies in Architecture and Construction in Moscow.

ConceptHybrid is an object resulting from the contact moment between the tangible and intangible: in the context of the exhibition, it is a site specific pavilion, that gently interferes into the renaissance campus. It explores different cultural impacts and links them together in a cohesive way by form and light, combining materials and technology in a solid structure where light is proposed as a contact tissue. Visual integration is achieved through the object that acts as a device and through a geometrical slicing constituted by a series of vertical and horizontal, intensely repetitive cuts. Those meandrick spatial articulation allows daylight to enter the inside of the pavilion, while simultaneously, enabling the Led lighting to emit from the inside-out, creating intangible light columns all through the hosting building.

ProjectThe pavilion, positioned in front of Aula Magna, is a 16 m long object where both 4 x 4 meters entrances permit visitors to enter it comfortably. In the middle, the comfortable zone is gradually transformed into a 2,15 m wide passage which, consequently, is creating a spatial light experience for the viewers who are immersed even more intensely in light. The pavilion propels a sophisticated and precise equilibrium between contrast and brightness, without allowing the light source to dominate with its glare, thus creates an intense feeling of space. Lighting fittings designed by Dean Skira in collaboration with iGuzzini were produced to create a special visual linear effect by using custom made optic lenses and Led sources, allowing the space to become the source of light in a delicate and gentle way.

iGuzziniThe design of the effective use of light has been the salient characteristic for over fifty years of the activity of iGuzzini, the Marches-based manufacturer of indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, now one of the most important firms of its kind on a European level, with sales of 186 million euros, 20 worldwide affiliates and over 1000 employees. Constant pursuit of quality can also be seen in the excellent design of the fixtures produced, created to fit into the widest range of architectural contexts, while creating a luminous orchestration the improves the quality and interpretation of spaces. Architectural lighting, applied in museums, retail facilities, offices and urban areas.Years of experience with light, combined with clear values pursued with dedication – innovation and research, human resources and training, design and culture, architecture and territory, internationalism and communication – translate into a true culture of light, summed up in the slogan “Better Light for a Better Life” that is a part of iGuzzini’s identity. The company’s goals include energy savings and respect for the Earth, thanks to lighting solutions that reduce consumption, offer high performance, and are equipped with the latest generation of light sources for low environmental impact.

AUTOBAN. Seyhan Ozdemir (1975) and Sefer Caglar (1975) established the design studio Autoban in Istanbul (Turkey) in 2003. Seyhan Ozdemir, born in Istanbul, graduated at the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University with a degree in Architecture. Sefer Caglar, born in Nigde (Turkey), graduated at the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University, with a degree in Interior Architecture. After their graduation in 1998, both worked as designers and project managers for various architecture practices, engaged in numerous disciplines. For the last 10 years, they have been working together as partners in Autoban; the studio, based at the beginnig in the neighborough of Galata, develops architectural and interior projects along with product design, that engages issues of creativity and knowledge, realism and imagination, function and culture. Now a team of 35 professional - mostly architects and interior designers - works on both local and international projects in Autoban’s new office in Tunel (always in Istanbul). The base of Autoban’s interior, architectural and product design approach is formed by the fundamental essentials of architecture. This approach concentrates in progressive design resolutions with an experimental standpoint. While developing a wide scope of environments, ranging from small scale to large scale, Autoban offers inspiring experiences where spaces are not made, but designed to be discovered. In 2012 Autoban products were sold across Europe, United States, Asia and Australia, in more than 60 points by De La Espada, a Spain and Portugal based british company who’s in charge of production and sales worldwide. The works of Autoban won several international awards, as the Best Young Designers by Wallpaper* in 2004, the Best Newcomer by Blueprint Magazine in 2005 and many others awards given by different respectable organizations. Most recently (2011) The House Hotel Bosphorus, of which Ozdemir and Caglar designed the interiors, was listed in the 101 Best Hotels in the World by Tatler Travel Guide 2012. Moreover, their Suite Bed was selected as the Best Bed in the Wallpaper* Design Awards 2012 (Domestic Design Category) and Nef 163 Apartments was shortlisted in World Architectural Festival (WAF) 2010.Current projects include private student housings in various parts of Istanbul, a hotel project located in the countryside of Istanbul, high-rise residential building interiors in the business center of Istanbul, a private house in Cunda Island near Ayvalik (Turkey), retail stores in several different cities and various restaurant projects. The latest workof Autoban is the interior design of the Heydar Aliyev Airport in Baku (Azerbaijan), which is a milestone carrying the scale of works to a further level, by means of design and responsability.

ConceptTransition is the encounter, the togetherness and the interaction of two different structures. A new surface is designed as the hybrid of a product belonging to the modern world and a historical door, located in the transitional area leading to the stairway which connects the Ground Floor to the First Floor. As the cosmetic products create a new architectural pattern by coming together within an aesthetical iteration, the surface which arises from this pattern turns into an architectural shell representing the form of the historical door. Transition is designed with an alternative approach to the relationship of two different formations which mutually influence each other and finally create a new perception. This work narrates the transformation of a conventional architectural element into a new experimental one, by combining it with a contemporary element. While the installation allows people to think about notions such as “transition from a point A to a point B” and “threshold in perception”, it symbolizes a new formation, which connects two different components. Visitors can walk through this shell and perceive the design from various perspectives; and they can experience the glamorous surfaces as an aesthetical symbol, which create miscellaneous reflections in different times of the day.

ProjectThe project consists of a tunnel, taking the form of the portal interior. Main constructional elements of the tunnel have been applied with sustainable and flexible materials such as Mdf and Flexwood. The exterior covering of the new surface is Pvc metal plate with 1mm thickness, expressing the idea of reflecting the actual surrounding elements and the movement of people passing through, superposed with the colorful range of Deborah Milano lipstick packagings. The lighting gap behind the new shell and the historical door is a symbol of their togetherness, keeping the emphasize of the existence of two separate structures, differentiating from each other by notions such as time, material, technique and contextual definition.

Deborah MilanoA company that has operated in the field of cosmetics for four generations, with over 100 years of experience and constant effort to achieve a democratic idea of aesthetics. Today the firm is an international corporation, capable of responding to the needs of all women thanks to the variety and versatility of its products and the almost total coverage of all the segments of the cosmetics market: make-up, skincare and healthcare. FEDERICA MARANGONI worked in Venice as an artist and designer in the early 1960s, concentrating on the new plastic materials and neon. Later, she also worked with video and glass. In 1970 she opened, in Venice, the studio Fedra Design, an activity that by cultural and professional accompanies her work as a artist, and develops in an eclectic range of projects from corporate and graphic design to product design, to special projects for environments and installations. Glass as a material has been an important part of her work since the early 1970s, when she began to work in Murano both as a sculptress and a designer. A modular interlocking work of glass blocks, made with the Salviati glassworks, was shown at the Venice Biennial (1971) and again at the Biennial of 1995 at Ca’ Pesaro in the historic exhibition “Percorsi del gusto”. Invited by Giò Ponti in 1971 to Eurodomus in Turin, Federica Marangoni designed a large luminous form composed of tubular parts and joined by a ring for the atrium, a citation of the well-known signals in the lagoon; this work then became a glass lamp, and led to the start of collaboration with well-known companies in the technical lighting sector. Federica Marangoni still continues her relationship with this material, as a designer and sculptress, in Murano and with Italian and foreign companies operating with glass in terms of manual and industrial production. She also uses glass in a conceptual way: its fragility becomes a sign for art. She has worked with Tiffany as a product design consultant for glass, throughout the 1980s, for the old Salviati of Murano and the new Salviati, for Corning Glass NY, Firme di Vetro, Christofle, Bormioli di Fidenza Vetraria, Trend. She has designed large works in industrial glass with S.I.V. and, with Pilkington, a large “Labyrinthine Fountain”, a public work for the city of Seville, a 3 metres Book in curved pane glass for Glas Tec of Düsseldorf, a Glass Wall with vertica layers and breached at the center, entitled No-More; with Troplast AG of Düsseldorf she has created a 14 metres Rainbow in laminated glass in 7 colors, an element which has also become an important presence in many of her works abroad. She has designed restaurants in New York and many booths for the fair Abitare il Tempo of Verona from the 1980s up to the latest edition. In parallel with her work as an artist, leading to shows all over the world, she continues to collaborate with companies in the fields of lighting and glass, creating objects for particular clients like San Pellegrino. She has taught for 15 years at New York University and given many lectures on the theme “Art, Arts&Crafts, Design: confrontation, analysis and interactivity”. In 2012 she participated, with the lecture “Light is always free” in the course on Light Art of Professor Gisella Gellini at the Milan Polytechnic. In April 2012 she was a speaker at the conference on video art of the 1970s in Italy at the Macro in Rome.

With the Patronage of

Through Architectureby FEDERICA MARANGONIwith F.A.R.T.

Concept“To construct with light, which is the central element of life. There would be no life without light, light is form and sign for the eye and the mind”: the value of light lies at the basis of the work Through Architecture, of great conceptual and visual impact. A neon staircase makes a total, ascending cut through the architecture of the portico of the Cortile d’Onore of the State University, an imposing architectural sign. The staircase indicates ascent, connection, arrival, but it is ephemeral, destructured, made of light suspended in continuous movement. It is a metaphorical immaterial presence, like the thought of an architect or a poet, or the hybrid dream of both: a spiritual and conceptual utopia. The work uses the figure of the staircase, a very important sign of architecture, but constructed with other materials; an aerial and ethereal structure that contrasts the architectural solidity and crosses the classical presences of the historic archways of the University. It represents the intersection of the work of an artist, architect or designer, whose disciplines have become hybrids in their practice and expressions.

ProjectThe work is made with Cracked Tube neon©, a tube whose structure has been modified to create a continuous interruption of the neon gas, which divides and produces a visual effect of continuous electrical discharge, like that of a lightning bolt. From the staircase, over 12 m in height, emerges the message Go Up. The Cracked Tube neon© is used for the first time by the artist and designer Federica Marangoni for the work created for the exhibition Hybrid Architecture & Design. The company F.A.R.T. has contributed, providing the transformers for the Cracked Tube neon©.

F.A.R.T.It is an Italian company, world leader manufacturer in neon, cold cathode and lighting market: since 1945 F.A.R.T. Srl develops and manufactures all its products in its own production plant located in Preganziol (Treviso), assuring quality and reliability of its products. During the years it has developed five series of products to cover all the worldwide market request, one of these is specific for artistic and design market: F.A.R.T. Srl strongly believes in the applications of neon and cold cathode for art and for design projects. Many illuminations of important buildings all over the world have been carried out with cold cathode lamps, powered by F.A.R.T. transformers. Moreover, many artworks exposed in the most famous international exhibitions have been illuminated by F.A.R.T. products.

ConceptHybrid design suggests an alternative and often experimental way of mixing materials, form and function to create outstanding new solutions. Hybrid implies innovation and creativity based on rethinking and redesigning existing methodologies. The interior design of the Interni Press Room conveys the hybrid concept by mixing together several materials and manufacturing technologies, using multiple forms of expression. Characteristic of the design are organic shapes and forms, three-dimensionality, illumination that combines classic lighting with contemporary illumination effects, and organic furniture and finishes custom designed by Mac Stopa (reception desk, conference/meeting tables, upholstery, carpet, wall coverings, lighting, shelving). ProjectThe Interni Press Room consists of two areas: the reception with modular front desk and separate conference/meeting area with relaxation corner. The organic shaped front desk and quadrazone modular table system are made from Staron® Solid Surface, a material produced by Samsung Chemical Europe and fabricated by Acrea and Nowy Styl Group. The hybrid table system is based on a tessellating quadrilateral geometry that allows for multiple configurations. In the relaxation corner, classic Fatboy bean bags are upholstered in the Watch Your Step pattern on fabric designed by Mac Stopa that creates the illusion of a surrealistic three-dimensional structure. The pattern also is used on the carpet by Radici and on the wall covering. The Step and Structure chairs by Mac Stopa for Tonon & C. combine elements of classic design with organic shapes and are made from low-density integral polyurethane solid-colored foam material. Hybrid illumination is created by replacing the bulbs in the existing chandeliers with hybrid lamps equipped with spotlights. Catellani & Smith lamps are inserted in the shelving creating beautiful illumination effects of contrasting shades. The Bottoms Up modular shelving composed of overlapping modules is manufactured by Wolbel. Verde Profilo Moss is used to create the Hybrid Architecture & Design logo.
